The Aging Brain: A Lesson on Alzheimer’s Disease

Summary This lesson is meant to review and strengthen the concepts of brain anatomy and memory and link these concepts to Alzheimer’s disease. To complete the activities in this lesson, students should have prior knowledge of nervous system terminology and function.

Learning Outcomes
• Students will be able to label and draw a brain and all of the general lobes and regions, including temporal, occipital, parietal, frontal, amygdala, hippocampus, brain stem, and cerebellum.
• Students will be able to describe the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.
• Students will be able to explain and illustrate the differences between a healthy brain and a brain with Alzheimer’s disease.
• Students will be able to list ways to reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
