Show Notes for episode #11:

Hot Topic #1 When does OLD start?image

There s a video by AARP that s blowing away a few myths about aging. In the video, they gather a group of millennials, people from age 19 to 35 and they start by posing an intriguing question: “What age do you consider to be old?” The answers from most will alarm you… they see the starting point for old being in the 40s and 50s… YIKES!

The video continues, asking these millennials to show how an old person would cross the street, how an old person would send a text message, do a push up or do jumping jacks. One by one, these millennials act out how an old person would do these things and as you might imagine, their movements were slow, labored, and with plenty of groans and confusion.

Then they brought in a group of Boomers, ages 55 to 75 and they paired up each Millennial with a Boomer. They asked each pair to spend a couple of minutes together and teach each other something they re good at. It was interesting to watch this unfold and most chose more physical things — dancing, exercise, yoga, self defense .

As this exercise continued to play out, there was tremendous bonding going on between each pair and the expressions on the faces of these Millennials revealed that the OLD ages they called out earlier might not be so accurate. Following this exercise, most called out 70s, 80s and 90s.

And the priceless comment from one of the Boomers: “When people start stopping, that s when they start getting old.”

Ahh, but staying engaged in work you enjoy on a part-time basis is one way to push back this concept of stopping. Ponder that one for a bit then go start something remarkable and when you do, make sure there are a few millennials watching.
