THE CHALLENGE: Everyone has an insecurity about something. It may be one insecurity or several insecurities but we all have insecurities. I want to be honest with you and tell you about my insecurity. I haven’t found a permanent solution but I’ve found a couple of solutions that help with my insecurity little by little.

I’ve noticed something new about me that’s causing an insecurity. Sweaty Hands! When I get really anxious, my hands get sweaty. I notice this most in my workplace because of things like presenting, talking in front of people, or being in meetings where discussion is heavy and detailed. This causes me to get anxious and then my hands sweat. Then it happens that I need to shake hands with everyone! What are the chances. It’s embarrassing to either have to pass on a handshake or have the person witness me dry my hands on my shirt/pants before I go in for a shake LOL that’s if they still want to shake my hand.

Come to terms: Obviously my anxiousness won’t go away anytime soon so there’s a couple of things I have to tell myself every time this insecurity gets the best of me. 1. I need to figure out how I can solve this issue or at least figure out a temporary solution. 2 tell myself that my insecurities don’t make me less of a person. And 3. don’t be afraid to talk about it.

Solution:I found a few things that help and I want to share them with you in case this helps you or someone you know. Or maybe it helps you figure out how to process your own insecurity.

  • First thing is trying to manage my stress. After speaking with my wife about this problem, she suggested that I should create structure for myself when it comes to my responsibilities at work. Instead of just going in and tackling 100 things at once, I should to write down a few key tasks I plan to work on for the day and number them by priority. And tackle one thing at a time. Repeat daily.
  • The second thing I found helps is washing my hands with soap several times throughout the day. It helps dry up the moisture in my hands. I also keep hand sanitizer in my pocket.
  • Third thing is not being afraid to talk about my insecurity. From several interactions I’ve had, I learned that several people actually have similar things happen to them. Not all were sweaty hands but some break out on their face, some get sweaty armpits, and some even break out in hives!
  • None of these things make us less human. It does suck and it does cause us to be very self conscious but it shouldn’t prevent us from being ourselves and getting work done. And most of the time, someone is in the same or similar boat.

Wrap it up: I know having sweaty hands isn’t the end of the world but it makes me feel insecure sometimes. Has it stopped me from being me? Nope! The moral to this is to not let your insecurities take ownership of who you are. If what works for you is to change your habits or some other safe solutions then don’t be afraid to try them. Don’t be afraid to talk to someone about it either. They could have solutions for you because they can relate. Or maybe they want to be kind and help you figure out a solution. Whatever it is, just know we are not perfect. Don’t be afraid to continue being yourself despite those insecurities.
