This is Take That, everybody. This life.

0:10

The last five weeks we've been counting down to the

0:12

release of our brand new album, This Life.

0:15

We've been uncovering forgotten memories, turning

0:18

back the clock thanks to some familiar faces,

0:20

old friends, and telling our stories in

0:23

our own words. Hello

0:29

everybody, I'm Gary. I'm

0:32

Mark. And I'm Howard. And this

0:34

is Take That, This Life. See

0:36

there wasn't a pause then. Yeah, I liked it.

0:38

It was really good, wasn't it? It was. It

0:40

came in confidently. It did. Yeah,

0:42

well done. It did. You didn't need

0:45

that cheesy. I've got those ears. Yeah, you didn't need it.

0:47

You didn't need it. And now we've reached

0:49

our final episode. I know,

0:52

I've enjoyed it. Have you enjoyed it? Do

0:54

you think we'll be able to keep the microphones on? No. I

0:58

reckon after we've won

0:59

loads and loads of podcast awards,

1:02

I reckon we should do this again.

1:05

We've got to do this again. It's been like, we've never done this, haven't we? It's

1:07

been good. First time. We've presented TV shows

1:09

together, haven't we? But never a podcast. Yeah.

1:12

And we've done radio shows as well. Yeah. But

1:15

never a podcast. Never a podcast. Never

1:17

a podcast. So everybody, as usual, I'm going to start

1:19

with a date. Now in the past,

1:22

on other episodes, there have been dates in the

1:24

past, but this is a future date. Oh,

1:28

now that's got you thinking.

1:29

In fact, the date is actually

1:31

tomorrow. The 24th of November, 2023. I

1:38

think if we don't get this one, there's a problem. What

1:41

is happening tomorrow? I'll let you

1:43

go, Matt, because I got the last one right. So I think

1:45

you should have the honours. Well,

1:48

big things happening tomorrow. Our album's out.

1:50

Our album. Yeah. Funny,

1:52

isn't it, when an album's released? You've

1:55

done a lot of work to get to that point. Yeah.

1:58

I know when I get a new record, that feeling.

1:59

feeling of when you press play and I know

2:02

all my lifetime the excitement that

2:04

I've had when I've put on records

2:07

that I've listened to whether that was Madonna

2:09

in the past or the Vine or when

2:12

you press play on a new record for

2:14

the first time and you put the

2:16

needle on the vine and I know people don't do that so

2:18

much now. I've on this one. I've on

2:20

this one and you sit back

2:23

and you start to enjoy it. So tomorrow

2:26

people can do that. Yeah. So

2:28

far they would have only heard Windows.

2:31

Brand new Son. Brand new Son which is done

2:34

on later videos on and

2:37

we'll see the Son. This Life. This

2:39

Life which was out earlier this month. Yeah, the track. I

2:41

hope you love them. I think it was out on the second wasn't

2:43

it? So there'd be nine songs that they probably

2:46

haven't heard. Yes. Exciting.

2:49

It is. Very exciting. Well

2:51

hang on. It's already been a journey

2:53

of firsts this album because we've

2:55

never done a podcast before. That's the

2:57

first thing. But also it was our

2:59

first time ever on later. After

3:02

this album was. Which that's funny that

3:05

isn't it? It's funny that we've never done that

3:07

show. Yeah. I used

3:09

to watch quite a few of those later

3:11

with Jules Holland and used to think

3:13

I wonder when we're ever going to

3:15

get on this programme. I used to see all

3:17

the musicians that you're all around in

3:19

the circle. Quite serious musicians

3:22

and past musicians and you'd think are

3:25

we... Are we

3:27

going to get on this programme? And

3:30

yeah we are worthy and we've been on it

3:32

and Jules Holland was a

3:35

really lovely, giving...

3:38

Gent. Gent with me. Yeah.

3:41

Who obviously knows his music. I mean Jules, think

3:43

about him. He was in Squeeze. Yeah.

3:45

And he's been around for years. Don't

3:48

make him sound too old though. No. Well

3:50

he does look old though doesn't he? No he doesn't. No.

3:53

He looks amazing. Yeah. We've

3:55

watched a lot of our bands over the years and

3:58

for us to be in that... sort of environment

4:01

was. Ali Pally. Meeting lots of

4:03

other artists and musicians for the first

4:05

time. I think you said, but that's how we performed.

4:08

Ali Pally was back

4:10

when we were splitting up on the

4:13

Brit Awards. Exactly right. We did, I

4:15

think we did three Brit

4:17

Awards at Alexander Palace.

4:20

We did the Beatles medley. Beatles

4:22

medley. 93, something like that. We

4:25

did the first

4:27

ever performance of Back For Good. So

4:29

that would have been 95. And then

4:32

we did How Deep Is Your Love, which was our final

4:34

single as a band. Remember Chris Evans being the host

4:36

that year. And the room we recorded

4:39

the TV programme in, we did the video to

4:41

set it on. That's right. What a beautiful

4:43

room. In 2010 that was. The

4:46

idea of when we first

4:48

was approached for doing it, I just

4:51

thought, what a perfect record. It

4:53

was been worth the wait. Yeah, and it

4:55

was so, for us coming back

4:57

now with this new record, I mean, it's

4:59

been five years since we've made an

5:01

album. And sharing spaces again,

5:04

gutting out on tour, you know, there was the pandemic

5:06

where a lot of these shows were not being

5:08

able to be made in the same way. And now

5:11

to be able to all be there in this environment

5:13

where there's lots of people sort of

5:15

together in these concerts

5:17

and shows happening again. It's so,

5:20

so great to be back. Thank

5:22

goodness. Now you did say the P

5:24

word there, mate. Are we not allowed? Well,

5:27

no, I'm going to go on to that now because we haven't

5:29

touched that on this show. We're

5:31

not really talked about because obviously

5:33

we were all separate because everyone was in the world.

5:37

What was the pandemic like for you? If

5:39

you could sum it, I know it was complicated because

5:42

it was a long period of time. But in general,

5:46

how was it for you, that whole thing? How did you

5:48

feel? For me and my family, it

5:51

was a real coming together

5:54

of a real, felt like a real family.

5:56

You know, the fact that we were doing things and you had

5:58

to really think about what you were doing. doing tomorrow

6:00

because you know you there's so many places

6:02

you couldn't go lots of places for clothes

6:05

you know we did lots of walks lots

6:08

of things together as a family it

6:11

was actually beautiful really we'd made a

6:14

photo album book how was it called Love

6:17

Down. Love Down. We made a photo

6:20

album called Love

6:22

Down. Well Katie made it I mean I've also got

6:24

the time you know even in more

6:28

time.

6:31

I remember homeschooling and

6:33

our internet couldn't cope with three

6:36

kids trying to homeschool at the same

6:38

time computers on yeah and we

6:40

had to sort of take turns every now and again

6:42

I did. Internet sound. Even

6:45

enough kiddies. I

6:50

remember homeschooling as the main thing

6:52

because it also I think that your relationships

6:55

that you build as kids

6:57

when you're growing up as well around that time

7:00

socially and that sort of part

7:03

of your life is very important I think

7:05

and I felt for them I was quite

7:07

happy to have them home but I felt

7:09

for them not

7:11

being able to go out and do things. Yeah selfishly

7:14

that's how we looked at it because we had

7:17

all our kids under one roof

7:19

yeah and we wouldn't

7:21

have had that time with them if the world

7:23

had been normal yeah I'm trying I

7:25

mean I try and look at every every that's just

7:27

me I try and find the positive

7:30

in every every situation and

7:32

when we look back at that time it's just that well

7:35

Dan wouldn't have been home for six

7:38

months. Give you a bit of extra time.

7:40

We felt like we were holding on to

7:43

the days and you know the other thing I always remember

7:45

from that the whole period was the

7:48

happiest being

7:50

on earth as our dogs they

7:52

couldn't believe it we're

7:54

not leaving ever.

7:57

So many wars in a day. So

8:00

with you all day and I worked

8:03

out at one point that was because I

8:05

we went to bed at sort of 11 ish Dan

8:07

didn't go bed till five ish four

8:10

ish five ish he was playing video things

8:12

with his mates all night I got up

8:15

at six so the dogs had a deficit of

8:17

one hour when they were actually by

8:19

themselves and I think

8:21

they were the most disappointed of

8:24

everybody when it when the world went back to

8:26

normal because our dog always looks at me

8:28

like where are you going

8:30

now? What really do you need to do

8:33

that?

8:33

Just stay at home with us.

8:35

They were so happy our

8:37

dogs they really were. The other thing which

8:39

I remember very fondly because you both

8:42

very kindly joined me was

8:44

when we started doing the crooner session.

8:46

Yeah we had great. We had great.

8:49

There was so much more fun going

8:51

on behind the scenes. People

8:54

only ever saw the sort of three minutes on Instagram

8:56

or whatever but the behind the scenes

8:59

conversations kind of made these

9:01

things happen. Yeah because because what

9:03

happened was because no one had anything to do

9:06

you know yeah I mean I remember like

9:08

the phone calls with people like Sting or

9:10

whatever.

9:11

What do you think we should do? Should

9:13

we have a cup of tea? How

9:15

are you doing there?

9:16

You know these calls have gone

9:18

on and I was getting time with some

9:20

of these people that you'd never get five

9:22

minutes with but they didn't have anything to do. Should

9:25

we do that one or should we do this one

9:27

and you play that one? I think we should do

9:30

that. These

9:32

conversations would sometimes go on for

9:34

weeks. People are looking for connections. There was so

9:36

much more fun that went on behind those

9:38

scenes and we did one together

9:40

didn't we? Someone else who

9:43

was on the crooner sessions and

9:46

we're very excited to announce

9:48

these on tour with us as well. Next

9:51

year we're very excited about a great

9:53

friend of mine. Someone we all

9:55

love. Mr Olimas

9:58

everybody! Come on! Oh my

10:00

god, look

10:01

at him! Look

10:07

at him! Look

10:10

at him! Look

10:15

at him! Look at him!

10:19

Look at him!

10:22

Oh, what an entrance.

10:25

What an entrance. Oh

10:27

mate, I can't wait. That is great, isn't it? I

10:30

think we could go back to episode one, do we? I think

10:32

we could. I don't think Ollie wants

10:34

to do that. I think we

10:37

could do that. No, I can't

10:39

wait to hear all the stories. On

10:41

a serious note, Ollie, we're

10:43

delighted to have you on tour with

10:45

us. But second to that, so

10:47

are our fans. They're

10:50

so... I mean, it's just like,

10:52

this is the best night out. That's what everyone's

10:54

saying. Well, that's what really wasn't...

10:57

When the idea was brought to me, I was just on tour actually. And

10:59

what I found on my tour was that we had Scatter

11:02

For Girls, great bands. And they just brought

11:04

something different to the show. And

11:06

it felt like the fans were in their seats early

11:08

and they really enjoyed the whole night. And

11:11

so when the idea of going on tour

11:13

with you guys, I was like, well, one,

11:15

I wasn't sure if you'd be up for it. And then I was

11:17

like, I'd be really up

11:19

for that. Because I've been a huge fan of you guys

11:21

for a long, long time. And we've always crossed

11:24

paths at different points, especially in my career. And

11:26

so, yeah, it was just like something off

11:29

the bucket list, an honour to be a part of such a... I

11:31

was glad we didn't have to at the end

11:33

of your tour when you were tired. You were

11:35

like, well, I've gone on tour again for another two years.

11:38

But yeah, I think the fans are just going to have

11:40

a fantastic time. And yeah,

11:43

I promise you... In your car, your

11:45

songs now, my family, my

11:48

kids, I don't mean that. But they got very excited

11:50

when I said that you were going out tour with us. No,

11:52

he's not. It is? Oh, wow.

11:56

Well, it's the same with my family. They

11:58

can't believe it. I

12:00

think it's gonna be a great night and a

12:02

great energy for the fans. Absolutely.

12:04

Yes, it's gonna be an honor great So you're aware

12:07

we've had a few nights since So

12:09

and I'm sorry There's another

12:11

three or four is it? You need to

12:13

get ready to get ready. Yeah We

12:23

just got married and we've been set which was trying

12:25

to have kids so yeah, that's kind of yeah

12:27

Could be so here's the baby Congratulations,

12:40

yeah very reasonably married right? Yeah

12:43

only recently but it's been a whirlwind really

12:45

how long ago? Yeah, so we got married

12:48

in July. So it's only been three months

12:50

by haven't seen Because

12:52

I've been I had to finish the end of my tour

12:55

and then I had loads of different bits going I had

12:57

to film something on TV and I was a TV

12:59

show I was doing and all these different bits So bless

13:02

us. She doesn't really spend much time with me.

13:05

And then I said to all just now that I am

13:07

home Just so you know next year. I'm going again

13:13

So but no it's been beautiful I think

13:15

getting married for me was something I

13:17

really it was at the right time in my life I

13:19

needed that I met an incredible woman and I

13:22

just thought you know Well, I need to I need to

13:24

yeah, I need to commit and be that guy and

13:26

be a husband So I've got a chance for

13:28

honeymoon yet.

13:29

No, so you're gonna get Yeah,

13:33

we'll get you guys we'll get you what we

13:36

could send him out of way We

13:42

know this lovely place called Chapelle's in

13:44

Leonards, what yeah I

13:55

Don't think I've ever told you this story that

13:57

guy but you remember when you first met me

13:59

I'm interested in this. You wanna know the story?

14:02

I've gotta tell you this, it's on the podcast, so it might not

14:04

be you. Do you remember when you first

14:06

met me? You won't remember this. I don't think you'll remember.

14:08

Really? Really. So,

14:10

but did we not come on the show on

14:13

X Factor? Not my year, no. Okay.

14:16

Robbie did my year, we had Robbie, Michael Bublé,

14:18

and George Michael. You did the

14:20

year after. As guests? Yes. Okay.

14:23

So then you came on the year after. Okay, okay. Because I didn't,

14:25

we didn't, I sort of knew because I'd seen Robbie

14:28

in 2009 you guys

14:29

were doing, potentially doing something together.

14:32

Okay. So I've come off

14:34

the show. Off the X Factor.

14:36

Off the X Factor, yeah. I've come off the show and

14:38

I got signed, I got a record deal. Yeah. I

14:41

couldn't believe it. I couldn't be like, okay, signed, I'm gonna be on

14:43

an album. And I was at Simon Studios

14:46

in Notting Hill and I

14:48

was there in with the legendary Trevor

14:50

Horn. Wow. Great. Absolute

14:53

legend. Yeah. And it's my first recording

14:55

of the song. Oh, man. Thinking what,

14:58

no. I didn't know too much about Trevor, but

15:00

then the night before I was with my dad, I said, dad, I'm in

15:02

with this guy called Trevor Horn's mate. He's

15:04

not just a guy. Yeah.

15:08

He's a major figure. He

15:10

said, you need to go and do your homework.

15:13

I was like, all right, okay, I better go and do my homework.

15:15

Anyway, then I completely

15:16

shit myself. I was gonna say, better not doing

15:18

your homework. So I thought, you know what? I'll go and get a curry.

15:21

So I had a curry. I'll relax myself. Yeah.

15:25

I'm sorry. So anyway,

15:27

I've got to some studios the next day. I'm there.

15:30

I'm in the studio. Trevor's really,

15:32

if you've ever met Trevor, he's quite intense.

15:34

I mean, he didn't know me that well. Obviously he's like, all

15:36

right, mate. And I was like, yep. And we're talking to

15:39

me. He's really intense. And he's like, we're gonna do this. We're

15:41

gonna do that. And I'm like, right, okay. I'm feeling

15:43

a little bit, you're queasy. Oh,

15:46

you did meet in the next occasion. I

15:50

said, I'm gonna go

15:51

to the toilet. Is that all right? And he went, yeah,

15:53

yeah, yeah. And I didn't know at this point. I

15:55

didn't know you guys were doing the progress album. I didn't know you were recording.

15:57

I just remember Robbie saying that you guys might.

15:59

be doing something I didn't know Robbie that well then either really

16:02

yeah I'm thinking and there's been

16:04

rumors that day they said to take that might

16:06

be in the building to

16:08

be unbelievable if I met the boys anyway

16:10

I've gone into the toilet I'm

16:13

sat in there and as you can imagine a whole

16:15

world's fallen. Ohhh! Yes

16:18

exactly! But

16:22

anyway I hear the flush go

16:24

the one next to me

16:27

I'm thinking oh shit

16:29

it was I thought it was in there yeah

16:32

anyway I've come out the cubicle

16:34

and there's this gentleman standing there washing his hands

16:37

and I've looked in the mirror and it's you! Oh my

16:40

god! I've walked to the tap

16:42

and I've gone fuck it's Gary!

16:46

It's Gary fucking brother! This

16:49

is the truth you turn around to me and you went

16:52

that fucking stinks! I didn't know

16:54

what to say I walked in

16:55

to see Trevor I told

16:57

Trevor the whole story and

17:20

he was like I'll just shut up come on go and sing yourself!

17:24

He was a little compressed as well when he

17:25

told you it was like a battery! I

17:27

was jealous! No

17:30

it was angry! That's

17:32

not progress! That

17:34

is strange! I think

17:36

that is terrible! That's time we met! I'm

17:42

on this podcast to apologize! I'm

17:44

sorry! I was a bit creative!

17:48

That is terrible! That

17:51

is terrible! That

17:53

shit did happen! I really wanted to make sure

17:56

I got that story! Oh my god!

17:59

Oh, that is a brilliant

18:02

story, but how was the session afterwards?

18:04

Oh, I mean, do you guys ever work

18:06

with Trevor? Do you ever meet Trevor? Did you ever do any work with

18:09

him? Well, funnily enough, my

18:11

studio was in that building for five

18:13

years. And it's funny, I never

18:15

quite got over bumping

18:17

into Trevor around the place because

18:19

I was really brought up on his music.

18:22

You're the same. We always talk about

18:24

Trevor. I mean, it's just for anyone

18:26

who doesn't know, go and Google Trevor

18:28

Horn. It's crazy

18:30

because he because he was really

18:33

the guy who brought

18:36

the future into the present. He

18:38

was so... It was the first video

18:40

of... I'm going to kill the video so I'll get

18:42

the name wrong. The Buggles or the Buggles?

18:45

It was the first video we played on MTV. Which

18:48

by the way, here's a little bit of trivia. Who else

18:50

was in that band? Hans Zimmer. Really?

18:53

Yeah.

18:54

Wow. I don't know for

18:56

sure if that's true, but it would be brilliant. It

19:00

would be brilliant if it was. No, it

19:02

was because Trevor told me a great story

19:04

one day. He told me he was in the time.

19:08

And he did a curry. He did a

19:10

curry one before. You

19:14

never get out of it. You never get

19:16

out of it. But Trevor... But

19:20

Trevor, honestly, it was my first

19:22

ever recording of the song. It

19:25

was a song called A Million More Years which made the album.

19:28

He butchered me for three or

19:30

four hours. You know when you... I

19:33

don't know, it's for you guys. But obviously

19:35

when you go as a solo artist, I was

19:37

butchered for four or five hours. What does that

19:39

mean then? It means that if

19:41

I work hard, it's like, Right, verse. We need

19:43

to go to verse now. So it was like, take

19:45

of a verse. It's like, I'm not

19:47

happy with that. Do it again. Oh God, really? That's

19:51

probably how we... No, but it was

19:53

great. Looking back now, I was only

19:56

talking about this recently. It was

19:58

really like, this guy is the man.

20:00

This is how it is. And every session

20:02

after that was always different, every producer did that

20:04

and they worked songs differently. Almost like an apprenticeship again.

20:07

Yeah, and he was almost like, oh you

20:09

think you come from the X Factor, you know, this is

20:11

the real stuff now. Right. I'm

20:13

surprised you're a great singer though. Yeah

20:16

I know, but it was really intense, but

20:18

he got the best out of me and he said to me, look

20:20

if you're going to make it in this industry you've got to give me

20:22

everything, you've got to give me the best. Yeah, I'm just, I know

20:24

I was an S, I was 25, I was an S6 lad,

20:27

I was a bit of a cheeky chappy, I was a bit like, you know, I

20:29

can't wait. He was a bit like, no come

20:31

on, we're here to work now, this is your first album, this

20:33

is massive. Yeah. I want to make

20:35

this right. And so he really like tuned in, we

20:38

nailed it, we smashed it. But yeah, that

20:40

was, that was, that was how he was intense.

20:41

But then I, I felt when I left it, I thought,

20:44

I didn't know if I'd,

20:45

if he'd respect you, I didn't know what, I didn't

20:47

know if he really liked, you

20:49

know, if he was

20:50

happy or whatever. And then I remember a few years

20:53

later, I bumped into him in Notting Hill, just down the road,

20:55

we just walked past each other, and he was like,

20:57

hi. And he gave me, we had a ship

20:59

hands, we had a little hug and, and it was sort

21:01

of like, oh, I've earned his respect. Like, he's

21:03

seen my career develop and he's like, yeah. Well,

21:06

also some people out of the workplace are often

21:08

different too. Yeah. I think

21:10

in his studio, in his domain, he's probably Trevor,

21:13

and then when he's out on the street, he's just a normal. Because

21:15

if I remember rightly, at the time it was like,

21:17

oh, can I bring my manager in and I can I bring, no, no,

21:19

no, no, no, it's just me and you. Right. And

21:22

that was one of them, like, you cook, like, we don't want

21:24

anyone in here. No moral support. Yeah.

21:27

I remember. It was great.

21:28

I remember, like, there are certain

21:30

people, I think, I remember you talking about something like

21:32

Max Martin, who, when you're in the studio,

21:35

there are certain producers out there who really,

21:37

isn't Max, Max, do you like them every

21:40

single. Have you worked with Max? No. He's

21:43

a brilliant singer. I mean,

21:45

honestly, when you hear him sing, I don't

21:49

think I've heard anyone better, a male

21:51

vocalist. He grew up listening

21:53

to like ACDC and he

21:55

always wore a leather jacket. He's really

21:57

into rock,

21:58

but not like nowadays. like

22:00

rock when they used to have like tenor

22:03

soul, the rock singers used to be

22:05

soulful he had a brilliant voice, when

22:07

you listen to Backstreet and the records he makes,

22:10

it's him, he produces

22:13

them to sound like him and

22:15

he is literally, I only did one

22:17

song with him but he is literally like syllable

22:20

by syllable. But I found that when I worked

22:23

with some of the Scandinavian kind of producers,

22:25

they really wanted

22:27

like, can you go back and just change that slight

22:29

note there, I want it to go there and you're like, yeah

22:32

right and I'm thinking I can't really hear what you want

22:34

me to do but I'll go and do it. I think it's something

22:36

to do with the language and it's not their first

22:38

language, they want to hear the sound more

22:41

than the

22:42

what it's saying almost. And also,

22:44

just quick one, that was me saying, but I was going

22:46

to say Steve Austin. Well

22:49

I was about to say the league with

22:51

all the legends, the amazing

22:54

Steve Robson. He would love us talking about

22:56

him because when I came off the

22:58

X Factor and obviously got signed and was in writing

23:00

songs and all my hits came with Steve

23:03

and obviously seeing you guys did shine with

23:05

him. We do something with Steve

23:07

on every one of our records. And that album

23:10

Circus and Beautiful World, them

23:13

albums guys, that would be part of my life,

23:16

them albums because that time I think

23:19

Beautiful World came out, was it 2007? Yeah,

23:23

it's 7 and then Circus was two years. Yeah,

23:27

so they were big years for me. I

23:29

was finding music and said it

23:31

all, it's like... Steve Robson?

23:34

Yeah, well I couldn't believe it. I was

23:36

sat in the studio talking to him, he talked about shine and

23:38

that and he goes, you know, and I was going to have this song, said it

23:40

all and he goes, that's me.

23:42

The Deaf of the Boys, no

23:44

way. So there was a lot of times

23:46

during that period I was just like, God, we

23:49

can... How many years have you been in the business? No, 14.

23:52

That's how many years. Did you

23:55

celebrate the tenure? I did do

23:57

a hit album in 2019.

23:59

It was called You Know, I Know. It

24:02

was more, it was actually frustrating for me because

24:04

I've been with Sony for quite some years.

24:07

And we just, it was a part of the deal

24:09

that I signed that they wanted to do a hits album.

24:11

We talked about this earlier. And I said,

24:13

I'm 10 years in, I'm not a hits album,

24:15

yeah. I'm still, I feel like I was still

24:18

having success. I didn't really feel like I needed to

24:20

do it, but they were like, we want you, we need you to do it. Oh,

24:22

for God's sake. So then we wrote

24:24

a second, we wrote an album on top of the hits

24:26

album. So we wrote this song called You Know,

24:29

I Know, which I wrote with Steve. And I just liked the idea of

24:31

saying, well, these are the songs that you know. And these are

24:33

the songs that I've written now that I know. The

24:35

concept of the album was two

24:37

separate Ollies. You got the old Ollie and the new Ollie

24:39

together. It was kind of like a hits album, but not

24:41

saying hits. Yeah, sure. And

24:43

it was okay. I love the album I wrote, but the,

24:46

doing hits album that I, for me any 10 years

24:49

wasn't the right time. But, you know, when you're

24:51

under a contract with a label, it was kind of, I didn't really

24:53

have a choice really. It's a shame. How many

24:55

records have you made now? I've just finished

24:57

my seventh, I think. Yeah,

25:00

seventh album, sure. Quite a

25:02

fabulous. Yeah, and I never forget

25:06

after my shit story. I

25:09

never forget my first album came out. My

25:12

first, that first time I did with Trevor came out. And

25:14

it was, I mean, back in the, this

25:16

is 2010.

25:18

And, you know, back then

25:21

I didn't really know. I didn't really compete against anyone.

25:23

So I've released my first album thinking first

25:25

album. Just had number one with my please let me go. My first

25:27

thing I'm thinking getting new albums

25:30

coming out. It's been tipped is going to go number

25:32

one.

25:32

And then literally the week of the album coming

25:35

out progress, take that.

25:38

What's the same? And your numbers, I mean, I

25:40

did like a hundred and remember I've got like 120,000 albums

25:42

sold in a week. Which

25:46

is mega. I believe that. Which is mega.

25:49

They're like, and my label like, would

25:51

have been a number one any other week. So

25:53

you know, you

25:55

know, take that reform. What? They've

26:00

done a quarter of a million in the first week. I'm like,

26:03

oh my God. And I thought,

26:05

they won't have a great second week. Did

26:07

they? Fuck. Right.

26:10

I've waited all that time. I'm never touring with

26:12

them. I've never won. Never. I've never

26:14

toured with them. It was brilliant. It was a good time. It

26:17

was a great time. Yeah.

26:29

Now Ollie, we have a little link because

26:31

we worked together for a few years on the

26:33

TV with the beautiful Caroline

26:35

as well. And we were with Dermot

26:38

earlier today. Yeah. And he said,

26:40

in fact, he wrote about it in his book, that

26:42

we love acts, but you

26:44

could definitely pick your friends because

26:48

certain people you're like, no, and you,

26:50

yeah, you'll do. And you were a very,

26:52

you know, it was new for me being on

26:54

a panel like that. You both

26:57

looked after us so well. You're so

26:59

respectful to us. And

27:02

in an environment, and actually a culture

27:04

at that time where everyone was kind of backstabbing

27:06

one another, you always had our backs and we

27:08

always loved spending time with you. And

27:11

actually more telling than that, I thought

27:13

was how much the artists loved you

27:15

guys as well. They saw you as real

27:18

friends. And I think, cause you'd been

27:20

a contestant on there. You

27:22

need to feel supported

27:25

and confident. And you always gave so

27:27

much time to them. Well, they were great years.

27:29

And it was good for us cause

27:31

we did the extra facts at the time. Yeah. It

27:33

was a bit more relaxed and a bit like, well,

27:36

the way that we wanted the show to be when I came

27:38

in, cause I didn't do any presenting, but Caroline

27:41

and the ITV saw a vision, Simon

27:43

saw a vision of me being in there. So

27:45

we wanted to create that sort of tier five Friday

27:48

kind of vibe. So when you guys used to come down,

27:50

it was like, yeah, all the

27:52

stuff that's going on. We look forward to it. Yeah. And

27:54

we could read Caroline's sense to that. And

27:58

bless her, you know, when,

27:59

you know, whatever.

27:59

happened in the last few years with Kaz and

28:02

passing away in 2020. I actually got to write

28:06

something in my book on my tour

28:09

in 2019, the hit tour. And when you,

28:12

it was hard for me to talk about it, but she actually

28:14

writes in it that then the times that we had

28:16

in them years that we worked together with the happiest that

28:19

she had, but they were the happiest for me as well.

28:21

We had such a laugh with you

28:24

guys. You were chattering, you had

28:26

fun with you, you had Nicole, we had everyone

28:28

was just a really good feel good atmosphere.

28:30

And I think that's what extra factor created and what

28:33

me and Caroline loved. And it really actually helped

28:36

my career as well as I think people get into

28:38

knowing not just my music, but they got to know

28:41

me. It was just brilliant times. And

28:43

yeah, X factor was great.

28:46

It was great

28:49

fun. I did enjoy it. For me,

28:51

I always want to feel like I'm learning something.

28:53

And I definitely came away from that shelf feeling

28:56

like I've learned a few bits and pieces

28:58

I didn't know before. And I hope for me anyway,

29:00

I've obviously gone on and worked on the voice as

29:02

well and worked on different shows. But

29:04

you know, it's something really for me anyway, being

29:07

an ex-contestant of reality shows.

29:09

And you can, you know, you're artists as

29:12

well. And you, I think when you can give something

29:14

back and help someone have a chance at maybe

29:16

having what we've done in our life and

29:19

our careers. That's what I love about them

29:21

shows. That's what that's for me is the

29:23

reason I love doing them. Yeah. So you're

29:26

on tour with us next year, new music as

29:28

well. I haven't really thought this is all a

29:30

bit quick for me. I'm not sure at the moment. Okay.

29:33

When's the last album?

29:34

Just finished it. Yeah. Well, where we came out last year,

29:36

we're number one. Okay. Well,

29:39

I'm happy with that. But the tour

29:42

was brilliant. It's the marry me tour. It's important that

29:44

number one. It doesn't matter. It doesn't

29:46

matter what anyone says. When they're like, this doesn't matter what

29:48

it does. Yeah. I think as artists, yeah.

29:50

Just like to have it. Doesn't matter how many it

29:53

sold. It doesn't matter how many weeks

29:55

it's at number one. I think it's knowing that the album for 52

29:58

weeks of the year, one of them weeks.

29:59

was my album and I think that's something

30:02

I really, and I think when you look back on

30:04

years to come that's something you'll remember. To

30:06

me it's about giving your fans, choosing

30:09

your set list. Yeah and obviously some of my fans that

30:11

are gonna come along as well. I think you've just given

30:13

them a really fun show. It's not the first time we've been

30:15

on stage together, do you know that? Do you remember?

30:18

We played with you in High Park. Well

30:20

yes, sorry, yeah. I was just trying to think of when we were together,

30:22

yeah. I did a concert, I had. I supported you

30:25

guys at the Barkley card, wasn't it? Yeah,

30:27

it was a long time ago, that was

30:29

an amazing, and I remember being back stage

30:32

and going, wow, do you have anything to say? I got that on

30:34

DVD actually. Oh I do. I

30:36

got that on DVD and I've watched it a few times

30:38

because I'm not watching myself perform very

30:40

often because I think you could be tired of it. We don't, we

30:42

don't. Yeah and you go all night. And

30:45

I watched it back because it was such

30:47

a, I mean I couldn't believe, I

30:49

mean I've done lots of gigs and I've done many gigs,

30:52

but that was one of the best ones just because

30:54

I couldn't see the end of

30:57

the people. But at the back I thought, for God actually,

31:00

where does he stand? But the other thing is that's our

31:02

crown. We feel so lucky because every

31:04

night's like a Saturday night. Oh, it was

31:07

fantastic. And I just thought. They can't

31:09

wait, honestly, I promise you. I see

31:11

these messages when it was announced

31:14

and I know we've had tickets on set.

31:16

Everyone's been like, this is the perfect

31:18

night. But we're thrilled. Thrilled. It's

31:21

gonna be awesome. The crown's getting in early. Yeah,

31:23

yeah, yeah. Okay, well look, listen,

31:25

enough about me.

31:27

I'd like to ask you guys some questions.

31:29

Well actually just one question each actually. Okay.

31:32

Same question. I'm gonna start with Howard. Okay. What

31:34

is your proudest moment

31:36

of being in Take That?

31:38

Go on, mate, you go first. Oh, go

31:41

on, you go with it. There's not one thing that just

31:43

comes to you straight away. There's so many, I mean,

31:46

I guess the first thing that comes to my

31:48

head is never forget going to number one. There

31:50

you go. And me singing the vocals, so it's, you know, I

31:52

was very proud of that. Very proud to be

31:55

asked, because obviously Cass wrote the song, and

31:57

you know, and it was

31:59

such a great song.

31:59

It's an epic song now and it's such a celebratory

32:03

song. Huge. And

32:05

it gets played out in lots of universes as

32:07

well. Question. Just question, now then. Noooooo!

32:11

When did you... I know it's a really simple

32:14

bit of choreography, but it works

32:16

every single time. It was literally in a rehearsal

32:18

that, wasn't it? Just before we went out on the road.

32:21

It would have been,

32:22

I'm sure, probably about Howard and Jason. Yeah.

32:25

They were... They were like, yeah. And

32:27

the whole crowd did. Yeah. So what you guys

32:29

were obviously racing at, the coronation? Yeah. Yeah.

32:33

I think we might have knew that bit from We Will Rock. Ooh!

32:36

I've never heard of that before. I've

32:39

never heard of anything like that. Well, that

32:41

you go. Proudest moment. You

32:44

know what? My proudest moments are not

32:46

the obvious ones. There's one

32:48

moment, I refer to it, and

32:51

I think about it a lot, is that when

32:53

we get... The 90's a little bit of a blur

32:55

for me. It was a very fast... It's

32:57

probably like your early years. You

33:00

feel like everything's going at

33:01

a million miles an hour. It's like

33:03

when you perform a show that you don't really

33:05

know, and both show four or five,

33:08

it's starting to slow down a bit. It's

33:11

not being speeded up. And there was a

33:13

point when we came back as a four-piece

33:16

in 2006. We'd sold

33:18

all these tickets. Everyone was excited.

33:21

But we hadn't been on the stage together for 10

33:23

years. Wow. We went

33:25

out, we were playing in Newcastle, and

33:28

there was a bit where we went down to the B stage,

33:31

so now we're surrounded by this

33:33

audience. So it's the first time we've been

33:35

back on stage. We're all terrified. And

33:38

there was just a moment where we got down

33:40

there, that everyone went in a circle,

33:43

and I could see Mark. I could

33:45

see Jay.

33:47

I could see Howard. And

33:49

behind them was just chaos.

33:53

People going mad, you know. I

33:55

just thought, how did

33:57

we get back here? I couldn't

33:59

believe it.

33:59

it because we were back.

34:02

The place was going up, it was going

34:04

mad and I thought this isn't gonna

34:06

end anytime soon. What a great song as well to

34:08

come back with patience as well. It

34:10

was just a moment and so it was

34:13

not an award or anything it was looking at

34:15

us now in this new situation ten

34:17

years later realising this

34:19

is the start of another

34:22

chapter. Incredible. Thank

34:24

you my man. I think I mean

34:27

there have been so many moments obviously

34:29

over the years for us as a band but I think for

34:31

me when I think of like

34:34

a moment that I'd just go like that

34:36

was really special was probably the progress

34:38

tour. Did you get to come and see that? You know

34:41

what? It was so weird you said that.

34:42

As you were talking

34:44

I thought you're gonna say

34:46

progress tour because I watched

34:49

the progress tour this week. No. Yeah I had

34:51

to watch it again because it was the only take

34:53

that tour that I went to, the first take that

34:55

tour I've ever been to and it was 2011.

34:59

Yeah. So I watched the one in Manchester

35:01

and I came to the show and I think

35:04

there's a moment when I watched it on TV actually

35:06

and especially you you could just there

35:08

was a moment when you all got together on stage and

35:10

you could just see it was looked around for

35:12

in Manchester I think. Yeah. I could

35:15

just see in your eyes particularly because you were sort of in the

35:17

middle and you were like

35:18

this feels good. Yeah I think it was

35:20

probably singing that we've got again

35:23

we rolled along on this

35:24

on we called it this robot on we

35:26

got to the middle and we sang

35:29

never forget I think we sang and

35:32

the five of us were there Rob was obviously back

35:34

with us and this thing stood up and put

35:36

its arms up and it was just a

35:38

beauty looking around and seeing everybody

35:41

on stage together

35:43

you know for me was a really

35:45

proud, proud moment. You could say that yeah. It's

35:48

the human things that touch us rather

35:51

than the going up and crowning a Brit Award

35:53

or something it's this you know we've known each

35:55

other for so long those guys longer

35:58

than I've known my wife

35:59

far-wise we've all known

36:02

each other longer and so we

36:04

when we are in moments like that it's

36:07

it's how it feels now do you

36:09

there's just a couple of things before you I know you go

36:12

Barlow's bingo do you know about this I have

36:14

no idea Oh yeah

36:17

wait and see I'll

36:20

be pulling out my balls now

36:32

get ready yeah also I'll be bringing

36:34

some wine with me as well I don't know if you drink one of

36:36

tribe there you go so so we'll have a little

36:39

can't wait Ollie thank you on the

36:41

road

36:55

well that was nice what a lovely

36:57

surprise what a gent great I'm

36:59

so daddy looks so well I've got

37:01

married

37:05

okay I'm gonna be thinking about all now I'm

37:07

gonna be laughing oh

37:10

my goodness that is

37:15

I mean perfect right I

37:17

mean what I mean I always think

37:20

that the when you're touring and you're

37:22

entertaining I think I think the feeling

37:24

starts

37:25

before you go on the stage before you

37:27

even arrive at the venue and you can

37:29

already feel like we're gonna be a nice family

37:31

yeah you can see okay yeah we're

37:33

written you know you know that Ollie is game

37:36

for a laugh yeah and you know there's gonna partake

37:38

in any little thing back yeah yeah

37:41

it's gonna be follows bingo yeah it's

37:43

gonna be fun yeah and for the audience I

37:45

think it's gonna be

37:47

great so guys

37:49

the album's out tomorrow Wow and

37:51

it's been a journey right it's been a real

37:53

journey that started

37:55

for me when we turned up in Nashville

37:57

yeah in a cold Nashville it was January

37:59

was my minus two degrees January

38:01

wasn't it? It was January when we turned up

38:04

at a studio called RCA Victor which

38:06

Studio B which is where one of my

38:08

favorite artists of all time Elvis

38:11

Presley recorded so many of his records

38:14

and then Dolly Parton the Ebbly Bullards the

38:16

people that had been through that studio. I think Elvis

38:18

recorded over 200 songs in

38:20

that studio it was very well known

38:23

that Elvis used to keep his eyes closed when

38:25

he was singing his songs in

38:27

fact there's one of his records where you actually hit

38:29

in his head on the mic.

38:33

So what he used to do is because he didn't

38:36

want any distractions while he was singing he used to have all

38:38

the lights in the studio turned off and

38:41

when we went there they had

38:43

like a tourist thing.

38:47

But they had tourists in there and they were sat

38:49

in there and they did the turning of the lights down

38:51

so they could see what it felt like but it was

38:53

a beautiful studio. A beautiful

38:56

stunning room and the band immediately

38:59

all got into position. Dave Cobb,

39:02

our producer who's produced

39:05

some amazing records

39:06

for me people like Chris Stapleton, Bandicar

39:09

Lyle I know everybody's got favorite records

39:11

that he has done. He did the Star is Born

39:13

movie, he did Lady Gaga and at

39:16

the back it was like 20

39:17

zillion copies sold of the

39:19

album Star is Born. I mean

39:21

yeah and it was pictures of him and Gaga

39:24

in the room. So there was no pressure no

39:26

pressure. Really nice

39:28

guy. When you meet somebody like that and you know

39:31

straight away as soon as you meet him you know it's quite a pressure.

39:34

And it was literally like one two three

39:36

four and the song started and guys

39:38

started singing and it was just like this

39:41

is it. Yeah and you

39:43

know what people often ask about

39:45

you know we've never met this guy before. We

39:48

don't have any

39:49

link to him. He's from Savannah.

39:52

Yeah. But I always say the

39:55

language of music is

39:57

what means you can communicate instantly

39:59

with somebody and he got

40:02

it and we were actually only there as

40:04

a sort of let's try it out, let's meet,

40:07

let's see if we like one another because obviously making

40:09

an album he's going to spend a lot of time with somebody.

40:12

We were there literally just saying hello

40:14

but he had his guitar

40:16

up and we were cutting records

40:19

straight away. No messing. Yeah,

40:21

I mean again being

40:23

in his house in Savannah

40:26

feeling so homely you know

40:28

you're away from home, you're away from your family

40:31

but you're in a house and you're not in this studio

40:34

environment, you're in different rooms for different

40:36

things, different songs and I thought

40:40

that was so inspirational the way

40:42

that he does it and it was also inspirational for us

40:44

the way we made the album. You felt like you

40:46

were in America didn't you in Savannah? So

40:49

did. So Savannah's Dave Cobb's home

40:51

that's where he actually is from and

40:54

that's where he lives, spends most of his time

40:56

and he's converted a house

40:58

there for anyone

41:00

who doesn't know. The coastline

41:03

of Georgia, the east coast

41:06

is actually a collection of islands, hundreds

41:09

of islands and the very first

41:11

island as you leave Savannah the city

41:14

is a place called the

41:15

Isle of Hope and as you cross

41:17

that bridge

41:19

his is the first house right there and

41:21

that's where the recording studio is and that's

41:23

where we did our recordings that Howard's talking

41:25

about and it's also where

41:28

this amazing sport first

41:31

began for us, you, magnet

41:34

fishing every day.

41:37

As soon as I saw that magnet I thought

41:39

my jetty I thought

41:40

I've been here before, I've got my own

41:42

magnet. So do you know what? We're all. I've

41:47

got two different sizes. Can I set this up out?

41:50

So Howard basically, he's

41:52

a real fiddler Howard is. He

41:55

is, he's a real like, if there's

41:57

an ashtray he'd be setting stuff

41:59

alight.

41:59

around that salad. He's a real

42:02

menace isn't he? I've not changed since I was

42:04

a kid by the way. He's a real menace. He is.

42:07

My mum used to watch me all the time because what I would

42:09

do in the gas fire you know you get the soot. I

42:11

don't remember you have a gas fire you

42:13

get you'd have a soot and they're little stone things

42:15

at the back and I'd have a knife from the kitchen knocking

42:18

all the soot off. I'm burning things

42:21

next to the fire with like little rubber tires

42:23

on the cars. You are a menace.

42:25

You're a menace. You really are. I'm a mania.

42:28

And then you are. I thought you

42:30

love things like that magnet and

42:32

I knew as soon as they slung it I thought oh that's ours.

42:35

That's it. He's gone. He is. And

42:37

every time I went down to the jetty

42:40

which is right at the end of his garden right

42:42

there was the estuary

42:45

that eventually got into the sea.

42:47

So it was a big magnet wasn't it?

42:51

It's a big magnet and they'd throw it in there

42:54

and then very slowly pull

42:57

it back. But unfortunately for us

42:59

whilst we were recording one of the sound

43:01

engineers he'd casted

43:03

the magnet out in the direction that I

43:05

wanted to cast out in. Yeah. And

43:08

he pulled up a full. I

43:11

don't know if it's working but they'll get it with a chainsaw.

43:14

Full chainsaw. A chainsaw which is about how

43:16

long is that about? Yeah. How long would we say? Three

43:18

four? Three four. Yeah. Massive

43:20

chainsaw. Full chainsaw. Obviously some workers have

43:22

been working on these jettys and obviously

43:25

thought oh this is not working let's just throw it in the

43:27

river. Or they dropped it accidentally. Possibly

43:29

yeah. And all we got was nails and bolts

43:31

on it. Bits of the roof. Bits of that

43:34

aluminium roof. But I have to say if

43:36

anyone ever did

43:39

go there it's a brilliant place.

43:41

Because interesting for us that you know

43:43

we're

43:44

in Soho at the moment

43:46

and it's you know it's tricky to walk around London

43:49

for us especially together. We

43:51

had breakfast every morning in Savannah.

43:54

It is. Just the three of us. Yeah. Which is

43:56

very unusual for us to not have a

43:58

gang of people around us. It was. just the

44:00

three of us. We turned up there, I'm amazed

44:02

we found it. The Taxi Diver that you started

44:05

to go whoo whoo whoo, turn

44:07

up every night later now, we're trying to put someone in the boot.

44:10

So much comedy. So much character. So

44:12

much comedy in this place. We

44:15

had a great time. It was a really nice

44:17

time for us to eat at Hangres. It was

44:19

an important time. You need that

44:21

on albums. You need thinking

44:23

time. Albums take thought.

44:26

Deep thought. Because

44:28

our audience, any audience,

44:31

they're smart. They can hear when

44:33

things have been thought about and

44:35

thought through and perfected

44:38

and we had time to do all

44:40

that then. It was lovely. Really

44:42

nice. And we also got

44:44

David, because it was his town. We

44:46

had the pleasure of him taking us out to... He

44:49

was showing the town off. Yeah.

44:52

And he's taking us some amazing places

44:54

where we eat or... Great restaurants. Great

44:57

restaurants or like go and look at

44:59

some great streets. We had the best

45:01

tour guide. Well he was saying that... And his lady.

45:03

He was saying, yeah, his wife. He

45:06

was saying he was European. She knew

45:08

us. Yeah. You know, better than

45:10

he did. Yeah. And

45:12

he was saying that the reason the restaurants

45:15

were so... because they're so amazing,

45:17

some of those restaurants. He said

45:19

during the pandemic, a lot of the big

45:21

chefs in New York, there's a big

45:23

exodus from New York in the pandemic, a

45:26

lot of them left, came home to Savannah and

45:28

have never gone

45:28

back. Wow. Because they've

45:30

enjoyed being back home. Because I think a lot of people...

45:33

we talked about the pandemic before.

45:36

I think a lot of people had a

45:38

bit of an epiphany during that. Yeah, reevaluation.

45:40

A really valuation. Yeah. Yeah. And

45:43

one of the little fun facts about Savannah, we all

45:45

know, is the film

45:47

which Tom Hanks was in. Oh,

45:49

it's gone. Oh, it's gone. It's there, isn't

45:52

it? The bench is there, where he sits next to

45:54

the lady with his box of chocolates. That's right.

45:56

Yeah. Well, it is exciting. We can't wait for everyone

45:59

to hear it.

45:59

I can't wait for everyone to react to it, because

46:02

that's...

46:03

obviously we want people to

46:05

hear this and enjoy it. It's

46:07

going to be the album we'll be playing on

46:09

tour next year. We've

46:13

got

46:13

performances coming up, I know, over the

46:16

next few weeks that we're going to be singing this

46:18

new music. It's just lovely, isn't it, to have new

46:20

music around us. Yeah, it's

46:22

really lovely to still be able to do

46:24

things like this. And

46:27

I have actually loved your company on

46:29

this podcast. It's been a wonderful thing. I hope

46:31

we do it again. I hope this podcast is a great

46:33

success, because this is much

46:36

better than I thought it would be. Actually, sitting

46:38

around... No, seriously, I know they're

46:41

all laughing in the background. Seriously,

46:43

sitting down with each other, finding out things

46:45

about each other that we may never have talked about

46:47

before. And that's kind of what I wanted to get

46:50

from this podcast. Closure.

46:53

No, I don't want to be in the band anymore. Yeah,

46:57

I'm excited. And don't forget, everyone listening,

46:59

that we have a lovely crew around us, so

47:01

thank you everybody. Thank you, everybody.

47:04

Because they're lighting up with us. They're about to sit here

47:06

and listen to us gabble on about all this

47:08

rubbish. And they've been so patient,

47:11

so thank you. And thanks for listening at

47:13

home. And we really hope

47:15

you enjoy the new music. And I hope some

47:17

of the stories and the things that we've told

47:19

you over the last six weeks have helped you.

47:22

Maybe understand a few of the reasons why

47:24

we do what we do, why we love what we

47:26

do, and why we love making

47:28

new music for you guys who are listening

47:30

out there. And so I'm going to do my last link

47:33

here on the piece of paper. It's very

47:35

sad. And among the tears, I'm going

47:37

to say thank you all so much for listening to take that.

47:40

This life, we have loved making this

47:42

podcast and counting down

47:43

with you every week to celebrate the

47:46

release of our new record, It's Out Tomorrow. We've

47:49

reached that point. We really have. We

47:51

hope you have enjoyed our podcast and

47:53

that you enjoyed anyhow.
