Judgement and interpretation are common to all methodologies however with quantitative data the methods for transforming observations into data are well recognised. The same cannot be said for qualitative data where often the rules or methods used to convert observations or interviews into conclusions are not usually reported or are only superficially reported, making it difficult to access the adequacy of reported findings. This presentation will draw on data from doctor-patient interviews to illustrate the issues raised and to explore issues of quality in qualitative research.
