STFP 033: Recognizing The Signs of Burnout In Podcasting
Are you a new podcaster that never experienced burnout? If not, your ahead of the game. But what is burnout? Burnout is the feeling and inability to maintain activity where you once did everyday, week, etc. Burnout is a feeling of feeling of physical and mental exhaustion that reduce your performance in work or recreational activities (such as podcasting). There are a number of podcasters who experience burnout. And it could be a number of reasons. Some of the things we as podcasters think of when burnout comes to mind is: 1. “I’m tired of doing this” 2. “Dam its time to create another episode already” 3. “I am not doing this anymore” 4. “I need to go on a hiatus “ All of these are the thoughts we think of when talking about burnout in podcasting. However beside hearing and saying the above mentioned thoughts, burnout just doesn’t come in one day. There are signs that burnout is coming to a podcaster. SIGNS OF BURNOUT Sign 1: Lack of enthusiasm in your show This will probably be one of the first things that your audience will notice. If you are always amp’D up about your podcast and you always bring that energy to your show, the minute you do not bring that same energy (on a consistent basis) as you do every episode your audience is going to notice very quickly that you are not putting your all into it. This is one of the first signs of burnout. Sign 2: Lack of content in show notes When you first start off in your podcasting journey you are on point with your show notes. Pretty much everything you mention in your audio podcast, you are going to have them in your showcnotes. This includes things such as Resources, web links, podcast equipment and every other sources you mention in your podcast. But when the those feelings of burnout start coming you are then going to start taking shortcuts with the show notes. Shortcuts that consist of: –  Quick broad summaries of the episodes. –  Links to the website and not specific to the article or page –  Spelling errors in your text due to rushing to get it over with –  Possible no show notes at all. So when you start to experience this, you are headed toward an extreme burnout. Sign 3: Change in Podcast Distribution So you currently have a podcast that distributes content weekly. You are faithfully putting out your weekly podcast every Thursday. Then you start in with being a day or two late with putting it out. Those days into three days, three days turn into a week and you get to the point where your podcast is now bi-weekly. And after a while you start repeating the same steps. Your bi-weekly podcast (as did your weekly podcast) is a day late and that 1 day also turns into 3 days late and then you fall back into putting out your episodes on all different days of the week (basically when you can get around to it). If you experience this, you are headed toward burnout. Sign 4: Those Infamous Negative Thoughts Some of you guys know what thoughts I am speaking of are: 1. “I’m tired of doing this” 2. “Dam its time to create another episode already” 3. “I am not doing this anymore” 4. “I need to go on a hiatus “ These thoughts are a sure sign that you are headed or already at that point of burnout. Sign 5: Looking at Podcasting as a Job You start looking at Podcasting as a job rather than something you enjoy. It no longer is fun to you. Your lack of enthusiasm and en very has made you look at what was first fun and enjoyable to something you dread doing and looking at as a job. The Outside Factors of Burnout Feelings of burnout from podcaster are not all necessary from podcasting related task. There are other outside stress factors that can contribute to podcasters being burned out. Here are a few. 1. Financial obligations that you may not be able to pay 2. Personal relationship stress 3. Health issues All of these can affect you in a way in which you do not feel like doing anything but sitting around doing nothing. So how does this effect you in podcsting? It effects you because studies have proven that people’s health issues, personal relationships and financial struggles/obligations effect their performance on their regular job. So if this cane effect you on your job why couldn’t it effect you in your other areas of life such as your recreational activities (such as podcasting)? Burnout effects people all around in everything they do. Whether it be podcasting or your recreational/hobby activities. How Do We Combat Burnout? Burnout as a result of podcasting obligations can be combatted buy several changes. You can: 1. Take breaks and don’t give all your time to podcasting. 2. Mix up some business with pleasure. 3. Change your podcast workflow (cutting work in half), As a last resort, outsource some of your podcasting tasks. If you are feeling overwhelmed with podcasting task you have options.
