In June 2016, American Joshua Holt traveled to Venezuela to get married. But just a couple of weeks later he and his wife, Thamara, woke to the sound of police officers pounding on their apartment door. As part of a crackdown on crime under the government of Nicolás Maduro, they were rounded up and taken to El Helicoide, a now-infamous prison in the heart of Caracas, known for torture, physical violence and overcrowding.
