For as long as I can remember, I’ve been absolutely fascinated with mixtapes.  We’re not talking about a rag tag collection of tracks prominently featuring would-be Rappers and vocalists, poorly transitioned from one tune to the next, of the variety that resemble what has become the modern day artist demo.

I’m referring to DJs — cutting, scratching, infectious intros, live at that legendary rave, world premieres before that album dropped, extended multi-minute blends, double-drops, triple-drops, FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY — showcasing an ability to coherently program an audible narrative over the span of an hour plus using the freshest underground sounds they had personally selected.

DJ Hype, Bad Boy Bill, Roc Raida, DJ Sneak, Marty McFly, Hatiras, Dave Cooper, DJ Green Lantern, Mystical Influence, Freaky Flow, Jelo, DJ Craig G — these were some of the names littered across the covers of Tapes and CDs I listened to tirelessly, carefully taking notes on how those whom I considered to be the turntable masters constructed these classic musical journeys.

Any DJ will tell you, live performances are the epitome of our chosen craft.  I’m very much a maverick in that sense; recording well thought-out, calculated, executed with precision studio mixes are what drove me to save up and purchase a pair of Technics 1200s just over a decade and a half ago.

So here it is; what I consider the most important mix I have recorded to date — my first recorded studio session in 4 (!) years, a mix that I had literally dropped everything to complete, and a project which reaffirmed to me on a personal level that I still have the passion and drive to share the music I love.  Special thanks to the Sound Advice team (Matt Rose, P.Bunn, Cynikal Mindset, DJ Rood, and Goldstein) and my soon to be wife (3 more weeks!?!?!?) for the support, creative energy, and inspiration they have provided me.  I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out, and it is my sincerest hope you all enjoy listening to this mix as much as I enjoyed putting it together.
