Aloha gentle listeners,  I am so excited you could join me for this amazing episode of Random Acts of Living! Today we are talking story with the amazing artist and human, Jonas Vansteenskiste from his studio in Belgium.

I met Jonas when I was an artist in residency at the European Keramic  Work Center, Oistervik in the Netherlands in the summer of 2019.

We fell into an immediate friendship and of all the people I met that summer Jonas is able to make me laugh and felt so young at heart, I remember fondly being with him in his studio spending hours talking about art and how we make it and try to live from it, filled me with so much joy at a time in my life when I thought that I no longer deserved to feel that way.

I am forever grateful the universe put him in my path and I get to talk with him even as a pandemic and continents separate us. Jonas has continued to work through the pandemic and in this episode talks to his “pandemic calling “ of becoming an online curator of art brings to us what we should be seeing in person. Although it is not the same as seeing one of his installations in person it is something, it reminds us that the artists continue to speak and create especially when the world seemed to go silent we are here continuing the long history of storytelling through image and experience when the world is ready he will be ready.

Also, did I mention that he looks as if he could walk right out of a Rembrandt painting? It is true I kept thinking that he looked so familiar to me then I realized he reminded me of a portrait by Rembrandt..

“The works of the artist Jonas Vansteenkiste are defined by spaces.
He uses several media, i.e. installations, video, sculpture, photos, and drawings.
He refers to and uses – both in a physical and psychological way – architectural elements.
He builds up spaces, or creates situations that can best be defined as "mental spaces". Mental spaces have a resemblance with "Denkraum", a notion mostly found in philosophy and architecture. "Denkraum" can be seen as building walls, not only in but also from the chaos of one's own perception, emotions, and thoughts to express in a clear way these experiences and feelings.”

Most importantly we need  Jonas to experience  American Housing in person,  so please one of the many people I know let's get him a show here in the USA  to create an installation we need  to see his art in person!

Random Acts of Living

Host Emillia Noordhoek shares deeply personal, heartbreakingly poignant true stories about surviving personal loss and transforming trauma into “Random Acts of Living” a call to action to get her through some of her most challenging moments. Recounting an unusual childhood full of weird, wonderful and truly funny moments to loss and redemption as a very imperfect single mother, artist, partner and community activist, she explores the stories that appear in our lives in big and small ways, teaching us the joy of living and learning from day dreaming, singing out loud, being mischievous, to more serious endeavors such as art and music (both making and experiencing) community organizing, saving our democracy, social justice and climate change. We are all in this together and the stories that we tell and share with each other give us valuable insight into the state of our lives, both the public and private, because what seems random is really anything but! Emillia Noordhoek is a social entrepreneur, mentor, and artist having lived the last 13 years on the small island of Molokai, Hawaii. She is a co-founder of both Sust`aina ble Molokai and the Molokai Arts Center and currently finds herself in the Midwest in the middle of the global pandemic and personal crisis. Emillia has been deeply influenced by Native Hawaiian leaders through the Aloha `Aina movement integrating the values she was taught into her daily life. She seeks to find value and significance in the stories that shape our world and define us as members of this human race on the blue marble spinning in our universe. Join her every week for a unique take on living, breathing, and exploring our humanity through Random Acts of Living!
