Let your light shine.com slash masterminds. We're waiting for you.
3:37
It's time to let your light. I actually had not planned to give you this episode.
3:44
And I was sitting on my back porch this morning. It's a Saturday morning.
3:48
I never record podcasts on Saturdays.
3:51
And my husband took our youngest daughter to soccer, and my oldest daughter,
3:55
she has volleyball this afternoon, a big tournament.
3:57
And I'm sitting out on the back porch, and...
4:01
I'm writing in my journal. It was like, okay, I have to share this.
4:07
I have to share this with you guys.
4:10
And I am just overwhelmed with the emotions and the amount of events that have
4:19
taken place and what God did to help me through this super hard season.
4:24
And I share this with you because I want to be real with you.
4:27
And it is exactly why I wanted to start Micro School Masterminds because I needed
4:37
so much support and you know what's really interesting is that even though I
4:43
didn't plan on this episode at all, I was just completely moved after I wrote in my journal and I'd been praying and I was like, you know,
4:51
I am going to go record this episode.
4:55
I'm supposed to be going on a walk but I have to do it.
4:58
And then I thought, okay, when is this episode going out? Oh,
5:02
it's going out on Tuesday. My 40th birthday is the day that this is airing.
5:09
And I'm like, wow, this is a total God timing because here it is.
5:17
Not that it's like, woohoo, it's my birthday.
5:19
I don't, I'm not trying to be like that.
5:22
I'm trying to say it's my 40th birthday. It's subconsciously,
5:27
I was hoping and praying and dreaming that I would be able to have this community.
5:35
And I'm so grateful that here we are. Yes, Teacher Light Your Light Shine has
5:39
been here for a few years, coaching and all the community that we built through our Facebook group.
5:45
But then just having micro school masterminds, it's just really a dream come true. And I.
5:51
Going to start with what happened a year ago, which is what happened whenever I started journaling.
5:57
One year ago, it was April, and something just was not feeling right in my family.
6:04
I couldn't quite put my finger on it. And our school at that time, if you guys have been around here for a while,
6:12
you know that we had a school that started in our house with six kids,
6:15
and then it was 12 students, and then it became 18 students our third year.
6:20
And this was last year, our third year. We were ending the third year.
6:25
We had 18 students at our house every day, three additional adults plus myself.
6:30
There were 22 people and a dog. And 21 of those people shared one bathroom because our bedroom and our bathroom
6:37
was on the separate end of the house.
6:41
At this point, literally our entire house was used for the school.
6:45
School truthfully the entire house was used
6:48
for the school and I was feeling
6:51
like I didn't know if I should grow
6:54
but I didn't want to keep the school at this capacity
6:58
in my house I didn't have a location
7:01
yet I had been looking for a location for a
7:04
couple years my husband and I had been putting offers in
7:07
on homes that we thought had enough land so we could build
7:10
the school nothing was panning out we
7:13
weren't we didn't have the cash to pay
7:16
for the house the half a million dollar house as it
7:19
was in Florida at the time we weren't able you know we were going up against
7:24
cash offers things were just not panning out location wise but we were grateful
7:29
for what we had we had a park in our neighborhood that we utilized it was great
7:33
until it became a little little bit too much to be honest with you. But it was fine.
7:38
I moved my office into my bedroom. I hired two people became three people that
7:44
really ran the show for me. And thank God, I had those people before I even knew how much I really needed those people.
7:52
They ran the show for me while I was in my bedroom, pretty much the majority
7:57
of my day, taking massive action on things that I didn't even know how to take
8:05
action on, to be honest with you. So we were ending this big growth year. It was April of last year, 2023.
8:13
And to be honest with you, I was a little bit wore out because my daughters
8:18
had both started in December, January. They had both started travel volleyball, travel soccer.
8:25
We were not accustomed to that at all.
8:27
Every single weekend we were traveling, like we were gone.
8:30
We were dividing and conquering and we were grateful to do it.
8:35
We had been, you know, it's expensive to put your kids in travel ball,
8:39
which is something that we really weren't a family that was committed to doing
8:45
that, but our kids really wanted it. We were able to financially support them in this endeavor.
8:51
But the time that it was taking was something that we were not accustomed to.
8:57
We also found out through, I told you that there were some things that just didn't feel right.
9:03
And it was mainly to do with our oldest daughter.
9:06
She was finishing her first year of high school.
9:10
She was in a high school of 3000 people. people.
9:14
Now, I graduated with 100, like less than 100 people in my class.
9:19
So I'm not accustomed to that. My husband, he went to the same high school that she goes to.
9:23
It was just overall a super big high school, a very overwhelming experience.
9:29
She was like the light of the school all throughout elementary, whenever I was with her.
9:34
Middle school, that's when we kind of started to see a turn.
9:37
That's really whenever I thought, I do not want to continue my children in public education.
9:44
I don't like the way that this feels. I don't like the way that this looks.
9:48
I don't like the way that it sounds. Then COVID happened. I started homeschooling my daughters. My oldest daughter,
9:53
she did very well during homeschooling, but she was lonely. she didn't have
9:58
peers her age. It was a house full of younger students.
10:02
She went back into public middle
10:04
school. It was the only option that we had, you guys. It really was.
10:09
I wish we would have had something like what we have now for her.
10:13
I wish that there were other programs, other high schools that would work really well for her.
10:19
She's introverted. She's extremely talented. she's gifted.
10:22
But we are where we are. She likes having her socialization.
10:27
But the school part, it's terrible.
10:30
I'm not gonna lie. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it.
10:33
We have to pay for a lot of things on the back end.
10:36
And I don't have a solution for that right now.
10:39
And I hope that you guys understand that there will be times in this journey
10:43
and in your parenting, you're just not going to have the solution.
10:46
And you're just going to have to wait it out and take action,
10:49
action, action until you figure out what works best for your kids,
10:55
what works best for your family. So my oldest daughter at the end of last year, we could tell something wasn't right.
11:01
And we went took her to the doctor, her energy levels were really low.
11:06
She just wasn't the same. I could tell physically, she was just kind of changing.
11:12
Mentally, spiritually, everything just felt as if it was not the same.
11:18
Let's just say that. Many, many doctors, many homeopathic doctors,
11:22
many vitamins, many supplements, autoimmune deficiency, so many doctors appointments,
11:29
so much lab work, so much, so, so much.
11:33
So many doctors appointments, so many people.
11:37
Something happened with her knee. I needed to, she was missing so much school.
11:42
I needed to get a hold of so many teachers, have meetings at school.
11:46
It was a really rough season in April.
11:51
And we had been noticing some things were changing for a couple of months.
11:55
I spent a lot of time, a lot of time in my bedroom office.
12:04
Not laying on my bed, not sitting in my chair, literally behind the computer,
12:08
trying to get help for my daughter and not knowing when we had not even been
12:16
to the doctor for her, had to go to the doctor in seven years, perfectly healthy.
12:22
And then things just were not right.
12:28
And we, my husband and I, were trying to figure all this out.
12:31
We've got a house full of kids. We've got 21 people here every day.
12:37
And I knew we needed to find a new location for our school, but nothing was moving. Nothing.
12:46
Again, two people, Ms. Correa, Ms. Ansel, they basically ran the school for me.
12:51
Yes, I was there. I was leading. I was guiding. I was helping out with students.
12:55
I was there. I was working with students as much as I could,
12:58
but mentally, I was in a whole nother world.
13:04
I knew we needed to find another place for our school. I knew I needed to hire.
13:08
If I was going to find another place for our school, I needed to grow our school
13:11
to get more students. And if I was going to grow our school to get more students,
13:14
I was going to need to hire. Plus, I needed to figure out what was going on with my daughter.
13:19
Then on top of that, I needed to know whether or not I was going to offer middle
13:24
school school because my youngest daughter was going into middle school.
13:27
I had a slew of kids who are fifth graders that their parents were asking me,
13:32
are you going to do middle school? And I was like, I'm not prepared for this.
13:35
I'm not prepared with my daughter being sick. I'm not prepared with the new location.
13:39
I'm not prepared with all of the changes that are taking place in my life.
13:43
I'm not prepared for hiring. I'm still running Teacher Let Your Light Shine as well. I'm coaching several several people.
13:50
And I'm feeling a little bit overwhelmed.
13:54
I'm foggy. I'm in the middle of a transition.
13:57
I need clarity. I don't have clarity.
14:00
Everything feels completely out of my control.
14:04
But it really wasn't. There were things in my control.
14:07
And this is where I'm telling you, I and my husband took massive action.
14:14
We're talking we went massive action, even though We were fatigued.
14:20
We were not aware of anything that we were doing.
14:25
Like none of us, neither one of us had ever walked this path before.
14:30
And it was just a heavy, dark time, but we still took massive action.
14:38
And that's something that I thought about today because I'm like,
14:40
how did we get through that? How did we get through that time of so much uncertainty, so much pain?
14:47
I remember the teachers would take the students to the park each day.
14:53
And I remember specifically one day they had just taken them to the park and
14:57
I had been working on a big project for Lighthouse Learning.
15:01
I had been working on the Yass Prize grant. So on top of this,
15:04
I'm trying to get grants because I knew we were gonna have to get a location.
15:08
And I had been working on a big project, I'm standing at my kitchen sink, and I'm crying.
15:13
I'm crying. I'm washing my hands. And I'm just so desperately sad about my daughter,
15:21
because I did not know how to help her with what she was facing.
15:28
I knew she was facing so many changes mentally.
15:31
Her body was physically wore out. We found out, like I said,
15:36
that she had autoimmune deficiency, but we didn't know what all that meant.
15:39
I was trying to make all these new recipes. I was just giving every single vitamin
15:43
and supplement that I possibly can. We were eating complete fresh foods. We were having doctor's appointments with
15:50
homeopathic people that were saying, eat this.
15:52
Other people were saying, eat that. Don't do this. Don't do this.
15:56
Go to this doctor. Then she had a little skin issue going on that we had to
15:59
go to two doctors for that.
16:02
It was just a little bit overwhelming.
16:08
And on top of that, like I said, all these people in my house,
16:14
which, hey, I was loving it.
16:17
But I'm thinking, are we going to move? Are we not going to move?
16:20
If we don't move, we can't keep it like this, like it.
16:24
Let's just say you get what I'm saying. The wonderful thing was,
16:27
is that we had a a substantial amount of income.
16:32
Having the school in our house and busting at the seams, keeping my overhead
16:37
low was literally so substantially impactful for our revenue.
16:44
And it was working. Let me tell you, it worked year one, it worked year two,
16:49
it still was working year three. But I knew we weren't gonna work this out year four.
16:53
It was, we were at capacity, it was done.
16:57
I never wanted it to be out of my house.
17:00
I always wanted it to be in my house until the demand got so high that I was
17:06
like, okay, I can't turn these kids away.
17:09
I don't wanna close the doors. I love having Lighthouse Learning.
17:12
I love having it in my house, but we can't keep it up at this rate.
17:17
So we're gonna have to move out. And I was sad because I didn't wanna move out. I actually liked having it in
17:22
my home until it was just, we were combusting and God allowed that to happen.
17:29
And I also knew, like I said, not only do we have to find a house or a house,
17:35
or then that was the thing is our vision started changing.
17:38
Are we gonna do a house? Are we gonna get this land? Are we gonna get a big
17:40
barn? Are we gonna do this whole outdoor learning from our backyard?
17:43
Or are we going commercial building? I didn't wanna go commercial building,
17:47
but I was like, I guess at this point I have no choice.
17:50
Choice I'm calling around to different churches I'm emailing
17:53
different churches I'm getting all sorts of people on the phone and it
17:57
felt like nothing was working but actually there were things working so
18:00
a lot of times whenever you're taking this action you do not realize you may
18:05
not get your answer that day you may not get your answer that week but you're
18:08
still taking action it's just like whenever you're planting a seed in the soil
18:13
you don't see what's happening underneath underneath the surface.
18:18
And there's a whole bunch of work going on inside to help that plant to burst
18:23
out of the seed to grow and to become a fruitful plant.
18:28
That's exactly what's happening. So if you are taking action,
18:32
and you're seeing that you are not getting the results, you cannot give up,
18:36
you have to keep taking action.
18:39
There were so many things that were happening in my daughter's health that we're
18:44
like, we're trying all these things. It's not working. We're trying all this. It's not working.
18:48
We just kept trying.
18:51
And it clicked. Happy to say that she's healthy. She's 16. She's got her car.
18:57
She's a little frustrated that she's had to put so much gas in her tank this
19:01
this past week because she did not realize just how much it costs whenever you're
19:06
riding around with all your friends. And I gotta tell you, it's hard to make a plan when you don't know what kind of plan you're making.
19:15
But I will say this, when things are meant to be, they will be.
19:19
So I'm sitting in my office predominantly every single day calling locations,
19:24
emailing, trying to plan for middle school, trying to plan out hiring,
19:28
trying to plan out end of the year activities, trying to understand our finances,
19:32
I knew there was money there. The money kept coming.
19:35
Slowly, people were interested in our school. But again, it was in my house,
19:39
I had all these people, people were inquiring because they knew that our state
19:43
was about to approve the educational savings account.
19:46
I didn't know what that was. I didn't know how to handle that.
19:50
So I spent a lot of time trying to research that. I spent so much time researching,
19:55
researching about my daughter's health, researching about locations,
19:59
researching about hiring, researching about middle school, researching about finances,
20:04
researching about educational savings accounts.
20:07
Researching about a new invoicing system. What was happening?
20:11
I was just going, man. I was just taking action.
20:15
Even though I was confused, I didn't have clarity. I didn't have answers.
20:21
I just was, even though in between crying sessions,
20:25
in between tears, in between calling my parents, in between calling my in-laws,
20:32
in between calling my sister-in-law, in between calling doctors,
20:35
just keep going, keep trying to figure it out.
20:38
And it reminded me in the scriptures, God says, ask and it shall be given to
20:42
you. Seek and you shall find.
20:45
Knock and the door will be opened. Ask, seek, knock.
20:49
In the middle of so many prayers, on top of that, I was having so many nightmares.
20:55
I was really facing a mental battle.
20:59
Then this, of course, took a toll on my marriage because I am just working so
21:05
hard on the business, working so hard to figure things out about my daughter.
21:08
And then all the time that we're spending on the weekends with travel,
21:12
all the time that we're spending outside of school hours, going to doctor's
21:17
appointments, homeopathic, trying to figure out all these recipes,
21:20
trying to make new meal plans. I'm like, what did we get ourselves into?
21:25
This is a lot. I will say my husband and I did take a lot of bike rides.
21:30
That was, that was was helpful. When I say a lot, I'm saying maybe two or three a week, which was good for us.
21:37
It was really, really helpful. And then, you know, there was just so many prayers.
21:44
And I will say that getting the word out really helped so much.
21:49
I just kept calling people. I kept asking about locations. I kept emailing.
21:54
But at the end of the day, I also was tired. I also had a lot of other other
21:59
things going on in my personal life. And that's why I'm saying.
22:02
God's grace took care of us.
22:07
And when it's meant to be, it will be. Even if you have to go through trials
22:11
and tribulations, it will be.
22:15
And there are things that are going to scare you. There are things that are going to come up.
22:19
And I look back and I'm thinking, thank God I had people that I had already
22:23
hired. Thank God I had really good systems in place.
22:26
Thank God I was just continuously able to take action. and through that I will
22:33
say that I was really trying to take care of my health.
22:37
I was definitely taking so many vitamins.
22:40
I was trying to get rest but really I wasn't because I like I said I was having nightmares.
22:45
I was really scared for my daughter and then in May so this happened in April
22:51
we started figuring out a lot of things taking a lot of action getting a lot
22:56
of people on on board to help us with our school, getting things ready for the next year.
23:00
We got a storage unit. We just started clearing things out. I'm like,
23:04
honey, I don't know where we're going to go, but I know we're not going to stay
23:06
here. Start getting the stuff out. Start moving the stuff. So we got a storage unit and slowly but surely we were moving books.
23:14
We were moving school supplies. We were moving furniture.
23:17
We're like, we don't need this in our house anymore. As soon as school's out,
23:20
we're turning our house back into a house and we're going to figure out where
23:22
our school's is going to go. But right now, we just know it's not going to be here.
23:25
And come May, here it is, one of the busiest seasons, end of the year banquet,
23:31
trying to close out, get everything out of our school.
23:35
My sister, my youngest sister was graduating.
23:38
And me and my daughter got super sick. My youngest daughter.
23:45
I had not been sick in about 10 years. And I got so sick. But you know know the weird thing?
23:52
Even though I was so sick, I still got up out of bed.
23:56
I still went on a walk and I still worked tenaciously to make plans, to figure things out.
24:05
In the middle of me sweating, in the middle of the fevers, in the middle of
24:09
the drained energy, God equipped me to keep moving. I miss my sister's graduation.
24:18
I miss my time with my family. It was sad. I'm not gonna lie. It was super sad.
24:24
The good news is, is right after I got sick, it was the end of the school year.
24:29
Very last day of school, I'm thinking, okay, it's the last day of school.
24:33
Like we're all just gonna go out to eat. Me and my family, we're all just gonna figure out what's gonna happen next.
24:39
My husband gets home, and he's like, you wanna go to Ikea tonight to get some furniture?
24:44
And I was like, no, I don't wanna do that. He's like, hey, baby,
24:49
let's go. I'm ready, I'm moving, it's time to get our house back.
24:52
So we had already moved pretty much everything out of the house,
24:55
you know, because the last couple days of school were just party days and banquets
25:00
and just going to the park and going to get ice cream.
25:04
And I said, okay, let's go. We got our daughters. We went and got chipotle. We got in the van.
25:10
We went to ikea You guys we left ikea thousands of dollars later And i'm telling
25:16
you i'm not telling i'm not saying this to brag like we had i'm telling you
25:21
we had saved our money We were in a really great place financially.
25:25
We had already saved our money so that we could get furniture.
25:27
We got rugs We hadn't had rugs in three years We got a couch.
25:33
We hadn't had a couch in our den. We got a new TV. We got new storage.
25:38
We got new things for our daughter's bedrooms. Like we were like,
25:42
guys, this is it. We're getting our house back.
25:45
We are doing things that we haven't been able to do in a long time.
25:50
And I'm here to tell you, listen, it wasn't a miserable thing having the school
25:55
in our house. It was just time.
25:58
It was just time to change. It was time to grow. and I actually never wanted
26:02
it to, but here we were. It was just a circumstance that we were in.
26:06
And then after that, I would call it a slam dunk summer.
26:11
And I mean, I was slammed and yes, it was great, but it was not so great because
26:16
I had never done this before. And I didn't know exactly what to
26:20
have in place, which is why micro school masterminds, I am like diligent.
26:25
Moses had to go through it, man, to get the people to the promised land.
26:29
And I had to go through it. And I'm like, I am not letting people get to the
26:33
promised land without help. So in the middle of the summer, I'm diligently working on the Yass Prize grant,
26:39
which we didn't get, that's okay. My daughter was starting to get well, but my kids did not have camps.
26:47
Okay, now they had a little couple of things here and there.
26:49
We did not go on a family vacation because of all of the rigmarole that had
26:55
happened January through May, I was not prepared for what was coming in the summer.
26:59
When the governor passed the educational savings account, our school blew up with inquiries.
27:06
And I did not have someone necessarily by my side who could take my spot to
27:12
figure out how are we gonna invoice? How are we going to understand about the educational savings account and all
27:18
their handbooks and all their policies. What are we gonna do with hiring? How am I going to hire?
27:24
I've hired before, but now we've gotta take massive action in hiring and we gotta get a location.
27:29
Thankfully, because of word of mouth, someone had contacted me,
27:33
we found a location, but then as you know, the day before school started,
27:37
the pipe burst in the building and we had to, again, take massive action.
27:42
And within two hours, now listen to this, In two hours, we found the Promise Land School building
27:49
for this year, but for three years, I had been hustling my butt off to try to
27:53
find a location, and with two hours, we found this beautiful location. Isn't that something?
27:58
I'm telling you, it's just a crazy thing.
28:01
Sometimes, you don't even know that you need help until you need help.
28:05
Finally, I called my assistant, Ms. Correa, and I said, listen,
28:09
I need you to help me with these students who are getting enrolled.
28:12
I need you to go give them assessments. I'm busy hiring. My husband was helping me hiring. We went through this whole
28:18
entire creating a hiring system.
28:20
My husband was calling people. He was qualifying them in, qualifying them out.
28:24
I was meeting them at Panera Bread.
28:27
He was coming with me. We were meeting at Starbucks.
28:30
I was calling Omela Brett, who is in charge of Omela. It was a brand new invoicing system.
28:39
I tried a new invoicing system this year. It worked until it didn't work.
28:44
So we are, again, back into really, we got narrowed it down to two really amazing
28:49
opportunities to invoice and create an entire interface system.
28:54
But listen, I was trying to do all that on my own this summer. It wasn't fun.
28:59
I don't recommend that. And that's exactly why we have Microschool Masterminds.
29:04
Thankfully, I will say, we had the location, even though we had a pipe burst and flooded flooded.
29:12
The day after our open house, praise God, we had an open house.
29:16
We walked into a flooded building. We moved our school.
29:19
We've been there this entire year. I'm going to be honest with you.
29:22
Yes, it was the promised land location this year. It is absolutely beautiful. It's breathtaking.
29:27
We have everything so well laid out, all of our systems, our processes.
29:32
But the thing is, is we're still growing. We have to make a choice on how much
29:39
we're going to grow in order to be able able to stay in that location.
29:42
The building is for sale that possibly sells what are we going to do we have
29:46
to make plans we do have plan B we do have plan C.
29:49
But here's the thing, the location, I get it. It's a real deal.
29:55
There's so many students. Now, our program even changed throughout the year.
30:00
But thankfully, we've had cash reserves, we've made more money financially in
30:06
our school, I've been able to hire I've been able to have more time.
30:10
And because of that, hiring staff, getting more time, I was really able to do,
30:17
what I had been longing to do for so long.
30:20
And that was to create an online community of courses, because I knew there's
30:25
so much for you all to know. Having a couple group coaching sessions isn't going to cut it.
30:31
Like we're here for the long haul. We're here for the longevity. We need to be in community together.
30:37
We deserve to be together learning and growing and establishing really great lives.
30:45
This is not getting to the mastermind and get what you need for a month and
30:48
get out. No, you're in it for the long haul.
30:51
I mean, I hate to tell you what you're gonna do, but I'm serious about it.
30:55
There is really great information as soon as you get in,
30:58
but what's even better is the time that we get to spend together and the ongoing
31:03
amount of resources that you are going to continuously get when you get into
31:09
Microschool Masterminds. Yes, there's already tons of videos and information for you,
31:14
But it's just going to continue to grow and grow and
31:17
grow and our time together is going to grow So
31:20
i'm so grateful because i'm thinking it's my 40th birthday
31:23
And I said to myself before I turn 40 I am going to have an online community
31:28
and i'm going to have courses because I know This is the only way that I can
31:32
truly help people to the degree that they need help so Taking this away As I
31:39
looked at my journal I said Oh my goodness at the top of it.
31:43
It says for the page that I had written on.
31:45
And we know that all things work together for good to those who are called according to his purpose.
31:53
What allowed us to get through what was this dark time, tough time,
31:59
was taking massive action and knowing that this was God's purpose for my life.
32:04
The outcome was strength, it was blessings, it was knowing, okay,
32:08
God, you made it happen. This is my purpose. purpose.
32:12
Action is absolutely required. I was reading so many books on spirituality,
32:16
so many books on faith, because my faith, I did not have the faith that I wanted to have.
32:21
So many books about business, so many books about scriptures.
32:24
And one book I read was Think and Grow Rich. And Think and Grow Rich talked about how important it was that you have a mastermind.
32:31
And I was like, I'm going to create a mastermind. I'm going to do it before I'm 40.
32:35
And then really, Really, honestly, I kept trying to figure out ways that it
32:41
wasn't the right time. It wasn't the right time. And I'm like, no, you said you were going to do it before you're 40.
32:46
Go take action. Make it happen. And I can tell you, whenever we launched Microschool
32:51
Masterminds, it was not at the opportune time.
32:55
We had just had our open house. We just had open enrollment. We're hiring.
32:58
We're hiring for summer camp. We're hiring for more positions in our school.
33:02
School I've got tons of people that I'm coaching
33:05
but I'm like I'm doing it I'm taking action otherwise what am I going to do
33:10
do nothing no that's not what this life is about this life is about us doing
33:15
what we're called to do and God will bless us and yes there's going to be times
33:20
where you're going to feel like you're walking in the darkness and I hope you
33:23
don't feel like you're walking alone. And I want you to know that I'm so grateful to be with you. I'm so grateful to have you in my life.
33:30
