M. Welcome

0:06

to Induction Vault, a production of I

0:09

Heart Radio and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

0:15

M hmm. The

0:25

Temptations are the quintessential Motown

0:27

vocal group. They set the standard

0:29

with their sense of style, show stopping

0:32

dance moves, and vocal harmony that was

0:34

deeply rooted in spirituals and gospel

0:36

music. They were inducted

0:38

into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in nine

0:40

by Darryl Hall and John Oates. John

0:43

shares the incredible impact of the Temptations

0:45

had on his band, as well as so many

0:48

others, even admitting quote,

0:50

we still haven't even go close. Darrell

0:54

describes the power of the original lead singer,

0:56

the late great Paul Williams, and

0:59

in tribute, they both begin to sing the Temptations

1:01

classic Don't Look Back. The

1:04

audience goes wild as the members of the group

1:06

come on stage to join in the song, including

1:09

the deep bass voice of Melvin Franklin

1:12

and the lead of Dennis Edwards. The

1:15

Temptations go on to thank the Rock Hall

1:17

and acknowledge the spiritual power of the

1:19

Lord for giving them the inspiration

1:21

to sing, perform, and share

1:23

their music with the world. Oh

1:32

Damn Yeah,

1:34

how are you doing tonight? Alrighty,

1:36

all right? How many people out there are Temptations

1:39

freaks?

1:42

Well you know that we are, right, yeah,

1:45

you know we are. Now in the mid sixties,

1:48

when Darrel and I got together, there

1:50

were a million vocal groups. Now they in

1:52

those days you had to have uniforms, right well,

1:54

the Temptations always had the best always

1:58

the best dresses, that's right, man, you know. And

2:00

of course you had to have steps, and

2:03

the Temptations had the best steps.

2:06

Positive Now you

2:08

know, you had to sing, and

2:12

you know that the Temptations could sing. Now,

2:15

we had Eddie Kendrick with his falsetto.

2:18

I think that's kind of set the standard

2:20

for what's happening. You had David

2:22

Ruffin with a voice that sends chills

2:25

up your arms, you know what I mean. You

2:29

had Otis, who put the whole thing together, and

2:33

you had Melvin Franklin, who is quite possibly

2:35

the best bass singer of all time, the lowest bass singer

2:37

in the world, right and

2:40

to us it was everything. I mean, we

2:43

tried our best and uh we still

2:45

haven't even got close but close.

2:48

Good about that. But there's one more

2:50

guy that we forgot to mention, yeah,

2:52

well, yeah, you know, well the

2:54

whole thing is like seeing those guys in the sixties was

2:56

amazing. But you gotta remember, you know, they never stopped.

2:59

You know, they still they're still gigging on,

3:01

you know, and through all their trial and tribulations,

3:03

through all the personnel changes, and through all the

3:05

personal problems and everything, you know that there's

3:07

still uh

3:10

what am I saying? You know, they're they're still out there.

3:12

You know, they're still working. And but

3:15

that's what it's all about. That is what it's all about. You

3:17

know that, that's what this is all about tonight. You know, this isn't

3:19

about just the past. This is about the

3:21

past blending into the present

3:24

and uh yeah,

3:27

transcending all that stuff. You know, this

3:32

isn't about old people. This is about people

3:34

that are digging right now. In fact, most of the people

3:37

that are inducted tonight are still gigging right now.

3:39

You know. I mean there's a few people in are, but most people are.

3:42

But there's one person that, uh I like to

3:44

talk about that can't be here tonight. You know,

3:47

everybody has made it tonight, or everybody that

3:49

could make it, is one person that couldn't

3:51

make it And uh

3:53

uh. I think in some ways he was the soul of

3:55

the Temptations. He was the guy that was the original,

3:58

the original lead singer. He kind came

4:00

up with all the steps and everything. And I got to know

4:02

him a little bit back in the sixties when I was like seventeen

4:05

years old whatever, you know. But you

4:07

know his name is Paul Williams, the late Paul

4:09

Williams. And I

4:12

wish he could be here tonight, I really do. I

4:14

know he's here somewhere. And

4:17

he used to sing. He used

4:19

to sing this one song. He used to end end the show

4:21

with one song in the old days in the sixties,

4:23

and he used to sing the song don't Look Back,

4:26

and uh

4:30

do you want me to sing singing

4:33

man run? Okay, if

4:36

it's love, that's you're running from.

4:39

There's no hiding play can't

4:42

run, you can't hide, you can't

4:44

run. And those problems I

4:47

know that the one you

4:49

just have he run,

4:52

you can't hide here run,

4:54

So just just put your

4:56

hand in mind. We're

4:59

got to leave all troubles

5:01

behind, keep on walking in Donna

5:04

look back, don't love

5:06

door about the past, and don't love

5:08

back baby they love

5:12

and don't look back. Don't

5:15

he

5:17

heylind

5:19

you bind

5:22

you if your first love broke

5:24

your heart, there's

5:26

something that honey play

5:30

came your

5:35

love can't well

5:37

a baby love if

5:41

you jest, put your hand in

5:43

mind good

5:45

even keep

5:48

walking dog the back, baby,

5:51

don't look don't

5:54

love back battle

5:56

baby, don't macing.

6:01

No, no, no, no, don't babe,

6:05

don't look at We had

6:07

to come up. I'm sorry about that job.

6:12

It's a great pleasure to introduced to Temptation. After

6:23

the break, we will hear from the Temptations

6:25

on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction

6:27

volt. Oh,

6:35

thank you very much, and

6:38

we thank the Lodger's Place for

6:41

happing us to a great job and coming

6:43

into the Hall of Fame. And I'll

6:46

let the rest of the guys speak for themselves.

6:54

Thank you. It's indeed a pleasure being

6:56

here. I like to say thank

6:58

God because we had no idea

7:00

that we would be here twenty nine years later. I

7:03

wish Paul Williams was here to share in this honor.

7:10

I'd like to thank our

7:12

manager, Shelley Burger, Jerald Busby,

7:15

Abe Summers, almen, everyone

7:18

that was responsible for us being

7:20

here, and thank

7:22

you all for a whole night, of course, Thank you very guy.

7:28

Oh, David Jr. Happy

7:30

birthday, David Ruffian today is his birthday.

7:37

Really, thank

7:40

you very much. This

7:43

is really wonderful. You're

7:45

looking back through the years of when

7:49

I first heard the temptation saying, I

7:52

knew right there and there that was a sound that

7:56

really reminded me of something that we saw a little

7:58

bit earlier. They

8:00

showed a picture of Mrs Harris and J. J. M.

8:03

Soulstairs, and

8:06

I remember Sam's about eighteen and nineteen

8:09

we stop up the show for the Soulstairs and

8:13

I still have that picture sitting on his knee right today.

8:16

And when I heard the Temptations saying, it reminded

8:18

me of the spiritual background

8:21

that I came from.

8:23

And I really hope that somewhere in

8:26

your heart that we have put

8:29

a little up and

8:32

our thought remained from

8:34

the endurance that we

8:37

have been

8:40

through through the years. But this makes up

8:42

for a lot of it. I like

8:44

to say to all of you, thank you, and God bless

8:46

you, and thank you Tempo. Thank

8:56

you so much. I'd like to say, first of all, it I

8:59

like a thank God for giving

9:01

me the opportunity to sing

9:03

with the greatest group in the world. You

9:07

know. I

9:09

know that at the late Great

9:11

Paul Williams has been here, I wouldn't be up here.

9:13

But I just want to thank him

9:16

for showing me my way when he was in the group.

9:19

He gave me all all the inspiration

9:21

I needed. And I just thank God that I'm a

9:23

part of this great unit. Thank you. Before

9:33

the

9:36

before the

9:38

the festivities started this evening, I

9:40

was led to call all of my

9:42

brother Temptations together, including Ron

9:44

Tyson, Richard Street in Holly Woodson, and

9:47

I read to them from the Bible Deuteronomy,

9:51

second chapter twenty one first, because

9:54

there's a lot of time ahead for the Temptations,

9:56

and I said, Oh, Lord God, thou

9:59

hast begun just to us thy servants,

10:01

the greatness of thy hand and thy

10:03

mighty hand. We thank all of you

10:05

for your support over the years, and we strive

10:08

to be worthy of the good things you've

10:10

given us. And there's almighty praise

10:12

from the Temptations. Thank you so much.
