because I wanted to know what the genesis

of this project was, why they did the

watched a couple of different parts of the

about this film. I got to

see the film. I screened it a couple of

days ago. I finished it up last night. I

went back and watched a couple of other parts

of this. And I'm very curious about your inspiration

behind this film. Why Sasquatch Sunset?

Why now? Is this something that you guys

4:26

have been into for a while? Why this

4:28

particular subject and why now? We would

4:30

always love Bigfoot. Since we were kids, I

4:33

think maybe a lot of people our age

4:35

were obsessed with this show in search of

4:37

Leonard Nimoy hosted. But each episode

4:39

was about a different form of paranormal

4:42

phenomena in one way or another. And there was

4:44

a Bigfoot episode and they focused on the Patterson

4:46

Gimlin film. We were just completely

4:48

obsessed with it from then on. And

4:51

then this time we'd buy, especially in the edge

4:53

of the internet when there would be other Sasquatch

4:55

videos on YouTube and whatnot. We would start

4:57

off as a joke talking about, you're seeing the same thing.

It's just Bigfoot walking. Whether it looked

5:02

legit or it was clear that it was

5:04

fake, it was always the same kind of

5:06

content. So we were like, this is a

5:08

complex animal, just like every other animal. What

5:10

else is it doing? So we started just

5:12

to satiate our own curiosity initially, just trying

5:14

to think about what was going on in

5:16

the interior lives of Sasquatches. And most films

5:18

that have been made are either family films

5:20

or horror films. They're always from a human

5:22

perspective. And we thought it was most interesting

to approach it from their perspective

5:27

and try to get in their minds and see the

5:29

world through their eyes as much as

5:31

possible. I love that perspective for

sure. And I've taken some questions from my

audience. I posted about this upcoming interview and

a couple of people asked the same question

in different variations. You mentioned the Patterson Gimlin

film. Is there anything that has stuck out?

Maybe it is the PG film. Maybe it's

some of the other stuff that's out there

on the internet. Is there anything that stuck

out to you over the years that you've

considered to be evidence of possible Sasquatch existing?

Do You think that's a possibility? Is That something that

you've given credence to over the years? We.

Want it to be so bad where it

like skeptics by nature but then we want

to be wrong and i think the person

reason. Whether people are believers in

resonate for some people and we've talked

kind of the a connection to humans

and the natural world or to that

a gray area between human animal behavior,

all the things that there's a need.

This is not a casual thing. There's

a reason why we are so fascinated.

Big Foot. And. This is an idealist.

long, but even before Europeans came to

questions. It came from the audience and it was certainly

on the forefront of my mind. I have several shows

considered mainstream Sasquatch researchers in putting this

film. The Given: How did you guys get the information

on what you guys are going to stay home and the

behaviors of these creatures in those kind of things that were

combination of things we wanted to go with

some of the most familiar tropes people had

in terms of Six Foot as a entry

point because it is that when prevailing thought

of every single aspect of this a lot

of debate with it which is fascinating is

we try to stick with the most common

traits in terms of their physicality and as

a baseline and their demeanor. So there was

a starting point with a lot of research

sounds or are finding things like the Southwest,

the Nests. They are building or the glyphs.

elements that a lot of people have had

maybe unexpected that happened during the filming?

as we really wanted to. Legitimize these

creatures and make the audience enough for

them and so is really important. film.

In. Their natural habitat like Informed Up

Really? Show their interaction with nature,

especially animals. We incorporate a lot

talking by the interact interacting with different features like

that they would find in the forests are like

this friends we call it the friends with the

forest sort of with with a sasquatch and it

was fascinating like we were worried about how some

of a how would a porcupine or his gun

or a raccoon react to these are creatures

and they were the most non-plus. It

was just like, oh, it was like

anything else. Anything else. That felt like

an interesting connection of, oh yeah,

Bigfoot probably like, they've

made these seamless before. They were

so like cool with the Bigfoot

customs. It felt their acceptance of

the Bigfoot helped legitimize it as a

viewer, hopefully. Because if they feel real

to the animals, hopefully they can feel

real to the audience. So that's why we

never, we didn't shoot any sound stages. It

was very difficult. Normally with creature work like

10:31

this, they're done on sound stages in very

10:33

controlled environments with very controlled lighting

10:35

to make this relatable and believable as

10:37

much as possible. We wanted to shoot

10:40

on location in remote areas

10:42

with natural light, kind of a 70s feel

10:44

in terms of the naturalism with it. Because

10:46

we thought that was just important to give

10:49

as much credence to these creatures as

10:51

something real. Yeah, I don't know if this is

10:53

a spoiler alert or not, but there's not any dialogue in

10:56

this movie. Did you guys

10:58

find it difficult as writers,

directors, producers, making this film,

11:03

making these characters relatable without the

11:05

use of dialogue? Because that's one

11:07

of the most powerful things in

11:09

filmmaking is obviously the dialogue,

11:11

the written word, and then what we

11:13

experience with the soundtrack. How

did you guys approach that? Was it something that you

11:18

found difficult when you were making the movie to create

11:20

this connection? Because the actors,

11:23

in my personal opinion, do a phenomenal

11:25

job creating that connection. I

11:27

felt connected to these characters after I

11:29

went through this movie. So how

11:31

did you guys approach that as filmmakers? Did you

11:33

find it difficult going into it? And did you

11:36

have to adjust while you were making the film?

11:38

We definitely had to adjust. I'd say it was

11:40

both difficult and then also liberating. We had to

11:42

rewire our brain in a certain way for how

11:44

to tell a story because we've done some movies

11:47

that are very dialogue driven. And so you don't

11:49

have the shorthand of that for easy exposition. But

11:51

I think because so much of

11:53

this film is about basic needs of

11:55

these creatures and their intentions are pretty

11:58

straightforward and very relatable. on

12:00

a universal level. It's easy enough to follow

12:02

the plot and I think as we were

12:04

making it, realizing how much, even though they

12:06

communicate with grunts, there's no subtitles or anything

12:08

like that, but it's very clear what their

12:10

intentions and needs are. And through

12:12

the way we chose to shoot it, through

12:15

their physicality and through their facial expressions,

12:17

particularly through their eyes, we felt very

12:19

comfortable and liberated in giving

12:21

information that way. Tussock felt like maybe

12:24

the way silent films were made, where it's

12:26

like you have to tell the story, and

12:28

other ways to tell the story and make

12:30

it clear. But by doing that, through the

12:32

body language and through the facial expression, it

12:34

helps you connect them on an emotional level more

12:37

directly, which was one of the most important things

12:39

to us with this, because if you didn't care

12:41

about these creatures, the movie would feel like a

12:43

gimmick and get boring in 10 minutes. We want

12:45

it, as it went on, to become more and

12:47

more invested in them and find this connection to

12:49

them, which like I was saying before, is one

12:51

of the big things that I think white

12:54

people are obsessed with Bigfoot. If people are into Bigfoot,

12:56

it's not like a passive thing. It's a deep love

12:58

and fascination, and I think it's because

there's some element of their existence that we

13:02

have a connection to. The

13:04

movie definitely blends elements of

13:06

adventure, discovery, loss, but there's

13:09

clearly this tongue-in-cheek element

13:11

that permeates throughout the film.

How did you guys balance that

to create this cohesive narrative

13:18

that's going to resonate with

13:20

widespread audiences, and were there challenges

13:22

that you guys faced when you were putting the film

13:24

together and doing that, and how did you overcome them,

13:26

as well? Everything we do tends

13:28

to, not intentionally, it ends up being a

13:31

mix of kind of comedy and pathos, but

13:33

just an intuitive process, which way we never

13:35

force it one way or the other, whatever

13:37

feels like the most real moment in it,

13:40

and we've all seen movies where you see

13:42

that something has like a false note, just

13:44

feels bullshit, and so for us, it's never

13:46

forcing it. So if something, it's

13:48

just what feels relatable on a human level, so

13:50

if something, even if on the page it

13:52

was a little more dramatic, we're doing it, just know in

13:54

real life, this is a very funny, In

13:56

terms of human folly or whatever, this is something that is

13:59

inherently funny. Let's embrace it. Is it? And then

if is something is not. This moment is

14:03

truly sad and is not a look for

14:05

punches when it. Let's embrace the full spectrum

of existence on this world with both the

14:10

comedy and tragedy in everyday life. As comedy,

tragedy in these are eight and elements in

the same boat. The wanted to be open

to a full spectrum. Was a

little bit but the casting process. There's a small

cast in this movie. That had to

14:23

be an important thing. When you're putting this together,

you have to seek out people who are going

to be able to pull this off. The prosthetics,

the the make up, the things that they're working

14:31

around and working through. A lack of

14:33

dialogue. All these things. One of the casting process like

for you guys going into this and could you talk

14:38

a little bit about the selection of the actors and

14:40

how that came about? Yeah, we we

14:42

wanted to work with actors who. Were

14:45

good at both. Comedy. And drama

14:47

but also just. Got. The

14:49

tone that we were going to enter the

14:51

same sensibility. There were two treating this project

14:53

with a lot of respect and not something

14:56

that's done with a wink or that sly

14:58

it's like they were was A and some

of these situations are really funny. but the

creatures themselves the old bike very serious of

the dire served from dire circumstances in life

or death. Yeah. And

so I'm you know we have Jesse Eisenberg in

it and we've known him for a while. We

before but we sent him the script and. He.

Read it and instantly loved the

opportunity to play. This. Type

known for. And just saw the humanity

in this project. and the and the humor.

And Riley was the same way she's done

a lot of really daring roles of. This

was something that both. Very. Original

for us to her and that every

everyone involved really. Took. The

characters and just elevated them to feel

15:46

real low of i was one is

a real people the real creatures he

lived in really I. Have identified

with him never to the and and both of them. You

know what we'd like to add them is are both able

to do comedy and drama and are both very adventurous in

there in the roles they. So I

think that speaks to what drew them.

her time grown up in Oregon and or Dad's

that is different from what we're familiar

turning the script on that in that regard

in the humans are more axel feeling the

impact of humanity and their environment and in

do the cinematography that way in the elements

you've found difficult to do this kind of

film or was it completely natural as it

appears to be in the movie. Technically was

a huge challenge is because of the elements

and these suits their pretty heavy and made

a foam in covered in fur and they

get a little waterlogged with the rain and

18:53

stuff like that with sweat air with or

swear to a are technically we just rolled

with whatever the elements gave us. can. We

were out there to see in that environment and

it was rainy or sunny or of yard. Crazy.

Looking clouds and and fog or if he

had a of attackers sun rays we just

embrace whatever was there he has or as

endeavor a chance to can see like Daves

we just wanted to shoot natural light. so

it's really it's a testament to the creature

team of how hard they work to keep

the prosthetics and plays and the fireplace in

everything feel that much more authentic. Because

we did it that way. I

guess the final question before we get to where

people can see it and how they can see

it is what do you want people to take

away from this film if you had just an

elevator pitch of. Why you made the

film: What You want people to experience, what

they will experience, and what you want to

take away to be From Sasquatch Sunset. From

the audience perspective, if you guys want to

take that individually or be awesome. For.

And I think it also really limits the boundaries of

what that use of art can be, whether it's a

movie or music or a painting or whatever, you're like

put in a box and this is what it is

and it's nothing more than that. For us, we

like something that ideally works on

different levels and creates a dialogue.

It respects the audience and creates a dialogue with

them where they can bring some of their own

thoughts to it. We really like to do this

working on different levels. We're on the surface level.

If it's just a wild time at the movies,

then if people want to join the art level,

that's great by us. But if they want to

20:45

look at some deeper layers to it and what

20:47

it says about our connection to the natural world

and what that means to us individually, then that's

20:51

fantastic too. Yeah, I would

say I'm curious as to

specifically for this podcast, like with the

Bigfoot community, people who are obsessed with

it the same way we are, what they

21:02

think of our interpretation of some of the theories

and how I feel like they'll really enjoy it.

I feel like we're treating them

with the respect, the Bigfoot

with the respect that it deserves and not making it

the butt of some of these. The jerky joke. Yeah,

so we hope different people have different views

on the specific assessments of its behavior, but

we tried our best to have something that

felt, find a certain truthfulness and

legitimacy and respect for the combination of traits

that we put together with them. Yeah, we've

done like a whole range of types of

interviews, but we're very much looking forward to

tell you, I know there's some people pissed
