The Animal Turn

 4 people rated this podcast
Animals are increasingly at the forefront of research questions – Not as shadows to human stories, or as beings we want to understand biologically, or for purely our benefit – but as beings who have histories, stories, and geographies of their own. Each season is set around themes with each episode unpacking a particular animal turn concept and its significance therein. Join PhD Candidate Claudia Hirtenfelder as she delves into some of the most important ideas emerging out of this recent turn in scholarship, thinking, and being.

Despite the podcast starting out as something for academics and researchers, this is definitely accessible for average people. I gained a new perspective on the way animals are seen and also learned some really amazing facts (mostly about bonobo orgies). The host, Claudia, is well-informed and asks engaging questions from her interviewees. I'd recommend this for anyone who is curious about animals or has any interest in animals rights.
Each episode is a discussion with a specialist on animal ethics or animal minds: Will Kymlicka, Sioban O’Sullivan, Marc Bekoff, Carl Safina and many more.
This is a fantastic podcast for anyone interested in the general field of animal studies and animal scholarship. The topics are as varied as the speakers and form a beautiful range, from very serious to an often more light hearted approach to what is undoubtedly one of the topics of our time. A definite must-listen for anyone interested in animals.
