Hey everyone, Easter is right around the

0:02

corner. It's pretty early this year. And

0:04

you might not realize this, but traditionally

0:06

Christians prepare themselves for Easter through what's

0:08

called Holy Week. We want

0:11

to help prepare you for Easter by putting

0:13

together an email devotional. Every day of Holy

0:15

Week you're going to get an email that's

0:17

getting you ready to celebrate the death and

0:19

resurrection of Jesus. Make sure to click

0:21

the link in our show notes and we'll do that together. Welcome

0:31

to 10 Minute Bible Talks. Where we connect the

0:33

Bible to your life. In the time it takes to get

0:36

to work. I'm Patrick Miller. My

0:40

son can barely reach the water spigot in our

0:42

refrigerator. At first I thought that this was great

0:44

because he could get his own water and that

0:47

would save me tons of time walking from place

0:49

to place every single time that he was thirsty.

0:52

That's the upside. But there is a downside. The

0:54

downside is that he can't see when the

0:56

cup is full. And so overflows aren't that

0:58

uncommon. It means that even though he doesn't

1:01

need me to fill his cup, I still

1:03

have to walk there every single time he

1:05

fills it up so that I can let

1:07

him know when the cup is full so

1:09

that he doesn't overflow it and pour it

1:11

on top of himself. If

1:13

you're a parent, nothing about what I'm saying

1:15

is surprising. Even at their

1:17

most independent, children really are dependent.

1:19

They need help. I've often

1:21

wondered if this is something of what the

1:24

Bible intends for us to think about when

1:26

it challenges us to call God our Father.

1:29

It's not merely that we're a part

1:31

of his covenantal family and that we've

1:33

taken on his covenantal family name and

1:35

that we've been invited into the covenantal

1:37

family business. It's also that

1:40

we're a lot like four-year-olds in his presence. Often

1:43

we're overconfident about what we can do and

1:45

we end up overflowing our cups in the

1:47

process. We're a lot like four-year-olds,

1:49

even at our most independent. We're still

1:51

deeply dependent on him. Of

1:54

course, there's times when my son knows that he needs

1:56

my help, when he's hurt or when he's in danger,

1:58

when he's scared. He has no problem. calling out

2:00

for his father. And even as

2:02

adults, the same is true of us with God. When

2:05

we are hurt, when we are in danger,

2:07

when we are scared. Well those are

2:09

precisely the moments when we are more

2:12

aware of our need for our father.

2:14

We need his help. We need him to show up. We

2:16

need him to be present with us. Second

2:19

Chronicles chapters 14-16 tell the story

2:21

of King Asa, a king who

2:23

sought after Yahweh and he tore

2:25

down the idols in Judah. But

2:27

he reestablished the covenant with God

2:29

and he radically trusted God when

2:31

he was in danger like a

2:33

good four year old should. But

2:36

this story doesn't whitewash King Asa's story because

2:38

his story is kind of the tale of

2:41

two different kings. You see in one life,

2:43

in his early life, he's like that four

2:45

year old who knows that he needs help.

2:48

But in his later life, he's like an

2:50

overconfident four year old. He has no idea

2:52

how much help he needs and so he

2:54

doesn't ask for it and that ends up

2:56

getting him into trouble. You

2:58

see early in his reign, Asa faced a

3:00

tremendous threat, a threat that could have permanently

3:03

ended his kingdom. Let's pick this up in

3:05

2 Chronicles 14 verse 9. Zara

3:07

the Ethiopian came out against them with an

3:10

army of a million men and 300 chariots

3:13

and came as far as Marisha. Okay, we

3:15

got to pause for a second. That is

3:17

a really big army that is now marching

3:19

up to fight against King Asa in this

3:21

region called Marisha. I've been there, it's this

3:23

region of beautiful caves and I've actually been

3:25

on the plateau where Asa would have looked

3:27

out and seen this army of a million

3:30

people marching towards him and he's just a

3:32

tiny little kingdom with maybe a few tens

3:34

of thousands of soldiers. Verse

3:37

11, and Asa cried out to Yahweh

3:39

his God, O Yahweh, there is none

3:41

like you to help between the mighty

3:43

and the weak. Help us,

3:46

O Yahweh, our God, for we now

3:48

rely on you and in your name

3:50

we have come against this multitude. O

3:52

Yahweh, you are our God, let

3:55

not man prevail against you. And

3:57

so Yahweh defeated the Ethiopians before...

4:00

Asa and before Judah and

4:02

the Ethiopians fled. So this

4:04

invasion of Ethiopians ends up failing even though

4:06

they had much stronger numbers, a much more

4:08

powerful military. The reason why is because Asa

4:10

was like a four year old who knew

4:13

that he was in danger and he cried

4:15

out to his dad, protect me, save

4:17

me, rescue me. Later

4:20

God commended Asa for trusting him. But

4:22

given the circumstances, what choice did Asa

4:25

have? He was in danger and he

4:27

was totally incapable of protecting himself. Of

4:30

course there were other choices he could have chosen.

4:32

He could have run away and just given the

4:34

land to the Ethiopians. He could have tried to

4:36

do it himself and failed. He could have called

4:38

on some other God. There were other choices but

4:40

he does the right thing, the thing

4:42

that is commendable. He calls out

4:44

to his father. When Yahweh

4:46

commends Asa, it comes with a tinge

4:49

of warning. He doesn't say

4:51

because you've done this one thing, all

4:53

will be well in the future. Instead

4:55

he calls Asa to a lifetime of

4:57

childlike trust. We read in 2 Chronicles

4:59

15 verses 2-4 what a prophet said

5:01

to Asa. This is God speaking to Asa through

5:03

the prophet. Hear me Asa, and

5:06

all Judah and Benjamin, Yahweh

5:08

is with you while you are with

5:10

him. If you seek him, he will

5:12

be found by you. But if you

5:14

forsake him, he will forsake you. For

5:17

a long time, Israel was without

5:19

the true God and without a

5:21

teaching priest and without law. But

5:24

when, in their distress, they turned to Yahweh,

5:26

the God of Israel, and sought him, he

5:28

was found by them. And

5:30

in many ways, Asa takes this message from

5:32

the prophet to heart. He has

5:35

a long reign and experiences peace because

5:37

he is trusting Yahweh throughout that reign.

5:40

But 36 years into his reign, he

5:42

ends up growing self-confidence and very wealthy.

5:44

He was an experienced king at this

5:46

point and so he knew how to

5:48

deal with problems and that self-reliance turned

5:51

out to be poison for his faith.

5:54

Yet Another king comes against Asa and tries to

5:56

fight against him. But Instead of trusting God during

5:58

this war, he is a man of faith. Acer

6:00

send a big bag of cash to a pagan

6:02

enemy the King of Serious and he asks the

6:05

King of Syria to help him in this battle.

6:07

Afterward yet another profit comes to a

6:09

certain says this because he relied on

6:12

the King of Syria and did not

6:14

rely on the Lord your God. The

6:16

army as a king of Syria has

6:18

escaped. You were not the Ethiopians in

6:21

the Libyans, a huge army with very

6:23

many chariots and horseman. yet because you

6:25

relied on your way, he gave them

6:27

into your hand. For. The eyes

6:29

of your way run to and fro

6:32

threats the whole Earth to give strong

6:34

support to those whose heart is blameless

6:36

towards. You've. Done foolishly in

6:38

this. For from now on you will

6:41

have wars. Than. A So was

6:43

angry with the prophet and put him in the

6:45

stocks in prison for he was in a rage

6:47

with him Because of this. And. A

6:49

said for to cruelties upon some of the

6:51

people at the same time. So.

6:54

In the end, Acer not only ignores the

6:57

profit, but puts him in prison for speaking

6:59

the truth. He oppresses the people and in

7:01

a very short period of time he goes

7:03

from being a just king who pursues yeah

7:06

way. To. A corrupt king?

7:08

Be trusted himself. He

7:10

later died of a fever and even on

7:12

his deathbed he never asked yeah way for

7:14

help. This. Text doesn't

7:16

explicitly tell us what happened between

7:18

his youth and his old age.

7:21

But. I suspect it implies something

7:23

subtle because what we know this

7:25

period is that Isa grew wealthy,

7:27

his kingdom flourished, he had success.

7:30

And as many of these stories from Chronicles

7:32

teach us such experiences of wealth and success

7:34

and things going well. Well. Though

7:37

either make us grateful. Or. Proud.

7:39

God or alliance or self

7:42

reliance. What? Are your successes

7:44

do to you? Do. You need

7:46

danger in fear in your life to turn

7:48

to God. Or have you learned how

7:50

to turn to God in plenty? And.

7:52

And want, enjoy and and sorrows

7:54

in sickness and in health. Your.

7:57

Heavenly Father is not a helicopter pair

7:59

then he wants to do everything for

8:01

you. But. He does patiently wait

8:03

with you by the refrigerator to help

8:06

you make sure you don't overflow your

8:08

copper, put two little water. See.

8:10

On the surface, someone who relies on

8:12

God and someone who doesn't rely on

8:14

god may look the same. They may

8:16

do many similar things, but the question

8:18

is whether those things are done with

8:20

a supernatural presence in power. Or.

8:22

They done by means of self

8:24

reliance. This. Kind of power

8:26

cannot be present apart from a simple

8:28

disciplined. Prayer. Preferably consistent

8:31

prayer. Throughout the day, I practice a

8:33

daily ritual of praying in the morning,

8:35

in the mid day, and in the

8:37

evening. I do this. Usually I pray

8:39

through one or two psalms at any

8:41

given time. I wouldn't say that anything

8:43

magical happens by praying throughout the day,

8:45

in the morning, in the midday, and

8:48

for yo to sleep, but I do

8:50

become more aware of my father's presence.

8:52

I do find myself praying for what

8:54

has happened and what will happen. And

8:56

in doing this, I am protected from

8:58

my own sense. Of self reliance.

9:01

Not. Perfectly but far more than I would

9:03

be with only one prayer. and certainly

9:05

would be without any prayer at all.

9:08

Could. You and a similar habit in your

9:10

wife to make sure that you can trust

9:12

God and the best in the worst of

9:15

times, I want you to rely on him

9:17

like a child. And he will

9:19

bless you with his salaam, his joy in

9:21

his presence on every side. Thanks

9:26

so much for listening Today is this podcast

9:28

is helping you grow in your face. Would

9:30

you do me a favor? tax it to

9:32

a friend who you think might benefit from

9:34

it as well? Maybe you can put it

9:36

is time to discuss what's your of learning

9:38

from the podcast and more importantly what God

9:40

is doing in your search and in your

9:42

life.
