Thank you again for joining me for the mysteries

0:17

of God's Word . We will

0:19

be examining the treaty with Abimalik

0:21

that Abraham made . We'll

0:23

be starting in Genesis 21

0:26

, verse 22 . At

0:28

that time , abimalik and Faiqal

0:31

, the commander of his army , said

0:33

to Abraham God is with you

0:35

in all that you do Now

0:37

. Therefore , swear to me here

0:40

by God , that you will not

0:42

deal falsely with me or with

0:44

my descendants or with my posterity

0:47

, but as I have dealt

0:49

kindly with you , so you

0:51

will deal with me and

0:53

with the land where you have sojourned

0:55

. And Abraham said

0:58

I will swear . When

1:01

Abraham reproved Abimalik about

1:03

a well of water that Abimalik's servants

1:06

had seized , abimalik said

1:08

I do not know who has

1:10

done this thing . You did not

1:12

tell me and I have not heard

1:14

of it until today . So

1:17

Abraham took sheep and oxen

1:19

and gave them to Abimalik , and the

1:21

two men made a covenant . Abraham

1:24

set seven yulams of the

1:26

flock apart and Abimalik

1:28

said to Abraham what is

1:30

the meaning of these seven yulams

1:33

that you've set apart , these seven

1:35

yulams ? You will take from my hand

1:37

that this may be a witness

1:39

for me that I dug

1:42

this . Well , as

1:44

we dig into this text and look at this

1:46

oath that Abraham is taking

1:48

with Abimalik . Let's remind

1:51

ourselves who Abimalik is . Abimalik

1:53

is the king of Gerar , he's the king

1:56

of the Philistines and

1:58

his reign was for many years . Two

2:00

weeks ago we learned he reigned during

2:03

the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah . Here

2:05

we see Abraham making a covenant

2:07

with him and later in Genesis

2:09

, when Isaac is full grown

2:11

, we will see Abimalik still

2:13

the king of Gerar . Fikol

2:17

is the commander of Abimalik's

2:19

army and he as well

2:22

will remain the commander

2:24

for many years , both during

2:27

the lives of Abraham and Isaac

2:29

. And as we

2:31

saw in Genesis , chapter 20 , abimalik

2:34

came to have a fear

2:36

or respect for Abraham's

2:38

God , and Abimalik has a

2:40

respect for Abraham as a prophet

2:43

of God , not

2:45

because Abimalik follows the

2:48

Lord God , but he has seen the power

2:50

of Abraham's God and

2:52

he is genuinely afraid

2:54

. So

2:58

Abimelech is saying swear to me here

3:00

, by God , that you will not deal

3:03

falsely with me . From

3:05

the context of this discussion , abimelech

3:08

doesn't trust the business dealings of

3:10

Abraham , and this really falls

3:12

into the larger relationship that

3:14

Abimelech has had with Abraham

3:16

, because about approximately

3:19

six years prior , abraham

3:22

had lied to Abimelech about

3:24

his relationship with Sarah , and

3:26

that's when the Lord God had come to Abimelech

3:29

in a dream and threatened his very life

3:31

for taking a married woman . Abimelech

3:35

reminds Abraham how he has

3:37

dealt kindly with him . He's asking

3:40

Abraham to swear to

3:42

deal kindly with him , to deal honestly

3:44

with him , and Abraham says I

3:47

swear . Abraham assures Abimelech

3:49

that he's not going to deceive him in this

3:52

matter . Now , when Abraham swears

3:54

to Abimelech , he also reproves

3:57

Abimelech about a well . That's

3:59

been an issue . The

4:01

Hebrew language implies that

4:03

Abraham's been trying to talk with

4:05

Abimelech several times over

4:08

a well that he has dug

4:10

, but Abimelech's servants had

4:12

taken it over . It

4:15

seemed that Abimelech was avoiding

4:17

this conversation with Abraham . Having

4:21

over a working well was not an uncommon

4:24

thing in the desert , which

4:26

is why we will see this very well revisited

4:29

again with Isaac in Genesis

4:31

, chapter 26 . But

4:34

we see that the two men agree and

4:36

the two men make a covenant . In

4:39

verse 27 we see Abraham took

4:41

sheep and oxen and gave them

4:43

to Abimelech . We

4:45

also know that ancient customs included

4:48

cutting animals in half

4:50

and walking through Abraham , which is

4:52

probably also something that was done

4:54

at this time between Abraham and

4:56

Abimelech . And then

4:58

Abraham sets seven U-lams

5:01

of the flock apart . The seven

5:03

U-lams were a separate gift

5:05

from the formal covenant

5:07

of peace , and Abimelech

5:09

asks Abraham what's the meaning

5:11

of these seven U-lams that he

5:13

set apart . Abraham

5:16

tells him that those seven U-lams

5:18

are to be a witness to everyone

5:21

that Abraham dug the well

5:23

. Abimelech

5:25

, taking those seven U-lams publicly

5:28

obligated him to acknowledge

5:31

that Abraham had dug that

5:33

well . Therefore

5:36

, that place was called Birsheba

5:38

because they're both of them sworn

5:41

oath To

5:43

. Couple of notes on Birsheba it's a town

5:45

in the Negeb that still exists

5:48

today . Birsheba is often

5:50

mentioned in Scripture as the southernmost

5:52

part of the Israelite kingdom . It's

5:55

located about 45 miles southwest

5:58

of Jerusalem . Birsheba

6:00

drives its name from the word

6:02

saba , which means to

6:04

swear an oath . That phrase

6:07

, to swear an oath , occurs three

6:09

times in our text today

6:11

. It is worth noting

6:13

that the root word saba is similar

6:15

to seven and some scholars

6:18

believe Birsheba means the

6:20

well of seven . However

6:22

, we see in verse 31 that

6:25

Scripture only gives reference to

6:27

its name being called Birsheba because

6:30

both of them sworn oath . So

6:33

they made a covenant at Birsheba . Then

6:35

Abimelech and Flaikal , the

6:38

commander of his army , rose up and

6:40

returned to the land of the Philistines

6:43

. And again in

6:45

verse 32 we see that Abimelech

6:48

and Flaikal are Philistines

6:50

and they're returning to the land of the Philistines

6:53

. And Abraham planted a

6:55

tamarisk tree in Birsheba

6:57

and called there on

6:59

the name of the Lord , the everlasting

7:02

God , and Abraham

7:04

sojourned many days in

7:07

the land of the Philistines

7:09

. Abraham planting

7:11

a tamarisk tree is

7:13

to commemorate how the Lord had worked

7:15

to bring peace between himself

7:17

and Abimelech . Abraham

7:19

is establishing a permanent oasis

7:21

where he has water and shade

7:24

in the promised land . Birsheba

7:27

would mark one of Abraham's worship

7:29

sites where he called on the Lord

7:32

, the everlasting God . Thank

7:35

you for joining me this week . Join

7:37

me next week for an in-depth look

7:39

at the sacrifice of

7:42

Isaac . God bless you

7:44

this week .
