The Prayers to say together and Hymn used during this devotion:
+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
We adore you O Christ, and we bless you.Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
Our Father, who art in heaven hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
To the first station:At the cross her station keeping,Stood the mournful mother weeping,Close to Jesus at the last,
To the second station:Through her soul, of joy bereavèd,Bowed with anguish, deeply grievèd,Now at length the sword hath passed.
To the third station:O, that blessed one, grief-laden,Blessed Mother, blessed Maiden,Mother of the all-holy One;
To the fourth station:O that silent, ceaseless mourning,O those dim eyes, never turningFrom that wondrous, suffering Son.To the fifth station:Who, on Christ's dear mother gazing,In her trouble so amazing,Born of woman, would not weep?
To the sixth station:Who, on Christ's dear Mother thinking,Such a cup of sorrow drinking,Would not share her sorrow deep?
To the seventh station:For his people's sins, in anguish,There she saw the victim languish,Bleed in torments, bleed and die.
To the eighth station:Saw the Lord's anointed taken,Saw her Child in death forsaken,Heard his last expiring cry.
To the ninth station:In the passion of my Maker,Be my sinful soul partaker,May I bear with her my part;
To the tenth station:Of his passion bear the token,In a spirit bowed and brokenBear his death within my heart.
To the eleventh station:May his wounds both wound and heal me,He enkindle, cleanse, anneal me,Be his cross my hope and stay.
To the twelfth station:May he, when the mountains quiver,From that flame which burns for everShield me on the judgment day.
To the thirteenth station:Jesu, may thy cross defend me,And thy saving death befriend me,Cherished by thy deathless grace:
To the fourteenth station:When to dust my dust returneth,Grant a soul that to thee yearnethIn thy paradise a place.
I believe in God, the Father almighty creator of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Hymn text: 13th Century Latin, translated by various hands.Music: Stabat Mater.
