This is a Global Player

0:04

original podcast. Hello

0:09

there. Welcome to another episode of Runpod.

0:11

I'm Jenny Faulkner. And do you know

0:14

what? I just love hearing from you,

0:16

the Runpod Run Club. On

0:18

my Instagram, I often get messages from

0:20

listeners or members of the Runpod Run

0:22

Club who are listening whilst training for

0:24

a race, maybe listening whilst on a

0:27

long training run on a Sunday, or

0:29

listening to find the motivation to get

0:31

up and get out there. Well, if

0:33

ever you needed motivation, then this is

0:35

the episode for you. Let me tell

0:37

you, because today's guest, well, will

0:39

make you realize that you've got it

0:42

easy. And that is the simplest way

0:44

of putting it. Please welcome to Runpod

0:46

Daniel Fairbrother and Tallulah. Hi, thank

0:48

you for having us. Oh, thank you so

0:50

much. Thank you so much for coming in.

0:52

I mean, look, Tallulah running everything aside. It's

0:54

very nice to meet you because we've been

0:56

speaking through social media. I have, yes. And

0:58

I've been going, Daniel, will you come on

1:00

Runpod? And you said yes, which

1:02

was amazing. Oh, I bit your hand off,

1:04

you know, it's just an amazing opportunity. Thank you

1:06

for having me here. A podcast is something I've

1:09

always wanted to do. And, you

1:11

know, tie that in with running. I'm always down

1:13

for that. Have you been a runner for a long time? So

1:15

I sort of dabbled with it when I was 16

1:17

for a little bit, but it sort of never really

1:19

went anywhere. My friends used to take the mic at

1:22

me when they saw me running around my local village.

1:24

They'd try and chase me, that sort of thing. And

1:26

I just sort of fell away from it really. And

1:28

then I picked it back up two and a half

1:30

years ago. And I've sort of gone from not being

1:32

a runner to signing up to a half marathon, which

1:34

was a Cambridge half marathon, to doing another half marathon,

1:37

and then just sort of leapfrogged everything and went into

1:39

ultras. So running is your thing. That's it. It is

1:41

at the moment. Yeah. Can I ask you just for

1:43

anyone who's listening, and by the way, hello to

1:45

you, if you're out running or thinking about going out

1:47

running, I guarantee by the end of this episode, you'll

1:50

be like, OK, I have no reason not to go

1:52

running now. Can I ask where you come from? What

1:54

you do? Yeah, so come

1:56

from Steven Edge, originally from Cambridge. So

1:58

coming to London. The and very

2:00

strange to me I'm used to their

2:02

country side rose not a big though

2:04

up rose everyone not know my they

2:07

can be insights yep and a living

2:09

in Stevenage now and currently I work

2:11

for hims company specializing in English openings

2:13

do sites are sit behind a desk

2:15

my so the day which is quite

2:17

infuriatingly answer as a potentially nine ten

2:19

hours a day and or determined that

2:21

I thinking about running Renaissance Eraser us

2:23

and. Will. You're making out for it now has

2:25

I love the sad that he have gone

2:27

from being lost in as years pretty much

2:30

and eat gone from just starting out tonight

2:32

and ultras as well. Yeah and what? Ceasar

2:34

The Seafront. Last year I did the

2:36

Cotswolds Way which is one hundred kilometers lamb

2:38

and it was real I I I can.

2:40

I did a fifty kilometer before that and

2:43

Eight Pro did not one. In the end

2:45

of June it was like twenty something degrees.

2:47

It was really hot day, I was massively

2:49

I'm under pad. I thought I was Rothys

2:52

dividing up hills. but you go to the

2:54

Cotswolds even that, what? who is. And yeah

2:56

I was really interesting. Down started at half

2:59

past seven and morning and I finished up

3:01

just before course past midnight to simulate sick.

3:03

Wow. Forty five. I. Think I came twenty

3:05

eight thousand two hundred ninety six people so it's

3:07

pretty proud that but I am very hard on

3:10

myself when I started I passed my girlfriend and

3:12

I said old of seem and twelve hours sixteen

3:14

and a half hours later I thought can feel

3:16

it's a very. Well the things is the

3:19

here's the thing. so everything Daniel same

3:21

here. You can pretty much realize that

3:23

he's he's committees dedicated, pretty hard core

3:25

and will run for a long time.

3:27

Will escalate. You don't give up Yes.

3:30

So everyone's different within their running some

3:32

me personally on not fast runner. I

3:34

don't like doing five case tang case

3:36

and trying to beat T basis of

3:39

Maize on very much. Slow, methodical and

3:41

just slug it out. read aloud: robbed

3:43

of one hundred kilometers and ten kilometers.

3:45

but yeah I don't know whether consumers

3:48

it's just a determination within me. I

3:50

changed my mentality critical of that myself

3:52

from for hang on. This people out

3:54

there who like Nick bust us who

3:57

are doing these amazing things I want

3:59

to one. So nice when around one

4:01

outta why can't I do that and know

4:03

how assorted that's where I am an okay.

4:05

So. Now I need to and explain

4:07

to anyone they listening exactly why you're

4:10

here city with us. Hulu law and

4:12

hulu less is saying Have been very

4:14

quiet and very well behaved And can

4:16

you tell as a boat to Lula

4:18

apply to Lula is here because this

4:21

is on site. Listen to this assets.

4:23

So A all stars Really like any good story

4:25

after. Don't deny out my best friend Sam is

4:27

type one diabetic and we went for a few

4:30

beers will not as a bit of a catch

4:32

up on the next morning miles of it was

4:34

west is was cornered man said look and eight

4:36

pro diabetes you tied to any challenge where you

4:39

run hundred kilometers in a month and you try

4:41

my money I would you do it I said

4:43

of course of love to try my some money

4:45

for diabetes you take on I was close to

4:48

some sauce have known Samhsa. Fifteen years

4:50

and he's the first person I probably know

4:52

whose death diabetic and it was a real

4:54

eye opener see how it affects him on

4:56

a day to day basis. The trouble was

4:58

sync with that challenge was a few months

5:00

later I'm one hundred comments are also saw

5:02

a sign people up on going around one

5:04

hundred comments as a month is Monday and

5:06

people were didn't get behind. I got one

5:08

donation of thirty pounds which was from his

5:10

wife and I was really angry and thus

5:12

on sort of pass them when I set

5:14

my mind on some sense Doesn't matter how

5:16

hard it is I'm going to do it

5:19

So I said. Some know I'm really sorry,

5:21

I need to think of something different and

5:23

I'm in a combat bigger and stronger. And

5:25

that's when I saw the landmass and happening

5:27

and I saw the news of a British

5:30

Royal marine writing the world record for fastest

5:32

math and caring for it's and something he

5:34

my her head when I could do that.

5:37

Assist. Nobody does

5:39

that. Nobody lives and goes all I can do

5:41

that. Oh my Goodness. Yes. That. it was just

5:44

like this. Light bulb moment was like that's what

5:46

I've got to do. If I can do

5:48

that, I'll be out to raise lots of

5:50

money for diabetes. you case of is going

5:52

to be tough. But. i just know

5:54

i can do that so i called him off my third

5:56

love this of i'm going to do i'm gonna apply to

5:58

diabetes uk for a position And if I get

6:00

in, I'm going for the world record. Obviously, and

6:03

rightly so, I got the very standard response of,

6:05

you're crazy. But

6:07

I just, for me, running is

6:09

very much 70% mentality and

6:12

actually 30% the physical side

6:14

of your fitness. And I think if you

6:16

can pitch yourself crossing the finish

6:18

line, or you can see yourselves at point

6:20

in that race and how you feel, you're

6:23

actually already 70% of the way

6:25

there. And I just knew that if I've already

6:27

convinced myself to do it in my head, I

6:29

could do it on the day, no problem at all. Let's

6:32

bring in Tallulah. By the way,

6:34

I'm saying that like she's a guest. She's going

6:36

to speak. She has no ability to talk. She

6:38

still has feelings though, but no ability to talk.

6:41

She's very nicely decorated. We actually, it

6:43

was quite interesting because we're

6:45

at the podcast studio, it's obviously the security

6:47

system. And they're like, what's in the fridge?

6:49

And it's all been tied really perfectly. But

6:53

for security, they were desperate to see what

6:55

was in it. And I guess, I

6:57

guess security-wise, it's quite a suspicious thing traveling

6:59

around with a fridge everywhere you go. It is.

7:02

And at the time I didn't know

7:05

it, but there was obviously a running with the police, an

7:07

incident with the police on my second training run. And

7:09

thankfully that's what sort of catapulted me

7:12

into the media and got the spotlight

7:14

on Tallulah, which is then

7:16

obviously passed on to Diabetes UK, which

7:18

has been great. But yeah, I mean,

7:20

like even today, walking through Covent Garden,

7:22

I'm very aware that, I

7:25

mean, you can't get much more of a suspicious package than that. But

7:27

thankfully the people here were amazing about

7:30

us. Yeah, I mean, I helped

7:32

Daniel basically carry Tallulah. I

7:34

didn't even help that much. I just helped a little

7:36

bit. And she's heavy. She is heavy, yeah. How much

7:38

does she weigh? Just shy of 26 kgs, 25.7. So

7:43

one of the stipulations for the world record attempt is it must

7:45

weigh a minimum of 25 kgs. So

7:47

you have to get over that weight, which you've

7:49

done. Obviously there's nothing inside the fridge. You're not

7:51

carrying drinks for people on race day. No, so

7:53

I took out the glass shelf, so that didn't

7:56

obviously smash. And I cut the plug

7:58

off and that's all I've done. Okay, fine. Life

8:00

is just a normal French. oh I

8:02

get less an antiquated to get the

8:04

first. Salaam! So to Lula was facing

8:06

the dump see com friend of a

8:08

life of my girlfriends worst and I

8:11

said no. I have an idea

8:13

of us, so it's quite funny. really. sort

8:15

of taking it from bouts be thrown away

8:17

said possibly one of the most famous for

8:19

his in the well right now center. Disney ones

8:21

after them Hours and what you gonna do? A

8:23

cylinder. There is plans of

8:25

my misery. There are plans cannot the are gone

8:27

down well. But there are plans. Okay sides

8:29

and let's talk about cellular okay suits

8:31

the I decide to run with the

8:33

threads and. Either. I

8:35

mean there must have indications for you're going to

8:38

see me be made a mistake. Missing to

8:40

this yes So one thing I mentioned see outside

8:42

was I didn't as he realized how little spices

8:44

the the terrorist is get so I just assumed

8:46

asked I visited or a massive tar see the

8:49

have lots of spaces so waited and waited and

8:51

I get my response and it says you haven't

8:53

gospel and I was the heart rate them as

8:55

phoning them up and I was like that you

8:58

don't understand I'm going to run with a fridge

9:00

on my back I want to raise money for

9:02

you in a lot We appreciate it but with

9:04

some gospel few. And. He'll hard isn't

9:06

it is. There are limited spaces

9:09

for charity. Is I wouldn't want that job

9:11

to choose who is running for them and who

9:13

is running for the minority. They want to maximize

9:15

how much they race and I completely get that's

9:17

but anyway fossil to December and I got any

9:19

mouse I love someone drops out. you can have

9:21

a reserve spot. So then I bit the hand

9:23

off and I'm in and it was at that

9:25

point the penny dropped like hang on Have talk

9:27

the talk and novel what the will have got

9:29

to get afraid of gonna strap on my back

9:31

and I've got Iran and I remember going out

9:33

for my first run just thinking what is isn't

9:35

it I wanted to rise. This is either gonna

9:37

guy really wow or terrible. and i finished

9:40

the run i did and five miles and

9:42

i remember thinking okay this is gonna be

9:44

hard my legs hurt my back cause i

9:46

haven't got the freight some got to lose

9:49

a strapped up tight enough to it was

9:51

wobbling around i really need to sort of

9:53

go back to the drawing board here and

9:55

i remember feeling quite to fly said but

9:57

i still knew and about my mind could

10:00

do this. Which was the positive, the

10:02

sort of small glimmer of light if

10:04

you like. So yeah it's been a

10:06

real roller coaster of emotions. Gosh

10:08

it's so inspiring and it's so to

10:11

be honest totally impressive for what you're

10:13

doing. So the straps have been tied

10:15

on in a special way and they're

10:18

really tight so that that fridge is

10:20

not moving. It's not going anywhere so I

10:22

literally got a luggage carrying system off of

10:24

Amazon of all the places and

10:26

it's effectively a rucksack without the bag part

10:28

and it's got a metal frame that runs

10:30

down my back and then kicks out which

10:32

the fridge sits on and then I've got

10:34

some very heavy-duty strapping which

10:36

yeah straps it on and so far she hasn't

10:39

fallen off whilst I've been running so fingers crossed.

10:41

And what does it feel like to run with a

10:43

27 kilogram fridge

10:45

on your back? Crazy as it sounds

10:48

not too bad the key to it is

10:50

getting the straps as tight as possible so

10:52

the way I get to Lulu to run is

10:55

I put her on my sofa I sort of

10:57

sit down in front of her I will do

10:59

the straps as tight as I can so I

11:01

can stand up at which point my girlfriend steps

11:03

in and pulls them as tight as physically possible.

11:05

As long as that all goes well it's not

11:07

too bad because I've got the weight sitting high.

11:09

Alright I have to run very unconventionally so I'm

11:11

hunched forward it's very hard to breathe when you've

11:13

got the chest strap done up stuff like that

11:16

but it's quite comfortable in a weird way.

11:18

So presumably the way you run is completely

11:21

different you are leaning forward a little more. Yeah I

11:23

have quite an awkward running

11:25

stance anyway people will say to me like you look like an

11:28

ironing board I'm very rigid and I think

11:30

actually that's helped him with this but yeah

11:32

I am hunched forward I'm trying to keep

11:34

obviously the weight forward so it's not pulling

11:36

me back but at the same time I'm

11:38

trying to keep my chest open because my

11:40

heart's working harder I'm trying to keep

11:42

my oxygen pumping around so it's it's

11:45

everything you don't want as a runner really but

11:47

it's it's again it's just trial

11:49

and error and I think I've managed to find the

11:51

best way that works at

11:54

the moment. It's interesting because obviously we're

11:56

in this treating plan so I'm doing London Marathon

11:58

as well and I will see you there I

12:00

will definitely not be missing you on

12:02

race day. So we've got April 21st

12:05

there's only like a few weeks to go

12:07

really but the training plan I mean I

12:09

find these long runs hard and I think

12:11

the heaviest thing I'm carrying is my lipglobe

12:14

and are you doing all your runs with Tallulah

12:16

on your back? Yeah up until very

12:19

recently anyone that's into running and follows training is

12:21

gonna kill me right now but I don't follow

12:23

a training plan. I never have done I'm

12:25

quite a stubborn person I find it

12:28

hard to follow them I'm very much

12:30

oh I've got a few hours

12:32

free let's go put in 10 miles or let's go

12:34

do five miles um that's how I work it's worked

12:36

for me so far could I have done better most

12:38

probably if I followed a training plan so if you

12:40

are listening if you have started out please don't do

12:42

what I'm doing this is not good advice. You're

12:44

one of those jammy people that just don't have

12:46

a training plan turn up and smash it and

12:48

we're all like we did everything according to the

12:51

book. I'm hoping for that but so far apart

12:53

from literally last night I went for a run

12:55

and I decided to do five miles without Tallulah

12:57

I recently got some new trainers that I'm sort

12:59

of bedding in and I thought I

13:02

just need to go for a run without Tallulah and

13:04

it was a drizzly cold night got my rain jacket

13:06

on and I thought put my AirPods in cranked up

13:08

my rock music and I thought yeah this is why

13:10

I love music you know I felt free I felt

13:12

light and I enjoyed it so I think it's very

13:14

important like no matter what you're training for and if

13:17

you are following a training planning it is hard

13:19

sometimes it's really good just to take that step

13:21

back remember why you started running remember why you

13:23

love running and I think it keeps you focused

13:25

in the end I agree because sometimes you can get

13:27

really weird don't even if you're doing a training plan

13:30

there are always weeks where they rain it in a

13:32

bit and stick it back yeah and I think that

13:34

is to just give you a bit of a breather

13:36

and to just let you enjoy it a bit more

13:38

it's hard you're training you're training is a full-time

13:41

job then if you're working you're trying to fit

13:43

that in if you're in a relationship you know

13:45

my girlfriend's wants some attention as well and I'm

13:47

trying to fit days out with her and seeing

13:49

my son and it's very demanding so I think

13:52

if you were on a training plan that just

13:54

sort of ramped up and never eased off you'd

13:56

go insane yeah and it would it would put

13:58

you off your angle yeah very important not

14:01

to lose sight and focus on why

14:03

you're doing it really. Absolutely. Now

14:05

you're doing it, we know what you said for

14:07

a diabetes UK. Is Sam struggle with or has

14:09

he completely got everything under control? So Sam's

14:11

type one over the 15 years I've known

14:13

him it's very different. We were 18 we

14:15

were going out we were having too much

14:18

to drink on a night out and seeing

14:20

how it affects him is quite scary and

14:22

even going around his house for what you

14:24

think is a quiet night and the next

14:26

thing you're having to get an ambulance around.

14:28

It's scary how quick someone with diabetes can

14:30

change so even seeing him in the time

14:32

that I've known him the change in technology

14:34

and him now having a patch on his

14:36

arm which can alert him to his phone

14:38

if he's going high or low. It's been

14:40

amazing and look I'm not

14:42

a doctor I'm never going to cure

14:44

diabetes but I can do something

14:47

stupid that's hopefully going to raise lots of

14:49

money which will allow the people to do

14:51

that and yeah Sam's my best mate he's

14:53

been there for me through thick and thin

14:55

and it's the least I can do. Yeah

14:57

oh you're such a good friend to be doing

14:59

I mean I hope he's coming down to support you

15:01

on the day. Yeah he'll be there with his children

15:03

and his wife cheering me on. Taking you for a

15:05

really decent lunch or dinner or whatever it is

15:07

at the end. I will be inhaling any food

15:09

or drink I see you when I finish. So how

15:12

does it work then when you're running with that what if you

15:14

need what if you need the toilet aren't they? I haven't

15:16

crossed that. Okay yeah I haven't crossed that. I think

15:18

the key is thinking that fridge is not going in

15:20

a port-a-loo. No well do you know what to get

15:22

it off it's actually not too bad it's more getting

15:24

it back on again so taking it from the floor

15:26

onto my back is just no way possible. I need

15:28

something to be able to put it on like a

15:30

fence or something so yeah I mean if there's nothing

15:33

around I just can't stop I've just got to keep

15:35

on going. What's the longest training run you

15:37

will do with Touloula on your back? So

15:39

to date I've done a half marathon but

15:41

I'm planning to do a couple of 20

15:43

miles and then I think once I hit

15:46

20 miles that's a big psychological barrier and

15:48

then I'm happy I know I can do

15:50

it. I've never done the London marathon I've

15:52

never done a race on the scale of

15:55

the London marathon but I can just imagine

15:57

the atmosphere on the day is going to

15:59

be unbelievable and I know that it will be enough

16:01

to get me through. Yeah, it will be. And

16:03

we were talking as well, you know, it's the

16:05

fact that, and you said as well, it's the

16:07

third flattest marathon. Yes, I believe that's correct,

16:09

yeah. Well, I mean, even there are

16:11

a couple of slight inclines, but they're not

16:14

hills at all, but those inclines can be

16:16

quite gruesome when you're tired, but I imagine

16:18

they'll be quite painful

16:20

for you when you're here. Yeah, so I

16:22

train in Stevenage. Stevenage is very hilly. Well,

16:25

it's hilly as you get around the area.

16:27

And, you know, I'm averaging sort of 12

16:29

and a half minute miles, and that's power walking

16:32

a lot of hills. I need to be quicker,

16:34

but my theory is that if I can do

16:36

that with hills involved, put me on a flat

16:38

and hopefully it'll go a lot better. So

16:40

what is the record? This is why I'm fascinated, because,

16:42

look, there are loads of people

16:44

that do the marathon every year, they're like,

16:47

fastest person dressed as a baby, or fastest

16:49

person dressed as a rainmower, whatever it is.

16:51

What is the record for the fridge? So

16:53

it's a very respectable record. It's held

16:56

by a British Royal Marine. Four

16:58

hours, 52 minutes and 10 seconds. Four

17:00

hours, 52, oh my goodness.

17:03

Yeah. That's fast. It's fast. I

17:05

mean, you run that without a fridge on your

17:07

back. That's a very, very respectable marathon time. I

17:10

believe 100% I can do it without

17:12

a shadow of doubt. It's going to be close. It's

17:14

going to be close. Oh my goodness, this is

17:16

complete jeopardy here. How

17:18

exciting. Listen, for your sponsorship, in

17:20

order to sponsor you, how

17:22

do we do that? So the best way to do

17:24

it is through my Just Giving page. So if you

17:26

go onto Just Giving website and search my name, Daniel

17:29

Fairbrother, or with all the media attention that I've had,

17:31

if you just Google my name, it does come up

17:33

in all the stories about me. It really does. It

17:35

really does as well. It's crazy. I literally,

17:37

all you have to put in is Daniel fridge,

17:39

because I was talking about you to my producer

17:41

in the studio when we were on air, and

17:43

he literally just went Daniel fridge and up it

17:45

comes. It was crazy.

17:48

There was articles about me in America.

17:51

There's a TV show in Germany that's doing a quiz

17:53

show and they're abusing me as one of their questions.

17:55

Oh, how funny. It's just been mad. But it is

17:57

because you got stopped by the police. I mean, imagine sort

17:59

of. They think you were a nick in a fridge. I

18:01

think like anyone, they just had so many questions. Where's the

18:04

fridge come from? Has he nicked it? Why is it on

18:06

his back? Why is he running with it? And

18:08

they stopped me and they just were like, I

18:10

think, I hope you can understand. We've got to

18:12

stop you. And I said, yeah, look, it's fine.

18:14

It was a very dark night. So they're pulled

18:16

up beside me. The lights are going. Everyone stopped

18:18

and looking at me. And I'm just like, oh

18:20

no. Because I'm not the sort of person that

18:22

likes the limelight. I'm very happy being in the

18:24

background. You strap a fridge on your back. People

18:26

want to know what you're doing. They start looking

18:28

at you. So I'm still getting used to that.

18:30

It was my second run. And the police are

18:32

like, what are you doing? And I was like,

18:34

look, I can explain it all. I promise. And

18:36

it actually turned out being this very positive interaction.

18:38

They wish me all the best. They shook my

18:40

hand. But I mean, if it wasn't for them,

18:42

I don't know where I would be today, you

18:44

know. So thank you, Harpshire police, for listening. Harpshire

18:47

police actually ended up putting out a statement,

18:49

wishing you the very best of luck, and

18:51

kind of apologizing for stopping you. Yeah, they got

18:53

bombarded. They had every news agency and radio station after

18:55

them. And I was like, oh no. They're really going

18:58

to be after me now. Ha ha. I

19:08

think there is something with running, I mean,

19:10

no matter how hard the challenge. And you're

19:12

right. There is something that's just so enjoyable

19:14

to do. I mean, you've made it a

19:17

little bit harder than the average person out

19:19

running. But what an incredible thing to do,

19:21

to put something you enjoy doing so much.

19:23

And just it's a way to make it

19:25

a bit more challenging, I guess. Yeah,

19:27

it is. I mentioned briefly

19:29

before we started that I got into

19:31

running because of my mental health. I

19:33

went through a divorce. I was extremely

19:35

stressed at the time. And I needed

19:37

an outlet for that stress. And if

19:39

anyone's listening today and you're thinking about

19:41

running, or maybe you've just started, doesn't

19:43

matter what your reason is, whether it's you

19:46

want to lower your blood pressure, your cholesterol,

19:48

you want to improve your general fitness. Maybe

19:50

like me, you're overrun with stress. I cannot

19:52

explain to you how free your mind or

19:55

body feels when you're out running. It's

19:57

just like you unlock this new

19:59

world. and you can think clearly, you talk

20:02

about the runners high all the time. And it's quite funny

20:04

because I was listening to your podcast every day when I'm

20:06

out running and I'm like, the first four miles, I feel

20:08

awful. I, oh, it doesn't matter how

20:10

far I'm running, the first four miles, I feel dreadful.

20:12

But once I get past that four miles, it's just

20:14

unbelievable. I feel like I could run all day. And

20:16

for me, that's the runners high. And I

20:19

just get this clarity where I can figure out

20:21

my problems from the day, you know, if my

20:23

boss has been nagging me or my car broke

20:25

down, I can forget all that. And I'm in

20:27

the moment and I just feel free. And it's

20:29

just the most amazing experience. Yeah, I

20:31

mean, it is an incredible thing. But what

20:33

I find most fascinating is that you did

20:35

only start running in the last, well, in

20:37

lockdown, really. Yeah, it was. It was

20:39

in lockdown. Yeah, I went to the gym,

20:41

didn't have a clue what I was doing.

20:43

So I just went on the treadmill and

20:46

got into it. And funny enough, I was

20:48

listening to a podcast at the time and

20:50

I heard this guy called David Goggins, who's

20:52

an American Navy SEAL. I would love to

20:54

get him on run for it. It's amazing.

20:56

And I just listened to how he had

20:58

been through this hardship and he changed his

21:00

mentality. And something within that stuck in my

21:02

brain. And from that day forward, I never

21:04

looked back. And I signed up to the

21:06

Cambridge Half Marathon. I was six weeks out.

21:08

I thought, what am I going to do? So

21:11

I googled, what's the respectable half marathon time? It

21:13

come up sub two hours. I thought, right, that's

21:15

what I'll go for. I've run it in an

21:17

hour 50 and I was hooked. Never looked back.

21:19

Did a couple more half marathons. And then I

21:22

decided in 2023, I'd

21:25

go the whole hog and I signed up for

21:27

six half marathons, a marathon and two ultras. So

21:30

I just like went from zero to 100 miles an hour. But

21:34

that's the only way I know how to do something. Do you have

21:36

time to do all the training? This is the thing,

21:38

because I think a lot of people would like to commit

21:40

to a race, but actually training, you forget how time consuming.

21:42

It's very hard. There's a lot of training you're committing to.

21:44

It was. So at the time when I did

21:47

the most of the races, I was single and

21:49

it worked out quite well. But I mean, you

21:51

could find me running around my local town at

21:53

midnight, which was crazy. But now it is very

21:55

hard, you know, I'm juggling a full time job.

21:57

I'm juggling a relationship. I'm trying to train for

21:59

a marathon. And it is very

22:01

hard, but I think if you're dedicated and you want

22:03

to get the results, you will find a way eventually.

22:05

And it's just about balance, you know. Some people, they

22:08

get up in the morning and do it. I can't

22:10

do that. I can't. I'm just not a morning person.

22:12

So I would rather go for a run at 8

22:14

o'clock, 9 o'clock at night and do it that way.

22:17

How are you going to cope on marathon day when

22:19

the race isn't the actual morning? Yeah, I think I'll

22:21

be okay. It's different on the day. Yeah, it's different

22:23

on the day. And I don't really have a run

22:25

on a Sunday and I always think, oh, I'll do

22:27

another day because Sunday's my day in bed. But

22:31

it is a big psychological thing and I think

22:33

maybe closer to the time, I will also try

22:35

and do a few longer runs on the Sunday.

22:37

So typically people will taper. I will do quite

22:40

a heavy taper. I most probably will do some

22:42

runs without Tallulah. I don't want to risk injury

22:44

so close to the time. So I'll most probably

22:46

try and do a couple of longer runs on

22:48

the Sunday and get my mind into that set

22:51

really. How did you come up with the name Tallulah, by the way? So

22:53

growing up, one of my favourite films was Call

22:55

Runnings. So I was looking for a funny play

22:57

on words for my name and I came up

23:00

with Call Runnings. And they ended up calling the

23:02

bobsled in the end in the film, but their

23:04

other option was Tallulah. So I went with that

23:06

for my fridge. Very good, Niamh. I was curious.

23:08

And you've got some pictures on there as well.

23:10

Yeah, so I've got some fridge magnets. I've got

23:12

my son on there. I've got my girlfriend and

23:14

her two boys. And then also that's what Jensen,

23:17

my son, designed at Christmas. So yeah, I think

23:19

it's just nice. It's sort of, again, when you

23:21

take it off, you get in from a long

23:23

run and you're tired and you think that was tough. Little

23:25

things like that just keep you focused on why you're doing

23:28

it really. Listen, for anyone who's listening

23:30

now, and I know you've done a lot of

23:32

running anyway, so you can talk from experience. Anyone

23:34

who's going into any kind of long distance running,

23:37

what are your tips for getting through it? I

23:39

mean, let's fridge aside. Yes. I

23:41

think it's a case of set yourself a goal.

23:43

You know, so for example, my longest

23:45

run, as I mentioned, was my 100 kilometre ultra marathon.

23:48

I went into it. I didn't have a clue

23:50

what I was doing. I was a few weeks

23:52

out. I was watching YouTube videos on people that

23:54

had run the race I was doing. And one

23:57

piece of advice that stuck in my head was

23:59

forget the 100 kilometres. There's the aid stations

24:01

every 12.5km. You make it to that aid station,

24:03

you refuel, you make it to the next one,

24:05

so you break it down into bite-sized chunks. Now,

24:07

you can maybe transfer that to you want to

24:09

do a marathon, but you couldn't maybe run a

24:11

whole marathon. There's no shame in running a mile,

24:14

walking half a mile, running a mile. Set yourself

24:16

a goal and stick to it. But the biggest

24:18

thing, and I fall short of this every time,

24:20

is when you turn up on race day, don't

24:22

get caught up in the hype. Don't hear them

24:24

call out the one and a half hour paces

24:26

on a half marathon and think, yeah, I'll go

24:29

for that. Stick to what you trained for.

24:31

Know that you've trained well for it and

24:33

properly for it. And the effects

24:35

will show on the day. Such good advice. I

24:37

am that person. I do

24:39

it every time. You're at the start and there are

24:41

people running past and you see all these, there's

24:44

paces with flags kind of on their back,

24:46

and you see the time you go, that's

24:48

too fast. That's too... Oh! And then in

24:51

your head, even though, say, you've been

24:53

training for a five-hour marathon, you see the 3.30 one

24:56

and you're like, maybe out the blue.

24:58

Yeah. I can get that today. Today

25:00

is the day. I will do it. I'm

25:02

going to give it a go. And all that happens is

25:04

you try and keep up with them for

25:06

as long as you can, and you're basically shattered.

25:09

And you then got the rest of your race

25:11

to do and try and maintain the pace you

25:13

initially planned to do. It's complete

25:15

race suicide. Do not do it. If

25:18

anything, go the opposite. If you're aiming

25:20

for a four and a half hour and they have a 4.45, go

25:23

with a 4.45 because what you'll find

25:25

is actually, you'll see people running a little bit ahead of

25:27

you and it will spur you on to overtake them. And

25:30

you eventually sort of catch up your pace and maybe halfway

25:32

through the race. You're not out of breath and actually you

25:34

think, this is quite nice. I'm now running at my right

25:36

pace. That's a really good tip actually, because

25:38

yeah, there's nothing worse and more demoralizing than seeing

25:40

your group move on without you. But if you

25:43

were able to just always able to keep up

25:45

with your group, then it's such a better way.

25:47

It makes you feel much more positive on the

25:49

day. It really is. And it goes back to what I

25:51

said earlier. For me, running is 70% mentality. If

25:54

you can keep yourself in the race mentally

25:56

and not see your pace to drift off

25:58

into the distance. you stand so much

26:00

of a better chance of A, finishing and B, doing

26:03

what you set out to do at that time. Do

26:05

you know my biggest challenge, and I don't know

26:07

if anyone else is like this, but I do

26:09

always set off much faster than I should do.

26:11

And it's because I'm like, well I'm feeling good

26:13

and I'm not trying to keep up necessarily with

26:16

the Pacers. I'm just getting carried away with everyone

26:18

else. You get caught in the crowd that are

26:20

running fast and suddenly to run that bit slower

26:22

feels wrong. It does. So I remember

26:24

one year my dad was watching me online. I

26:27

was like, oh my goodness, you were getting a half

26:29

marathon PB, which is good. First

26:31

half marathon, second half marathon maybe a

26:33

PW. But it goes very dark very

26:35

quickly. It does. It really

26:38

does. It's so hard. And there's something

26:40

about race day. I mean, I've never done anything on

26:42

the scale of London, but there is something about race

26:44

day that you just get caught up in the hype.

26:46

And before you know it, you're running so fast. And

26:49

I did it at a half marathon not long ago. I set off

26:51

and I was trying to keep up with a guy running one and

26:53

a half hours. And I was like, what am I doing? I can

26:55

barely run a 140. Slow down.

26:57

And the trouble was five miles in I

26:59

was completely knackered and I still finished 140,

27:01

but it wasn't an enjoyable

27:04

race. And I think

27:06

that's something that's really important. If you haven't maybe

27:08

done a race and you're thinking about doing one,

27:10

enjoy it. It's a great atmosphere. The community is

27:12

great. The running community are great. So many times

27:14

I've walked away and I thought I've not even

27:17

got myself a photo of myself. You know, I'm

27:19

so worried about just going out the blocks. I've

27:21

not enjoyed it. I've not taken in the atmosphere.

27:23

And I think it's a real shame. You

27:26

do. You've put in so much hard work for it. You've got

27:28

to enjoy it. Yeah. And there's

27:30

part of it now loads of people take selfies

27:32

on their way around. And unless you are smashing

27:34

it out, going for like an amazing time and

27:36

you're fully focused, you should. I

27:38

mean on London Bridge, that's the best place

27:40

to get a selfie when you're crossing that

27:42

bridge and oh, it's just the most exciting,

27:44

exciting feeling. And by the way, the noise

27:46

is overwhelmingly loud. I

27:49

honestly cannot wait. I think if I had to

27:51

go and run a marathon. I think I will

27:53

mad when they see you. That looks crazy. Without

27:55

that crowd and that encouragement and the cheering, I

27:57

wouldn't be able to do it. The

28:00

to have their applied to support station suits

28:02

diabetes of course. It will have up a

28:04

few support stations all the way rice and

28:06

they will go bananas when they see. A

28:08

yes or have too big to stations, the last

28:10

on being a Big Ben which is about a

28:12

mile from the en masse and on. So glad

28:15

it's sad because that's gonna give me the final

28:17

cheer I need to see me for to the

28:19

end And and yeah it's gonna be an emotional

28:21

day because you know I am doing it for

28:23

my friend for Diabetes Uk. I am doing it

28:26

for personal reasons. The main goal is to raise

28:28

the money the system door would be to set

28:30

the well record as I can do it great

28:32

talent is not problem I will for way my

28:34

head held high to very respectful world record so

28:37

it's gonna be a very emotional. Day and more

28:39

than one. I'm gonna say i'm

28:41

so excited for you, Excited, nervous and

28:43

them so relieved. It's not me seventy

28:45

with earnest with such a seal. Any

28:48

get back? Any? Absolutely. Census. Know

28:50

my feel, amazing how to yeah I I'm

28:52

taking me wrong once my body stops the

28:54

like start her in the shin splints the

28:56

muslim side body say to themselves training with

28:59

a year lot of us sort of thing

29:01

abroad and on my shoulders about it on

29:03

not big person I'm not a royal marine

29:05

who's training every day so it has been

29:07

hard. I don't do a lot of weight

29:10

training so it has been very hard and

29:12

again you know carrying a fridge goes against

29:14

everything. When you run naturally you'll have to

29:16

a top level. Actually have some of my

29:18

far as. They have very lean you

29:21

know that rule a bow insurance they're

29:23

not a big because being big and

29:25

running.necessary go together so it's very hard

29:28

try and find that balance sites hopefully

29:30

to legalise coins me on the day

29:32

and she helps out Var will say

29:35

I'm sure. And. Listen, island see good,

29:37

let anyone his in training for and I said

29:39

i mean it's only a number of weeks away

29:41

I've got a couple of really long runs coming

29:43

up imminently and a sauce and it's the I

29:46

tried said it's a good to do these on

29:48

sick at the miles in the lead. To this

29:50

is it and this is the hall period because

29:52

everybody will be get into the hardest point of

29:54

that that training plan now the long run the

29:56

coming up to close to your type us so

29:58

he says he potus. Your long

30:00

runs put you off your so close to and

30:02

now. And also by the way you'll be so

30:05

great slips as long runs on the day yes

30:07

cause you will have practiced came to this distances.

30:09

The as you can go into it not doing

30:11

anywhere close to the distance because your your body

30:13

needs that you need to practice your fueling. how

30:16

are you going to take your fuel on? You

30:18

know this sort of staff if you go into

30:20

it blind. I mean I'm pretty crazy for Avon,

30:22

even on the that crisis and. Running

30:24

the south? Where did you have a little bell with

30:26

all your gels? On So at the moment I

30:28

were a hydration thus more so to pat me

30:31

out. Know that because I am quite small and

30:33

I find with the hydration best known as and

30:35

do the threats of a bit tighter but I

30:37

think on the die as well Now have a

30:39

running hours Well I'm not a huge fan of

30:41

gels or fungi was not really wants me I

30:43

use glucose tablets something like that. I would like

30:45

to try and incorporate some sort physical food as

30:47

well by I'm ready for that one out yet

30:49

said he see me running around with been on

30:52

a stretch my arms or Faisal Mr you know

30:54

I. Am Daniel Thank you

30:56

so much Clean! Before you go though, you

30:58

have to do the rumple. It snows, the

31:00

quakes, click fire I have. are you ready

31:02

for? I am ready. Okay, so which trainers

31:04

will. You be Running as answer. Just got myself

31:07

a new paths and sexy up and use in

31:09

Hot Girl how to how you pronounce it for

31:11

trial running. But yeah, six now. See this is

31:13

that your what you are one of those people

31:16

that got the Hillary's proceeds on a sec. Happily

31:18

how many different races he does else? Yeah. Is

31:20

hop and that's another thing as well as your

31:22

lessons. Getting into running it can be expensive, but

31:24

you don't need to go and spend two hundred

31:27

pounds on a pair of try. Things you think

31:29

he gets expensive because when you get into running

31:31

your head is turned my old a lovely cat.

31:33

Yeah you sign up and you see someone

31:35

with a hydration on and of to the

31:37

the sunglasses on an adult thus the running

31:39

on that was he thinks anita anita look

31:41

like that for it's but you don't you

31:43

know I started off with a Perez since

31:45

assets from sports direct that were like thirty

31:47

pounds and I run them into the ground

31:49

the ramos us to stick outrun them so

31:51

you don't need all that kit bus or

31:53

what I would say as make sure you

31:55

get something comfortable. The at. That they, that's

31:57

what they said become for his house. That atlas.

32:00

No to I would say as well. I got

32:02

some new trainers recently and I didn't get them

32:04

big enough. So I'm like a size seven and

32:06

a half ago a size eight. The actually undies.

32:08

In. A in haskell right he still balloon when I'm running

32:11

so yeah I'm in the last summer know two summers

32:13

ago for be a good idea when out for run

32:15

with some socks on than it was my see was

32:17

side of hearts and the next on of all when

32:19

my socks running along with augusto in in my she's

32:21

afflicted i wasn't a sign it was or the skin

32:23

of the bomb. Please

32:25

make sure you're prepared. Or a d rom for outplayed.

32:27

Assessed. On the outside his things

32:30

have a rather. Jr likes you and I think

32:32

he said you've lost tone hours of last

32:34

time now. my old shows blisters, signing up

32:36

for my math, and this year also no

32:38

I haven't. Lost to now and I think it's because

32:40

I've gone that size up. Yeah, that's the trouble is when

32:42

your toenails at the front of you train a constantly. They

32:44

moved from. Yeah, okay, blend is your what. we've discussed

32:46

this briefly that when is your favorite time of days

32:49

ago? there. Yet so you some me it's

32:51

different in the evenings and it's also I'd

32:53

I'd very cold, not so much where this

32:55

is a nice cold Chris morning he can't

32:57

be said is your favorite time of year.

32:59

Winter is a definitely you don't they called

33:01

for long he seemed more mouth is it's

33:04

just amazing. As a silly oh my goodness

33:06

what kind of went there are you hoping

33:08

for on race day? Nice and cool nice

33:10

and co I don't wanna be where no

33:12

one enjoys running in the rain. it's It's

33:14

really disheartening. So nice and cool. Overcast? Yeah.

33:16

Be perfect. For the Us I'm looking at to

33:19

Lula here and she's you know, a backhoe phrase I say let

33:21

that we should be given you a nice. right? Yeah well

33:23

I have tried up in Mcdonalds companies a

33:25

sponsorship and I have tried best gone through

33:27

and the habits are out of on a

33:29

cell. And know flares your.

33:31

Favorite place to go for run our song from

33:33

the country so get me on a country road

33:36

and I just love that you know you've reached

33:38

the peak of a hill and always to see

33:40

for miles is suits you know that some he

33:42

is amazing That's why I think my heart lies

33:44

his trial running and I'll I called for running

33:46

so much because we live in such an amazing

33:49

countries are so many beautiful places to see. You

33:51

know to go to the Cotswolds, go to the

33:53

Peak Districts. Go for Run! It's amazing. Yeah there's

33:55

so much as ninety so. And offend you

33:57

that runner's high. So for me asking a really

33:59

tough. But soon as I hit that

34:02

four mile mark is just this a most

34:04

amazing feeling. Wow I feel like a good

34:06

guy forever which I know I can't assess

34:08

but at the time he still like along

34:10

that I for temple run but I could

34:12

do thirty miles, forty miles and the me

34:14

that's what it's all about Yeah makes you

34:16

feel good as the most amazing feeling. It's

34:18

free, completely free com be So yes. I

34:21

love it and when he said the it's taken up

34:23

running as well because us living up as a puppet.

34:25

The. Same Yes. So I'd come out of the

34:27

marriage, moved out the family home and I

34:29

moved into one that flat above the pops

34:31

and I just remember things the most of

34:34

us have been upheld every day. So what

34:36

are we gonna do? and that sort of

34:38

And running as like exercise or beth and

34:40

thanks without success or something? His assets in

34:42

so many people until they've given that go

34:45

they don't realize. Hey joyful it comey seal.

34:47

Yes, I listen. You know I'm not

34:49

gonna preach to people about you must

34:51

eat vegetables in the Us. I don't

34:53

have the best die Us. I'm very

34:55

much a believer on London's just doesn't

34:57

have a pizza or oh so you've

34:59

gotta watch out. You know it's and.

35:02

I. Just think that as long as you

35:04

have a healthy balance lifestyles and you exercise

35:06

did it The best buy photo via average

35:08

age is a think it can be hard

35:10

as you think are gonna go for long

35:12

run at the weekend but also you know

35:14

because nice to have a cold there and

35:17

I from yeah. Absolutely so. Why

35:19

is it that you love running

35:21

for me? It's the it's the impact

35:23

it's had on my house. You know that

35:25

was the initial start of that. You know

35:27

it completely change me as a person. Then

35:29

I managed to sort of tap into this

35:31

amazing community. the is running and I would

35:33

urge you if you are listening and you're

35:36

thinking of running and you don't know how

35:38

to get into have done for his boots

35:40

Your local Muslim groups and will be local

35:42

running groups are amazing Us to stop some

35:44

amazing once in Stevenage Saddened by the Spartans

35:46

stephen his stride as as nosed go and

35:49

meet them They will take you a for

35:51

around They will get you to where he

35:53

wants to be an Aussie sort of. Now

35:55

in sort of felt myself wrapped in this

35:57

and communities. It's amazing That's the nicest people.

36:00

I've met people that are like run two

36:02

hundred plus marathons and I'm like wow I'm

36:04

in or of them and they're like all

36:06

I'm I'm in or of you and I'm

36:08

like no I'm not doing anything amazing. it's

36:11

uses amazing sites for me, it's just this

36:13

journey has taken me on yeah and running

36:15

communities amazing is unbelievable. So supportive The park

36:17

run a child's when he wanted to the

36:19

parts on the volunteers and puts on every

36:22

says tonight's is a five k it's completely

36:24

free to do. I did it two weeks

36:26

guy was to lula it cause chaos but

36:28

again it was amazing. The egg. At it

36:30

really has sent. Listen Daniel it's been so

36:32

lovely to half years and on run

36:34

ploy to thank you so much for

36:36

come again. I love it snowed myself

36:39

I don't know how you are running

36:41

up hills ssl ala thousand and save

36:43

for anyone coming outta hell what tipped

36:45

city has that little Africa and and

36:47

fritz yes I. Salute has been interesting

36:49

of hell was that again I take it

36:51

back to my Ultra So one a bit

36:53

of advice or gonna pick up a thing

36:55

from a youtube video was is your race

36:57

is full of hills sat through every hero

36:59

like it's the last hill said by the

37:01

if you think right in twenty miles on

37:03

to be cruel and not that last two

37:06

books with us to don't dentist and at

37:08

that fast have completely was sort of your

37:10

energy and embryos go of Ninety miles to

37:12

go, Sixty miles to go. So I think

37:14

it's really a case of knowing what you're

37:16

capable of. And then again there's no. Shame.

37:18

and walking up the hill hills are not fun.

37:20

They're not fun to run a take all of

37:22

your energy to power will kick. Get to the

37:25

top. Carry on. Run! Yeah! That's the thing is you

37:27

can see the that of energy season keep going. At. The top

37:29

the or when or if you do an

37:31

ultra martha and and you see someone running

37:33

up the hill you know in a female

37:35

should be I've taken them division so don't

37:37

be disheartened as he sees him among up

37:40

a their iver world class athlete or that

37:42

going to be gusto in about see my

37:44

ss. And daniel that as a una in the

37:46

run for drunk of thank you so much. Nicer

37:48

37:54

37:57

37:59

race day. Please given the match

38:01

here because for a say in is

38:03

really really very. Incredible A sound so

38:05

crazy but honestly a year a good go

38:07

on. You know it makes all the difference

38:09

to anybody running says you are outlining the

38:12

streets of London on my states. Please do

38:14
