In today’s healthcare environment of cost demands and a shrinking workforce, generalization in workforce planning will not suffice. Health systems must move beyond general planning and create comprehensive strategies that include not only budget and hiring forecasts, but also analysis of workforce composition, effective hiring practices (including programs that will attract and retain the workforce) and ways to layer in internal and external supplemental resources to meet volume swings.
