0:56

That's plushcare.com/weight loss. Hello

0:58

and welcome to Table Manners. I'm

1:00

Jessie Ware and I'm

1:02

here in Los Angeles with Lenny.

1:04

And what's even better is that we're in

1:07

our restaurant. Yeah,

1:09

we're in Greekman's in Silver Lake. Which

1:12

means that we aren't cooking, but we know

1:15

exactly what we're eating. And it's going to

1:17

be delicious. We are about how many days

1:19

into our work day? We're

1:22

about two days into our work day. We

1:24

are about how many days into our

1:27

work day? Our holiday. Since Wednesday.

1:30

And the weather's been pretty disappointing. It's

1:32

just live in Dublin. And it's great

1:34

today. It's great today. Got

1:36

a bit warmer yesterday. Has been

1:38

chilly. I feel like I've

1:41

done quite a lot. The sun is... you've not stopped. I've

1:43

been out to lots of restaurants. Good

1:46

for you. I've

1:48

been to Superba, where I

1:50

saw Dev Patel. Oh yeah. Sitting

1:52

eating his breakfast. So yeah, we're

1:55

in Greekman's. So we're eating Greek food today.

1:57

Yeah. On the menu. Kindly, they're not open

1:59

for... But

2:01

they've opened up especially for us. And

2:04

for our guest. And for our

2:06

guest, who is pretty fabulous. Ben

2:08

Platt. I first

2:10

saw Ben Platt in The Politician

2:12

on Netflix. And I

2:14

remember he sings in it, doesn't he? What a

2:17

voice. And now he's coming

2:19

on, because he's got a new album out. But,

2:22

hello. Hello. Oh,

2:24

he's here. He's here. He's got a voice like

2:26

Sirip. Hello. Hello. I'm

2:28

Jessica. Hi. I'm Nicky. Hi.

2:31

Love, please. How are you?

2:33

So good. So happy to be here. I love

2:35

that you just wander in and we're talking.

2:37

And then it's like you

2:39

dip your toe into the LA life and

2:42

lost feelings. And then you're in

2:44

New York. You're a jet setter. I'm a jet

2:46

setter. We're just two destinations usually. But between

2:48

them, quite a jet setter. Can

2:51

I just talk about theater camps? Of

2:54

course you can. I loved it. Thank

2:56

you. It wasn't on the screen. I wasn't

2:58

behind it. It was on

3:00

my last flight to Los Angeles.

3:03

It's so good. Thank you. Thank you for watching

3:05

it. No, but you were part of it, weren't you?

3:07

Like you were in one of the execs. Yes. Noah

3:09

and I and our friends Nick and Molly, we

3:11

wrote it all together and produced it together. And

3:13

then the two of them directed and we're

3:16

in it as well. And it's like a passion project. So

3:18

where can I find it now? Hulu. How

3:20

do we get Hulu? You can buy

3:22

it on Disney Plus. It's on Disney Plus.

3:25

Oh, well. In the UK. Oh,

3:27

I'd be able to watch it. It's so good. It

3:29

was so gorgeous. Dolly, what

3:31

wine did you want? Oh my

3:33

goodness. Well, it's day. So

3:36

maybe any. White already. Are you going

3:38

to go the Sanzat or Rose? Sanzat,

3:40

Rose. Do you like white? I

3:42

like white. What kind of white do you like? Kind of like

3:45

a crisp, dry. Jonah likes

3:47

all that funky shit. No. I

3:49

don't like it normally. What do you mean funky shit?

3:51

Like an organic one? Yeah, I like that fucking funky.

3:53

Do you like it funky? I'm OK with

3:55

it. Noah likes it more than me. Noah's

3:57

your other half. Who is in favor?

4:00

but also is an actor,

4:02

fabulous actor. Writer, actor, singer. Good doctor, it

4:04

was you. Yes, he just, yes. He's in

4:06

that all the time, right? Is that like

4:08

the regular, that's like the... But this is

4:10

their last season, so he's done shooting it.

4:12

And Noah, I remember, came to one of my

4:15

shows years ago and was really, I just remember

4:17

seeing him in the audience and just

4:19

giving me lots of smiles and I appreciated

4:22

it. He is a really amazing audience member.

4:24

He's like really... Oh, I thought I was

4:26

special, no. Well, when he loves

4:28

something, he doesn't. He also

4:30

won't lie. Like he doesn't bullshit. He

4:33

commits to being in the audience.

4:36

Especially with something that's really appealing to him. And

4:38

also he really, he brings the

4:40

party, as they say. How did you two meet?

4:43

We met doing like

4:45

a comedy web series type of thing

4:47

that never even saw the light of day when we were like 19 and 20.

4:51

So a while ago now I'm 30. So

4:53

like a little over a decade ago with

4:55

the same collaborators and friends that made Peter

4:57

Kemp with us. So we met in that

4:59

little crew. And

5:01

we started dating like pretty quickly, like immediately. Or

5:03

like cooking up, or I guess whatever you call

5:06

it when you're 20. Was

5:08

this in New York? This was in New York, in Manhattan.

5:11

And pretty quickly into it, I kind of panicked and

5:14

I wrote him this long indulgent note about

5:16

how I had

5:18

the sense we were gonna be friends for life and

5:20

I didn't wanna ruin it and we were too young

5:22

and I didn't wanna jump into something and blah, blah,

5:25

blah, blah. And he sort of hated me for a

5:27

moment. And

5:29

then we found a nice friendship for several

5:31

years, which was sort of like a

5:33

willy won't they? We would have like a romantic moment

5:35

every so often but mostly a friendship. And

5:38

then got older and then I came to my

5:40

senses and we've been together now for like four

5:42

years. You're engaged. We are engaged. Who proposed? I

5:45

did first. Well done, that was

5:48

making up for the last year. Exactly. Is

5:50

that the ring? This is the ring. Oh,

5:52

it's gorgeous. Oh, it's gorgeous. He did good.

5:54

He had Sapphire, I'm a September. I gave

5:56

him one that's some emerald because he's May.

5:58

Oh, so you both got an engagement. Yes, well I

6:01

did it first and I did a

6:03

really good job. Can we talk about it? Yeah, of

6:05

course. Okay, come on. Why was

6:07

it so good? Well, I really got him in

6:09

terms of the surprise, which to me was the

6:11

only goal because he's very

6:14

sharp, so it's very hard to get

6:16

anything by him. And

6:18

I planted the seed really far out that

6:21

we were going to go have a night

6:23

of hanging out with his sister and his

6:25

sister's girlfriend, and he really thought that was the

6:27

plan. And it

6:29

was right around Thanksgiving. I also convinced him that my

6:31

family was going to be doing Thanksgiving in LA and we were going

6:33

to be doing it in New York with his. And so

6:35

I brought him to the restaurant where we were supposedly going to

6:38

meet his sister and

6:40

her now fiancé also. And

6:43

we went up and it was empty and I had put flowers

6:45

everywhere. Like half a bath. White

6:48

paper. Yes,

6:51

he put flowers. And he came in

6:53

and was sort of like, thought at

6:55

first that it was like seasonal decorations that the

6:57

restaurant did. And then I think took

6:59

a second and realized that it was empty and that we were alone

7:01

and then started to cry and then proposed

7:04

to him. And then our dear friend Shoshana Bean came out

7:06

and sang a song for us. Shosh

7:10

from... Shoshana, how

7:12

do I know this song? She's like an amazing singer Broadway star.

7:15

She was in Health Kitchen now. She

7:17

was in Waitress. She was in Wicked,

7:19

Hairspray. She's been around for a

7:21

while. What was this song? It's called Bless

7:23

the Telephone, Lobby C phrase song. It's

7:26

a beautiful acoustic ballad about long

7:28

distance. Were you not

7:30

tempted to sing yourself? No,

7:32

honestly, because we do that every...

7:35

That's our jobs and our lives. And so I

7:37

feel like the most romantic thing to

7:39

me is the fact that we don't have to be that

7:41

with each other. Not that we don't love to sing in the shower

7:43

and stuff, but I think... You

7:45

did good. It was

7:47

good. And then he liked the ring so he

7:49

seemed better. He's gorgeous. He's very gorgeous. Hannah said

7:52

he was good. He's what they call a

7:54

short king. He's rather short, but

7:56

he is... Regal. Regal,

8:01

really handsome, really...

8:04

And to your family, is he Jewish? He

8:06

is Jewish, yeah. Now

8:08

the lot. Exactly, my parents were

8:10

very happy about that. Now you're Jewish.

8:12

Yes. How did you get brought up? Was

8:15

it Friday night dinners every Friday? Yes, Shabbat

8:17

was very big in the house. I

8:19

went to Jewish day school, I went to

8:22

Jewish summer camp. My family's like pretty observant,

8:24

conservative Jews. I was bar mitzvahs, musical

8:26

theatre themed. Of course. A musical theatre

8:28

themed, or mitzvah. Of course, I sang Jersey

8:30

Boys with my brothers and my dad. Oh

8:32

my God. Has the voice dropped yet or

8:34

not? Just

8:37

was learning how to navigate the drop. Oh God.

8:40

But I did sing the Frankie Valley part. Wow. Oh

8:42

wow. And we

8:45

had Jordan Firstman on, he had

8:47

Wicked themed. Oh did he have

8:49

Wicked or Magic? Wicked. Wicked. Benny

8:52

Blanco had Magic. Incredible.

8:56

I had my bat mitzvah like two years ago and I

8:58

didn't have a theme. You were a doll bat mitzvah? Yeah.

9:01

Amazing. Where did you

9:03

do it? In my mom's living room. It's amazing.

9:05

Did you read Torah? Yeah. Oh

9:07

my God. She sang. Did

9:09

you give a devar? Did you give a speech? Yes I

9:11

did. Amazing. About queer

9:13

representation. Like queer reading on Joseph rejecting the philosopher's

9:15

wife. Ah. Was

9:18

Joseph gay? Hello. He loves

9:20

it. He loves it. He loves a

9:22

nice person. He just coked like hello. And he

9:24

said no to Professor of the Vines. Yeah.

9:27

You know. You think he was. Or

9:30

he was just. Who knows? There's many

9:32

different interpretations. I'd like to think so. Cheers. Noah

9:35

played Joseph and he played him very gay and

9:37

it was amazing. Cheers. Look, I have to say

9:39

the music in Joseph, the

9:42

musical is so good. I love it. It

9:44

pops off. I always wanted to be the narrator. Oh

9:48

you'd think she'd have that. I would have

9:50

tried. Are you going to

9:52

do musical theatre ever? I would like to. You

9:55

do musical theatre. I do. Was it

9:57

parade? That's what I just did.

10:00

And that was, was it two of you? No,

10:03

you did the other one in On Broadway recently

10:05

with the lady... Yeah, that was

10:07

Parade. Parade. With Michaela, Diamond. And it got

10:09

rave reviews. It went well. It was good.

10:12

Was that your first time doing Broadway? No.

10:14

My third. I did Book of Mormon. I replaced

10:16

it in that show when I was quite

10:19

young. I was 21, I think. And

10:22

then I did Evan Hansen on Broadway. Of course.

10:24

Of course. You didn't bring it to England, though.

10:26

I did not, no. I was

10:28

with that role from the readings all the way to

10:30

the Broadway show. So like three years of developing and

10:33

different productions and stuff. So by then I was just

10:35

ready to hang it up. How, because I

10:37

never saw Evan Hansen, but I started watching

10:39

the film. How did you

10:42

find the change of transferring it from

10:45

the stage to the film? Because

10:48

it was that way round, wasn't it? It was, yeah. It

10:50

was tough. It was

10:53

tough because it's such

10:55

a theatrical conceit. And I think it's hard for

10:58

people to see musical numbers in a

11:00

contemporary setting that are played so real

11:03

to life. There's no fantastical

11:05

element. Like in La La Land where things

11:07

are sort of magic realism or in

11:09

something that's a period piece where you expect

11:11

to see people singing. I think seeing people

11:13

in modern school hallways and in

11:16

dining rooms and things like singing earnestly is

11:18

a hard translation. And

11:21

we also made it during COVID, which

11:24

that was tough. It was one of the earliest,

11:26

earliest productions in COVID was like fall of 2020.

11:30

So lots of like hazmat suits and we couldn't

11:32

see anyone or talk to anyone. So it was

11:34

quite dreary, but you know, at least it exists.

11:37

So back to Shabbat dinner. Yes. Who

11:40

was around the dinner table? I

11:42

have quite a large family. So I have four

11:44

siblings. Where were you born? And

11:46

Westwood. Here. Oh, here. Where's

11:49

Westwood? Like adjacent to Beverly

11:51

Hills, sort of very suburban. I

11:54

went to elementary school, like right in the neighborhood.

11:57

How many brothers? Two

11:59

brothers. and two sisters. So I'm number four

12:01

out of five. I've got my oldest sisters

12:03

married with four boys. My brother's

12:06

married with a boy and a girl. My sister

12:08

is married with a boy and another boy on the way.

12:10

And then there's me and my little brother who are both

12:12

gay. OK. Which has

12:14

been fun. But it was all of us

12:16

around the table, and usually either some

12:18

cousins or another family from the community

12:20

or like someone's friend from school

12:23

and their parents or, you know, always

12:25

some sort of communal gathering. Is

12:27

Shabbat dinner as traditional like chicken

12:29

soup, chopped liver, roast

12:31

chicken? Not always. Or not

12:34

the same in LA. Close. I

12:36

mean, there's almost always a chicken of some kind.

12:38

My mom also makes amazing London royal, so there

12:40

was some of that. What is that? What is

12:42

that? Like a really yummy, chunky, I don't know

12:45

how to describe it. It's meat, beef, and it's

12:47

sort of like a

12:49

giant steak. I don't know how to describe

12:51

it. It's like a really beautiful kind of

12:53

sliced steak. Not like brisket. No.

12:55

Also brisket we would make, but cooked differently. I think

12:58

brisket is like a flow of rice. London royal is

13:00

more like a caviata. Maybe. I don't know. Do you

13:02

have it rare? No, I was going to be listening

13:04

to this and just like rolling and being like, I

13:06

can't believe you don't know how to describe what a

13:08

London royal is. He's going to be really embarrassed by

13:10

my lack of knowledge. London

13:13

royal. And is London the cut of

13:15

the meat? That's something that

13:17

I wish I knew. Because I think when I've been to

13:19

them, I've had no idea. I've been to them both. Yeah,

13:21

it looks a bit like kind of a chunky steak. Yeah.

13:24

OK, it looks like an onglei or

13:27

something, maybe. Flank. Flank, OK.

13:29

Flank. That's like, just a bit

13:31

like an onglei. Very tasty, chewy.

13:33

So that rice pilaf we always would

13:35

have. My mom makes a thing

13:38

called caramel. That's sort of like a savory

13:40

carrot cake type of situation that her mother passed

13:42

down. Oh, wow. Eusophadic or agnolte. No, Ashkhandi.

13:46

See, I would never think to have rice or

13:49

like a carrot steak. Not

13:51

with steak, not with rice. I love that.

13:53

It's a nice little collection of weird

13:55

traditional stuff. But not sort of like

13:58

digging. Everyone have a go. It's

14:00

a big family. Always buffet

14:02

style. Right. And also, there's so

14:04

many of us, so it's like you gotta... I... No

14:06

one makes them because they eat very fast, but it was because

14:08

if you didn't, someone takes it.

14:10

It was good. I

14:13

also... I went to a Shabbat

14:15

in Australia, and they had paper plates,

14:18

and I thought that was genius. No

14:20

cleanup? No cleanup. Screw

14:22

the environment. We were cyclists. Sure, we're cyclists.

14:24

But like, it was so good, because they

14:27

were just like, look, we've made all this delicious stuff, and

14:29

we don't want to wash off. Yeah. I

14:31

thought, yeah, respect. Noah's an amazing chef, and I'm

14:33

a really good... Eater. Well,

14:36

great. Well, I was gonna say

14:38

soup, mostly eater. But when I say soup, I really mean

14:41

I clean up as he goes, so that by the time

14:43

we're eating, we don't have a ton left to do. That's

14:45

perfect. Because I can't really sit and enjoy

14:47

a relaxing meal if I can see just a thing. Oh,

14:49

you won't be doing... Oh my gosh. Okay. I'm

14:52

an amazing folder. Oh. If

14:56

I'm gonna relax and enjoy some wine and some food, I

14:58

can't have a looming giant think of

15:00

business. Well, you're perfect. So what's your favorite sort

15:02

of meal? My favorite type of meal. I

15:05

mean, cuisine-wise, I'm a big Japanese cuisine person. I

15:07

love sushi. I love raw fish. Where's

15:10

your spot that you go to? Oh my

15:12

goodness. Well, there's the... Is someone else's pay?

15:14

In New York, the blue ribbon on Sullivan

15:16

Street is really delicious. Okay. And

15:20

in LA... They've got a blue ribbon in the grove.

15:22

Is it not as good? Yeah. Well, it's sort

15:24

of become chain-y. I really... I

15:26

went to one in New York and I loved

15:28

it. It was amazing. It's really delicious. I

15:31

mean, don't quote me, but I think it started downtown at

15:33

Sullivan. Okay. And all the locations

15:35

are great, but I think it's something a little

15:37

special about that. And then here, I used to

15:39

go to Nizawa, which was like the little sort

15:42

of sushi counter-y, omakase place

15:44

on Ventura that has now,

15:46

I think, sugar fish and all of that is from

15:48

that same shack. Okay. So

15:51

really anything. I like Japanese. I do. I

15:54

love it. But what would no cook at home? He

15:57

hates it. So he's an

15:59

anti-fish person. he likes to cook

16:01

everything else, which obviously I'm happy to

16:03

eat truly anything. And he makes really

16:05

good Italian food. He's half Italian, half

16:07

Jewish. Oh wow, that's a good combo.

16:09

Really good chicken parm. He makes really

16:11

good pasta. He makes a

16:13

really delicious meat love for me because I love meat

16:15

love. I do too and I

16:17

don't feel like it gets any quicker. I think I'll

16:19

make you one. He's literally making me one tonight. I'll

16:22

send you photos. He should have come. I know. He

16:24

wouldn't have got the meat though. Yeah, it's true. Does he put an

16:26

egg in it? Yes, I think so.

16:29

And then obviously Heinz is important on top.

16:31

The ketchup is important as part of the

16:33

main sauce component for

16:36

a traditional meat love. I didn't know that. Yeah.

16:40

It keeps it moist and it's

16:42

really good. Yeah. Will

16:44

you ask him to send us his recipe? Yeah,

16:46

of course. That we can do. We'll have

16:48

a go at that. Absolutely. So

16:51

I presume from hearing the

16:54

menu, your mom's a good cook. She

16:56

is a really good cook. It's

16:59

a lot about tradition for her and hearing things

17:01

on and things that her parents made, things that

17:03

my dad's parents made. And mostly

17:05

it's about giving us all a reason to sit and

17:08

eat something. So she's a lot

17:10

of other ambitions and things that she does. So

17:12

she doesn't necessarily. That's not her source of joy

17:15

and the way that maybe for some people it's

17:17

purely a pastime in an art. But

17:19

she's excellent. It's important. Yes. What's

17:22

the heritage? Are they Polish, Russian? I

17:24

think on both sides separately, they're Latvian.

17:27

I think we're Eastern European. Like my

17:30

dad separately and also my mom

17:33

both lead back there. Are we that,

17:35

Jesse? No. We're like

17:37

Lithuanian, I think. Lithuanian. Ukrainian,

17:40

Russian. Yeah. Same vibe. Yeah,

17:42

same vibe. So what are some of the recipes that

17:44

your dad's side have been, what's been passed down from your dad's

17:47

side? Well,

17:50

my grandma Sue, who passed, she

17:53

was a really amazing cook, one of the best in the

17:55

family. And she used to make these things called peanut butter

17:58

balls, which are... It's

18:00

basically like melted butter, peanut butter. It's like

18:02

a cross between a candy and a truffle

18:04

and like a little pastry. It's

18:07

really delicious. So is

18:09

there a pastry around it? No, it's just

18:11

like a. Sounds like an energy ball at

18:13

the moment. Sort of. It's

18:16

like holds its shape, but is

18:18

really soft. And it sort

18:21

of almost feels like a frozen ball of

18:23

peanut butter, but there's like some chocolate. And

18:25

I'm doing a bad job. You look terrible

18:27

at this, Ben. So you could have a

18:29

tip passover. Because you had no. It was

18:31

a sour. A kosher passover. Yes, it's a

18:33

dessert. OK. Yeah. It's like a treat, a

18:35

snack, a treat, a dessert. It's like you

18:38

can make a big batch. All the grandkids

18:40

eat them. And I grew up never loving peanut butter. And

18:42

it's one of the only things that helped to sway me

18:45

to the side. Are you going to do passovers? Are

18:47

you observant at all? Not in terms of I used to be

18:49

with my family when I was a kid, but not in terms

18:51

of like keeping the no-hammets thing.

18:54

Yeah. I don't necessarily do that. But I

18:56

always do a seder somewhere. And

18:58

you eat matzah. Yeah, of course. Matzah

19:00

pizza. Matzah cream cheese.

19:03

Matzah with melted monster cheese is really,

19:05

really good. Monster cheese? What's

19:07

monster? It's like a white kind of

19:09

square, very thick cheese. Like

19:11

a cheddar? Close, yes. And

19:14

it's got like a nice smoked edge. It's

19:16

really good. Oh. I like

19:18

it in, I like matzah brie. Delicious.

19:21

And I feel like you only do it. Because it's crayon bowl,

19:23

like a matzah crayon bowl. Yeah, and you only do it once a

19:26

year, really. You should bring it back

19:28

around. You should give it the other season.

19:30

Do you like it with cinnamon and sugar? No.

19:32

Or just savory? I like savory. Me

19:34

too. As a scramble replacement, essentially. Yeah.

19:36

But matzah bowl has managed to be year round. So

19:39

maybe let's bring matzah brie here. I agree. Do

19:41

you live here most of the time

19:43

in LA? Mostly in

19:46

New York. Our home base is Brooklyn in

19:48

New York. We have our kind of like

19:50

real sort of forever home there, like life

19:52

home. But we have a place here

19:54

as well. Because my whole family's here. And

19:56

of course, we're both actors. And so we have to

19:58

work here all the time. We flip-flop,

20:00

but New York is the

20:03

home base. How's it feeling putting a record

20:05

out? Yeah. Good.

20:07

Yeah? Does it feel different? It

20:09

does. At a show time? And like,

20:11

being on, I mean, does it feel different? Always.

20:13

I mean, when I started making, when

20:15

I made my first album, I think it was like,

20:18

it was so, it's because I've been playing characters for

20:20

so long. And I had just finished doing Evan Hansen

20:22

on Broadway, and I had become very synonymous with that

20:25

character. And so I was

20:27

so anxious to express

20:30

my own perspective and be myself and get back

20:32

in touch with my own emotions

20:35

and ideas. And so I think

20:38

the ripping the band-aid off of doing it for the

20:40

first time, it felt so good because I was just

20:42

so eager to do that. And now, as

20:44

I've made my second and now third

20:46

albums, it's like the anxiety of revealing

20:48

yourself that way creeps back in. And

20:51

you realize that it's quite vulnerable.

20:53

And I ultimately love it.

20:58

And it's a means to get to perform it, which

21:00

is always, to me, the end game is like, I

21:04

love to make an album and song write and

21:06

try to share experiences. But at the end of

21:08

the day, my most favorite thing is to

21:10

sing it live with people in the room and share it directly.

21:12

It has got the most gorgeous voice. I mean,

21:14

it's an unbelievable voice. I remember when

21:16

I heard, because I think I first

21:18

heard you on the politician singing. And

21:21

then I got slightly obsessed with you. And I

21:23

remember you put this on Instagram. You did

21:25

like a Sam Smith cover. Yes, I did.

21:27

And I sent it to Sam. And

21:30

I was like, this is insane. And then,

21:32

of course, seeing you in lots of other

21:34

things. Because I'd never seen Evan

21:36

Hunt. I

21:38

can only imagine that was quite a heavy weight on

21:42

your shoulders to have that character. Definitely.

21:45

And then you do this. Your voice is

21:47

so unique. And it's beautiful.

21:49

And you have like, I just,

21:51

I'm really jealous. It's an amazing

21:53

voice. That's very kind. When did you

21:56

realize, like you were going to probably

21:58

theatre camp, I presume, because you made a

22:00

whole. film about it and like you'd be doing

22:02

that but what was the moment where you

22:04

sung one song you're like hang on a minute or other

22:06

people were like hang on this

22:08

is it. It's a good question

22:10

it's tough because I don't know what is my

22:13

actual memory and what is like my

22:15

version of it now you know what I mean I think I

22:18

did Oliver when I was a kid.

22:20

Who were you? Oliver, duh. And I

22:22

remember singing Where

22:25

is Love and just I think something about

22:27

it was like I had I had done

22:29

a couple of like youth shows before that

22:31

and like Annie and Cinderella things where you're

22:33

you know it's a little more cute and

22:35

you know I was sort of the first

22:37

song I really got to like bite my teeth into and

22:40

I just remember I don't know the feeling

22:42

of it the reaction I'm not sure what it was but I

22:44

was like oh this is something I am active at doing. Is

22:46

it going to be a lead single? Yes I

22:49

put out a song called Andrew that's out

22:51

now that's about specifically

22:53

for me it's about like being when you're queer and

22:55

you're a young person and you fall for your straight

22:57

friends who are lovely to you and there's

23:00

nothing you can do about it because it's just the chemistry

23:02

is not right and the chemicals aren't right but you

23:04

know it's like where do you put that melancholy I remember

23:06

just being a kid and thinking it's nobody's fault that this

23:09

doesn't work but it's just not working and obviously

23:11

it can be about any work unrequited love that anyone

23:13

wants to put onto

23:15

it. Was he called Andrew?

23:19

No. Did it sing better? And also maybe you

23:21

don't want the person to know. Well there's been

23:23

an amalgam there's been so many like different I

23:25

think of like four or five different guys in

23:27

middle school and high school and I

23:30

have had crushes on people named Andrew but it was honestly

23:32

the one I liked the best and also doesn't he just

23:34

sound like a sweet straight man Andrew. He does. It could

23:36

be Kevin but Andrew's a big thing. Shabbat

23:43

was a big thing were you

23:45

a fussy eater or did you eat everything? Fussy

23:48

at the beginning in the kind of cliche

23:50

kids way of like I want grilled cheese

23:52

and pasta and chicken tenders and I don't

23:54

want to be adventurous but

23:56

then I think when I was like you know 11 and 12 My

24:00

eyes open to how much more delicious things are

24:02

if you don't limit yourself I got better and

24:05

honestly Japanese food was a big help

24:07

with that because Sometimes when you're a

24:09

kid, it's like the idea of like a raw fit like

24:11

it can be scary and it's cold and you know But

24:13

I think realizing how delicious that was. It was like, oh,

24:15

well, what else have I been missing? You know, do

24:17

you have the oh sushi here? No that we

24:20

haven't written. No, but I Yeah,

24:23

love love and also you have a really good

24:25

chain that's like it's like refrigerated it's sort of

24:28

to go sushi Yeah, it's really

24:30

solid always Yeah,

24:34

I've done a couple of concerts and then I filmed

24:36

this movie called the people we hated the wedding there

24:39

for a few Months, which was like a cute

24:41

prime Amazon Prime thing with Chris and Belle and

24:43

Allison Janney Happy

24:46

rompy movie, but I love spending time

24:48

there. I love the theater community there.

24:50

I love food there I like it.

24:53

Do you think we're a big on

24:55

musical theater in Britain? Not

24:57

I think it's a straight theater and the

24:59

I don't mean like, you know what I

25:01

mean Yeah, like Shakespeare and the classics like

25:03

that's I think the most special. Yeah special

25:05

to you there I mean you have great

25:07

musical theater too, but that's that's where the

25:09

stuff that's the most intimidating to me It's

25:11

because I feel like that's what really

25:13

originated with you guys You're

25:16

going to get the eyes of Tammy Faye coming

25:18

to you. Yes. I can't wait speaking

25:21

of Andrews Yes,

25:23

but they you've got the original

25:25

Tammy yes, Kevin's ribbon who's incredible.

25:28

I've seen her do Carol

25:30

King didn't I? Here

25:38

as well was amazing, but I also thought it was

25:40

amazing. Oh my goodness. This looks

25:43

delish Thank

25:47

you really the perks of usually we would

25:49

cook for you, however, Joan is better

25:53

Makes life easier today. Thank

25:55

you. Thank you so much

26:00

Oh yes, Spamacopita. Oh,

26:04

how many different styles? I don't know. There's

26:06

a like a shu-dou, like a pastry dough.

26:09

And then classic

26:11

silo on both sides, but one is sort of stacked

26:13

and the other is just one. Are we being your

26:15

guinea pigs that we need to try all of them

26:17

and tell you which one you need to put on

26:19

the menu? Okay fine, great thanks. I

26:22

didn't know you could have Spamacopita three ways,

26:24

but I appreciate it. Did you see anything

26:26

in New York recently? Merrily we've rolled it

26:28

on. So great. Aren't you? Yeah. In

26:30

the film? Yeah. Mm-hmm. Which

26:33

is gonna be filmed over like three

26:36

decades or? I think we have maybe

26:39

15 years to go. How

26:41

do you start it then? Mm-hmm. We

26:43

hooked up the first two sequences. We

26:46

have another one coming up next year. And

26:49

we just... We get to spend time with Paul. Yes, love

26:51

Paul. God, you Paul Sam. I know,

26:53

that's great. Medical. Oh,

26:55

he's gorgeous. That he is, inside and out.

26:59

Is he brooding? No,

27:02

not really. I mean... Is he sensitive? Oh yeah.

27:04

Is he like his character in normal

27:06

people at all? Much more joyful. Okay.

27:09

But yes, he's very deep and

27:11

introspective but couldn't be lovelier. Was

27:13

anybody else into singing,

27:17

acting, the group

27:19

in your gang? Yes, you mean like

27:21

siblings? Mm-hmm. Yes, we all grew up

27:23

doing views theater and theater at school.

27:25

Okay. My sisters didn't ever pursue it.

27:28

They are smart. They were like,

27:30

we're not gonna do this. This seems terrible. My

27:33

older brother still performs and

27:35

sings and he was phiero

27:37

and wicked for a while. I'm going

27:40

to see that. I've never seen

27:42

it. You've never seen Wicked? I know. No, I

27:44

haven't. I might have. Oh, I have. No, babe,

27:46

I'm going. I'm investing. I'm

27:49

taking my daughter and my niece and my son.

27:51

I'm doing it so they can be prepared for the

27:53

film, which I believe is going to

27:55

be phenomenal. Yes. Well, I'm incredibly biased

27:58

as my dad produced the film. and

28:00

created the musical as well. Oh

28:02

my god! Shining in my nephobaby.

28:04

Oh my god! I love the

28:06

nephobaby but like musical theatre, it

28:08

feels different. It's a special

28:10

type. It feels very different. But I mean, Cynthia

28:12

couldn't be more gifted and she's been a friend

28:14

for a long time and Ari is

28:17

also obviously incredibly gifted so it's going to be wonderful

28:19

I'm sure. So your whole family's been in the show

28:21

since? Yeah, well only my older

28:23

brother and I are still sort of pursuing

28:25

it but everyone has a love for it.

28:27

What does your older brother do? Sort

28:29

of jack of all trades, kind of does lots

28:31

of different things. Right. And my younger brother also

28:33

has a beautiful voice and works in

28:36

music like in publishing. But

28:40

we all definitely bond over a love of singing

28:42

and theatre and musicals and

28:45

Barbra Streisand. Oh shit, Barbra Streisand. Have you

28:47

met her? I have. Have

28:50

you sung with her? No, it's my greatest dream. Tell

28:53

me about a Barbra Streisand encounter. Was

28:55

there any food involved or drinks? She

28:57

came to see me and Evan Hansen

28:59

on Broadway. Did you know that, was

29:01

it like Barbra's coming in tonight? Yes,

29:03

well it was a very particular era

29:06

when that show first came out where word was getting

29:08

around and we were having lots of exciting visitors and

29:10

in the beginning I was like I don't want to know and then

29:12

it became a sort of thing where I would

29:15

happen upon people in the audience without knowing that

29:17

they were there and it would kind

29:20

of interrupt me. So I decided I would just

29:22

rather have all the information. So by

29:24

that point I was getting a list always of who was

29:26

coming and so I knew she was going to be there.

29:28

What a list. And she came back afterwards and couldn't have

29:30

been lovelier and then she sat on my couch in my

29:33

dressing room with me and asked me a lot of questions

29:35

about crying and singing because

29:38

Evan Hansen has a lot of catharsis

29:40

while singing and she wanted to

29:42

get in there about the mechanics. She

29:45

was like where does the mucus go and when do you

29:47

have time to swallow and where do you rest? Like really

29:49

wanted to get like talk shop about the singing and I

29:52

was like this is my dream come true. And

29:55

you were like well you I was like hello.

29:57

You ever watched My Man? Like if anyone knows

29:59

how to. I've never seen, hold

30:01

on, which one? That's the

30:03

last song in the film version of Funny Girl that she

30:05

sings where she's, where he's

30:07

about to come home back from prison or maybe he

30:09

just has come back from prison and she's singing on

30:12

stage alone in the black. Oh, that is good, that

30:14

is good. Saw Bing. Juvederm

watch Wow

32:46

In the fall oh wow,

32:48

well you have the back to the party

32:50

Yes Well scheduling is tough because I'm about

32:52

to go I'm playing the palace on Broadway

32:54

for three weeks I'm doing a residency of

32:56

my music and then I'm doing a

32:58

tour for the summer and then I get married after that So

33:01

I had to do the bachelor before all that began You

33:03

know when you're singing you can't go hard I know

33:06

I wanted to go hard Where

33:08

did you go? We just did in the city

33:10

in New York and we all stayed together In

33:12

an apartment and they they did like a

33:14

sort of like a cast party themed party

33:17

because we all met going to cast parties when we

33:19

were in high school together, so we had like, you

33:21

know cocktails and water bottles and they

33:24

dance to music from high school and

33:27

My friend Nick made me a really intense very

33:30

involved scavenger hunt with lots of puzzles and things

33:32

Which is what we really bond over I'm a

33:34

huge nerd when it comes to like riddles and

33:36

puzzles and games and like I love

33:38

like an escape room Love an escape

33:40

room love and

33:43

then we went dancing at a place called Joyface in New

33:45

York Which is really really fun and they play a lot

33:47

of great music great like Abba's 70s

33:49

gays. It's great Um,

33:52

I have to say I think it

33:54

was a second song felt a bit Abba at the

33:56

beginning which on your oven Oh all

33:58

American Queen. Yeah, there was like It

34:00

was like the melody it just felt

34:02

it had like a moment of bjorn Wow. Do

34:04

you know what I mean? No, I mean,

34:07

I'll take it to the grave. No, listen, it

34:09

was yeah, I loved it. It was great See, will you

34:11

pass me the jam and a bit of toes? Yes, please

34:18

Did you get any jam with yours of course,

34:20

okay huge part of it yes the tank You

34:23

performed for Joe Biden the other day.

34:25

Yeah, so the lineup was amazing

34:28

You lizzo. Yeah, Leah

34:30

Michelle Cynthia Riva who's

34:33

like one of the greatest instruments ever You've

34:35

sung the cover. Did you sing an original as well? No,

34:38

just the Just they

34:40

wanted like, you know inspirational upbeat kind

34:43

of vibe. We need to ask you about

34:45

your last supper Does

34:47

that mean the one of the last dinner just huh? No

34:49

the one that you're gonna have before you go

34:51

on a desert island You're going away to

34:54

sing on an island Not

34:57

gonna be allowed to have any of your delicious food

34:59

that you want starter

35:01

main dessert drink of choice Can

35:04

it be like from different? Yes everywhere

35:10

The whole day in New York did lots of different

35:12

places you can do whatever you like Okay,

35:15

so I'm having a vodka martini with a

35:17

twist great goose My

35:21

starter is a spicy tuna and crispy rice

35:24

Mmm like you know, I love that from

35:26

nobiz. Yeah, the novices great one Cuz he

35:28

has a great everyone's sort of doing it

35:30

now But a really good where it's like

35:33

crisp on the outside and soft in the

35:35

middle the rice cake really nicely gorgeous Yeah,

35:37

yeah, that's tuna mix little garnish for

35:40

the main I Mean if

35:42

it's like a last meal for a while just

35:44

maybe like a spaghetti bolognese just like a really

35:46

nice meat sauce thick pasta

35:54

Like is it homemade or is it a particular

35:56

restaurant? Well Noah and it's one of

35:58

the first things he taught me how to make we

36:00

made it on zoom together during the pandemic. So do

36:02

you have any tips, extra things? Do you use put

36:04

milk in it? Do you think he will feel to

36:06

put butter and cream in those things? He's even more

36:08

allergic to dairy than I am. And yet he simply

36:10

can't veer away from it. But

36:12

other than Noah's, I'm trying to think it like a restaurant.

36:14

Well, I mean, we've been to Italy and that's it's hard

36:16

to be like eating it in from the

36:18

source, you know what I mean? Are

36:21

you having any science with the stag bone? Maybe

36:23

like a sauteed broccoli. I really love some

36:27

garlic bread. We're going Italian. Yeah, yeah.

36:29

I think for the main, like

36:32

nothing says like main course,

36:34

like a bowl of pasta.

36:36

Yeah, that's the whole meal. I agree. And

36:39

dessert would be vanilla ice cream and

36:41

cheesecake. What kind

36:43

of cheesecake? Just a classic New

36:45

York cheesecake, even like juniors, like

36:48

dense, dense, big, chunky, bitter lemon

36:50

in it. But not not

36:52

a whole layer of citrus on top.

36:54

I like just straight to the

36:56

cheesecake, nice cinnamon, you know,

36:59

crust. And where did you get your cinnamon? Anywhere

37:02

that has it. I mean, you'll always oh,

37:04

yes, if it's on the menu. It's what I

37:06

went for my first like 16 birthdays or something.

37:08

My cake was always a cheesecake. I want wine

37:10

with it. Oh, I

37:12

switched over to wine from the martini. Yeah, no, that's

37:14

nice. Would you? I like a red. Like like a

37:16

really light, kind of drinkable

37:19

juicy red. Okay, so this

37:21

has been my find from what?

37:23

Trader Joe's and their wine. It's

37:26

great. So good. I thought I

37:28

bought the rose from there. The guy was

37:30

like, I was like, can you give me kind

37:32

of inexpensive prima tivo or something like that? And

37:35

he went, yeah, $4.99. I

37:38

said, Oh, God, he went, trust me. What's

37:40

it called? It's delicious. We've got to choose. But

37:42

I was like, I sound like

37:45

a snob. And I love a deal. But $4.99. Really, he

37:48

went, trust me, if you want a

37:50

juicy red, you don't need to

37:52

spend all that money on the other shirt. I love

37:54

it. We've got your desert island meal. What would

37:56

be your desert island musical? that

38:00

you have to take the years. Like I only can

38:02

take one soundtrack, you're saying? Yeah. Sunday

38:05

in the Park with George, which is the

38:07

song time musical. That's the song time. It's my

38:09

favorite musical of all time. So that's where we

38:11

need to enter, if we're gonna go and study

38:14

Sunday, that's the number one. That's the way to

38:16

go to start. It's my dream of all dream

38:18

roles one day. It will happen. I

38:20

will do it before I pass. And

38:23

I- How old do you need to be to be that part? I'd

38:26

say like in four or five years I could do it.

38:30

But it's about, it's a fictionalized

38:33

story about George Serat, the painter, like the

38:35

pointless painter. And it's all about like the

38:38

things you sacrifice to be an artist and how

38:40

living in your head and loving your work takes

38:42

away from your ability to connect with people and

38:45

relationships. And it's just

38:47

so beautiful. And there's a great PBS capture

38:49

of the original cast with Bernadette Peters and

38:51

Mandy Patinkin that you can watch. I'm sure

38:53

it's on Prime or- No Bernadette Peters was

38:55

in Gypsy. Yeah, but Mandy Patinkin was- We've seen her

38:58

in Gypsy on Broadway. You

39:00

know, I always wanted to marry Mandy

39:02

Patinkin. Who's Mandy Patinkin? He was in Homeland,

39:04

he was sore. Yes, that's right. And

39:07

I loved him so much. And then I

39:09

discovered he sang so beautifully. Amazing,

39:11

he was the original Evita. Yeah,

39:13

yeah. He's amazing. So

39:15

you should watch that original. It's really

39:18

well captured. How do you get it? I'm

39:20

sure she's either Prime or that's like someone's

39:22

got it. I wanna know, look, you're about

39:24

to go and do a residency

39:26

on Broadway, which is just so fabulous,

39:28

the sentence. And then you're going

39:30

on your tour. Like, I mean, you're having a good

39:32

time, Ben. Cuckoo bananas, yeah. I

39:35

wanna know. What does that mean? He's just having

39:37

a fabulous time. Cuckoo bananas. I just like, I

39:39

could never have dreamed of this, like wild. How

39:42

different is it when you're preparing for

39:44

a residency on Broadway to when you're

39:47

touring? With preparation, I mean, and

39:49

I'm talking more food because I just need some tips.

39:52

Meaning like what are like- You need to keep the

39:54

saying because it's singing and- Yes, once

39:57

we get like four or five weeks out, I'll

39:59

start doing no- dairy, no gluten,

40:02

like high protein, lots of water,

40:04

probably cut back on the drinking,

40:07

unfortunately. Just to optimize

40:10

like as little mucus as possible so you

40:12

don't have to clear so much and energetically

40:14

you have everything you need to sing.

40:17

Do you have tomatoes? Jesse avoids tomatoes.

40:19

No, I avoid a high acid too,

40:21

like that. I'm high, I don't even

40:23

use a high acid. Yes,

40:26

the residency, because touring you

40:28

move around. Yes. I mean

40:31

I just... It exhausts quickly. Yeah, no I

40:33

can't wait to be in one because I

40:35

love doing like a regular Broadway show where

40:37

you have a routine and you get comfortable

40:39

so to get to do that mixed with

40:41

doing your own perspective it's

40:43

like a dream come. What's your food

40:45

of choice? Are

40:47

you quite a creature of habit so when

40:49

you're in that zone because I

40:51

always just do chicken thighs? Yeah, I love to

40:53

eat at a... You know what dig is? Or

40:56

like it's like one of those places where you've got

40:58

like a protein, a starch and a couple of veggies

41:00

and you make like a little plate. So

41:03

I like like a bowl where I just get right to the business

41:05

of like a little bit of starch and carper

41:07

energy, a little bit of protein, chicken, a little

41:10

bit of veggie. It's just for fuel really. Exactly.

41:12

It can't be really for indulgence can it? No,

41:14

just because anything that's too... Makes you feel too

41:16

like weighed down. But if you've done well to

41:18

it you want to eat a chocolaty cloud. Well

41:20

you didn't ask about after. Let's

41:23

talk about after. Well I do still

41:26

have to avoid dairy technically but I love like either

41:29

like a vegan dessert or like some

41:31

sorbet or like some kind

41:33

of like dessert cocktail or a dessert

41:35

cocktail. Yeah like a like a little

41:37

hot hot potty. Yeah because it's

41:39

kind of medicinal. Good for the throat. Not too not

41:42

too drying if you're gonna have something. Just

41:45

something cozy. But I mean you're

41:47

going on tour is there anywhere that you're looking forward to going

41:49

for the food or is it just like off

41:51

limits? Look he's eating dig. Is

41:54

there anywhere you'll be like you know what I've

41:57

got a day off tomorrow what if I can eat in here?

42:00

Nashville has amazing hot chicken and barbecue and

42:02

stuff. And that's not so outside

42:04

the realm of what I can have. So I'll

42:06

probably go in there. And Chicago has such great

42:08

food, always. Oh, it's so good. When are you

42:10

in Chicago? I forget when. The whole

42:12

thing is mid-June to the end of July. Do

42:14

you ever sing karaoke? Or is it because

42:16

you're a singer, you never do it? I

42:20

like to go with my closest friend. For my bachelor party,

42:22

one of the things we did was go to karaoke. And

42:25

what was your song? In that

42:27

case, each sort of thing. We each

42:29

did a song that was important to us growing up

42:31

for the reason we sing together. So which one was

42:33

yours? If I'm really going to show off in karaoke,

42:35

I like to do Celine Dion or

42:37

Whitney Houston or something. If we're going to do it,

42:39

let's do it. You know what I mean? What's

42:41

your Celine Dion song? All

42:43

Coming Back to Me? Yeah, or All

42:45

By Myself. Oh, of course.

42:49

And You're Whitney? If

42:52

I'm trying to keep the energy up, how will I know?

42:55

But if you're going for your moment, I

42:57

have nothing. Yeah. Would

43:00

you, we've talked about sorbet, we've talked

43:03

about dairy, would you have a little

43:05

bit of olive oil ice cream with us, just

43:08

like a little spoonful? Yeah, of course. He's

43:10

avoiding dairy. Well, no, I'm not. I mean, Mum,

43:12

we gave him the wrong bloodletting. My residency's not

43:14

for a little bit, so. OK. I'm

43:16

already off the cheese train, so. Do

43:19

you think you've got good table manners, Ben? Yes,

43:22

in terms of, like,

43:26

discourse. But I can chew with

43:28

my mouth open sometimes. Also, I put my

43:30

elbows on the table sometimes. And my unique toes. Was

43:32

it important in your family? Not

43:34

really. When there's not many

43:37

kids, those things are, those are probably the right

43:39

type. There was a lot of children. Yeah. As

43:41

long as you're being actually respectful and nice to

43:43

each other, then it doesn't really matter if you're

43:45

sitting like this, or a little messy, or whatever.

43:47

Where will your honeymoon be? Are you allowed

43:50

to know? Where?

43:52

One of the dates for the same time? We're

43:54

going all over the place. We've only been once, and it was a very

43:56

quick trip just to celebrate the end of the parade. And

43:59

so it's been a wonderful time. there we just had the

44:01

dreamiest time we were like we have to come

44:03

and do it right next time so it'll be

44:05

a you know all over. We do

44:07

the postiano you know a mouthy coast because

44:09

you're on your honeymoon of course you should.

44:12

You said it not me. You

44:14

should. That's grapefruit. Yeah

44:16

try it. Would you like

44:18

to try some grapefruit? No you should try the olive

44:21

oil first. I do love olive

44:23

oil cakes so I think I'm gonna really like the olive oil ice cream.

44:25

It's really interesting. Oh I like

44:27

that. I think that's delicious. It's

44:31

gorgeous. I like that. Yeah. That's

44:33

got the grapefruit and the ice cream. Oh

44:36

Ben it's been so lovely to meet

44:38

you. Likewise. Good luck with your residency, with

44:40

your tour, with the album. Thank you.

44:43

Merrily we roll on. I can't believe we have to wait how many

44:45

years? I think we're down to like

44:47

15. Fucking hell. I

44:52

won't be here then. I'm so sorry. Touch

44:55

wood. Touch wood please God I like that.

44:58

I'm old. Oh

45:00

God that's a very depressing way to finish this.

45:03

Well I just chat. Sorry. I'm

45:05

very excited about that. But wow. So do you

45:07

think we can have a prequel? Yes

45:10

a prequel. My parents say the same thing as they do.

45:12

They love to talk about it because it's such an exciting

45:14

thing but they're like... But

45:18

everyone's gonna make it there. It's a reason

45:20

to live. Okay that's

45:22

what I'm gonna do. Do you hear

45:25

it God? Listen. Thank you so

45:27

much for coming on. It's really

45:29

lovely to meet you. Good

45:31

luck. Good luck now. I

45:48

love that. Lovely,

45:51

gorgeous. Interesting. Has

45:53

a Barbara Streisand story. Is

45:55

multi-talented. Does a bit of everything.

45:58

I mean, direct to produce. song

46:00

right. There's a musical album coming out. I

46:02

really enjoyed seeing him. Me too. I really

46:06

appreciated Jonah cooking

46:08

for us. Which was your favorite thing?

46:11

She liked the flaming... I like

46:13

this... I like this jam. The

46:16

flaming saganaki. It's like

46:18

marmalade. Flaming

46:20

saganaki. Flaming tag was good. Stanna coppita. I

46:22

think we should put that on the menu,

46:24

Jonah, the feeler. I think it will go

46:27

down very well. Sam wants me to

46:29

bring back the dips. Thank you

46:31

to Greetmans for giving us delicious food.

46:33

Thank you to Ben for coming over, telling

46:35

us all his food stories. And thank

46:38

you mum because I feel like you seem very

46:40

relaxed and I'll see you down on the beach

46:43

tomorrow. I will. How do you mind is coming

46:45

out on the 31st of May, you can feel

46:47

it right now. And his single Andrew is out.

46:50

My story behind that. Just go and

46:52

listen and fall in love. Hold

47:13

up. What was that? Boring. No

47:15

flavor. That was as bad as

47:17

those leftovers you ate all week.
