Here is the basic outline of what I said:
Hello Professor Cavitt,

At this point in the semester, I’d like to say thank you for putting in the time for this class this semester. I haven’t submitted my SPOI survey yet, but I thought I’d give some insight here as well. First, I enjoyed learning about the process of stories, how storytelling has evolved over time, and the correct way to write and create a fictional story, or a nonfiction story that can be told well. However, having to sign-up, download, and learn how to use different software to submit assignments was insufferable. I literally would have to walk away from my computer because I couldn’t learn the software. I consider myself tech savvy, but this was the worst part of the class. I know its digital storytelling so you have to do digital stuff, but can’t you focus on WHY digital storytelling exists? Walk us through the timeline of stories becoming digital? Maybe discuss the effect social media and quick, easily digestible “stories,” has had on our ability to appreciate the truth at times. Talk about the ways that people cater their stories to their audience, in the context of the current society. Maybe connect it to our culture, the “right,” way to tell a story in the current digital age, why audiences are more receptive to certain pieces of information etc etc. I just think that you could have gotten deeper with the subject instead of giving us shitty busy work, excuse my French. I hope you can hear the student who loves to learn and thrives when she can apply her skills to her classes, because I surely would have enjoyed this class more had it been more engaging. Anyway, to the questions:

1.

I think that I have gotten better about finding my climax of the story. A lot of times I tend to talk more than necessary but its because I like to explain my thoughts. Much of the time though, my audience can understand what I‘m getting at. I have gotten better at the flow of my stories.

2.

They would learn that I am passionate about womens reproductive health, and enabling women to have their rights protected. Educating people about period poverty can lead into conversations about disproportionate treatment of women or people who menstruate in society, specifically within our governing policies outlining what a woman can or can’t do with her own body. They would learn that this is why I am a political science major.

3.

I would like to use videos instead of powerpoints. I also would like to be more creative in my delivery through the photos and series of events I use.

4.

Like I said in my intro, THE FREAKING SOFTWARE. I genuinely felt stuck so much of the time and had to use youtube videos, my friends and family’s help, and just trial and error, which for the kind of assignments I was getting, felt fruitless. If the assignments were more invigorating, I would have been ok struggling along the way, but the assignments were bland, boring, busywork.

5.

Nothing, as the concepts were easy. I would have liked to see more open-ended conversations and ideas floating through the instruction.

6.

The most valuable thing I learned in this course is what powtoon is. I had literally never heard of it before and you, Professor, used it a lot. It was interesting. I probably will not make one.

And that’s it. Thanks for listening, say hi if you think you see me on campus and I’ll do the same for you. Best of luck, wish you well.
