That must-make-friends behavior may have its roots in the very same low growl, raised hackles behavior humans mislabel as "aggression". Those roots being either fear or pain or sometimes both on several levels. The adage "the best offense is a good defense" can be true energetically for both dialects, so "talk" with your Dog in their language.
