A new term in the podcasting space is circulating, and it is called "windowing"

Windowing, for those who don't know, is a new term where podcasts are pushing their content out to a specific platform and waiting to share it on others.

Now, let's break that down. What I mean by posting their podcasting on one platform first, is like when Gimlet Media puts out its new show called Mogul: The Chris Lighty Story it will be exclusively on Spotify for 8 weeks before you can get it on iTunes, Pocketcasts, Overcast, or anywhere else.

Now, why would someone want to do this? Money.

Because Gimlet and Loud Speakers Network, who partnered with Gimlet to make this show, they are under the Spotify Originals label which means they made a deal to have this show exclusively on Spotify in hopes people interested in the show will sign up for their service and pay them money.

Now windowing is nothing new, in fact it has been around for a long time, if you want to get a specific product but only a certain store carries it, that is windowing. Where the creator of the product and the distributor agree on a sale to have that only in their store.

There's a really great article by Max Willens of Digiday that explains what windowing in in greater detail, the mild success it has had overall, and what it could mean for podcasters in the future.
