SHOW NOTES
This show is for entertainment purposes only.
Operation HIGHJUMP wasn't the first of its kind, but it was far and away the most ambitious antarctic polar exploration in recorded history. In 1946, when the US Navy sent an estimated one-third of its entire fleet to Antarctica, very little was known about this remote and frozen continent. The official purpose was scientific exploration, but was there an ulterior motive?
The mission was led by Admiral Richard Byrd and involved thousands of Navy personnel, over thirty ships, and even an aircraft carrier loaded with airplanes. It was the Admiral's fourth antarctic expedition, and this time he intended to venture further into the uncharted depths of the continent than ever before.
In this episode, we explore the lore surrounding this infamous adventure and attempt to uncover what Admiral Byrd's team encountered at the south pole.
