Welcome to this week’s ICYMI, where we kick off the week with a quick game-changing tip from one of our guests that you might have missed.
Horrible layoff stories are trending on TikTok right now, led by badass Gen-Zs like Brittany Pietsch who worked at @Cloudflare, who are filming and posting their virtual firing meetings.
And I’ve been there. From being shepherded into a room like cattle where dozens of colleagues and I were unceremoniously laid off by HR, to managing my boss’s calendar as their meeting to lay me off was scheduled into it — I know a thing or two about the emotional damage of getting laid off by a company you worked your ass off for.
So we're throwing it back to my layoff experiences that I shared in season 1, and everything I learned from it. The most important thing? You actually can’t blame yourself or allow it to inform your identity and self-worth. It’s a numbers game that has nothing to do with you — maybe you were the most recent hire, or you make $1K more than your teammate. Often, the people who you work closest with, like your manager, aren’t even involved in these decisions.
Getting let go is devastating, but it’s also an opportunity to reevaluate. Use this as a chance to build a solid strategy for your career trajectory. Get intentional about your purpose and your job values, and only apply to opportunities that check those boxes.
