1:03
Today I wanted to discuss a
1:05
few things related to eating for
1:08
long term health tying in areas
1:10
where the too long jeopardy because
1:13
over this past weekend I had
1:15
the privilege of presenting at the
1:17
Sports Nutrition Association conference and my
1:20
A presentation was essentially to take
1:22
this concept which has become pop
1:24
realize certain on the internet and
1:27
in social media about diet as
1:29
well as other types of strategies
1:32
that can increase. Longevity or that
1:34
can make us live longer. Or.
1:36
That you see these bio hackers using
1:39
and that's are a range of different
1:41
interventions. Ice A in the field of
1:43
nutrition fasting has become one of those
1:45
as well as certain compounds and supplements
1:47
can help you increase your life span
1:49
beyond what we thought was normal heart.
1:51
These are some of the claims are
1:54
the some A very surfer several get
1:56
into more specifics in a bit. But.
1:59
Seen as that, there's. What a buzz around
2:01
that on social media. And many nutrition
2:03
press professionals may have people coming to them
2:05
that have seen these things on, are interested
2:07
or who maybe even want to discuss these
2:10
in a more evidence based way. That.
2:12
Was the initial opening of
2:14
the idea of this lecture.
2:17
Was. What types of claimed the receiving
2:19
really? Are those types of claims? Number
2:21
one accurate but more so are the
2:23
even asking the right question. And.
2:25
Beyond that, what is a better
2:27
way for us to conceptualize the
2:29
idea of what we should do
2:31
with our diet if we are
2:33
concerned with leading a long, healthy
2:35
life. And. So that was
2:37
the essential. Thrust, Of the
2:39
idea. Now. There's no shortage
2:42
of various claims and to he
2:44
just go tied to any this
2:46
into google or you tube. you
2:48
see those with the biggest number
2:51
of views on Youtube clips or
2:53
social media posts. Are. Referring
2:55
to bio hackers that are spending
2:57
literally millions of dollars. On
2:59
all sorts of protocols have come up
3:01
with. Literally hundreds of pills
3:03
a day. Some of them are
3:06
promoting really long fasts either extends
3:08
fast or every day having like
3:10
an eighteen hour window, or some
3:13
of them claiming that they are
3:15
going to be extending their lifespan
3:17
not only beyond what is normal.
3:20
But. What is even been seen in
3:22
humans to this point? as at some
3:24
of the more outlandish claims you see,
3:27
On a less outlandish I'd you also
3:29
see people talking about various types of.
3:32
Dietary. Protocols. Supplementation.
3:35
Except for that has an ability
3:37
to extend life so to get
3:40
us as an individual. To.
3:42
Move beyond the a typical
3:44
median. That said, the average
3:46
age or or life expectancy
3:48
through doing these things. Are.
3:50
Certainly prevent us succumbing to
3:52
death before this point. So.
3:54
Really, there's a number of different
3:57
claims that we could think about.
3:59
Basically broad, we think of different
4:01
buckets. In. Relation to Die At
4:03
least there can be ones that are
4:05
specific on a type of eating that
4:07
going to leave. To.
4:09
A longer life through certain mechanisms
4:12
that have been described. so for
4:14
example, In. This butter I would
4:16
play something like fasting. And
4:18
there's something like a chain of
4:20
events were through fasting. you. ramp
4:22
up this process of atop a
4:24
g. And. Through that that's
4:26
going to lead you to live
4:29
longer so we can look at
4:31
that. Such a degree of dietary
4:33
restriction that will transfer into increase
4:35
longevity is a that claim. Then.
4:37
There are others that for me about
4:39
specific compounds that we can find in
4:41
certain foods I think when the most
4:43
popular at least that was from the
4:45
nineties, the two thousand and so on.
4:48
Whether his initial buzz about it and
4:50
he's meeting wise was something like resveratrol
4:52
which we find the red wine. And.
4:54
Talking about how certain compounds have been
4:56
demonstrated to have an effect on particular
4:58
pathway in the body. And. So
5:01
if you consume these compounds
5:03
either in farmers to logical
5:05
dos or through foods or
5:08
drinks. That. Can have some sort of.
5:10
Aging. Reversal of it for like a better
5:12
term. And then there's another
5:14
bucket where people will. Be.
5:17
Really afraid of certain compounds are in
5:19
foods. And. This
5:22
usually ties in with are these compounds
5:24
are found within foods that you've been
5:26
told are healthy for. You would affect
5:28
their slowly killing you. See.
5:31
What you need to do is follow a special
5:33
very restrictive diet. And yet
5:35
they desire occur and narrow band of
5:37
claims. but it might be that there's
5:39
a certain compounds. In.
5:41
Vegetables for example of are in lagoons
5:44
that are slowly killing you. So if
5:46
you switch over to something like it
5:48
kind of or diet through this then
5:50
you are not going to succumb to
5:52
death early and you can live longer
5:55
healthier life. But beyond that some of
5:57
them even get into more things of
5:59
of. how that could increase your
6:01
lifespan beyond what is typical.
6:04
Now it's probably worth noting that there are
6:07
a few different terms that get
6:09
used differently, but when we're thinking about
6:11
some of the language that is used,
6:13
it's worth having maybe some definitions in
6:16
mind, at least how I've categorized them.
6:18
And we also have a nice sigma
6:20
statement looking at some of the aspects
6:22
of fasting, where we give
6:24
a more precise description of some of these
6:27
terms. We can have within
6:29
the field of longevity, this term,
6:32
we can think of longevity on both
6:34
an individual level and then a species
6:36
level. So on the species level, this
6:38
is just the period of time that
6:41
a member of that species would be
6:43
expected to live under typical conditions, let's
6:45
say. And so when we're talking about
6:47
the longevity of a certain
6:49
type of animal, or if we're
6:51
talking about even humans, we
6:54
would say at the species level, there's
6:56
a typical life expectancy under normal conditions.
6:59
But most often what is being referred to in some
7:01
of these claims that we're talking about is maybe on
7:03
an individual level. So for an
7:05
individual's longevity, it relates to that individual's
7:07
ability to survive past the average age
7:09
of death. So if we take the
7:12
median age of death in
7:15
that particular species, so let's take humans,
7:17
and we would also take, based on their demographics,
7:19
we would have a typical average
7:22
age of death within this
7:24
particular type of population. And
7:26
then we can look at what
7:28
is an individual's capability
7:30
or possibility of going beyond that
7:32
average age. This would describe some
7:34
degree of longevity. And so
7:37
one of those terms that sometimes crops
7:39
up in literature is exceptional longevity, which
7:41
is typically defined as surviving
7:44
and living independently at an
7:46
age of 95 and older. And
7:49
when you see this type of
7:51
longevity, this exceptional longevity of living
7:53
independently beyond the age of 95,
7:56
for example, this is strongly genetic,
7:58
which we will return back to
8:00
but typically that is going to be in
8:05
many of these situations. Now
8:07
