Welcome to Episode 8 of Slightly Evolved! Our guest is Dr Germán Orizaola, an associate researcher at Uppsala University. The Chernobyl incident was one of the worst disasters of the 20th century. The area was rapidly evacuated and since 1986 the "exclusion zone" surrounding former power plant has been largely free of humans. Germán tells us about his research within the exclusion zone and that far from being a radioactive wasteland, the area has been remarkably reclaimed by nature. We discuss his work on studying the effects of radiation of the local frog community, his life outside of research, and how he feels strongly about keeping a work-life balance. As always you can contact us via email (
