As a non US citizen, I always thought that Jefferson was the 2nd being how famous he was, after Washington. No wonder I have never heard of Adams since he didn't even have a monument and I think the lack of depiction in popular culture. But it is wise that since they wanted to be anything but a monarchy, so the best way is to remove monuments of singular person that best signifies monarchy.
