Well, here we are. It’s a beautiful Sunday evening, and I just got home from a lovely trip to Helen, Georgia. I went up to watch the Florida game with my grandad who like me, is a die-hard Vol. We both bleed Orange and White, and we both were excited about the matchup against the Gators. The sole reason I am even writing this piece is to A) vent about how AWFUL our head coach is, and B) to VENT ABOUT HOW DAMN AWFUL OUR HEAD COACH IS.
Let me just say one thing: I’m not surprised. Not in the least. What the heck should we expect in year five from Butch Jones? Oh, wait, a lot. This is the guy who lives his life on crappy catchphrases like “DAT WAY”, and “Brick By Brick.” Here’s where it gets interesting. We have determination. From our players. We have an attitude. From our players. Hell, we even have toughness. From our players. And we have bricks. John Kelly is a brick. Daniel Bituli is a brick. Justin Martin is a brick. A shitty brick, but he’s a brick. But when you have bricks, they do you no good when you don’t have mortar.
Our coaching staff is supposed to be the mortar. And they suck. As a Tennessee fan, I am sick and tired of seeing what Butch Jones talks about so much, be wasted. He’s right, these players do have five-star hearts. They showed that yesterday. But the heart needs blood, or else it’s useless. After all the great recruiting classes, Butch still can’t win a single big game outright (We aren’t counting last years Georgia game because that was sheer luck).
Dear Butch, when you are on Florida’s HALF YARD LINE, you A) DO NOT line up in the shotgun, and B) DO NOT throw the ball. At least now more than once. One jump ball to Marquez Callaway is perfectly acceptable. He’s a beast. But if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. When you have a guy in the backfield like John Kelly, you let him run the ball. I might as well call him Marshawn Lynch.
We had the ability to win the game here, and you instead tried throwing to a true freshman on a quick slant route against Florida’s best cover corner. Should Josh Palmer have stopped, no! As a receiver, you are taught to shield the DB. You get inside him. As a quarterback, you’re taught to hit your guy on that quick slant right in the numbers. Duke Dawson would have had no shot had those two ELEMENTARY concepts been executed.
But if we’re being honest, why the hell was that play even called? John Kelly should have gotten the football on that drive. Even if you would not have scored, at least you did what ANYBODY that knows football would have done. Heck, even a QB sneak would have done the trick. But throwing the ball? C’mon Butch. Does your chart not tell you to run the ball from the half yard line?
This also is an elementary concept taught by most pee-wee and high school coaches. You NEVER let an offensive player get behind you in the secondary. EVER. Why Nigel Warrior or Micah Abernathy was not on the goal line is beyond me. Again, it’s on the coaching. Or should I say, the guy standing there with the new watch that he added to the collection earlier this week on his shopping spree? That guy.
All in all, I’m sick of Butch Jones. Done with him. Tennessee deserves so much better than this. There are way too many five-star hearts standing on our sideline for an incompetent dummy to be ruining it. We have great players. I even think we have some solid position coaches. But the head guy has got to go. It’s been five years. And he cannot even beat a Florida team that had none of its playmakers, and was yet to score an offensive touchdown. I am through with this vent.
