0:11

Guiding your gridiron journey, none other than

0:13

your host, former NFL lineman Ross Tucker.

0:17

Oh, yeah it is. But

0:19

it's not just any Ross

0:21

Tucker football podcast. I never

0:23

do it. I bring

0:25

you the energy 25 minutes every single

0:27

day here. On

0:30

the RT media podcast network. If you

0:32

haven't already checked out the college

0:35

draft or even money or

0:37

the fantasy feast podcast this week, you absolutely

0:39

should. And you'll have plenty of time to

0:41

do so over the next

0:43

three days before we are back bright

0:45

and early on Monday

0:48

morning. How about today's guest?

0:51

Long time NFL safety. He

0:54

still starts for the New Orleans Saints. He's

0:56

been a pro bowler. He's been all pro.

0:59

He's won a Superbowl. I

1:01

am hoping if we have

1:03

time at the end to get to some winners,

1:05

those of you that have spread the word via

1:07

social media or given us

1:09

a YouTube comment or even

1:11

gone ahead and taken advantage of one of the

1:14

sponsors. But first it's Tyron Matthew. It's

1:16

big show time. Really

1:21

been looking forward to this one. Had a chance

1:23

to talk with him a couple of different times

1:25

out at the NFL's broadcasting

1:28

workshop, going into year 11, which

1:31

honestly just makes me feel really old. I remember

1:34

watching him in college and then the draft and

1:36

all that just makes me even

1:38

feel like more of a has been. He's

1:40

Tyron Matthew, year 11 back in

1:43

his hometown with the New Orleans Saints. Tyron,

1:45

thanks so much for coming on the show,

1:47

man. Really appreciate it. Ross, how

1:49

you doing, man? Nice, it's cool to be

1:51

here with you. Wish I was doing as good as

1:53

you, man. Year 11 back in

1:55

your hometown, you've made a bunch of dough,

1:57

you've won a Super Bowl. I mean. Yeah

2:00

because they are pretty good man. Man.

2:03

I'd say what they are other, are you

2:05

happy they do with it you or me?

2:07

ah still remember. You. Know enough. First

2:09

got drafted to the Cardinals Man and

2:11

his locker. new locker room will eyeglasses

2:13

don't attach Adidas and right of this

2:15

like I'm starstruck. So it's like you

2:17

know to be able to still be

2:19

around Man in has been a blessing

2:21

monsieur. You. Know it's

2:23

funny that you mention that because I

2:25

wanted to start their exams. The draft

2:27

was one couple weeks ago now at

2:29

this point and. I. Remembered Tyrant

2:32

you have in Like you know

2:34

they're being concerns about you when

2:36

you were coming out in the

2:38

draft. I remember you're missing a

2:40

whole see I. I. I forgot

2:42

about that. So. Before we get

2:44

to the drive through, I think it's interesting the

2:46

fact that. Your. Your what you

2:49

are now right? Hour long time successful

2:51

vet. Go near eleven after being a

2:53

guy with quote unquote red flags com

2:55

an hour. But. Starwood. That

2:58

I mean you Love football?

3:00

You're. Awesome at it. You. Know

3:02

that season you had cows was

3:04

ridiculous. What? Was that you're

3:07

like. When. You were playing at Ikea?

3:09

Me I guess it's kind of like it injury but

3:11

what? What was that? Man.

3:13

It was tough or tell you what

3:15

a man I still remember. I'm

3:18

going to the first game that year

3:20

on that I was suspended right? and

3:22

I'm a big whoop plan against Washington

3:25

the Huskies and I remember sitting in

3:27

the stands because I couldn't be a

3:29

part of the party at that point

3:32

and manager still ourselves so out of

3:34

place. man you got me and I'm

3:36

actually a couple months later. I ended

3:38

up getting arrested on campus and it

3:41

was really that experience a rude as

3:43

is awaiting that kind of. You.

3:45

Know got me to redirect myself a your

3:48

I'm I'm a call impact of Peterson on

3:50

and is as to him like man I

3:52

weeping us to do as he was like

3:54

mesa go to Florida trail my bet it

3:56

does give ready to put it in fill

3:58

in you know meet me not knowing anything

4:01

undertook pet were for a man and or

4:03

to be honest I'm proud of the best

4:05

thing I did. You

4:07

know, get away from Louisiana or get

4:09

around pet pet peeves. His father who

4:12

are you know is all about routine,

4:14

a structure and discipline and a at

4:16

that time is exactly what I needed.

4:19

Okay, sounds good as get because.

4:22

I've. Had Scout say to me before.

4:24

Multiple. Scouts that. One

4:27

a guy's a quote on quote red

4:29

flag guy. That. It

4:32

always. it always comebacks, comes back

4:34

to haunt right. Like it always

4:36

comes back. maybe my bigger for

4:38

a few years. but then when

4:40

I get the second contract or

4:42

whatever whatever quote unquote issues they

4:44

had. They. Always come to roost.

4:47

I don't wanna jinx. You may amount

4:49

to get hurt. I mean you go

4:51

to New Year Eleven and it's It's

4:53

never happened that I feel like that's

4:55

pretty rare. For. A guy to have

4:58

you know the issues read. And and

5:00

is all year and all that stuff. Like.

5:02

Committee Now when I talk with you or

5:04

anybody talks to you, you just sliding. As

5:07

paused and professional. As

5:10

anyone was, was it the suspension?

5:12

Was it? the arrest was gone

5:14

with Patrick's dad and you been

5:16

good ever since. Or was a

5:18

competition? All three of those things.

5:20

What? What gotta us? snaps real?

5:23

Math. Me a day in a big

5:25

Fisa that it is football right? and I

5:28

thank you know not been able to play

5:30

football for a year Marriage is it just

5:32

made me want to commit. So.

5:34

Much more to the gay you know I

5:36

was like meh what I do much as

5:38

again like a muscle everybody that I'm a

5:41

good teammate that Aca still you know make

5:43

plays and on what are what I really

5:45

like to remind people is that. It.

5:47

Wasn't really a bad here is you know

5:50

before before before the Elysee incident you really

5:52

steer anything negative. People are really have anything

5:54

negative to say about me. Out was never

5:57

really late for meetings. I was always on

5:59

the time. The great teammate in I

6:01

was good coaches you know am a day

6:03

for Nema people to Canada added you know

6:05

mister school in the in a setback you

6:08

updated I was like rotten around Guns are

6:10

put my hand on women in like not

6:12

in have those type of character issues you

6:14

know home for me man it was much

6:17

deeper in on a therapy on a personal

6:19

level baby that I had a you know

6:21

unpack and n N N and address because.

6:24

Over the course of my life always find myself.

6:27

Self. Inflicted myself you know like China below.

6:29

put a roll back in front of myself

6:31

and on may not be my was us

6:33

that door and that you know life of

6:35

my good man. I try to be honest

6:37

and open with with friends and mentors right?

6:39

Because you know they don't know what you're

6:41

going through a space you in there they

6:43

don't They don't know what to tell you

6:45

you know So I try to keep that

6:47

up front and a menace been a blessing

6:49

to law that allowed a great people. You.

6:51

Know to kind of help help me a walking me

6:53

on his dirty. So. It's

6:56

it's easier. I just saw

6:58

recently on Brady's are Instagram.

7:00

Where. He was talking about how. Does.

7:03

Use all kinds different therapy.

7:05

Throughout. His career and life for

7:08

different reasons. And. Is a

7:10

huge proponents supporter? Ah, that's on the net

7:12

you still used or that you've used during

7:15

your career as you kind of at a

7:17

good point. Where. You don't need that.

7:19

I'm Arab noble guys do now as

7:21

active players attached to something that guy's

7:24

incorporate into their and or weekly routine

7:26

or what. Yeah, so I mean

7:28

I've been doing it. In a relief

7:30

as I've gotten gotten into the alley and

7:32

and are always gonna buy was the always

7:35

wet on you know I kind of ran

7:37

into my issue that ls you. You know

7:39

that one on one thousand and one on

7:41

one therapy I began to do that. I've

7:43

been doing that for. your close

7:46

to twelve thirteen years now you

7:48

have a me and i'm soap

7:50

but as i've gotten into the

7:52

league you realize you know yoga

7:54

you know as former medicine right

7:56

like practice in mindful meditation you

7:58

know and so i actually When

8:00

I was in Arizona, I met this guy named

8:02

Donnie Starkin. He was like

8:05

my yoga coach and he kind of

8:07

grew into that mindful meditating space, right?

8:09

And so me and him have been

8:11

rocking for a long

8:13

time now. But yeah, it's people like

8:15

that, man, that come into your life

8:17

and they try to help elevate you

8:19

and push you forward. I

8:22

can't remember if you did a TV show

8:24

or something, but I just

8:26

remember it's almost like

8:28

you were at a party and

8:31

the Arizona Cardinals called you and

8:33

they were like, listen, or maybe they

8:35

called your agent and they're like, listen, we're

8:38

going to draft you, but I

8:40

do X, Y, and Z. I can't remember exactly what

8:42

it was. And Patrick was there,

8:44

right? So he probably vouched

8:46

for you. I guess I wonder what would

8:49

have happened if Patrick wasn't there and Patrick

8:51

didn't vouch for you. Right,

8:53

and it's crazy. I still remember getting that call,

8:55

right? And the first thing Michael

8:57

Bitwell told me was, I'm going to draft you, but

9:00

I'm going to drug test you too. That's the first

9:02

thing you said? Yeah,

9:06

first thing he said. And he wanted me to

9:08

commit to that, right? And like

9:10

I said, man, at that point, man, I had

9:12

went so long without football and I had some

9:15

real life experiences happen to me and kind

9:17

of helped shape me, not being able to

9:19

play, get kicked off the team and then

9:21

getting arrested. So I

9:23

felt like I was in a good space.

9:25

But to your question, man, I think if

9:27

Patrick Peterson wasn't there, Bruce

9:30

Arias was a really, really strong advocate

9:32

for me. His wife

9:34

does a lot of work with

9:37

inner city kids. And I

9:39

think that they feel like they could really connect

9:41

with people like me. And

9:44

so, man, that was a blessing too, to have a head

9:46

coach like that, you know what I mean? To

9:50

keep it personal, fun, exciting, you know

9:52

what I mean? Challenge

9:54

you. Man, he was everything I needed as a coach

9:56

and much more when I first came into the league.

10:00

You know, his

10:02

foundation is awesome. I have a buddy that

10:04

works with it, and actually Bruce is from

10:06

like 30 minutes that

10:08

way down the road. So I'm

10:10

pretty familiar here in central Pennsylvania

10:13

with Bruce. All right, so the last thing in terms

10:15

of, you know, we talked about the draft,

10:17

you got the rookies, the whole deal. What

10:21

would be your advice to rookies? And

10:23

maybe in particular, rookies that are coming

10:25

out with a situation somewhat similar to

10:27

yours? Yeah, man, my

10:30

advice is simple, man. Like keep

10:32

the main thing the main thing, you know. Try

10:35

to maximize, you know, these

10:37

first few years in the NFL. You

10:40

know, try to learn as much as you can. You

10:43

know, try to create and

10:45

develop strong habits, positive habits.

10:48

And then find those, find those vets. Man, I tell

10:51

kids all the time, they ask me because they want

10:53

to know like a secret sauce, and I don't really

10:55

have it, right? It's just that, man, I felt so

10:57

fortunate, right? And then you see some kids come in

10:59

the league and you're like, man, they don't have any

11:01

leaders around them. You could just see it coming, right?

11:04

And, but man, I was so blessed because when I

11:06

walked in the locker room, man, like I said,

11:08

this is Larris Fitzgerald, Patrick Peterson, Kaleidus

11:11

Campbell, you know, Jay Fairley, you know

11:13

what I mean? So it's like these

11:15

are guys that have played in the

11:17

league a really, really long time and

11:19

not just played well on the field.

11:21

Like these guys, they represent, you know,

11:23

success off of it, too, you know,

11:25

with their foundations and, you know, different

11:28

business endeavors. So, man, that's, those are

11:30

the guys that I was so

11:32

reluctant to be around, you know, because now

11:34

I feel like one of those guys now,

11:36

right? And so I knew that I was

11:38

following the right people. And I think that's

11:40

so important, you know, in this game, man,

11:43

following the right people and because you

11:45

want to be able to maximize it,

11:48

right? Like, you know, like we

11:50

were just talking about, man, you know, I was at

11:52

the, at the media workshop, right? Like, so, I mean,

11:54

you can play 10 years, you can play five years,

11:56

you can play two years, right? But you can still

11:58

be a part of this. game, you know, one

12:01

way or another, right? And so, but you have to

12:03

put yourself in position, you know, to be

12:05

able to do that. And I think, you know, step

12:07

one is like following the right people, man. The guys

12:09

that's going to tell you the truth and, you

12:12

know, really, really hold you responsible and accountable,

12:14

you know, for just being a pro. So

12:18

I mentioned earlier, you're going to year 11 and

12:21

the success you've had with the pro bowls

12:23

and the awards and you've gotten a bunch

12:25

of good contracts. You've won a Super

12:28

Bowl. When you wake up

12:30

now, every morning, right? What's the

12:32

biggest motivator now to

12:34

keep, you know, your five, nine, however much

12:36

your way to keep playing, to keep this

12:39

thing going? Is it just, you

12:41

know, have the longest career is just playing until

12:43

the wheels fall off, is it try to win

12:45

another one? Is it just have the

12:47

best career possible, make some more money? Like what's

12:50

the biggest motivator for you at this point? Man,

12:52

for me, man, I hope that I, you know,

12:55

really could just be the kind of instrument

12:58

to others that people were to meet, you

13:01

know, and man, if I can

13:03

continue to inspire guys to, you know,

13:05

you know, want to sign a big

13:07

contract to, you know, want to go

13:09

back home and represent their team. I just feel like I'm

13:12

in such a position, man. And I represent,

13:14

you know, so many of us, you know,

13:17

football players, right? And so, but

13:19

yeah, man, I want to see everybody around

13:21

me do well. You know, I love seeing

13:23

a guy come in like shift around six

13:25

rounder, right? Like, and he makes a Pro

13:27

Bowl, they get paid, right? Like, people know

13:29

his name now, you know, and, you

13:32

know, I like on the opposite. And I

13:34

like, I like kids that come in, right? And

13:36

then like their knucklehead, right? Like, like they're late

13:38

to meetings, right? Like, and you know, you get

13:40

on, right? And then you can see that growth

13:42

as a year in, right? Like, so for me,

13:44

man, like that's what it's all about. That's

13:48

awesome. Um, what, tell

13:50

me that the pros and cons of

13:53

playing back in your hometown. Cause

13:55

it's funny. I always, you know, I'm from outside of Philly. I

13:57

always wanted to play for the Eagles and that would have been

13:59

awesome. except number one,

14:01

all the tickets and stuff, but also, like I

14:04

thought about like, what if I gave up a

14:06

sack to lose the Super Bowl? Like, I would

14:08

never be able to go back to my hometown,

14:10

you know what I mean? Like, so what are

14:12

the pros and cons? Man,

14:14

it was rough. I'll tell you a quick story, man.

14:18

You know, we was playing the Bengals not last season,

14:20

a year before. And, you know, it was when Jamar

14:22

Chase broke like two tackles. He had

14:24

to walk off, you know, touchdown on me,

14:26

basically. And, man, that's all I was thinking

14:28

about, man. I said, man, I can't go

14:30

outside no more, you know, ever again. You

14:32

know what I mean? But, man,

14:34

I love it, to be honest, man. I

14:36

think the pros is, man, you get to

14:38

be around family, right? Like, and family is

14:40

so important, man. Good friends, like all that

14:42

is so important. And just

14:44

having that support, man, and having that energy

14:47

around you, you know? And

14:50

I'll probably say the cons is, just

14:52

what you said, man. I mean, I only could

14:54

get so many tickets. And then after a while,

14:56

it's like, yo, why am I spending $30,000 a

14:58

ticket? You know

15:00

what I mean? So I'm like, that's

15:02

definitely like the worst part about it.

15:05

And the family section after the game,

15:07

right? As you know, they only give

15:09

you a certain number of bans. So

15:12

everybody can't bring all their family down, you know,

15:14

after the game. So it's like, now I got

15:16

family members fighting each other. Everybody trying to get

15:18

on the field. They think Lou Brie's still down

15:20

there. I said Lou Brie's don't play for us

15:23

anymore, man. In

15:25

that down there. That

15:30

is funny, man. Yeah,

15:33

that's it

15:35

varies from team to team for sure. But

15:37

that's funny. I can remember. I

15:40

remember the first game I dressed for as

15:42

a rookie was at Philly

15:45

for the Redskins. And

15:47

I said to my family, I'm like, do

15:49

not even think about wearing any Redskins clothing.

15:51

And they know because they're from. And I'm

15:53

like, I know you're rooting for me. Don't

15:55

put your like, do not do that. Like,

15:57

we know what it's like. You do not want to be.

16:00

that person, it's not

16:02

worth it. I

16:04

guess the last one I have for your last

16:06

one or two, Saints this

16:09

season, you know, obviously, you know, you

16:11

just had the draft. I love the O-TAC,

16:13

what you got from Oregon State. I did

16:15

an Oregon State game last year against San

16:17

Jose State. He gets

16:19

after people. I think you'll like him. What

16:21

are you thinking about this year? Feels like

16:24

your division is still kind

16:26

of wide open again this year. Yeah,

16:28

man, you know, I think our motto this

16:30

year, man, is just to just keep our

16:32

head down and work. You

16:34

know, like don't even cater or give into

16:36

expectations if there are any, you know what

16:39

I mean? I think the last

16:41

two years, man, we finished in 9-8 last year.

16:44

Wasn't good enough. And then a year before, we were

16:46

7-9. So it's like,

16:49

man, like, we don't even need

16:51

anybody to talk about us. We just need to work

16:53

hard. We have the players, and,

16:55

man, like, you know Ross, man, like 7-9,

16:57

9-8, like, man, all

16:59

you need to do is steal two or three games,

17:02

you know? Like, and you probably had them, you know,

17:04

just drop the ball late, right? Like, so, man,

17:06

like, we could just do that and put ourselves in

17:08

a position, man, to really win 10,

17:10

11 games. You

17:13

know, I think that would be good enough, you know what

17:15

I mean, to be able to win our division. And so,

17:18

yeah, man, we just need to work hard. I think we

17:20

have the players. You know, I'm

17:22

excited about the offense. You know, I think all those

17:24

boards are excited over there. They get

17:27

cool, be acting, you know, over from the San

17:29

Fran. So, you know, all those motions and adjustments.

17:31

I know how hard it is to cover it

17:33

as a defensive man. So it's like, I get

17:35

it, you know, I know why they're excited, right,

17:37

like, they're just going to have a ball in

17:39

space. So, yeah, man, like,

17:41

if we could play well on that side of the

17:43

ball and then defensively, man, if we could just continue

17:45

to take the ball away and do what we do,

17:48

you know, I think we'll give ourselves a

17:50

good shot, man. Last

17:53

question, because I was

17:55

talking about this with a lot of people as it

17:57

relates to the draft. So you're only 5'9". Right.

18:00

So that's not a strength of yours.

18:02

Even going back to LSU though, the

18:05

ball like finds you right. It's

18:07

unbelievable. And so I think, especially

18:10

at off the ball backer, inside

18:12

backer and safety, that

18:14

that is like critically. Some guys just

18:16

see it, you know, it's like you

18:18

watch basketball players, hockey guys, when they're

18:21

Caitlin Clark, like when she's passing, like

18:23

they just see it, right? How

18:25

much of that like can

18:27

a guy improve and how much of

18:30

man, that's just kind of the way I've always been. Cause

18:32

it was very clear for you

18:35

college NFL, you just

18:37

see things before they happen.

18:40

Did you do anything for that to happen or was

18:42

that just a blessing you got from God? I

18:45

think a little bit of both, you know,

18:48

and I was always one of those

18:50

defenders with really every system I played

18:52

in, you know, I really wanted to

18:54

know like what the weaknesses

18:56

were, right? Like, and like,

18:58

so I know what to expect, you

19:00

know? And so, you know, for me,

19:02

that has always been like, you know,

19:04

really, really, you know, important to me.

19:07

I think the more you watch film

19:09

and then the more you play to practice,

19:12

you know, I think that's definitely a skill that you

19:14

can develop or you can at least heighten it, you

19:17

know? So, and I encourage it, you

19:19

know, I encourage guys to like

19:23

understand what the office is doing, but

19:25

like know where your guys are at,

19:27

right? Like, and so you can anticipate where you

19:29

think the ball is going, right? Or what you

19:31

think is running back when, what hole he's going

19:33

to cut through. And I think the guys that

19:35

anticipated, you know, obviously they played, you

19:38

know, at a higher level, but I do think it's

19:40

something that, you know, can really grow on you. And,

19:42

you know, like I said, man, it's all

19:44

about surrounding yourself on the right people, you

19:46

know? Cause before I got to the NFL

19:49

in college, right? It was, it was mostly

19:51

like reading react. And

19:53

then I got to the Cardinals and then we

19:55

had this guy named Rashad Johnson, who was like

19:57

a two-time champion with Nick Saban. he

20:00

never like stopped communicating. And I was like,

20:02

oh, that's how you play safety, right? But

20:04

he wasn't a guy that was fast or

20:06

like, he didn't have

20:08

any like, you know, he didn't have Patrick

20:10

Peterson, you know, skillset, but

20:13

he was always around the football. And

20:15

so I knew at that point, like, it

20:17

does take some mental processing. Like you have

20:19

to get that part too, especially at this

20:22

level. Tyron,

20:24

where can people follow you on social media or

20:26

22:57

think we talked about this we hit

23:00

on it on the fantasy feast podcast

23:02

with Joe Dolan yesterday going over some

23:05

of the receivers that were drafted but This

23:12

back-to-back incidents for rice and I've seen some

23:14

stuff going on around the internet Evidently,

23:17

23:19

concerns about rice Coming

23:21

out of SMU and and now, you

23:26

23:28

we've got some what they

23:30

would call knucklehead activity The

23:33

NFL schedule is set to be released Wednesday next

23:35

week the 15th Usually

23:38

it would be tonight last year.

23:40

It was tonight, you know the second Thursday,

23:42

I guess in May instead

23:44

It's next Wednesday. I think

23:46

probably the Christmas thing threw a couple

23:49

wrenches in it But that's obviously always

23:51

a very big day We kind of

23:53

previewed it on the

23:55

even money podcast on

23:57

Tuesday, even if you're not into betting Just

24:00

how betters look at the schedule release

24:02

is very, very interesting. Got

24:05

some signings. Browns, they signed center Brian Allen,

24:07

Panthers, they signed running back Rashad Penny and

24:09

the Raiders signed offensive lineman Andrews Pete. Right.

24:12

So they're just still looking at their roster. Where

24:15

do we still need depth? Where do we

24:17

still need competition? Where did we not

24:19

get somebody in the draft that we thought we might?

24:23

And CFL MVP Chad Kelly has been

24:25

suspended nine games by the league for

24:27

violating their gender based violence policy. Obviously

24:31

a very talented young man, but also

24:33

a very troubled young man. I mean,

24:35

this goes back to like high

24:38

school, college, NFL,

24:43

CFL. He just has

24:46

some issues and has never really quite

24:48

been able to get it right. Spread
