Welcome to the Ambitions Nurse podcast

0:07

, where I provide tips , tools

0:09

and resources for the experienced nurse

0:12

to put in your career bag to

0:14

help you be a better person , a better

0:16

leader , a better professional and

0:18

, most of all , a better nurse . I'm

0:21

your host , bonnie Meadows , a career

0:23

coach and a clinical nurse specialist

0:25

with over 18 years of experience

0:28

in healthcare and nursing . It's

0:30

my passion to help experienced

0:32

nurses develop their careers to

0:35

impact healthcare and their communities

0:37

. So

0:42

my next podcast it's called

0:45

Getting Over Perfectionism and

0:47

I kept thinking , gosh , what are the bullet points

0:49

that I'm going to have for this

0:52

particular podcast ? And it came

0:54

to me that I should just get

0:56

over perfectionism and just

0:58

talk . So the first thing that comes

1:00

to my mind when it comes to careers

1:02

and getting over perfectionism

1:04

is the fact that

1:07

a lot of times we want especially

1:10

when we're leaving some type

1:12

of clinical position and

1:15

going into a five

1:17

day a week job or

1:19

four day a week job we just

1:21

want all the pieces to be lined up and we want

1:23

to know exactly what we want to do . Well

1:25

, guess what ? You're not going

1:28

to know . You're not , because even

1:30

if you already had a plan

1:32

of what you wanted to do , sometimes

1:35

God has a totally different plan

1:37

for you , but you've got to step

1:39

out there and take a chain . So

1:43

the first thing I want to tell you is you're

1:45

not going to have all the answers and

1:47

you're going to have to try something , but

1:50

in that trying something

1:52

and trying to make a decision on what that

1:54

something is , that's

1:56

where your self awareness comes

1:58

in , that's where your reflection

2:00

comes in , that's where that time

2:03

comes in . Where , in my

2:05

career builder workbook that I offer

2:07

, where I'm asking you to step

2:10

back , like these sound like simple questions

2:12

, but they are important

2:14

to know what are your

2:16

string , what are your opportunities

2:19

? What do you want to grow

2:21

and become a little bit better at ? When

2:24

I left the bedside , I was at a pivotal

2:26

point in my career where I

2:28

decided that I did not want to go to

2:30

med school but I wanted to make the most

2:32

out of my nursing career , and

2:35

that made me and helped me to

2:37

really think about well

2:39

, what else do I want to do ? What else do I

2:41

like ? What do I like in this

2:44

current space ? Like where I am

2:46

, and I knew that I wanted

2:48

to expand in hospital

2:50

business . What does that really

2:52

mean ? And , of course , that was 2011

2:55

. Those were terms that we used

2:57

back then . But I knew

2:59

I got a taste of quality improvement

3:02

. I'd liked the idea

3:04

of helping out with problem

3:06

solving and coming up with processes

3:09

to help improve things

3:11

. I was involved on different things on

3:13

the unit and that was helping

3:15

me to introduce me to different things

3:17

within the hospital . But

3:19

I knew I wanted to be

3:22

involved in hospital business and in particular

3:24

I wanted to work in quality . But

3:27

I didn't know what that was . I'd

3:29

seen one particular person who worked

3:31

specifically with cardiac surgery to

3:34

help improve their quality outcomes and I

3:36

thought it was a fascinating job . Thankfully

3:38

, I actually wasn't picked . I was like

3:40

an alternate because somebody else couldn't go

3:43

to . The Institute of

3:45

Healthcare Improvement fell in love

3:47

with quality , which that is like the

3:49

backbone of healthcare quality , so

3:52

I fell in love with it there . But

3:54

I didn't know that I was in love

3:56

with it at that time . I just knew I really

3:58

liked it and would like to do a job

4:01

of such things . I

4:04

did know that I did not want

4:06

to be a nurse manager and I

4:08

never even touched the clinical supervisor

4:10

route . I just knew that

4:12

that wasn't the path for me . That

4:14

will be the path for some of you and

4:17

you will be excellent nurse

4:19

managers because your heart

4:21

is in it and you have

4:23

a heart for the people . I have a heart

4:25

for the people , but I have a heart for the people in a different

4:27

way and I've always been this way , even

4:30

when , at some point in time

4:32

, when I was in nursing school or in

4:34

high school , I thought I wanted to

4:36

be the dean of a

4:38

nursing school or I wanted to teach

4:40

. But what I did know is

4:43

that I did not want

4:45

to teach new nurses . I

4:47

wanted to teach nurses who were

4:50

masters prepared . It

4:52

just wasn't my goal to work with people on

4:54

that level , and that's okay . There

4:57

are certain areas where you need to

4:59

kind of just slot yourself into

5:01

, and I've even gotten to a point now

5:03

to where the information

5:06

that I speak to . Yes , new

5:08

nurses can use it . Nurses

5:10

with a master's degree can use it . Nurses

5:12

with a master's degree can use it . Nurses with a doctorate

5:14

degree can use it . But

5:16

my career path coaching

5:19

goes in the direction of

5:22

degree attainment . Or

5:24

either , after you've gotten the degree

5:26

and you're in these certain

5:28

salary jobs that are not necessarily

5:31

management jobs , with their leadership

5:33

jobs , how do you operate

5:36

in those sectors ? So , leaving

5:38

the beg side . I knew that I wanted

5:40

to be in hospital business

5:43

, so I interviewed for several positions

5:45

that I knew were hospital business

5:47

like positions , but I didn't know

5:49

, I didn't fully know what those positions

5:51

entailed . I interviewed

5:53

for case management position . I

5:56

interviewed for patient safety coordinator position

5:58

. I was upset that I didn't get patient safety

6:00

coordinator position . However , I should not have been

6:02

, because I was not prepared for that interview . So

6:05

much so to where they asked me a

6:07

question about universal protocol

6:09

and I'm like what is that ? And I didn't say

6:11

it exactly like that Y'all , I am very

6:13

professional . I am like consummate

6:16

professional . So I'm more than likely

6:18

responded in I'm not sure

6:21

what you mean by that . So they had

6:23

to go into detail about it . And

6:25

then I went back to the bedside and

6:27

I was what is universal protocol ? It's

6:29

verification of procedure . Now I'm like good gosh

6:32

, that's the same thing . We never

6:34

called it that , so it's a different language

6:37

. However , I did

6:39

get the case management position , but again

6:41

, I went into

6:44

many of these interviews and read the

6:46

job description . However , first

6:48

I had a state of awareness about

6:50

me . I was okay with going five days a week

6:52

. I was okay with working salary

6:54

. I was okay with moving away from

6:56

clinical . I was ready to make that move

6:59

and I knew that I wanted to do

7:01

something in hospital business and something

7:03

pertaining to the quality improvement

7:05

of the patient or

7:08

of a hospital process . Those

7:10

are the things that I knew and so I

7:12

would say for you that

7:14

is an important piece , like I talk

7:16

about self-awareness and self-assessment

7:19

a lot , and I talk about it a lot

7:21

because it's a very foundational piece . Knowing

7:24

who you are , knowing what you want

7:26

, is very foundational

7:28

and it will take you a long way

7:31

. Instead of ooh

7:33

, maybe this , ooh , maybe that . In my mind

7:35

, I think about like , ooh , maybe this , ooh

7:38

, maybe that , but I know what I

7:40

don't want to do . I know what I don't

7:42

want to do , so why even go there

7:44

? That's how people get into

7:46

jobs , to where they end up doing

7:48

what they don't want to do , because you've not

7:51

really taken the time to sit back and really assess

7:53

and do some self-awareness . And so

7:55

I walk you through that in the career-vehicle

7:57

workbook that I offer to really

8:00

decipher , like , what are my values

8:02

? What are my beliefs ? Do I even enjoy

8:04

the company that I currently work with or is it

8:06

time for me to leave this organization altogether

8:09

. Do I need to move ? Do

8:11

I need to go back and get another degree ? I

8:13

knew that in order to make the moves that I wanted to

8:15

make , I knew

8:18

that I had to go back to school

8:20

and I was okay with that . That was always

8:22

my goal to go back and get my

8:24

master's degree . Take an initial step

8:27

and get over perfectionism

8:29

. When you're trying to do it , just

8:32

really thinking about what do

8:34

I want , making a choice

8:36

, narrow down your choices

8:38

in making your decision and

8:40

then stepping back and knowing I'm going

8:43

into this , knowing that this is

8:45

a dating situation Like

8:47

, sometimes you're going to find the right person right there

8:49

, the right job , the right whatever

8:51

, and you're going to stay in it forever . And

8:54

sometimes you are

8:56

going to have to go through a few

8:59

jobs that don't completely

9:01

feel your need but they actually meet

9:03

and meet in up , leveling

9:05

your skills as a nurse so

9:08

that you can be marketable for other

9:10

positions later

9:12

on . So that is an

9:14

important piece in getting over

9:16

perfectionism and just going

9:19

for it . Making that next move in

9:22

your career and not staying stagnant

9:24

where you are just because

9:26

you're overwhelmed by the choices

9:29

that you make . You're taking action

9:31

is what is going to get you clarity , because

9:33

you're going to start to rule out what

9:35

works , what doesn't work , what do I like

9:38

, what do I not like . You're going to

9:40

start to mold and make your professional

9:42

brand . Your self awareness

9:45

helps you to lead to what

9:47

is my true professional brand

9:50

and then you're going to be able to list

9:52

out as I said in a blog

9:54

post before , and even in

9:57

one of my previous podcasts , you're going to be able

9:59

to list out those things of these

10:01

are my non-negotiables . At some

10:03

point you're going to be able

10:05

to list out these are my negotiables

10:08

and non-negotiables when

10:11

it comes to my career . But most

10:13

of the time , it takes you moving

10:15

through the profession to really figure

10:17

out what do you want to do , or

10:19

really figure out your professional brand

10:22

. And then , once you get your professional brand

10:24

, you can say , okay , well

10:26

, the opportunities I'm looking for

10:29

need to include this , this

10:31

and this and this . And then

10:33

, once you have identified

10:35

those things and you say this is who I am as

10:37

a profession , this is what I'm looking for

10:40

, this is what I want to do , then

10:43

that helps you to narrow down , like , okay

10:45

, if this is what I'm looking for

10:47

, then these are my options . You

10:50

will no longer have to look at the field and

10:52

be like , oh , there's so much to choose what . Like

10:54

I don't even really know what I want to do . No

10:56

, you will look at the field and be able

10:58

to even go in when you're looking

11:00

for a job . You can say , huh

11:02

, well , that might be interesting because

11:05

it includes the things that I

11:07

feel like are part of our professional

11:09

brand and will allow me to succeed

11:11

in my career and help me to

11:14

grow and help me to contribute to
