Welcome to 10 Minute Bible Talks. Where we connect
0:07
the Bible to your life. In the time it
0:09
takes to get to work. I'm Keith Simon. Are
0:14
you familiar with the term doom scrolling?
0:17
Doom scrolling is scrolling through the news
0:19
on your phone on the lookout
0:21
for sad or negative stories.
0:25
Some people doom scroll with a hope that
0:27
if they know all the bad things out
0:29
there, then somehow that will enable them to
0:31
prevent those bad things from happening to them.
0:34
Sometimes people doom scroll for so
0:36
long that they actually have physical
0:38
symptoms that arise. Things
0:40
like their heart begins to race, their mind
0:43
begins to spin, they can even have panic
0:45
attacks because of doom scrolling. I
0:47
think we'd agree that whether or
0:49
not we classify ourselves as doom
0:51
scrollers, we do come across a
0:53
lot of negative sad stories that can
0:56
steal our hope and leave us
0:58
discouraged. Is there any reason
1:00
to have hope when the world is full of doom?
1:03
Things like war and political crisis,
1:06
poverty, homelessness, drug use, anxiety, depression,
1:09
overdoses, sexual immorality. I
1:11
bet in your own life you know
1:13
people who have addictions, who are on
1:16
the brink of divorce, who are single
1:18
parents and are struggling, who have bad
1:20
health or broken relationships. I
1:22
mean maybe some of those things even describe your
1:24
life. In the middle of
1:26
all that, it's easy to give up hope.
1:28
It's easy to live in discouragement. When
1:31
I'm asked what makes me hopeful, I
1:33
return to one thing. Every
1:36
single time, I return to the resurrection of
1:38
Jesus. Jesus rose from the
1:40
dead. When it looked the bleakest,
1:42
when his followers had scattered and he'd
1:44
been crucified, at that point
1:46
God was at work. So
1:48
I tell people all the time, since
1:51
Jesus rose from the dead, I can't
1:53
lose hope. Christians can't lose
1:55
hope. We are people of hope. If
1:58
you've been following along on our trip through First 2
2:00
Chronicles, you might be discouraged. These
2:03
books record a lot of bad kings who
2:05
do evil in the eyes of God. Sure,
2:08
there are some good ones, but the bad ones
2:10
have them outnumbered. In the northern
2:12
kingdom, there are no good kings. Some
2:15
are worse than others, but the Bible never says
2:17
that any of the northern kings did right in
2:19
the eyes of the Lord. By
2:22
the time we get to the end
2:24
of 2 Chronicles, God has brought judgment
2:26
on those northern tribes by sending Assyria
2:28
the world's superpower to defeat them and
2:31
take them into captivity. Meanwhile
2:33
in the southern kingdom, things aren't
2:35
a lot better. 2
2:38
Chronicles 28 ends on a very bad note. King
2:41
Ahaz has destroyed the instruments used in the
2:43
temple worship. He has closed the temple doors.
2:46
He has ended all worship in the temple
2:48
so that there are no more offerings of
2:50
worship to God. At the
2:52
end of 2 Chronicles 28, things look
2:54
pretty bleak. When Ahaz
2:57
dies, Hezekiah comes to the throne
2:59
and everything needs a reboot. It's
3:02
interesting that chapter 29 starts
3:04
on a hopeful note. When
3:06
Ahaz dies, Hezekiah comes to the throne
3:09
and to be honest, the whole thing needs a
3:11
reboot. 2 Chronicles 29
3:14
starts on a hopeful note. It
3:17
says Hezekiah was 25 years old
3:19
when he became king and he reigned in Jerusalem
3:21
29 years. He
3:24
did what was right in the eyes of
3:26
the Lord, just as his father David had
3:28
done. The name
3:30
Hezekiah means may Yahweh
3:32
establish and then he
3:35
is positively compared to David. So
3:37
in all the mess and all the brokenness, what we
3:39
find is that God was at work. God
3:42
had not given up on His people. Hezekiah
3:44
starts with restoring the temple worship
3:46
but then his reforms move out
3:49
from the temple into the city
3:51
and eventually into the nations. In
3:53
chapter 29, Hezekiah purifies the temple.
3:56
Then in chapter 30, he leaves the people
3:58
in the celebration of the Passover. And
4:00
then in chapter 31 he collects offering from
4:02
the people and then in chapter 32 The
4:06
whole world notices that under
4:08
Hezekiah's leadership God delivers the
4:10
southern kingdom from the Assyrian
4:12
army But it all
4:14
starts with getting things right between
4:16
the people and God Hezekiah
4:19
reopens the temple and gives people access to
4:21
the king of heaven If
4:23
we really want to fix what's wrong in
4:26
our life the place to start is our
4:28
relationship with God See our
4:30
main problem is not a budget issue
4:32
an income issue Our main problem
4:34
is not a health issue or a job issue
4:37
or a people issue We
4:39
can try to fix those things and
4:41
fixing them might provide temporary relief But
4:44
our main problem is always between
4:46
us and God The
4:48
author of Chronicles isn't afraid to make
4:50
a direct link between the people's rebellion
4:52
against God and the hardship they find
4:55
themselves in Here's chapter 29 verse
4:57
8 Therefore the
4:59
anger of the Lord has fallen on Judah
5:01
and Jerusalem He has made them an object
5:03
of dread and horror and scorn as you
5:05
can see with your own eyes This
5:08
is why our fathers have fallen by the
5:10
sword and why our sons and daughters and
5:12
our wives are in captivity Hezekiah
5:15
calls all the people to
5:17
repent Maybe it feels
5:19
weird to be in a difficult financial situation
5:22
or have a difficult health situation or be
5:24
in a difficult marriage and say Okay, I
5:26
want to hear about all the problems that
5:28
you're experiencing in those areas of your life
5:31
But is there anything you need to repent
5:33
of? Let's start by getting
5:35
things right with God I
5:38
think that's what this passage is teaching
5:40
us now It doesn't mean
5:42
that every time we experience hardship It's
5:44
because we've disobeyed God, you know Like
5:46
our car won't start and that's because
5:48
we just sinned against God in some
5:50
way Not at all the book of
5:52
Job is proof that those who faithfully
5:54
follow God still suffer in this world
5:57
We're going to look at Job on
5:59
TMBT later this year. But
6:02
Chronicles tells us that sometimes there
6:04
is a spiritual cause behind the
6:06
events in our life. Hezekiah
6:08
sends a letter to the nation
6:10
calling them to repentance. I
6:12
could summarize his letter but it's just too
6:15
darn good. So I just want to read
6:17
it. Now while I'm reading it I just
6:19
want you to think what does God want
6:21
to say to me through this letter that
6:23
was probably written about 2,700 years
6:26
ago. We pick it up
6:28
in chapter 30 verse 6. At
6:30
the king's command, couriers went throughout Israel
6:32
and Judah with letters from the king
6:34
and from his officials which read, people
6:37
of Israel return to the Lord.
6:39
That's repentance by the way. Repentance
6:42
is turning away from sin and back
6:44
to the Lord. Okay back to the
6:46
letter. People of Israel return to the
6:48
Lord the God of Abraham, Isaac, and
6:50
Israel. That he may return to you
6:52
who are left who have escaped from
6:55
the hand of the king of Assyria.
6:57
Do not be like your parents and your
7:00
fellow Israelites who were unfaithful to the Lord,
7:02
the God of their ancestors, so that he
7:04
made them an object of horror as you
7:07
see. Do not be
7:09
stiff-necked as your ancestors were. Submit
7:12
to the Lord. Come to his sanctuary
7:14
which he has consecrated forever. Serve
7:16
the Lord your God so that his fierce
7:18
anger will turn away from you. If
7:21
you return to the Lord then your fellow
7:23
Israelites and your children will be shown compassion
7:26
by their captors and will return to this
7:28
land for the Lord your God is gracious
7:30
and compassionate. He will not turn his face
7:33
from you if you return to him. So
7:35
what's the message of this letter? Repent of
7:37
your sins. Submit to God
7:40
and you'll experience his grace. Some
7:43
of the people heed Hezekiah's call and
7:45
they come to the temple and they
7:47
participate in this repentance service and other
7:50
people who are called to repent don't.
7:52
It's not unlike Jesus's parable the wedding
7:55
feast. When some get
7:57
the invitation they mock Jesus.
8:00
They ignore the invitation, and
8:02
some humble themselves and accept it. Well,
8:05
things are going well under King Hezekiah's
8:07
leadership until they aren't. Isn't
8:09
that how your life is? Just when you
8:11
think you're making progress in your relationship with God,
8:13
you're faced with a test. Israel
8:16
and Hezekiah's test comes in
8:18
the form of King Shannacharib
8:20
of Assyria. Remember, Assyria
8:22
is the world's superpower, and King
8:24
Shannacharib leads his armies all the
8:26
way down to the walls of
8:28
Jerusalem. We read in chapter 32
8:30
that Hezekiah calls his war council
8:33
together, and they did some things to
8:35
help them in the battle. First,
8:37
they cut off the water supply so the
8:39
Assyrian army couldn't get any water. Then
8:42
they repaired breaches in the wall. But
8:44
their main military strategy against the Assyrians
8:47
was to trust God. I'm
8:49
serious. Worship and prayer
8:51
were the tactics of warfare. King
8:54
Hezekiah gathers the people together, and he says
8:56
this in chapter 32, verse 7, Be
8:59
strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or
9:02
discouraged because of the king of Assyria and
9:04
the vast army with him. For
9:06
there is a greater power with us than
9:09
with him. With him
9:11
is only the arm of flesh, but with us
9:13
is the Lord our God to help us in
9:15
the fight our battles. And
9:17
the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the
9:19
king of Judah said. See,
9:22
Hezekiah says that the Assyrians might
9:24
have a strong army, but we
9:26
have a strong God. The
9:29
Assyrian king said that God wouldn't
9:31
save them because he couldn't save
9:34
them. Here's the
9:36
message that the Assyrian king sent
9:38
to the Israelites. Do
9:40
not let Hezekiah deceive you and mislead you
9:42
like this. Do not believe him. For
9:45
no God of any nation or kingdom has
9:47
been able to deliver his people from my
9:49
hand or the hand of my predecessors. How
9:51
much less will your God deliver you
9:54
from my hand? So now
9:56
we have a battle between the Assyrian army
9:58
and all of its power and all of
10:00
its might and God,
10:03
Yahweh, the God of Israel.
10:06
King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah they
10:08
cry out to God. And here
10:10
is what happens. Chapter 32
10:12
verse 21. The Lord
10:14
sent an angel who annihilated all the
10:17
fighting men and the commanders and officers
10:19
in the camp of the Assyrian king.
10:22
So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace.
10:25
And when he went into the temple of his God,
10:27
some of his sons, his own flesh and blood cut
10:29
him down with a sword. So
10:31
the Lord saved Hezekiah and the people of
10:33
Jerusalem from the hand of Shannach, the king
10:36
of Assyria, and from the hand of all the others.
10:39
He took care of them on every side. Many
10:42
brought offerings to Jerusalem for the Lord
10:44
and valuable gifts for Hezekiah king of
10:46
Judah. From then on he was
10:48
highly regarded by all the nations. It's
10:52
clear that God has won this battle
10:54
for Israel and it's God who gets
10:57
the glory. Now King Hezekiah
10:59
goes on to have ups and downs in his
11:01
faith just like all of us do. Hezekiah
11:04
is not the hero of this story.
11:06
That role belongs to God. God
11:09
raised Hezekiah up. God brought the
11:11
people to repentance. God is the one
11:13
who defeated the Assyrians. There's so
11:15
many takeaways for our life. Maybe
11:18
there's some sin that you're convicted that
11:20
you need to repent of to turn
11:22
from your sin and turn back to
11:24
God. Or maybe
11:26
you're asking yourself, what's my real
11:28
problem? Right? Like maybe
11:30
I need to stop rearranging the circumstances of
11:33
my life and get my heart right with
11:35
God. But let's
11:37
end where we started and that's with
11:39
hope. The world is a mess. Your
11:42
life might be a mess, but God is
11:44
still at work. Do
11:46
not lose hope. Jesus
11:48
is alive. He is on the throne
11:50
of heaven. And I promise you that
11:52
in the end, He wins. Amen.
