From luminary,

1:18

you've crossed over

1:21

to spooked. Even

1:29

now,

1:30

There is still such a thing as a

1:32

keeper,

1:34

a bard, a remember, one

1:36

who collects the stories to the rest

1:38

of us. will not forget. Today,

1:43

we have such a person.

2:03

Spoke stars.

2:08

now.

2:59

For some, encountering

3:01

the supernatural is a once in a lifetime

3:03

experience. There

3:05

are those who never encountered

3:08

the other lands at all. Before

3:11

few, The veil

3:13

from our world and the beyond

3:16

is more negotiable. You've

3:19

heard from our next story teller, Lipakha, back

3:21

in

3:21

season five. And

3:23

now, he's back.

3:26

He grew up in Honolulu. And as a child,

3:28

his best friend was a kid named

3:30

on, they were tight, compadres,

3:34

the family you make,

3:36

and they thought that nothing

3:38

could ever mess

3:40

with their bond.

4:08

Sean and I actually met in junior

4:10

high school. Monday

4:12

after classes were walking to

4:15

lunch. I saw two kids knocking

4:17

down and take his lunch, and I I

4:19

went after

4:19

them.

4:21

And we got into an altercation and

4:23

the three of us got sent to the office. The

4:27

following day, Right

4:29

before class, I was standing at the snack

4:31

machine and I was about to put in a quarter

4:33

and this hand comes over my shoulder and puts

4:35

in a quarter. I

4:38

turned around and had fun. He

4:40

says, that's for yesterday.

4:44

And that's how our friendship started.

4:49

A lot of times, we jumped

4:51

on the bus when to go see a cinema.

4:53

we would go to the

4:56

shopping mall. And just

4:58

hang out, have fun, you know, be like brothers.

5:02

or go to the same martial

5:04

arts classes together and get scolding

5:06

from our sensei for talking, you

5:08

know, when we were actually supposed to be listening.

5:10

It

5:12

was a fun friendship, and

5:14

when we had disagreements, it

5:17

would always devolve into the fits

5:19

of laughter.

5:23

So it's March nineteen

5:24

eighty and seventeen.

5:27

It's my senior year in high school.

5:30

One day, on a whim, myself

5:33

and Sean invited our other

5:35

friends had to cut out

5:37

a score.

5:37

Ted picked

5:40

this up

5:40

in his father's old Ford galaxy

5:42

right in front of the

5:43

school.

5:44

The first place we go to is

5:47

an old drive in called diners,

5:50

and we get more cheeseburgers than

5:52

we need.

5:52

more french fries than are necessary.

5:56

And we made a pit stop at this

5:58

other school to go

5:59

and get a touch girlfriend Tracy.

6:04

After

6:04

we get Ted's girlfriend from the high school,

6:06

we're heading out in

6:07

the freeway. We're

6:09

gonna go to a place called the pulley lookout.

6:13

Just to go and hang out

6:15

In

6:18

Hawaiian, the word poly means cliff,

6:20

and it's a historical place that divides

6:23

the windward and leerid side of the

6:25

island. As

6:28

we take the cutoff to go

6:30

to the poly lookout, we're

6:32

heading up into the mountains. and

6:34

further up we go less there is

6:36

of urbanization. Old

6:39

southern plantation type houses. sprawling

6:43

estates, abandoned

6:45

mansions.

6:45

Until

6:48

finally, it's just verdant

6:51

green, stunning.

6:54

You

6:55

can see waterfalls coming

6:57

down the mountain. And

6:59

so finally, there's the cutoff going to the right,

7:02

and you come out to this breathtaking lookout.

7:10

The second week parked there,

7:12

Tracy and Ted start making out

7:14

heavily, and it's uncomfortable.

7:17

So

7:18

Sean and I get out of the car

7:21

and we go walking toward the lookout.

7:25

the lookout is sort of on a rise

7:28

and there's just Blue

7:30

Ocean everywhere.

7:33

Mountain's so high that the

7:35

clouds practically

7:37

rest right on top of it. the

7:40

old Hawaiian say that clouds like

7:42

that are sort of like flower glaze

7:44

around a person's neck. We're

7:47

just taking it all in.

7:50

I looked to my right and I see that

7:53

there's a path going further down

7:55

from the lookout.

7:56

It's overgrown.

7:59

plants and grass.

8:02

Sean and I decide to take that

8:03

path. Just

8:06

check it out, see where it goes, where it takes

8:08

us. As

8:11

we're heading down there, there is wind

8:14

and it's breaking the the fragrance

8:16

of the ginger plants toward us. and

8:18

we inhale and it's just beautiful.

8:22

It's a very sweet, heavy smell.

8:26

And it's strangely

8:28

quiet. We're by ourselves.

8:31

The winds got stronger the

8:33

further we want.

8:34

It

8:37

actually mutes out the sound of traffic.

8:39

It's like the place belongs

8:42

to the wind. and nothing else

8:44

outside that exists.

8:45

And

8:47

then all of a sudden,

8:51

no

8:51

noise. I

8:53

could

8:53

see the wind doing what it does,

8:56

moving

8:56

the tall grass and

8:58

the tall ginger plants.

9:01

But I

9:03

couldn't hear

9:04

it, and I

9:06

couldn't feel

9:07

it. I'm

9:10

confused, and then

9:13

we hear girl's

9:15

voice. calling

9:17

Sean's name.

9:26

At first,

9:29

Shawn and I thought it

9:31

was Ted, and

9:33

it somehow it actually followed us

9:35

or snuck behind us as

9:37

we're coming down this path. But

9:40

the voice sounded like

9:42

it was right in front of us. It

9:45

couldn't have been Ted. As

9:49

we're sort of looking at each other for confirmation,

9:52

the voice continues. Sure.

10:00

Sure. then

10:01

it began shouting

10:03

his name in, like, rapid

10:06

succession.

10:10

The voice went crazy. It

10:13

sounds like someone who's

10:16

just absolutely

10:17

unhedged. I'm

10:23

terrified. Absolutely terrified.

10:28

It begins to make all the prickly

10:30

hairs on my body's hand up.

10:33

Sean is

10:35

frozen to the spot. His shoulders

10:38

are hunched up to his ears, and his

10:40

eyes are rapidly moving back and

10:42

forth.

10:42

It

10:45

was

10:45

overwhelming.

10:48

It was so random that I

10:50

wasn't sure what was gonna happen. Was it

10:52

gonna faint? Was it gonna

10:54

cry?

10:56

or was the thing

10:58

associated with this voice gonna show up

11:00

and and do something to us?

11:03

kill us maybe.

11:04

But

11:08

then

11:09

the voice stops.

11:12

It's just

11:13

suddenly quiet and I thought

11:16

it was over. You know,

11:18

it's done. and we

11:20

can go.

11:23

My intent was to tell Sean, let's

11:25

let's go. Let's just get that whole lot

11:27

of here. then

11:30

Sean and I hear

11:31

you.

11:34

It

11:37

just says it once. and

11:40

it's like

11:41

a knife piercing right through

11:43

me except

11:45

this is not pain. This

11:47

is

11:50

fear.

11:52

I'm

11:53

standing with my back toward

11:56

the freeway. And Sean

11:58

is standing with his back

11:59

toward the high

12:00

ginger plants. We're

12:04

facing each other. It's only

12:06

a couple of seconds. And

12:09

then without warning, he

12:11

puts his chin down to his chest.

12:14

shoulders up, elbows out, and in

12:16

a flash,

12:16

he tackles me, knocks

12:20

me to the ground. and

12:22

I remember my head hitting the pavement

12:26

that he took off running. He

12:28

just took off and left

12:31

me there. to the

12:32

mercy of whatever this thing

12:34

was that called our names.

12:38

Fortunately,

12:38

I

12:40

was too scared to be hurt. It's

12:42

all that adrenaline going on now. Even

12:46

though I was scraped up

12:48

and bleeding, It just

12:50

I had to get out of there. I had to go because

12:52

there's this boiling feeling

12:54

in me that if I don't

12:56

leave I will die.

12:58

No one will ever see me again.

13:01

I get up

13:03

and right after Shawn.

13:06

I'm angry, I'm

13:08

pissed, and I'm scared. When

13:12

I catch up to Sean. I

13:14

grabbed him by the collar of his shirt. I

13:16

yanked him backwards, and I just

13:18

started wailing on him. It

13:21

wasn't that he tackled me. It was

13:24

after everything we've

13:26

been through as as best friends.

13:29

He

13:32

abandoned me. He left

13:34

me. He

13:36

ran.

13:39

and he started to fight

13:41

back.

13:42

Ted saw it, and

13:45

he had to come and break it up.

13:47

He'd push me aside and

13:51

point it to this wall at

13:53

the lookout. And he said,

13:55

you sit there right now. Don't

13:58

move.

13:59

And he bought shot into the car,

14:02

and he came back and got me.

14:05

And he didn't say it as

14:07

we're paving the lookout, but

14:09

he gave us this look like you

14:11

just ruined this day for me.

14:14

This was supposed to be odd about

14:16

us breaking out, getting away.

14:20

The two of

14:20

you just screwed it up.

14:22

In

14:27

the days after that, Sean

14:29

and I would see each other in

14:31

school. We just

14:33

walk the other way.

14:37

There

14:38

a

14:39

couple of times where Ashley picked up

14:41

the phone and started to dial

14:43

his number and

14:45

just hung up. and just thought to myself,

14:47

why bother? We're just gonna

14:49

rehash this whole thing again. It'll become another

14:51

argument. It wasn't

14:53

worth it.

14:56

I run into Ted

14:59

during the break between two classes

15:02

near our hangout, which was

15:04

the soda machine.

15:06

And

15:06

I

15:07

started to explain to Ted about

15:09

what happened. Ted

15:12

the

15:13

is Puerto Rican

15:15

kid from New York.

15:18

Highly highly Catholic. and

15:20

saw him explaining this to him. He looks at me. He

15:22

says, I'll get out of here. I don't wanna hear

15:24

that. You

15:24

guys had a hallucination.

15:27

you're just gonna make up this story

15:29

to to scare me?

15:31

He didn't believe

15:33

what we told him. and

15:35

that hurts.

15:36

Sean

15:40

and I don't talk after that. graduation,

15:43

birthdays, all

15:46

those things that Sean and

15:49

I did. places we

15:51

went to, movies we

15:53

watched. None of

15:55

that.

15:55

There's no communication.

16:00

The rest of my senior year,

16:02

it was really difficult to sleep at

16:04

night. The second

16:06

had got dark, and

16:08

the ambient sounds of life

16:10

go away. That's when

16:12

it all comes back. I

16:15

had this fear that whatever that was at

16:17

the polling lookout was gonna be

16:19

waiting for me was gonna show up

16:21

to finish the job.

16:24

but it never

16:27

happened.

16:29

Doctor

16:31

High School, Sean and I

16:33

lost

16:34

touch. I

16:36

also developed this thing we

16:38

call in Hawaii rock fever.

16:40

I had to get off the rock.

16:43

I had to go travel,

16:45

see the world, you know, do things,

16:48

see things meet new people.

16:50

Sean

16:52

pumped into my head every

16:54

now and again, but the thought

16:56

of ever picking up the

16:58

phone never crosses my mind. As

17:01

far as I feel it's it's done.

17:03

eventually

17:07

and come back

17:09

to Honolulu home. What's

17:13

March? Two thousand and

17:15

six.

17:15

It's been twenty six

17:18

years since that day at

17:20

the lookout. I'm at

17:22

home,

17:22

and the phone rings.

17:24

And so I pick

17:25

it up. Hello. And

17:29

the

17:29

voice on the other

17:31

side of the phone says,

17:34

Lupica. Thanks a guest.

17:36

Then the reply

17:37

is, This is Sean. When

17:41

I

17:41

hear his voice, I

17:44

lied. I lied to him and I

17:46

said, dude, where

17:48

have you been? I tried

17:51

contacting you years ago, but you just you

17:53

you fell off the map. So

17:55

what's up, man? He

17:59

says, Take

17:59

down this address and

18:02

meet me there tomorrow for lunch. At

18:04

noon. It's the

18:07

address for his own house where

18:09

I hung out a lot more often

18:11

than I did at my own house.

18:14

a place called Pupu Kupa

18:17

in an area called

18:20

Waipahu. And then click,

18:22

it hangs

18:23

up. I don't

18:25

know what

18:26

to think. I don't

18:28

know if I actually really want

18:30

to go or

18:33

if I just wanna blow it off and

18:35

just not have anything to do with

18:37

it.

18:40

But the

18:40

next day, I'm getting

18:42

dressed, putting my shoes on, and

18:44

I'm in the car,

18:47

and and I'm on

18:48

my way.

18:49

I can't

18:56

really say why I went Maybe

18:58

I needed closure.

19:00

As I'm driving along,

19:03

these memories just kept popping

19:05

than my head about me and Sean and Ted hanging

19:08

out and having these greasy

19:10

french fries, these great cheeseburgers.

19:13

be soft drinks with the crushed ice.

19:15

And just the excitement of, you

19:17

know, trying to talk to the girl we like

19:20

and stuff like that. And

19:23

before I know it, I am pulling up in front

19:25

of Sean's place. Sean's

19:28

house is just

19:30

the way it way back in

19:32

nineteen eighty, almost as

19:35

if it was

19:37

stuck in time. this

19:40

two story magic book house.

19:42

It's one of

19:44

those houses that has Christmas

19:47

decorations all year long.

19:51

Sean opens the door.

19:52

He looks

19:54

the same same body

19:55

type, the same frame.

19:58

Just

19:58

little flecks of gray hair

19:59

on the side and on the top,

20:02

but it was it

20:04

was still shine.

20:06

There's no

20:08

expression.

20:10

No smile. You

20:13

didn't offer me a a brother how

20:15

you've been, long time no c.

20:17

No brother brother handshake. No

20:19

no hug. And for

20:22

me, if it's not

20:25

being offered, I in turn will not offer or

20:27

initiate.

20:30

Sean

20:30

turned around and walked toward the

20:32

patio, and

20:33

I followed him. He turned

20:35

on the interior

20:37

lights. So those neon lights that make that

20:39

sound first, that buzzing sound before they actually

20:41

go on, they sort

20:43

of crackle. And that's when he

20:45

went and sat behind the table and and

20:47

gestured to the chair, which I sat

20:49

in.

20:50

There was no

20:52

conversation No

20:54

words.

20:56

Just complete silence.

20:59

The

21:00

patio's pretty big. very

21:04

spacious. It's where we

21:06

used to hang out a lot.

21:08

Sean had a pool table. He

21:11

had foosball. The colors were bright. I

21:13

remember that, but now it's just

21:17

it's blooming and The

21:19

only thing that's there is just the table

21:22

between me and Sean, and there's

21:24

nothing

21:25

else. And

21:28

then he said, do you

21:30

remember

21:30

that day when we cut out

21:33

of school? and we

21:35

went to the pulley lookout, and we walked

21:37

down that road. They

21:41

said,

21:41

yeah. I remember. I

21:43

remember that

21:44

time when

21:47

we

21:47

heard that voice calling my name.

21:50

and then it called your

21:52

name. And

21:58

then he said,

22:00

I knocked you down.

22:02

I tackled you.

22:04

Did you remember

22:06

that? I

22:08

said yes. I

22:10

remember.

22:12

He said,

22:14

after the

22:15

voice called your name, This

22:17

Hawaiian girl appeared behind

22:20

you.

22:21

She had

22:22

long black hair,

22:24

Her skin was very

22:27

pale. She had

22:29

no clothes on.

22:32

Her fingers wrapped around

22:35

your shoulder,

22:37

and her face

22:40

slowly emerges. and

22:44

her

22:44

eyes roll over black

22:48

in a

22:48

black four ton. came

22:52

out of her mouth.

22:54

She

22:55

was gonna take you.

22:58

So that's why I tackled you and pushed

23:00

you out of the way.

23:04

Sean

23:06

tells me that The entire

23:09

week after

23:09

that thing happened at the

23:11

pulley lookout, that Hawaiian

23:15

girl would appear outside his

23:17

bedroom window every

23:18

night, and she'd knock on

23:20

the glass.

23:22

He'd open the curtain and she

23:24

would point to

23:25

the hook that held the

23:28

screen to the windowsill, indicating

23:30

every night that week that she wanted

23:33

him to let her

23:35

in. In each

23:37

night, he would shake his head at her

23:39

saying no. At the

23:41

end of the week,

23:44

finally, after

23:45

refusing to let her in,

23:47

she took her

23:50

pointer finger, pressed it up

23:52

against the screen,

23:54

and rubbed

23:55

it across the length of the screen. And as she did

23:58

that, the hook that was

23:59

holding the screens of the windowsill

24:01

slowly Slowly

24:05

came out. Then she

24:08

pulled the screen back,

24:10

flipped to the glass, and

24:13

climbed into his bedroom.

24:18

And he

24:19

said, I don't remember anything

24:21

after she climbed

24:22

in, but the

24:24

next thing

24:25

I know,

24:27

it's morning.

24:27

the morning I'm

24:29

waking up. I'm

24:31

having my coffee,

24:33

but something is very

24:35

very off. It's just

24:37

different.

24:39

I haven't

24:40

been the same.

24:43

I was so

24:46

pissed. I just couldn't believe he

24:48

bought me there to tell

24:51

me this this ridiculous

24:55

story.

24:55

Then he asked me

24:57

something really

24:58

strange.

25:00

He sort of

25:00

glanced around with just his eyes.

25:03

And he said, you notice

25:04

how well that this

25:06

patio is?

25:08

And I said,

25:09

yes. It's kinda

25:11

bright. And then he pointed to

25:13

the right corner of the

25:15

patio behind him. And he

25:18

said, but have

25:18

you also noticed

25:19

that shadow in the corner?

25:23

And I look, in the

25:25

direction where he's pointing, and in that corner is

25:29

a shadow. The

25:32

outline

25:32

is definitely human.

25:34

but with no

25:37

features, no detail in

25:39

anything. And the

25:43

bright neon lights in that

25:46

patio is not

25:49

penetrating that shadow. That shadow

25:51

exists there. and of

25:53

itself, despite or in spite of

25:55

the light.

25:57

I'm thinking, what

25:59

is that? And

26:02

he

26:03

said, that's

26:06

her.

26:06

Sean

26:10

said, you're not the same person

26:12

you were back then, not

26:14

to look out, but

26:17

I am.

26:20

Something about

26:20

me hasn't changed from

26:22

that day.

26:23

She's been with

26:25

me ever

26:26

since. he

26:29

put his

26:29

head down.

26:31

He was crying, and he didn't want me

26:33

to see, I guess.

26:36

I realized Sean

26:39

isn't making it up.

26:40

He said,

26:44

why he told me now? After all

26:46

these years, why tell me now?

26:49

But

26:51

he's waving me off. he's

26:53

just telling me that that's all there is.

26:55

There's no more to talk about. He

26:58

just wanted me to

27:00

leave So

27:03

I get up,

27:05

I

27:05

walk out of the

27:08

door, and I

27:10

leave. I'm

27:12

walking

27:13

to the car, there's this huge

27:15

knot in my stomach.

27:17

It's like survivors killed.

27:19

I started to

27:20

feel like it should have been

27:23

me. But

27:26

It's also a relief, a great weight

27:28

off my shoulders. To

27:32

know, that in Sean's

27:34

own words, he did not abandon

27:37

me, but that he saved

27:39

me.

27:43

One

27:47

day,

27:47

I got a call from my mom and

27:50

she says, There's some things that I

27:52

wanna pass on, that I I

27:54

wanna teach. So all these things that I

27:56

know that I've learned culturally and

27:58

spiritually, and I I wanna pass it on. I'm

28:00

sitting in her

28:02

living room on the cold

28:04

concrete floor. She's sitting on the

28:06

old Retan chair, and next to her is

28:09

her cousin. antiella. It's

28:11

about

28:11

one o'clock in the morning and

28:13

it's

28:13

quiet and there's soft light.

28:16

The

28:17

lesson is about fixing

28:19

spirits inside of a broken person.

28:21

And so

28:22

the atmosphere, while we're talking

28:24

about this and while she's explaining what

28:26

that was all about is very,

28:29

very potent.

28:32

And I decided

28:32

to mention to her about the thing that happened

28:34

with Sean and my self at the

28:36

poly lookout. I didn't shirt

28:38

when I

28:39

was younger with

28:42

my mama because I wasn't sure she

28:45

would understand,

28:47

but

28:47

the more she taught me, the more

28:50

things opened up. That

28:51

seemed like the moment to

28:53

talk about it.

28:56

I didn't give her all the

28:56

details right down

28:58

to the fight and

29:00

there's a pause. And

29:03

she says, just matter frankly,

29:06

oh, that was a more over

29:08

her name. She

29:10

is

29:10

the guardian of that path. at

29:12

the lookout.

29:16

Traditionally, more over

29:18

takes a young man

29:20

as a companion or as a meal.

29:22

But either way, the

29:24

young man loses his

29:27

life, and the

29:29

way in which she

29:32

seduces him entices him is

29:34

by calling out his

29:36

name. But

29:38

my

29:38

mama said never

29:40

to the face. though she

29:42

called out always from

29:45

behind or

29:45

from a place where she cannot be seen.

29:51

when

29:51

I hear that from my mama, I

29:54

get goosebumps, and I

29:56

start to tear

29:58

up. It was very

29:59

intense that, you know, a name was

30:02

now attached to this thing that happened to

30:04

us. And

30:05

it wasn't just some random malevolent

30:08

force, it was there for a

30:10

purpose.

30:11

I didn't

30:12

cause it.

30:14

I remember

30:16

asking my mama after

30:19

that. How

30:20

come I survived?

30:21

And she said

30:24

to

30:24

me,

30:25

if it was your

30:28

time to have

30:30

been taken, he wouldn't

30:31

be here.

30:32

Even though

30:35

I no

30:37

longer keep in touch but Sean,

30:39

I feel grateful.

30:41

Here's a

30:42

guy who was my

30:45

brother, who

30:47

took one

30:49

for me. and

30:49

sacrificed a part of himself so

30:51

that I could go on. Because
