In 1982, American novelist, short story writer, poet, and social activist Alice Walker  became the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She was awarded the prize for her novel The Color Purple. Walker has published seventeen novels and short story collections, twelve non-fiction works, and collections of essays and poetry.
