Welcome to 10 Minute Bible Talks. Where we connect

0:07

the Bible to your life. In the time it takes

0:09

to get to work. I'm Patrick Miller. You

0:14

either follow Jesus or you don't follow

0:16

Jesus. You're either getting closer to God

0:18

or you're getting further away from God.

0:21

We like our binaries and we like them

0:24

for good reason. They shake us up. They

0:26

shake us out of our spiritual slumbers. And

0:29

they awaken us to the possibility that

0:31

our lives may be headed in the

0:33

wrong direction. We like our

0:35

binaries because Jesus himself sometimes spoke

0:37

in binaries. Check this out. Matthew

0:40

12.30. Whoever is not with

0:42

me is against me. Whoever does

0:44

not gather with me scatters. But

0:46

he spoke in other ways. Sometimes

0:49

it sounds like he says the opposite of

0:51

that. When someone who wasn't following Jesus started

0:53

casting demons out in his name, he didn't

0:55

say all in or bust, buddy. Instead

0:58

he said this to his disciples. Do

1:00

not stop him. For no one who

1:02

does a mighty work in my name will be

1:05

able soon afterward to speak evil of me. For

1:07

the one who is not against us is for us.

1:10

It's almost the opposite. Apparently,

1:13

you can stay half-hearted for a time.

1:15

But Jesus expects that time will pass

1:17

and you will either move on or

1:19

move in to the kingdom. Studying

1:22

the kings in the book of Chronicles

1:24

makes this principle clear in action. Consider

1:27

this strange verse 2 Chronicles

1:29

25.2, and King Amaziah did

1:32

what was right in the eyes of the

1:34

Lord and yet not with a whole heart.

1:37

What does that mean? He did the right

1:39

things for the wrong reasons? Or

1:41

perhaps it means that his devotion

1:43

to Yahweh was superficial and sporadic.

1:46

Or perhaps it's just an honest assessment

1:48

of his life. An assessment that

1:50

can be made of many lives. We

1:52

all give God half as much as he

1:54

deserves and care half as much as we

1:57

should about him. This verse is

1:59

not in the Bible. Give us a pass.

2:01

It's in the Bible to give us a

2:03

mere so that we might realize that even

2:05

if we were kings and queens, We.

2:07

Could hope to do little better than

2:09

we do right now. But even more

2:11

importantly, it's a window. If we

2:14

see past Amazon we will see

2:16

forward to the future king from

2:18

his lines who did not live

2:20

with half hearted devotion. Jesus. You.

2:23

See Jesus lay down his whole life

2:25

in obedience to his father and the

2:27

author of Hebrews said he did so

2:30

for the joy set before. He

2:32

died with a whole heart for the whole

2:34

world so that he could one day raise

2:36

up whole hearted humans in a world made

2:39

whole by his was. No,

2:41

I hope you can see what's so different

2:43

about your wife. And Amazon has eyes. You

2:45

can see clearly what was only a

2:48

fog. The Messiah your hope is set

2:50

before your eyes. His hope was but

2:52

a shadow of what's to come. And

2:55

because you know the hope that is set before

2:57

you. You. Are freed to start living

2:59

today like the future is in the presence

3:01

but differently. If you know that you are

3:03

destined one day to have a whole hearts

3:06

and if you know that God's spirit within

3:08

you wants to give you a whole heart

3:10

today, the why do you play around with

3:12

all the sins it isles? The keep you

3:14

from giving your fourth hole devotion to Jesus.

3:17

As Cs. Lewis once put it, were

3:19

like children playing with mud pies when

3:21

we could be enjoying a pleasure cruise.

3:24

To get out of this predicament, we must learn

3:26

to see the mud for what it really is.

3:29

The truth is that we all fear

3:31

missing out on something if we give

3:33

up the sex or drink or gossip

3:35

or materialism. agreed, or course, joking that

3:37

keeps us halfway committed to God. We

3:40

know a day is coming when we want

3:42

indulge in such things, and so we figure

3:44

it's better to enjoy them all the fun

3:46

Last. But this. Makes haven't into

3:48

a how and the hell out of heaven.

3:51

If we indulge ourselves and last greed and

3:53

selfishness, we are plunging ourselves into a lake

3:55

of flames it pretending that it's a nice

3:57

hot spring. It's. Not nice. It's

3:59

the. If the flames wish to

4:01

return you to dust so you must

4:04

develop in yourself a distaste For said

4:06

if you want to be wholehearted he

4:08

must develop a true discussed with on

4:10

righteousness. This doesn't mean becoming self righteous

4:12

towards others and judging others, it's about

4:14

judging yourself And how could you judge

4:17

others when you see the same sickness

4:19

in you he sees you want to

4:21

be a whole hearted disciple of Jesus

4:23

you need to be able to call

4:25

mud mad. If you can't

4:27

do that, you will never be able to

4:30

enjoy the pleasure cruise of righteousness that Jesus

4:32

is offering you. But that's the flip side

4:34

of things. You also had to develop a

4:36

taste for righteousness. My two kiddos

4:38

are very different eaters. My son Oliver loves

4:40

to eat just about anything. My daughter Iris

4:43

is a bit more picky and so one

4:45

of the things I talk with her about

4:47

because I used to be a picky eater

4:49

to is that you have to try new

4:51

things if you want to enjoy them. and

4:53

some vegetables might look really gross, but it

4:55

turns out that when you eat them and

4:58

they're properly prepared, they're quite delicious and so

5:00

I'm constantly encouraging her to develop a taste

5:02

for new things. And this is exactly what

5:04

needs to happen in Us. As

5:06

a result of the fall, we all

5:08

have a natural taste for crotty macaroni

5:10

and frozen pizza and processed foods. Of

5:12

course, we all want that. That's what

5:14

we've been raised on. That's what it

5:16

means to have sin and your wife

5:18

from your birth, from your earliest moments

5:20

and what God wants to do. Say,

5:22

I have something so much better for

5:24

you. but you need to develop the

5:26

taste. You need to get a taste

5:28

for the goodness of holiness, the goodness

5:30

of righteousness, the goodness of justice, love

5:32

and mercy. You. See if you want

5:34

to live with a whole heart your whole heart has

5:36

to want would Jesus has to offer and you won't

5:38

wanna if you don't have a taste for it. You.

5:41

Want shoes? The Good: Napa Valley Wine

5:43

If you've only had yellowtail and you need

5:45

to ask God let me experience righteousness

5:47

and enjoy it and develop a taste in

5:49

my life. For it's to that I can

5:52

be a wholehearted follower of you. Ten
