David Berman, Emeritus Professor in Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin, delivers a lecture titled ""Irish Philosophy: Past and Future"" to mark the launch a major event on the philosophy of Bishop Berkeley in April 2014.In his talk Professor Berman explores a period when Ireland was at the cutting edge of world philosophy. This was the golden age, which was born with Toland’s Christianity not Mysterious (1696), grew with the answers to his challenge from Browne, King and Synge, and culminated with the work of Hutcheson, Burke and especially Berkeley. While great philosophy in Ireland is unlikely, if not impossible, to arise in this way again, Professor Berman suggests that something like it might if we see how each of the two opposing forces has a deeper, inner nature: the one in the philosophy of Toland, the father of Irish philosophy, the other in the philosophy of Berkeley, its greatest son.Speaker:Professor David Berman, Emeritus Professor in Philosophy, Trinity College Dublin http://www.tcd.ie/http://www.tcd.ie/philosophyhttp://www.tcd.ie/ssp
