RATING
Extremely entertaining, though not as groundbreaking as it claims. The sound design is rich, all-encompassing and wraps you in a thick blanket of cinematic sound. The acting is superb and really convincing. But the story becomes a bit hollow compared to what I'd expect. Somehow I would have loved the voice to be futuristic technology, OR Wallace to have a better motive to do what he did. Little inconsistencies (like having to run and sing with a broken rib) and a story that is a bit on the thin side, does not however overshadow the fact that this is overall an amazing show. It's just the hype and the glory from Limetown made me expect something truly unique, and though great, it does not get to be that
I agree with the others who note that it's not quite as groundbreaking as it claims and there are a few questions when it comes to the writing and the plot, but that it's a totally fun ride. There's a good suspense to the show, and I enjoyed how the plot twists drew out the backstory and the character of Wallace, revealing him to be the perfect pawn for this dark game.
Firstly, the marketing that bills this as a first of its kind feature length audio movie is easily disproven. No, this show is not even close to being the first of anything. For example, Cerberus Rex by Sci-Fi Presents was a feature length audio movie released in 2017 and was nominated for a Webby Award. Maybe Two-Up will invent a wheel or fire next and say that they are the first ones to do so.Shipworm itself is a thematically hollow ride, a bunch of ideas that never comes together. If it’s meant to be an exploration of mental illness, then it is not set up to cover the topic thoughtfully. Mental illness is exploited as a plot engine here, and the depiction is stereotypically Hollywood-superficial. If Shipworm is meant to be a character study, then the final scene completely undercuts the protagonist’s comments about taking responsibility for some pretty horrific actions. For the sake of a cheap “Or is it” twist, the writers sacrificed any thematic coherence here. That said, the actors are fantastic and they do what they can with the muddled script.
This is a masterpiece of a podcast, with so many layers! I listened to the whole thing on a two-hour hike and stumbled a few times as I was so focused on the podcast. The plot, the acting and the music are all amazing. I'm still not sure why Wallace Conway was chosen for this assignment - if that's what really happened - but it doesn't matter. This would be a good movie.
Interesting but I found myself annoyed with the protagonist at times
There's a lot to love about this show. It's exceedingly well produced, has top-notch actors, and is complete with a single file. Yes. That's right. A single, almost 2-hour long audio file. Makes listening pretty easy!
I really liked the production of "Shipworm". This was a real cinematic experience for the ears, drawing me into the story completely. The sound production was top notch, and the voice acting was superb. If you like completely immersive audio drama, "Shipworm" will take you to another world.
Interesting story and engaging the whole time. Quick one and done.
