0:29

Read it, PG-13. You're

0:33

listening to DraftKings

0:35

Network. You're

0:40

tuned in to the Ross Tucker football

0:42

podcast. Guiding your gridiron journey, none other

0:44

than your host, former NFL lineman Ross

0:46

Tucker. Oh,

0:49

yeah it is. But it's not just

0:51

any Ross Tucker football

0:53

podcast. It is a teaching

0:56

tutorial Thursday. A fun one

0:58

today. We've got super

1:01

agent Drew Rosenhaus in

1:03

the house. Rosenhaus in the house. Looking

1:06

forward to finding out more

1:08

and learning some. I want to learn

1:10

today about what the agent business is

1:12

like now, how it's changed. Maybe

1:15

some of his clients this year,

1:17

Blake Corum, Jevon Bullard, of

1:20

course, J.C. Latham, the first round pick.

1:22

Looking forward to talking with Drew momentarily.

1:24

But you know what? I

1:26

try to do it every week. I love

1:29

all the listeners and everybody that

1:31

watches us, youtube.com/Ross Tucker NFL. I

1:34

like to reward those of you

1:37

that go the extra mile like

1:40

Michael Raleigh, who quote

1:42

posted Emery's comment

1:45

about Keon Coleman getting buckets,

1:47

comparing him to George Pickens,

1:50

quote posted a clip from the

1:52

college draft. Michael, you're the winner. Send

1:55

me an email, Ross at

1:57

rosstucker.com. Let me know whether you either have a

1:59

question or not. a signed picture or

2:01

football card or one of these

2:03

awesome press passes from last season.

2:06

Speaking of that, the sponsor confirmation

2:08

email winner, Doug Wixted.

2:10

Doug got his

2:12

wife, I think he can't remember if it was his wife or

2:14

his mom, one of them, a story

2:17

from myfrontpagestory.com, by far the

2:20

best Mother's Day gift I've

2:22

ever heard of and

2:24

it's automatic. I mean Doug's the winner, but

2:26

it's automatic if you get a loved one,

2:29

the best Mother's Day gift I'm

2:31

aware of, coolest most unique of

2:34

all time, myfrontpagestory.com, you automatically get

2:36

a signed autograph and

2:38

then the YouTube shout out

2:41

youtube.com/Ross Tucker NFL, that's John

2:43

April and he literally just

2:45

commented on a YouTube video saying, hey Ross,

2:47

I'm just here for the autograph. So

2:50

John, hit me up with an email now,

2:52

ross at rosstucker.com. It's

2:55

big show time. The

2:57

big show. Well,

3:00

we don't talk with agents very often here on

3:02

the Ross Tucker football podcast, but you get a

3:04

chance to talk with Drew

3:07

Rosenhaus, especially after the NFL draft

3:09

just took place. You have to take that opportunity. Drew,

3:12

thanks so much for coming on the show, man, really

3:14

appreciate it. Happy to be here

3:16

Ross. Yes, it was a

3:18

crazy, crazy three days.

3:20

I don't think people realize the,

3:24

what you do as an agent with the

3:26

draft. It is, it is unbelievable. I was,

3:28

I was in the green room Thursday

3:31

night with JC Latham who went seventh

3:34

overall to the Texans and then

3:37

hustled over to a town

3:39

called Millageville, Georgia in

3:42

rural Georgia, about two hours outside

3:44

of Atlanta with Jevon Bullard from

3:46

the University of Georgia, the safety who went

3:49

in the second round to the

3:51

Packers. And then I flew to Miami to

3:54

be on Saturday with a day

3:56

three client of ours named Jarvis

3:59

Brownlee. who was drafted in

4:01

the fifth round, a cornerback out of

4:03

Louisville, also by the

4:05

Titans, and just the

4:07

drama, just being around

4:09

the families, the anxiety

4:12

that they feel before they get

4:14

picked, the jubilation. Once

4:17

they're selected, there's a lot

4:19

of ups and downs, a lot of highs and

4:21

lows, but there's nothing like the NFL Draft. Yeah,

4:25

Andrew, you've been a part of it for a long time,

4:27

man. You've been a part of it since I

4:29

was in college, you know, watching the

4:31

draft before I was in it. I

4:35

guess that's one question I have, and

4:37

we'll get back to your guys in particular, but

4:40

what's sort of the biggest changes

4:42

to the draft, and maybe

4:44

just the whole process that you've seen over

4:47

the last 30-plus years? Yes,

4:50

so this is my 36th NFL

4:53

Draft as an agent, and I

4:56

remember going to the draft when a handful

4:58

of people showed up at

5:01

Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

5:07

They were like football geeks

5:09

and football nerds that would show

5:11

up and comment on the

5:13

picks. Now you get a million people

5:15

out there. It's unbelievable

5:18

that it's on three different networks,

5:20

and the ratings were equivalent

5:22

to like a football game. The

5:25

draft has just grown tremendously

5:28

since my first one in 1988, so

5:32

that really comes to mind just how

5:35

big a production it is and how

5:37

huge it is, and Ross,

5:40

it's just amazing

5:43

to see you travel around the country

5:45

and attract hundreds of

5:47

thousands of fans and, you

5:50

know, really score huge ratings.

5:53

The NFL is just an amazing

5:55

product, and the draft is

5:57

just another part of, you know,

6:00

incredible popularity I've witnessed over the

6:02

last three decades. Yeah,

6:04

it's crazy. I'm curious, Drew, when

6:06

you were starting, were there

6:08

a lot of people that wanted

6:10

to be agents because I'd say

6:12

since my rookie year in 01, I've talked

6:15

to so many people, especially in the last

6:17

15 years, like they really want to

6:19

be an agent. I'm always like, yeah, good luck, bro. That

6:23

is a tough, tough business to crack into

6:26

now. What was it like, like late eight

6:28

years, early nineties? Was there still that many

6:30

guys or was it, was it easier to

6:32

kind of get in and get clients back

6:34

then? I think it was

6:37

definitely easier when I broke in, in 1988. Remember

6:39

I was, I was 22 years old. Uh,

6:42

I was a law student at Duke university.

6:45

And my second year when I first became

6:47

an agent, it was so

6:49

different. Now you've got super

6:52

agencies and NIL and

6:54

you know, you, you, uh, pay

6:57

for the guys training and it's

6:59

a marketing is a big part of it. And

7:02

none of that existed when I first broke in

7:05

when, um, the business

7:07

really took off in terms

7:09

of people wanting to be agents was

7:12

right after Jerry McGuire. When

7:14

Tom, when Tom Cruz played

7:17

an agent, I mean, it

7:19

just added this, uh, layer

7:21

of interest where people saw that

7:23

movie. It was a mainstream movie.

7:26

It wasn't like a football movie. It

7:28

was a top top

7:30

movie. And, and that really,

7:32

uh, I think drew a lot of people to

7:34

the industry that wanted to be like

7:36

Jerry McGuire. You know, they thought they'd get Renee

7:39

Zellwinger out of it or Kelly Preston

7:41

or, you know, represent

7:43

one guy and like a

7:46

tube, tube of Gooding's character, right? Say well, and

7:48

become a star. Uh,

7:50

but it isn't, it isn't an easy profession.

7:52

It's very challenging. You know, I

7:54

went to law school at Duke and paid

7:57

my dues and I work

7:59

extremely hard. I work seven days a week,

8:02

year round, around the clock. There's

8:04

no breaks. There's no vacations. People

8:07

are like, oh, the draft's over. You can relax.

8:09

Come on. Are you kidding me? We're working on

8:12

contract extensions and free

8:15

agency and getting a rookie

8:17

signed and, you know, trades

8:20

and guys coming off

8:22

of surgeries and it's

8:24

a year round profession. There's

8:27

no downtime. Teams

8:29

are getting ready for OTAs and the

8:31

off season's about to crank up and,

8:33

you know, clients are calling me.

8:35

They're not happy with their playing time. You

8:38

know, they want more or they

8:40

want to be traded or they want a new contract

8:42

or, you know, guys get released.

8:44

The NFL's fluid year

8:47

round. Nothing stays the

8:49

same. So as an agent,

8:51

you're like water. You're constantly moving and

8:54

it's an incredible challenge

8:57

right now with NIL because that's year

8:59

round and that's eternal. We used

9:01

to recruit, you know, juniors and

9:03

seniors for six months and that was

9:05

it. Now you can sign

9:07

guys at a high school or in high

9:10

school and through freshmen and

9:12

you got to be working around the clock for the

9:14

NIL guys too. I

9:17

was just going to ask you about that.

9:19

How things changed with NIL? I

9:21

mean, are you talking to high school kids? Are

9:23

you talking to true freshmen? I guess it sounds

9:25

like you kind of have to on some level.

9:28

Yeah, you know, we

9:30

do sign guys that are true

9:33

freshmen. We typically sign

9:35

guys that are in college

9:39

or entering college and you start

9:41

working for them on

9:43

their marketing, on their endorsements, on

9:46

their public relations, media relations, charitable

9:49

work. And

9:51

so for us, we had to hire

9:53

a lot

9:55

more staff to

9:58

add to the NIL. I'll work because we

10:00

don't want to take away from the work

10:03

that we do for our, you

10:05

know, approximately a hundred or so

10:07

active clients. So, for

10:09

us, we've had to expand. We

10:13

have to address

10:16

a different clientele, but.

10:19

You know, you don't complain, man, you just roll up your

10:21

sleeves and you go to work and you

10:23

make the most of it. A lot of the guys that

10:25

we represent in the draft this year were NIL

10:28

clients. Like I mentioned, JC Latham, who

10:30

was seventh overall pick. Our relationship

10:32

with him started two years ago as an

10:35

NIL client. So we're grateful for that and

10:38

we'll keep it going. I

10:40

was just going to ask you about JC

10:42

in particular and when that relationship started. So

10:44

I had seen the night before, Drew, a

10:47

couple of mocks that had JC Latham

10:50

going to the chargers at five,

10:52

including Daniel Jeremiah, who does

10:55

the Chargers games on the radio

10:57

and Peter Schrager, who's usually

10:59

pretty locked in. So I thought,

11:02

oh, he's going there. You know, I thought

11:04

that's where he's going. I'm

11:06

guessing maybe you did too. Just walk me

11:08

through where you're at with JC. Did you

11:10

think he was going to the Chargers? Did

11:13

you know he wasn't? How did

11:15

that unfold? We,

11:18

we, we saw that

11:20

it was unlikely that they were

11:22

going to take him. And the primary reason

11:25

for that is the Chargers did not

11:27

bring JC in for a top

11:29

30 visit. Historically,

11:33

when a team invests

11:36

a top five pitch, they

11:38

will bring the player to the facility,

11:40

meet with all the coaches, go

11:43

through a very extensive process.

11:48

For the Chargers, they did

11:52

send their offensive line coach to

11:54

JC's Pro Day, but there wasn't

11:56

a lot of interaction Outside

11:58

of the Combine. Between Che

12:01

Sia and. Cochabamba.

12:03

Or drill or thieves. The.

12:05

New Gm so we didn't feel the

12:07

love. For. Example that we did

12:10

with some of the other teams. So

12:12

we've We've We're not. Betting.

12:15

On that we did say. That.

12:17

If he got a to tennessee. He.

12:20

Would be played by the Titans. The was a

12:22

very strong. Relationship. They're.

12:25

Leading. Up to the draft the did

12:27

not exist. With. The Chargers

12:29

by comparison, Absolutely

12:31

love. The landing spot from Nashville

12:34

is amazing. Me not to Los

12:36

Angeles is bad. Bugs Nashville is

12:38

incredible. Alzheimer's they're just woken up

12:41

and down broadway to drink a

12:43

beer gone into all those hardened

12:45

towards absolutely amazing. To my bursaries

12:48

is Labatt Blue Light Drinker with

12:50

your friends live life to the

12:52

power of we always enjoy responsibly

12:55

Beer Labatt Usa. Buffalo.

12:57

New York To do you think that. Agents.

13:01

Have an impact on where a player

13:03

gets drafted. I

13:06

do. I. Do for

13:09

sure you know we. Have

13:11

a lot of communication with the

13:13

teams. You.

13:15

Know certainly at last year with

13:17

with Sailing Carter. And.

13:20

We. Were very involved in the

13:22

discussions with the Eagles. Leading.

13:25

Up to them drafting him and.

13:27

Working. Through lot of the legal

13:29

issues and concerns that. Eagle

13:33

Sad. Which.

13:35

They seem of of we we were ugly

13:37

involved. And talk and all the teams.

13:40

Certainly. Would never take any

13:42

credit for. A. Client getting

13:44

drafted. That's based on

13:47

our clients ability. And

13:49

are hard work. And their talents

13:51

it. but we definitely are very

13:54

involved in the process setting up

13:56

these. different interviews

13:58

and meetings and interaction

14:00

with the coaches and the general

14:03

managers and listen leading

14:05

up to the draft had a lot of conversations with

14:07

teams about who was interested in

14:09

JC where I thought he was gonna go

14:11

and there's a lot of cat-mouse

14:15

you know at the end of the day I don't I don't

14:17

want to minimize what an agent's role

14:19

is because if you work at it you can help

14:21

your clients. So

14:24

since you're in on it on the NIL side

14:26

you probably are as good as anyone to talk

14:28

about this a lot of talk about

14:30

not as many guys leaving school early you

14:32

know a lot of guys have that COVID

14:35

year. Can you just talk from

14:37

your perspective Drew about how true that

14:39

is that maybe late round

14:41

guys or undrafted guys are

14:44

staying in school because you know

14:46

that they know they got something guaranteed that's

14:48

pretty decent with the NIL stuff? Yeah

14:52

I'm fine I think that's a good

14:54

component of NIL. I think it's

14:56

great that that fewer guys come

14:59

out early I think it's it's good

15:02

for players that are not going

15:04

to be a high pick to work on

15:06

their craft and develop their skills for

15:08

life after football make the most

15:10

of college and higher

15:13

education. Development

15:15

and seasoning and maturation if

15:18

they're not going to be a high pick is a good thing

15:20

it's a really tough sport it's

15:23

a tough transition from college to the NFL

15:25

so I think it's outstanding that more

15:28

guys are staying in school to

15:30

maximize their ability now you're gonna

15:33

be drafted early you know

15:35

to me it's a no-brainer you got to go

15:37

get that guaranteed money and NIL

15:39

will never compete with the NFL money

15:42

except for a handful of superstar

15:45

quarterbacks at the

15:47

end of the day NIL is a

15:49

wonderful thing for the players because

15:51

it puts money in their pocket that

15:54

they haven't had the opportunity to earn we

15:57

just think we need

15:59

some more The rules I think

16:01

it would be. Great. For

16:03

the sport. Of. College Football.

16:06

To. Have. A

16:08

level playing field where every

16:10

college. And has displaced

16:13

by the same rules. Ah

16:16

think it'll be good. For parity in. You

16:19

won't have super teams. That.

16:21

You sadly deepak it's getting all the good

16:23

players added. The. For. And I'll

16:26

reasons to the collective sigh a thing

16:28

of be amazing. And I

16:30

was incredible. But. It be nice substructure.

16:32

You know in the Nfl we've got structure. We

16:34

have. For. Rings and see. After four

16:36

years we have a draft. It's waited. Based.

16:38

On win loss record we

16:40

have a salary cap. We

16:43

have a waiver system. In

16:45

the Nfl know that exists in college. Right now

16:48

it's an Astro free for all. Something.

16:50

That's great. For anybody, sorry for the players,

16:52

not great for the coaches and most of

16:54

all not great for the fans. So I'm

16:56

hoping that we can develop. Rules

16:59

and Structure. That. Will

17:01

enable and I yelled a

17:03

be fantastic. You.

17:06

Don't want to finish up Drew where I started.

17:08

Which. Is you talking about going from

17:10

client decline If the client. I'm.

17:13

Thirty Three Days. Drama. That's

17:15

gotta be for me. Because.

17:17

Party. Look I know there's a lot of.

17:20

Ah, negative and headaches a big aged

17:22

trust me. But. Those.

17:24

Videos! Ah they get me every

17:27

year man because it is like

17:29

immediately transformers me back. To.

17:31

When the Redskins called a i'm in

17:33

my dorm room two thousand want like

17:36

it's just. Aren't you know

17:38

how important? added to that person whole family Because

17:40

I was thinking you know power ups are you

17:42

doing it because it's the right thing to do

17:44

for agent as age to be there for your

17:47

reply but also. Why? The best

17:49

party your job Romita The before your job

17:51

Like being there with the family when their

17:53

dream comes true. A being in the room

17:55

and in the place where it happens. You

17:57

know. It's it's not.

18:00

The ideal it is. it sounds

18:02

because. The. Process of waiting for

18:04

you get the phone call. Is

18:06

absolutely pressure cooker. And there's

18:08

a couple hundred people looking at you and like.

18:11

A True how can we ended Take their. Suffer.

18:14

Why did the safety go ahead of? Why?

18:17

Did why did tyler new been go to the

18:19

giants you know and instead of to buy not

18:21

Game Time a day. Last minute

20:49

tickets and here's the key. Lowest

20:52

price guaranteed. Sucks

20:54

sakes. All

20:57

right, Ross. My favorite, uniform news. Running back

20:59

Zico Elliott will actually wear number 15 with

21:02

the Cowboys this time around. Your

21:05

thoughts on that, Jack? Because everybody has a 21

21:07

jersey. I mean, maybe

21:09

just because it was his college number and he wore

21:11

it last year, or maybe this is

21:13

Zeke thinking, you know what, I'll make

21:15

some more money. I'll have people have to buy a

21:18

different number jersey. Your thoughts? So

21:20

I'd assume this was, obviously when he was

21:22

in Dallas the first, they

21:24

didn't have the uniform change. So without running backs to

21:26

wear numbers in the teens and single digits. So I

21:29

think he always wanted to wear 15, but

21:31

he couldn't because of the league rules. And now this is

21:33

an opportunity he has. So that's why I think he did

21:35

it personally. Oh, that's a good

21:37

point, Jack. That's probably why it is. That's a really

21:39

good point. See, that's why you're here.

21:41

You provide value sometimes. I actually have a

21:43

take on this. I'm gonna make it

21:45

my Labat take of the week, presented by Labat Blue

21:48

Light, the pristine Canadian Pilsner.

21:50

Enjoy your beers together so you can live life

21:53

to the power of we. Always

21:55

enjoy responsibly beer, Labat

21:58

USA, Buffalo, New York. I

22:01

have a couple friends that are

22:03

Cowboys fans. This is probably the

22:06

saddest offseason I've

22:08

ever seen them have. I mean the whole

22:10

thing is like George

22:12

Costanza in a Seinfeld

22:15

episode. Well trying to get

22:17

better in the offseason like bringing in Stefan

22:19

Gilmore and Brandon Cooks that hasn't

22:21

gotten us where we wanted to go. So let's

22:23

do the opposite. Let's do nothing

22:25

to try to get better. Let's

22:27

watch Beaudet's leave and Tyron Smith

22:30

leave and Tony Power leave and

22:32

replace them with a couple of

22:34

rookie draft picks who

22:36

may or may not be good players or

22:39

bring back Zeke Elliott. It's

22:41

sad. It's a sad offseason for

22:43

the Cowboys where the owner says

22:45

they're all in and then their

22:47

actions say they're all out. Maybe

22:50

it'll work for me. Maybe it'll be like that Seinfeld episode. I

22:52

guess we'll see. And

22:55

then Ross do you have any thoughts on Roger

22:57

Goodell's comments to Pat McAfee regarding the 18 game

22:59

season? Not

23:01

a surprise. I guess what is a surprise

23:04

is that it sounds like they're going to try to get

23:06

this done before the

23:08

CBA expires at the end

23:10

of the decade. That's I mean he brought it up

23:12

for a reason. He's kind

23:14

of setting the table

23:17

for negotiations while they're

23:19

still under a CBA

23:21

which I would say if that's the case NFLPA

23:24

really needs to try to get

23:26

a lot. Like if they're trying

23:29

to change the CBA in

23:31

the middle of it NFLPA

23:33

needs to go out of their way to

23:36

make sure that they really make it worth

23:38

their while as opposed to like if the

23:42

agreements expired and there could be a

23:44

lockout or whatever. So

23:46

speaking of surprises Ross I'm hijacking the end

23:48

of the show. I have scoured the deep

23:50

depths of the Internet and I have stumbled

23:53

upon. I'll unbox

23:55

it live for you. Ross

24:00

Tucker Cowboys Jersey not

24:02

just any Ross Tucker Cowboys Jersey

24:04

a Signed wrong where you can

24:07

see a signed Ross Tucker Cowboy Jersey I don't know

24:09

what I'm gonna do with this, but I saw is

24:11

the only one I could find I had to get

24:13

it your thoughts Number

24:17

one how much money did you spend

24:19

on that? We'll talk finances on

24:21

the show. That's a it's a proprietary

24:23

comment Don't worry about it. Okay. Okay.

24:25

I was gonna say number two Was

24:27

that your own money or did you use

24:30

the RT media credit card? I

24:33

know you don't allow I don't think you

24:35

would allow me to indulge in my own

24:37

collections on company dime So this was a

24:39

personal expenditure might be a business that because

24:41

I use it. What's so funny. I Just

24:44

happened to look for some no, you know

24:46

what? one of

24:49

my friends Jack their daughter

24:51

is doing a a

24:54

book report or something or a presentation

24:57

on famous Pennsylvanians and

25:00

they wanted to do me which

25:02

I think is hilarious because they know me

25:05

so they were gonna buy that They

25:07

saw that online. They were gonna buy it. I was

25:09

like, no don't do that I

25:12

got like a little one that she can wear

25:14

it's a it's a girl I got a little

25:16

one that she can wear to school you guys

25:18

don't have to pay for it So I actually

25:20

saw that that was being sold. I'm always like

25:22

amazed Who did I give

25:24

that to at some point that they're actually

25:26

selling it? It kind of makes me sad,

25:29

but I guess I understand it. Maybe they

25:31

grew out of it. Whatever that is epic

25:33

That was a good surprise. I was very

25:35

concerned Jack, but that was good. Well done.

25:37

I think we're I

25:39
