The next time you have an event, a near miss, a close call, a good catch,
0:05
I'm not necessarily talking about a full-blown accident, but something happens.
0:09
The next time something happens, ask this question, who in the organization
0:14
was not surprised by that outcome?
0:21
Music.
0:30
Hey, everybody, Todd Conklin, Pre-Accident Investigation Safety Moment.
0:33
It's those special moments that we share with one another, you and me.
0:38
It's our special moment. We're having a special moment, and that's what it is.
0:42
This idea that there are people in the organization that are not surprised by
0:48
failure is a really important teaching tool, but it's not effective for the
0:54
workers because they're not very surprised.
0:58
It's incredibly effective at the leadership level.
1:02
Because one of the things that we can recognize pretty early is when something
1:05
happens, an off-normal outcome transpires in your organization,
1:12
ask who was not surprised that that happened. Now, you've got to build trust.
1:18
So it's pretty important to have psychological safety. People need to be able to tell you the truth.
1:23
But once you sort of establish that ability for them to say,
1:26
yeah, nobody was surprised that that happened.
1:29
We all knew that was coming. It's not a matter of if, it was a matter of when.
1:33
That was on the route all along.
1:35
That'll help you understand that those low-level signals, the weak signals exist in the organization.
1:43
And we have to turn to our workforce and set our sensitivity levels in a different
1:50
place so we can pick up on events as they're happening, not after they have happened.
1:57
Now that's important. But what it means is, is we have to be wise enough as
2:03
leaders to recognize that when that thing took place, there were people who
2:09
knew that was going to happen. And once we identify that, then the next questions make perfect sense.
2:15
What do you look for? What do What'd you sense? What'd you pulse?
2:20
What were you looking at in there to give us that knowledge that this could
2:24
potentially take place? That is an important piece of data. And that's what we want to know.
2:30
That's a pretty important safety moment.
2:34
Learn something new every single day. Have as much fun as you possibly can.
2:38
Be good to each other. Be kind to each other. And for goodness sakes, you guys, be safe.
2:44
