Our latest interview was in New York City with writer and friend Ellis Avery, who welcomed us into her lovely (and air-conditioned!) apartment and offered us iced lemon water while outside the temperature and humidity climbed into the low 90s. What a treat to see Ellis on her home turf and hear her talk so beautifully and honestly about early influences, the role imagination plays in her work, and what happens when life gets in the way of art. Brava, Ellis, and thanks again for being such an inspiration as a writer and a person! The only writer ever to have received the American Library Association Stonewall Award for Fiction twice, Ellis Avery is the author of two novels and a memoir. Her novels,
THE LAST NUDE (Riverhead 2012) and
THE TEAHOUSE FIRE (Riverhead 2007) have also received Lambda, Ohioana, and Golden Crown awards, and her work has been translated into six languages. She teaches writing at Columbia University and out of her home in the West Village.
