As the sun rises higher over Rivendell the Council of Elrond continues. We are taken back to the Last Alliance of Elves and Men and the Battle of Dagorlad in the year 3434 of the Second Age. We hear of the fall of Gil-galad and Elendil; of Sauron’s overthrow by the broken blade of Narsil; and of Isildur’s Bane. Join us as we continue examining Book II, chapter 2 of The Lord of the Rings.

The Council Of Elrond Pt. 2

Elrond addressed the council recalling the glory and fall of Númenor and the return of the Kings of Men to Middle-earth. He spoke of Elendil the Tall and his sons, Isildur and Anárion, and how they became great lords of the North-realm of Arnor, and the South-realm in Gondor. The fall of Gil-galad and Elendil were fresh in his mind because he was the herald of Gil-galad at the Battle of Dagorlad before the Black Gate of Mordor. He was a part of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Indeed his memory stretched all the way back to the Elder Days. Elrond counseled Isildur to cast the One Ring into Orodruin’s fire where it was made. But he would not listen.

“This I will have as weregild for my father, and my brother,” he said; and therefore whether we would or no, he took it to treasure it. But soon he was betrayed by it to his death; and so it is named in the North Isildur’s Bane.
