imagePhil Nellis joins us from drizzle drenched Seattle, though he claims the sun was shining. He describes how growing up in Mexico shaped how he prepares sermons, why he finds great value in the lectionary study group he helped form, and how his preparation varies one Sunday a month for a community midrash rather than a sermon.

About Phil

Previously from Chicago & Oaxaca, Mexico, I moved to Seattle with my wife Ruth in 2004 to pursue MDiv studies at The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. I’ve been a part of the Wits’ End Church community since 2005, serving first as a pastoral intern and then as the director of worship arts before receiving the call to pastor in this place in 2009. Since coming to Seattle, we have grown our family by three boys- Sylas, Judah and Ezra.

I enjoy making things out of wood, playing frisbee golf, tromping through the forest with my sons, the absurd, vinyl records, theology desde abajo, walks with my beloved, most things artisanal and sitting by a fire with a good conversation partner.

Ruth and I are passionate about living simply, creatively and intentionally in community on our urban homestead. Alongside my work in this community, I teach adjunct classes in theology and do bit of free-lance artwork.
