Prior to the 1930s, women had only served in the United States Senate as a sign of respect to the widowed wives of senators until a special election could be held. Then Hattie Wyatt Caraway came along and decided to "try out my own theory of a woman running for office." She was soon one of the most respected voices in U.S. government.
