M Welcome
0:06
to Induction Vault, a production of I
0:09
Heart Radio and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

0:30
Shania Twain honored one of her greatest
0:32
influences, The Mamas and the Papas, as
0:34
she inducted them into the Rock and Roll Hall
0:36
of Fame. The Mamas and
0:38
the Papas ushered in a new movement in rock,
0:41
a true California sound that proved
0:43
itself to be fully formed even from
0:45
their very first single. Michelle
0:47
Phillips, Denny Doherty, and John
0:50
Phillips graciously accept their award
0:52
with a little help from Cass Elliott's daughter
0:54
Owen, who credits her mother's embrace
0:57
of the positive power of rock and roll still
1:00
today, fifty five years after their debut
1:02
album, The rich harmonies of the
1:04
Mammas and the Papas live on as the
1:06
soundtrack for the Summer of Love, proving
1:09
that rock music is also for the lovers
1:12
and the dreams.
1:15
Thank thank
1:17
you so much. This is such
1:20
a fantastic evening. I'm
1:22
sure everyone's having a wonderful, wonderful time, but
1:25
I'm having the time of my life. I am so
1:27
honored to be here tonight, being
1:29
able to participate in the induction of
1:32
my biggest influences, especially as a child
1:35
in music, and that is The Moments and the Papas
1:41
in nineteen sixty six. That's
1:43
a while ago. In nineteen sixty six, pop
1:46
music was in the middle of one of
1:48
its greatest periods of change. England
1:50
with its never ending stream of rock bands,
1:53
New York with his revolutionary
1:55
songwriters like Bob Dylan and
1:57
Detroit, and Memphis with their new
1:59
directions in R and B. All
2:01
of this was happening at the same exhilarating
2:04
moments. But it was also a time
2:06
when the country and the music was moving west,
2:09
and it was a magical record by our
2:11
next inductees that heralded
2:13
that development. Of course, that
2:15
song was California Dreaming and
2:17
the group was The Mamas and the Papas. Rarely
2:22
has a group emerged so fully formed
2:25
on a first single. But John Phillips,
2:27
Michelle Phillips, Denny Doherty
2:30
and the late Cass Elliott had a great
2:32
deal of individual experience, yes uh,
2:35
much of it um as part of the vibrant
2:37
folk scene of the early sixties, and they
2:39
were ready for action when their time came. Their
2:43
blend of to male and two
2:45
male, two male and two female voices,
2:48
was very rare at the time and added a richness
2:51
and depth to all of the group's work.
2:53
Although the group only existed for three years,
2:56
they left us with such shits as Monday,
2:58
Monday, I saw her again in Words
3:01
of Love, They're great cover version
3:03
of the Cherrell's dedicated to the One I Love
3:06
and the hilariously autobiographical
3:08
Greek Alley My nineteen
3:11
seventy one, I was
3:13
wearing out my eight track
3:15
tape of their music, which by that time
3:18
had already become classic. I
3:20
was six years old and mesmerized
3:22
by the beauty and serenity of their
3:24
vocal arrangements and their utterly
3:26
original musical style. They
3:29
may only have been together a short while,
3:31
but they left me with a lifetime of influence
3:34
and inspiration, and all of
3:36
us with beautiful, beautiful
3:38
music. Up
3:45
next with Michelle Phillips, Danny Doherty
3:47
and John Phillips accept their award with
3:49
a little help from cast Ellie's daughter Owen,
3:51
on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
3:54
Bault, very
3:59
good, thank
4:03
you very much. We've
4:05
been waiting here all day to do this,
4:08
as most of you have, so without further Ado,
4:10
We'll try to get on with us. I'd like to say thank you very much
4:13
for the honor. I'd like to
4:15
thank my wife Jeanette, and my
4:17
kids John and Emberley and
4:19
Jessica, and UH absent
4:22
friends cass Elliott,
4:25
whose daughter Owen has
4:29
come up to receive the award for mom.
4:37
She didn't want to come up, but re gragular
4:40
Uh. I'd like to thank my fellow Canadians
4:42
and I a Twain for the introductions,
4:46
and to all the Canadians,
4:48
congratulations for
4:50
being Canadian. Michelle
4:53
safe few words, thank
4:55
you very much to the
4:58
Academy. First
5:03
of all, I would like to
5:06
thank Lou Adler, our
5:08
producer, who without the
5:11
fifth MoMA this would never have happened. I
5:14
have to thank Hew Blaine, Larry Nictal,
5:17
Joe Osborne and Bones how
5:20
our crew, and Bobby Roberts,
5:22
har manager and I thank
5:24
you all very much. And John say
5:27
if he works. But
5:31
I want to thank the same people that Michelle
5:33
thanked. There's the best rhythm section
5:35
I've ever played with Joe Osborne
5:38
and Larry Ntelle and Hal Blaine and
5:41
they're wonderful guys and Lou Elders, but greatest
5:43
producer writer, I for met my wife and
5:46
we're really happy to be here. Thank you very much. And
5:48
I thank my wife Arnez, especially
5:50
because I think I probably be dead
5:53
right now the welcome for her. Thank you very much.
6:04
I'm thrilled to be here to represent my mother
6:06
on this historic occasion. Yeah,
6:15
it's hard to believe that it's been almost
6:17
twenty four years since the world lost cast
6:19
Elliott. Then,
6:22
as now, rock and roll was suspected
6:24
of corrupting teenagers and
6:27
threatening family values. But
6:30
my mother recognized the positive power
6:32
of rock and roll and was one
6:35
of the first to encourage young people
6:37
to participate in the political process. I'm
6:40
grateful for this opportunity to reaffirm
6:42
my mother's ideals at a time
6:44
when we celebrate her incredible talent and
6:46
the brilliance of the music of the Mama's and Papas.
6:50
And I'd
6:59
just like to say more thing that
7:01
I know. I have personal
7:04
knowledge that Casts is sitting on top
7:06
of that big full moon tonight, looking
7:09
down on these proceedings wearing
7:12
a size six Terry muglad
7:14
dress and thanking you
