Hi everyone . Sorry I haven't been doing any

0:28

podcasts lately , but I'm back

0:30

and we'll be doing a couple this week . Today

0:33

I'm going to talk about summer and swimming

0:36

. Summer's upon us and

0:38

we need to help our

0:40

little ones enjoy the water . I

0:43

read somewhere that it's one of the primary

0:45

deaths in drowning , with kids on the spectrum

0:47

, so we need to teach water safety

0:50

. So

0:52

the first thing you want to teach is we're going to talk about

0:54

practice . We want them to be able

0:56

to practice , and the

0:59

first thing would be waiting for a grown-up

1:01

. They need to learn that

1:03

they cannot go to the pool unless a

1:05

grown-up is with them . Second

1:07

thing is practice grabbing

1:10

a noodle before they enter the pool , or

1:12

some type of vest or something

1:14

before they enter the pool . And

1:17

the third thing to practice is walking

1:19

around the pool . You need to moderate

1:21

, model it and

1:23

go from to

1:26

the house and from and back so

1:28

they can kind of just practice a little bit before

1:30

they get into the water . So those are three

1:32

things that you need to do

1:35

with your little ones before

1:37

they even enter the water , and that's you

1:39

know wait for a grown-up , grab

1:41

a noodle and learn to walk around

1:43

the pool and be safe . Another

1:46

thing you could get is also is some water

1:48

shoes , things , and we'll

1:50

talk about that in a little bit and

1:53

then once you're in the water , the

1:55

second thing would be , once you're in the water , you want

1:57

to give them a little space to explore the

1:59

water , to feel safe , and

2:02

a good idea is to find an instructor that

2:04

is experienced working with kids on the spectrum

2:07

, and they do have them . We have one here

2:09

in Florida , where I live , and a

2:11

parent is going to send her little one to there

2:14

and if you can I know

2:16

you have to pay a little extra for this but get a

2:18

one-to-one instructor . They're

2:20

really not that expensive , but it

2:22

is well worth it to teach them

2:25

, because I know that if you

2:27

do have a pool or you go somewhere , usually

2:29

they have safety on the doors or rings

2:32

or something like that . But just to be on the

2:34

safe side , you need to train them

2:36

in these steps . Next

2:39

, I want to talk about sensory . If

2:41

a lot of people are in the pool , loud noises

2:44

, moving objects and some

2:46

textures can overload our kids

2:48

, so we're going to talk a little bit about that

2:50

. So the first one we're going to talk about

2:52

is vision Maybe the sun on

2:55

the water , you

2:57

know , bothers them the reflections

2:59

of the goggles . Goggles is a

3:01

good idea , but you need to get

3:03

ones that are reflective . Or

3:05

swimming early , or early

3:08

during the day or in the evening , if the sun

3:10

is bothering them during the day

3:12

on the water , that might be something that you

3:14

want to look into of what time you

3:16

go into the waters For

3:18

auditory . Water is loud

3:20

, can be loud , especially if you've got a lot of people

3:23

in the water at the same

3:25

time . So sometimes the loud

3:27

noises and splashing of the water can

3:30

overstimulate them . So find

3:33

an area in the pool that has

3:35

less people . You can also get

3:37

wax earplugs to help

3:39

them with the noise . So those

3:41

are two options you can do for auditory

3:44

. The other thing is touch water's

3:47

too cold or

3:49

the swimsuit is uncomfortable

3:51

. The texture of the bottom of the pool

3:54

there's difference in goggles

3:56

, those things that you have to kind of look

3:58

at and find out what it is that

4:00

they don't like . So one thing

4:02

that you can do is get swim

4:05

shirts or swim vest , and

4:08

that would be something that they could put on before

4:10

instead of grabbing a noodle . Maybe a swim vest

4:12

, form-fitting suits

4:14

, swimsuits that are not real baggy

4:17

, or anything that fits like a second skin

4:19

, is another option . Swim

4:23

shoes , which I mentioned before , is

4:26

another good idea to put on if

4:29

the bottom of the pool or going down

4:31

the pool , the steps , bother their feet

4:33

, and goggles that collapse

4:35

in the back so they don't

4:38

have to , you know , they can kind of not

4:40

bump off in their face

4:42

is another idea

4:44

, especially if they want to go under the water , maybe

4:46

some goggles would be a good idea . So

4:49

this is a short little one for today . I

4:51

am going to do another one later today

4:54

or tomorrow , but I just wanted

4:56

to go over some of these . For

4:58

summer coming up and swimming , and I know

5:00

a lot of the kids . They love the water , but

5:02

we also have to practice safety and

5:05

so do those things that I said

5:07

. Practice those things

5:09

and give them time to

5:11

explore the water . Maybe set a time

5:14

where there's nobody in the water that give them a

5:16

little time to enjoy the water . Or

5:18

maybe one or two kids , if they have a sibling

5:20

or something , to get them started

5:22

in the waters . But even if they've

5:24

been swimming , still practice those

5:27

things . If you live in a state

5:29

where you know it's cold

5:31

in the wintertime and so you're

5:35

not swimming . You need to refresh

5:37

those ideas

5:39

that I gave you to make sure that they are safe

5:42

. Okay , so that's all

5:44

for today , and I hope

5:46

you guys are having a blessed week . I

5:49

am . A lot's happened to me

5:51

this last week , and so

5:53

I got a new car . I

5:55

remember I told you my car broke down . I don't know if

5:57

I did , but anyway . So I ended up getting a new

5:59

car , so I'm going to be doing a little more work

6:01

with my autistic kids . Anyway

6:04

, I hope you guys have a blessed day and I will talk

6:06

to you real soon . Bye-bye .
