American novelist, William Wells Brown was an abolitionist, lecturer, playwright, and historian. He is considered to be the first African-American to publish a novel, and the first to have a play and travel book published. Born into slavery in Kentucky, Brown escaped to Ohio at the age of nineteen. This book, published in 1852, is a series of letters written while traveling through Europe.
