. One of the most frustrating feelings to me
1:36
is when I feel stuck in place . You
1:38
know that feeling when you want to make big changes , but
1:40
there are factors in place that are making you feel like your
1:43
feet are glued to the floor , like you're living
1:45
in the movie Groundhog Day . That
1:47
feeling is what I'm talking about . You know you're all excited
1:49
about a reinvention plan . You've thought up , or
1:52
maybe you've thought of , something new that you want
1:54
to try , and you've thought of all the possibilities
1:56
and started to make some serious considerations
1:58
about how to make things happen . And then , bam
2:00
, you get stuck . Getting stuck sucks
2:02
. Yeah , it's a nice little rhyme , right
2:04
, but seriously , it isn't good to feel
2:06
like you can't move forward , and it really isn't cool
2:09
when it's your fault . Yes , I
2:11
went there . Getting stuck is all on you
2:13
, my friend , but I'm here to help you get unstuck
2:15
. Your life is not meant to be on autopilot
2:18
. Let's talk about what causes well-intentioned
2:20
people to get stuck and what you can do about
2:22
it when it happens to you on your journey . As
2:25
an added bonus , I'm going to share winning quotes
2:27
from everyone's old friend , rocky
2:29
Balboa , to help emphasize some of the
2:31
points I share with you . Let's begin with getting
2:33
in your head . Getting in your head and second
2:35
guessing yourself is one of the top ways to get stuck
2:38
. Reinvention is hard , but it doesn't have
2:40
to be that hard . When you think of the whole
2:42
picture all at once , it can be overwhelming
2:44
. When you think of one step at a time , it
2:46
can become manageable . Trying not to overthink
2:48
is really important . When you feel yourself
2:50
start to spiral , it can lead to inertia , and
2:53
inertia is the enemy of reinvention
2:55
. If I get in my head too much , the first
2:57
thing I do believe it or not is I sit
2:59
down and I make a list . Now , this might not
3:01
be for everyone , but this is something that works for
3:04
me , so I'm going to share it . Just making a list
3:06
makes me feel like I'm doing something , and
3:08
once I make the list , I go back and I break
3:10
down each component of the list with action steps
3:12
. If I'm really in my head , I
3:14
will start with the first one or two items . I don't
3:16
even force myself to do the whole list , because
3:18
sometimes that just feels like too much homework . Then
3:21
, when I get those done , I have at least a few action
3:23
steps to work on . Working on even one action
3:25
step can help you get out of your head and back in
3:27
the game . I encourage you to try this . You'd be surprised
3:30
at how well it works . As Rocky Balboa
3:32
said , one step at a time , one
3:34
punch at a time , one round at a time
3:36
. Another thing that can get you stuck is finances
3:39
and , let's face it , this is a real concern
3:41
for a lot of people . If you're not independently
3:43
wealthy , have rich parents or a trust
3:45
fund , you're likely working to keep a roof over
3:47
your head , a car in your driveway , the
3:49
heat turned on in your home , things like that . It's
3:52
so easy to make the excuse that you can't change anything
3:54
. Because what if you don't have enough money to live ? I'm
3:56
not here to lie to you . That is reality
3:58
, and it's the reality for most reinvention journeys
4:01
. So how do you get the money excuse to
4:03
not be a viable excuse ? Well
4:05
, it's about a mindset shift rather
4:07
than an actual money shift . For the average
4:09
person , there will never be enough time or money . But
4:12
you're not average , are you ? I don't think
4:14
you are , and reinvention is one of
4:16
those things that you have to really want to do . So
4:18
there are ways to get out of the money excuse . Maybe
4:20
work a side job briefly to help build up the coffers
4:23
a little bit so you feel a little bit more secure . That's
4:25
one step that's temporary , that can help kickstart
4:27
your reinvention . Or maybe wake up
4:29
earlier so you have a little more time to work on some
4:31
aspect of your plan , or stay up
4:34
later or go out a little less to save
4:36
time and money to put towards your journey . You've
4:38
got to really want this , and if you really want it
4:40
, you can change your mindset to see past
4:42
your excuse and onto the next part of your journey
4:44
. Next up is the instant gratification
4:46
excuse . Reinvention is hard
4:49
, trying something new is hard
4:51
, but at the risk of more platitudes
4:53
, nothing worth it is ever really
4:55
easy . Expecting your journey to be quick
4:57
and painless and then realizing it won't be can
4:59
get you stuck . Just because it isn't easy
5:01
doesn't mean you shouldn't do it , though . When you
5:04
feel stuck because you hit a wall or a roadblock
5:06
, just take a brief , finite amount
5:08
of time to process and regroup . Then
5:10
pivot the heck out of that mess and try something different
5:12
to keep moving forward . There are always going
5:15
to be difficult parts to these types of journeys . As
5:17
Rocky Balboa once said , it
5:19
ain't about how hard you hit , it's about
5:21
how hard you can hit and keep moving forward
5:24
. How much you can take and keep moving forward
5:26
. That's how winning is done . Another
5:28
thing people get stuck on is the fear excuse
5:30
. You know the definition of
5:32
courage is acting not in the absence of fear
5:35
, but in spite of fear . There are
5:37
a lot of things to be afraid of . Fear
5:39
can really weasel its way into the best reinvention
5:41
plans and bring them to a screeching halt
5:43
. But remember nothing
5:45
changes if nothing changes . I
5:48
know it's scary , but I also know you do not
5:50
want fear to stop your journey . So
5:52
what do you do about it ? Talk to other people
5:54
who have been on a reinvention journey . Listen
5:56
to podcasts like this one to help you get outside
5:58
of your head . Read about the ways
6:00
other people navigated their own reinventions
6:03
. Look for inspiration
6:05
and not ways to be afraid . Just
6:07
don't sit and dwell on one aspect of this
6:09
journey Fear is there and it isn't
6:11
all bad . Fear can make you more conscientious
6:14
and help keep you on track sometimes . Just
6:16
don't let fear keep you stuck in one place , as
6:19
Rocky Balboa said . I think you
6:21
try harder when you're scared . Next
6:24
up is the stuff excuse . Another
6:26
way to get stuck is to think that , in order to pursue
6:28
whatever you want to pursue as part of your reinvention
6:30
journey , you think that you need to be able to buy
6:32
all the stuff needed to do what you want to do . And
6:35
if you can't get all the stuff , you put your journey on
6:37
hold until you can , and then
6:39
nothing gets done and eventually you are living
6:41
on autopilot . An example you
6:44
want to start a podcast , but someone told
6:46
you you need a really great microphone and a sound
6:48
board and a booth set up in your home . You
6:50
can't afford all those things , so you make a list and
6:52
then you get caught up in other things . The reality
6:55
is you don't actually need that expensive
6:57
microphone and you can podcast without a
6:59
sound board . It's important to give yourself a
7:01
wish list and then a reality check
7:03
Are the items need to haves or are they
7:05
nice to haves ? Know how to differentiate
7:07
between the two so you don't stop your journey
7:09
for reasons that aren't even reality the
7:12
other people excuse . It's easy to
7:14
get stuck when you have thoughts in your head and then
7:16
others start to give you their worst case scenarios
7:18
for your journey . This is really dangerous
7:20
because you need to be able to view your journey through your
7:22
own lens and not the lenses of other people
7:25
. Your journey is your own . It's a personal
7:27
one . I'm not saying that you can't ask
7:29
trusted people in your life for their insights or feedback
7:31
, but you have to trust yourself and
7:33
your gut instincts to move forward the way
7:35
that you see fit . If what you feel differs
7:38
from what others say , you need to have the confidence
7:40
to move forward anyway . That can be tricky
7:42
. The bottom line for this one is trust Trusting
7:45
others , but ultimately trusting yourself the most
7:47
and moving forward in a way that you believe is
7:49
right for you . I'm going to share another Rocky Balboa
7:51
quote here . I stopped thinking the way other
7:53
people think a long time ago . You got
7:55
to think like you think . The most important
7:58
question in all of this is what are your dreams worth
8:00
to you ? Hopefully this has given you some insight
8:02
into excuse pitfalls to look for on
8:04
your journey . Yes , getting stuck happens
8:06
. It's actually very common . Knowing
8:09
what could happen and how to work around it productively
8:11
will help you stay on your path to reinvention
8:13
. That path is yours and yours alone
8:16
. Every reinvention is a unique one
8:18
. Really , everyone's path in life
8:20
is a unique one . Find inspiration
8:22
that keeps you moving . The bottom line of all
8:24
of this is that any excuse is an excuse
8:26
if you allow yourself to go there . So
8:28
don't Like seriously . Do not allow
8:30
yourself to make excuses to halt your journey
8:32
. Give yourself grace throughout the process
8:35
, but at no point should you allow yourself
8:37
to permanently stop a journey you really
8:39
want to be on . Just put one foot
8:41
in front of the other and keep stepping forward , and
8:44
soon you'll be walking closer to your goal
8:46
than you ever thought possible . Thank
8:48
you for listening Until next time . Thanks
9:18
for listening to this episode of Reinvention
