Hailing from Castel Hill in the Bronx, Jay Griffy saw a lot of movement with his family as they struggled to live the American dream finally settling in New Jersey when Jay Griffy was a teenager. Part of a strong movement known as JMW, Most Wanted in Jersey, it was this state that helped shape his sound while New York created his power. Growing up listening to tracks like “The Bridge is Over†and artists such as Eric B., Rakim, Kurtis Blow, DMX, and Run DMC, his musical career clearly started as a child in New York. Not only through listening but learning to play instruments like the piano. It was not long before Jay Griffy was getting notoriety online and started catching the attention of artists on the West Coast like St. Laz. It quickly became apparent that Jay Griffy’s strength not only was in writing lyrics but assembling full tracks including strong hook writing and uncanny beat selection. Then in 2010, Marlin Barrier head of the Sound Barrier Experience, a live multi-faceted band in Philadelphia, heard Jay Griffy. In a rare perfect moment, Jay Griffy got on stage with the Sound Barrier experience and it was of no surprise that Barrier asked Jay Griffy to stay as part of the band. The recent release of his debut album “Gawd Like” has gained over 500k streams.
