Welcome to the Approach Shot , the

0:10

golf show that's more laughs than links

0:12

, more stories than strokes , more

0:14

guffaws than golfers . Here

0:16

are the hosts of the Approach Shot John

0:18

Ashton and Neil Michaels .

0:20

Alrighty then A brand

0:22

new year , and we're still here .

0:24

Really , people would have bet against us , but here we are

0:27

and we made it .

0:28

against all odds , we

0:30

are the Approach Shot . I am John Ashton .

0:33

I am Neil Michaels . Happy New Year partner . It's

0:36

been . This is year number four for

0:39

us , really Calendar

0:41

year number four . Yeah , we started at the end of 2020

0:43

. We had the hiatus in the middle and but

0:46

yeah , year number four . So happy new

0:48

year . Oh wow , time flies . Time

0:51

flies when you're getting old . Yeah

0:53

, that's true . New Year's resolutions

0:55

.

0:57

Don't give me this new year , new you stuff

0:59

.

1:01

Wow you're vouching us has gone

1:03

from Christmas into New Year

1:05

. How do you feel about Valentine's Day

1:08

?

1:08

We should start there I

1:10

got a problem with Valentine's Day . Don't

1:13

ever marry a woman whose birthday

1:15

is three days before Valentine's Day

1:17

. Oh boy , yeah , because

1:20

combination birthday , valentine's presents

1:22

.

1:23

Oh no , no , I had that with

1:26

Christmas . We have a member of the family

1:28

that has a Christmas birthday the

1:30

20th , and for years same

1:32

thing . Open the closet and reach

1:34

in and grab one present . That's your birthday present

1:36

, it's like . But that's just an early Christmas

1:38

. So we decided that

1:40

instead we make a big deal and we do

1:43

dinner and things like that . But

1:45

New Year's , you know , with the New Year's resolution

1:47

thing , you and I talked about it before . I'm

1:50

not a New Year's resolution guy

1:52

, I am a , however , hit the reset

1:54

button guy . So , for example

1:57

, easy things like just get up off

1:59

the couch more . You know when the dogs

2:01

need to go out or we need to put our dishes

2:03

away or we want to go grab a cocktail or

2:05

something , instead of being like , oh

2:07

, I got to get off the couch . Just to go get up and

2:09

do it and I've told it that it makes

2:12

everything feel better . So I've , I've

2:14

got some some of those kind of things

2:16

. And you know , yeah , the weight , everybody

2:19

, no matter how thin you are , you want to lose some weight

2:21

or you want to tighten up or you want to get in better

2:23

shape , and stuff , and some of that , yeah

2:25

, and some of that is just crap that we

2:27

both know that at the end of January

2:30

nobody will still be doing it .

2:31

Well , it was like a 20 minute wait for every

2:33

machine at the at the gym in

2:35

January and then you can hear echoes

2:38

in February .

2:39

Yeah . If you're one of the few that's

2:41

still going , yeah , so

2:43

in in our house we have a weight bench in the garage

2:45

and right now it's

2:47

doing a great job at holding

2:50

a bunch of clothes , and

2:52

so I'm going to clear that out and I guarantee

2:54

that by first of February that that's

2:56

what it'll be again .

2:58

Oh , let's see , my wife had the we're

3:00

going to use the machinery we have downstairs

3:02

right now this year . And

3:06

I went we are , huh , let's

3:08

start that , we with you . And she came

3:10

back up about 20 minutes later looking all

3:12

dejected and I said what's wrong ? She

3:15

said the dogs ate the power

3:17

cord to the treadmill .

3:20

The question being , of course , when

3:23

they might have done it , you know , six months

3:25

ago . He just now figured that out

3:27

Exactly .

3:28

Fantastic . I'm

3:31

just going to stick with the simple stuff as , as Clint

3:33

Eastwood said , a man needs to know his limitations

3:36

. Yes , and I have

3:38

definitely learned mine . Okay

3:41

, very comfortable with them .

3:43

Okay , so what ? What pray

3:45

tell ? Are you going to do what

3:47

pray ?

3:47

tell I am going to do is I am going to

3:50

worship the ground that

3:52

Phil Mickelson and his partner

3:54

walk on , because they

3:56

have developed something healthy

3:58

that I can do making myself

4:00

feel better by drinking coffee .

4:04

I knew you were going to go there . I soon as

4:07

soon as I start talking to the four

4:09

wellness people and they said you're going to put

4:11

, you're going to add this stuff to your coffee and

4:13

it's going to help you with focus

4:16

, it's going to help you with better energy and things

4:18

like that , I was like , well , this is made

4:20

for John , because every single show he

4:22

shows up with a cup of coffee .

4:23

That's it . I had a general

4:26

manager at radio station tell me I had a coffee cup

4:28

hermetically sealed to my hand that

4:30

would not surprise me if it was true . It

4:33

is my beverage of choice . He says favorite

4:36

beverage as he raises his

4:38

cup of coffee and I usually drink it straight

4:40

. Yeah , I drink coffee

4:42

black , just like my wife , hot and

4:44

bitter .

4:46

Wow , okay , let's hope she's

4:48

not listening to this particular show . Well , that's

4:50

what makes the four wellness products

4:52

so amazing is , here you are

4:54

in the midst of all this , drinking your coffee

4:56

, and this goes in

4:59

your coffee . It's a supplement that goes into your

5:01

coffee . It's a performance coffee

5:03

supplement . It supercharges the

5:05

natural benefits of your brew with just one

5:07

scoop and allows you better focus

5:09

. It reduces the caffeine jitters , which

5:12

is crazy , because that's one of the reasons

5:14

I wouldn't drink more than two or

5:16

three cups of coffee . It increases

5:18

your collagen and supports fat burning

5:20

. So , and all you got to do is put

5:22

in your coffee yeah , that's it

5:25

.

5:25

That's it . They're five key ingredients

5:28

. Some of them I can actually pronounce Himalayan

5:31

salt , cinnamon , mct Don't

5:33

know what that is . L , the , the

5:35

theanine , it's theanine . I

5:38

knew L . She's nice , I know her

5:40

well . If you take stuff in your coffee I

5:43

do Then this replaces

5:45

the sugar and all the other bad stuff

5:47

the dairy , the artificial creamers . You

5:50

don't need any of that stuff anymore and that's

5:52

not good for you you know me better than this

5:54

.

5:54

I , unlike you put sugar free

5:56

creamer in my coffee and then I

5:58

put some artificial sweetener in and

6:01

so I like my coffee taste in a little sweet

6:03

and all this kind of stuff . So to be able to be

6:06

in a position where I can eliminate that stuff

6:08

and actually get more of the flavor because

6:10

the cinnamon is in here is just it's

6:13

a game changer .

6:14

I mentioned and alluded earlier to Phil Mickelson

6:16

and his partner . Let me tell you who his

6:19

partner is . It is the , the guy

6:21

who co-founded the titleist

6:23

performance Institute , so he knows

6:25

a little something about health . Dave Phillips

6:27

is his name . He knows something about health , he knows

6:30

something about performance , and the titleist

6:32

performance Institute is specifically

6:34

designed for golfers .

6:36

Yeah . So what we're saying is

6:38

we're going to kick off the new year by

6:41

suggesting strongly

6:43

that you go to or

6:45

wellnesscom backslash

6:48

approach and use the

6:50

code approach to get 25%

6:53

off this supplement that you put in your coffee

6:55

, that helps you focus , that gives you

6:57

more energy and all that . But wait

7:00

, there's more . They also

7:02

have things like a brownie

7:05

. There's also gummy bears

7:07

. There's other ways to be able to get

7:09

it so you can do the coffee and then supplement

7:11

your supplement . They're called recovery gummies

7:13

.

7:14

That's true , and and after 18 holes

7:16

in a June or July day , you

7:18

know what you need and those electrolytes

7:20

get replaced with the recovery gummies . So

7:23

do what Neil just suggested Go to

7:25

for wellnesscom , slash approach

7:27

and use the code approach .

7:30

And what do they get ?

7:30

25% off that whole order . How

7:32

much 25%

7:35

if you use the promo code approach

7:37

?

7:38

You know , somebody who didn't need

7:40

extra energy

7:43

is this guest

7:45

we have today who , if

7:47

you're a football fan in the 90s

7:49

, you knew him because he probably

7:51

burned your team's favorite defensive

7:54

back . His

7:56

name is Fred Barnett . He was a wide

7:58

receiver for the Eagles and for the Dolphins

8:00

and I suggest that

8:02

before we talk to him , we change his name

8:04

from Fred Barnett to Fred

8:06

Burnett , because he

8:09

burned a lot of defensive backs

8:11

.

8:12

You like that ? Okay , yeah , well , during the break you run that

8:14

by him and we'll see how he reacts .

8:16

Burnett .

8:17

He'll be right back . We are the your brochette Burn

8:22

.

9:32

Hey , thanks for hanging out , and we promised

9:34

you somebody very exciting and very interesting

9:37

, and we've got him coming up . I'm John

9:39

Ashton .

9:40

I'm not the exciting and interesting guy , though , and I'm Neil

9:42

Michaels and I'm not either we have with us a guy

9:44

who , if you have been paying

9:46

attention to football in the last 20 years or

9:48

so and especially are a fan of the NFC

9:50

East , which I am , then you

9:53

know him and we're going to get into all

9:55

of that with Arkansas Fred , otherwise

9:58

known to most of you as Fred Barnett . Fred

10:00

, welcome to the show .

10:02

Hey guys , thanks for having me . Good

10:04

to be here .

10:05

We are glad you are here . You just had some car

10:07

trouble right before this and I know that . Isn't

10:09

that the ?

10:10

worst feeling . I can't even explain

10:12

it . It's like back pain

10:14

.

10:15

It's so irritating .

10:18

Are you serious ? Now you have to figure out getting

10:20

a car towed and you got to figure

10:22

out an Uber or got an Uber , but

10:25

it's good to be here .

10:26

The cool thing about the approach shot this

10:28

is a no stress zone . Take a deep breath

10:31

, get a thing of water . Take a look at

10:33

the really funky background they put up for

10:35

me today . There , you go , have

10:37

a little of that . Whatever that is Exactly

10:39

. I just did an interview last

10:42

week with a wonderful lady named Christine

10:44

Stone from SeriousXM and right

10:46

before we get on , she pours herself a glass of wine

10:48

and goes . I hope this is okay . We

10:51

were like we hope it's your second or third .

10:54

You know what ? I got some nice bourbon

10:56

over here .

10:58

John is in Louisville , Kentucky , the home

11:00

of Bourbon . What ?

11:02

A 20 mile radius of me , I have six

11:04

or seven distilleries .

11:06

I actually import mixtures

11:09

through the island of Bermuda . I

11:12

live in Bermuda right now and

11:14

I've been collecting bourbon gosh for

11:16

about 17 years . What's

11:18

your favorite ? Probably the mixtures 20

11:20

. And I've actually had

11:22

quite a few of the Lenton's

11:24

store picks and

11:28

the EH Taylor store picks , which

11:30

have been very phenomenal

11:32

. I actually just got my

11:34

hands on the Brown Foreman

11:36

King of Kentucky last week . We'll

11:39

see .

11:40

We had a Brown Foreman employee

11:42

who calls himself America's

11:44

CEO , chief entertainment

11:47

officer . His name's Tim Laird

11:49

and his job at Brown Foreman

11:51

is coming up with cocktails . He

11:53

invented the cocktail for the

11:56

, the Oaks horse

11:58

race .

11:59

It's a tough job . Somebody's got to do it . Yeah

12:01

, somebody has to do it . It's almost

12:03

like playing football . It's almost as hard as playing football

12:05

. Maybe now probably not A buddy has to do it

12:08

and hurt doesn't hurt quite as bad . So

12:10

tell everybody why it's Arkansas Fred

12:13

, I know why ? Well , I think it's because you

12:15

went to Arkansas State .

13:16

Well , yes , but there's a

13:18

little twist to it . Interestingly

13:20

, Buddy Ryan in 1990

13:23

was interested in another trail

13:25

. He was from Louisiana , I

13:27

think I can't remember exactly what

13:30

school he was from , but he was from

13:32

Louisiana , he was a school in Louisiana

13:34

and of course I'm from a school in Arkansas

13:36

. So every time they would mention

13:38

Fred , he would . He would ask which Fred

13:41

is it ? And they talk about this Fred

13:43

. You know , keep talking about one of one of us . And

13:45

he's like well , which Fred are you talking about now ? So

13:48

he said , all right , here's what we're going to do . We're going to call

13:50

this one Arkansas Fred and

13:52

call this one Louisiana Fred . So

13:54

of course they ended up drafting Arkansas

13:57

Fred .

13:58

Since we've never heard of Louisiana Fred , obviously

14:01

the only other Fred that had a nickname

14:06

like that was bedrock Fred , but that's entirely different

14:08

.

14:10

That's how Arkansas Fred , I got the nickname

14:13

and I guess it's stuck for a while

14:15

.

14:15

Yeah , everybody still called me

14:17

up , Love it Got a quick story that relates

14:19

man . My first year in Louisville was 1980

14:22

and I went to the Kentucky Derby for the first

14:24

time in 1980 and a guy that worked at the radio

14:26

station was from Arkansas . His name was Bob

14:28

Moody . There was a horse running in

14:30

the second race named Arkansas

14:32

Flash and I said well , I

14:34

know , Bob , I'm going to have to bet on this horse

14:36

. So I bet $5 across the board on

14:39

Arkansas Flash . Even though he went off

14:41

at 26 to one won the race

14:43

. Wow , Wow , he

14:45

paid for my entire Derby day .

14:47

I bet he did . I left

14:50

after the .

14:50

Derby . I was inebriated

14:52

beyond recognition and I still

14:54

had $10 more in my pocket than I came

14:56

here .

14:59

Based on that , you could pull

15:01

off Arkansas Flash , because you know , let's

15:03

face it , you were known for your speed and

15:06

your hands . Yeah , I had a little speed

15:08

, you had a little speed .

15:10

I was well respected .

15:13

Yes , yes , yes , yes , indeed

15:15

yes , especially

15:17

by the DBs who you jumped over and ran by . So

15:19

you were drafted in the third round in 1990

15:22

, played in the NFL for eight years , six with the Eagles , two

15:24

with the Dolphins . We're going to talk about some Dolphin

15:26

things here in a minute . You made the Pro Bowl . You

15:29

were a Pro Bowler and in 1990

15:31

, a Pro Football Writers of America

15:33

NFL Rookie Team member

15:36

. So there with your

15:38

resume . But here's the thing I found

15:40

really interesting you didn't play high school

15:42

football until you were a senior .

15:44

Yes .

15:45

How did you learn all of that in such a short period

15:47

? You know ?

15:48

it wasn't much to learn . It

15:50

was more , really about the

15:52

ability that I was basically born

15:54

with . My dad had seven

15:56

brothers . Five of those brothers

15:58

probably should have played in

16:00

you know , some level

16:03

of professional sports . Two of

16:05

my uncles played college

16:07

football . One uncle played

16:09

in the USFL and

16:12

we were just very athletic family . And

16:15

my mom , she just thought football was

16:17

too rough . She thought it was too

16:19

, you know , too rough of a sport . And

16:22

I can remember my , of course , first

16:24

year in middle school . I

16:26

actually she had to pull me off the field a couple

16:28

of times because it's like , you know , all my

16:30

friends were playing and they would , you know

16:32

, stay after school and go to practice and I wouldn't

16:35

even come home and she would know exactly

16:37

where I was and she would pull me off

16:39

the field . I would be so embarrassed . I just

16:41

finally , you know , just gave up . And

16:43

my senior year in high school , you

16:46

know , everybody , of course , was talking about colleges

16:48

, where they wanted to go and this

16:50

and that , and I was , like you know , I

16:52

know I can play this game , I know I have the ability

16:55

to play this game . I've gone to , have gone to a couple

16:57

of games and , you know , watch kids at my level

16:59

play and I'm like I can see

17:01

myself out there and I can see myself being

17:03

successful if I'm able to play . And

17:06

I finally went to my , you know , the spring

17:08

, right before my senior year , I said , look

17:10

, if I'm going to be out of the house and in college

17:12

, I need to , not need to try to figure out

17:14

what is it that I need to do . I didn't

17:16

want to , you know , just stay in Mississippi by

17:19

the way , I'm from Mississippi , you know what didn't want

17:21

to stay in Mississippi and work at , you know , the factories

17:23

there . And I just , you know

17:25

, I felt like I really had the ability to play

17:27

at the high , of course , at the high

17:30

school level , and even at the college level . She

17:32

said , okay , it's , you know , it is

17:34

about time that you make a decision

17:36

for yourself , or make decisions for yourself

17:38

. And I went out and

17:41

gosh , I actually was a

17:45

all conference free safety

17:47

. I was a better free safety than I was

17:50

actually a wide

17:52

receiver , so ended up , I think , catching about

17:54

eight or nine touchdown passes in 11

17:56

games , my only hear

17:59

and I had like seven

18:01

, seven interceptions , wow , and

18:04

I really thought that I was going to get a scholarship

18:07

as a free safety . Interestingly , of course

18:09

, there wasn't a whole lot of recruiting around

18:11

1990 , 1989

18:14

. No , there wasn't gosh 85 . I'm

18:16

talking about my pro career 85

18:19

. So I , actually

18:21

a friend of mine , was being recruited

18:23

by Arkansas State , by a coach

18:25

actually that was Washington

18:28

Commanders now and

18:30

the Carolina Panthers defensive

18:32

coordinator at one point . His name was Ron

18:35

Meeks and he was the wide receiver

18:37

coach in Recruiter for Arkansas State in 1985

18:40

. And a friend of mine who signed

18:42

with Arkansas State told him you

18:45

need to look at Fred Barnett On your

18:47

way back to Arkansas . Why don't you stop by

18:49

? You know Roseville High School , which is where I went

18:51

and look at his film . So

18:54

of course he looked at my film and he sees

18:56

me catching eight touchdown passes and

18:58

just literally running by kids and

19:00

you know seven interceptions . And my

19:03

high school coach called me that night

19:05

before he went back to Arkansas

19:07

State . My high school coach said a coach from

19:09

Arkansas State came by and

19:11

I'm like really , and I was great , I'm like , cause

19:14

at that point Ole Miss had offered

19:16

me a half scholarship and Mississippi State

19:18

had offered me a partial scholarship

19:20

as well . But you know we didn't have any money

19:22

. I didn't want to put the stress on my mom to

19:24

try to come up when he went into money for college

19:27

and I felt like you know , at some point I'm

19:29

going to get a look whether it's a junior

19:31

college or something . And my coach called

19:33

me and said look , arkansas State just stopped

19:35

by and he said I think they

19:38

really , you know , probably

19:40

want to sign you and I'm like you know , maybe a half scholarship

19:43

. He said no , he said the coach told

19:45

me not to show anyone else

19:47

your film and I said oh , and

19:51

I said , oh . So about two

19:53

hours later I get a call from coach

19:55

Ron Meeks and he's like I'm just three hours

19:58

away from you , I'll be there , I'll be at

20:00

your house tomorrow . So he drove back

20:02

to Arkansas State three hours and the next day

20:04

he drove back to Gunnison

20:06

, mississippi , where I was , and my mom was

20:08

so uncomfortable because sometimes

20:10

recruiters when they're kind of , you

20:13

know , looking at you and talking to you , they're just kind of

20:15

checking you out , looking at your body and just , you know

20:17

, just hitting your shoulders , and my mom was like why is he

20:19

touching you like that ? Why

20:24

is he looking at your legs and everything ? I

20:26

met with him and he went

20:28

back and then a couple of days later he came

20:30

back and got me and we went to

20:32

Arkansas State and ran

20:34

a 4-4-40 . Wow

20:37

and got signed

20:39

after that 40 yard dash .

20:42

That's amazing .

20:43

And the rest is I actually tell

20:46

the stories to a lot of kids . You know , sometimes

20:48

it's meant to be at

21:49

the same time too , there's a lot

21:51

of vision that I had for myself and a lot

21:53

of hard work that I put

21:55

in to make sure what I visualized

21:58

come true . It's not quite like

22:00

that in golf , but I played

22:02

five years of organized

22:05

football before I became a professional

22:07

, which is , like you know , crazy . I

22:09

mean , you don't hear somebody play for five years

22:11

.

22:12

I bet you , randall Cunningham , was pretty happy

22:14

that Coach Meeks called you , because

22:16

you ended up being Randall

22:19

Cunningham's favorite receiver

22:21

. I know this because it says it on the internet

22:23

, and so it must be true , must

22:25

be true .

22:27

Because every corner of the internet is

22:29

true , exactly .

22:32

How did you , how did the two of you vibe

22:35

the way you did ? Because , I mean , everybody knows

22:37

about the 95 yard touchdown

22:39

pass and we want I do want to talk to you about

22:41

that specific play , but you guys

22:43

vibed almost immediately

22:46

. It was your rookie season . You've bribed with

22:48

him .

22:49

Yes , yes , it's hard to say . I mean

22:51

, I mean , he also had a vibe with Calvin Williams

22:53

, who was a rookie as well , but

22:55

it just seemed that . Well , first of all , randall

22:58

loved throwing the deep ball . Yeah , he did . Of

23:00

course , my specialty was was getting

23:02

down the field . I had this way

23:04

of running that guys

23:06

really didn't . It didn't realize

23:08

how fast I was running until I got right on

23:10

him , and actually I've heard that from defensive

23:13

backs that I played , and that's even Dion Sanchez is like

23:15

look , it just looked like you just not running that fast

23:17

. All of a sudden you're right on us and you

23:19

know , by the time we turn you're gone . So

23:21

I just have this kind of weird style of running

23:23

. I had a kind of weird gate

23:25

when I ran , but but you

23:28

know , ended up , of course , you know being

23:30

one of the fastest wide receivers in

23:32

the league while I was playing . But I but

23:34

I think you know the fact that that that

23:37

Randall loved throwing the deep ball

23:39

. You know he had a very , very strong arm and

23:41

you know we have a number of highlights of where

23:43

he's , you know , putting the balls . You know 60 , 50

23:46

, 75 yards down the field and you

23:48

know I'm running right under it . But I think that

23:50

that was a great vibe and when

23:52

you're a threat with the deep ball

23:54

it kind of leaves you , you know

23:56

, enough room to work underneath . I mean , there's , you

23:58

know , dig routes , deep in routes

24:00

, a comeback routes that you know once I get 20

24:03

yards down the field you think I'm , you know , going

24:05

past you and you turn and run and you know when I'm

24:07

stopping and running an inrouter or running a

24:09

comeback route . So it just just kind of made

24:11

you know the route treat easier for me having

24:13

to speed or just kind of kind of being you

24:15

know a guy who was notable for going

24:18

past you with his speed . So I

24:20

think we've revived in that sense . You know , you

24:22

know the deep route .

24:24

And again , let's talk about the 95

24:26

yard miracle touchdown pass

24:29

against Buffalo . For people who may

24:31

not remember this , it was a game against Buffalo . It

24:33

was third and 14 and you guys were at the five

24:35

yard line and Bruce Smith was

24:37

the guy who was the

24:40

defensive tackle that every

24:42

quarterback feared because he would just

24:44

come out . He would just eat offensive linemen

24:47

for lunch . If he wasn't unstoppable

24:49

, it was very difficult to stop him . So it's

24:51

third and 14 at the five and I just

24:53

watched this the other day . Here comes Smith

24:55

and everybody Randall ducks under one

24:57

guy , runs out to another guy , then rolls

24:59

to his left and , rolling

25:01

against his body , stops and

25:03

throws the ball from five yards

25:06

deep in the end zone to the 50

25:08

yard line . You

25:10

have beaten no one . The

25:12

DBs are right on top

25:15

of you , right there , yeah , and you jumped

25:17

I don't know if you had springs in your

25:19

feet or what . You jumped above . All

25:21

of them caught the ball and somehow

25:23

the two of them , like bowling pins , fall

25:26

down and you run the rest of

25:28

the way for a 95 yard touchdown . And

25:30

I had to watch that thing like five times

25:33

to believe what I saw . And

25:35

the announcers who were doing it even said

25:37

I can't believe what I just saw . Yes

25:40

, do you remember that as clearly

25:42

as I just described it ?

25:44

Yes , actually I do it's . You know

25:47

, it was an incredible play . A lot of people

25:49

don't realize that we lost that game , but

25:57

I was like it's like the loss doesn't even matter

25:59

, it's like , yeah , but the play . But I think

26:02

I had a post route on

26:04

that play and I can remember looking

26:06

over I was on the right side and

26:08

just kind of running my post and

26:10

just looking over my left shoulder and

26:13

it got to a point where I just kind of started jogging

26:15

and like what the heck is going on and

26:18

I see bodies just flying everywhere

26:20

. And so I'm looking around , looking

26:22

at the refs and I'm like no

26:24

whistle and everybody's still playing . And

26:26

all of a sudden , to my right , randall

26:29

just comes out and when he does it I'm like , oh my goodness

26:32

, he's not gonna . And here in ball comes

26:34

the ball . So I'm like I'm like , just

26:36

catch the ball , just catch the ball , okay . So

26:38

I go up . Of course , as soon

26:40

as I go up it just kind of hits , hits me , you know , right

26:43

on my right shoulder pad , and I'm like , oh my

26:45

goodness , I'm gone and I'm like

26:47

there's no way these guys are catching me and I just I just

26:49

took off and

26:52

if you watch the whole play , you can see . I'm

26:54

just exhausted . I tried to spike

26:56

the ball . I ended up falling .

26:59

I was going to say you

27:01

had the worst touchdown

27:04

dance in the history of the NFL

27:06

on that play . You went to spike

27:09

the ball . Your feet came out from under

27:11

you , you fell on your butt and the ball goes down and

27:14

I'm thinking was that intentional ? Because

27:17

nowadays they do kind of all kind of

27:19

weird touchdown dances , You're just up and crazy . Nope

27:21

, you just fell on your butt . It was not intentional .

27:24

Yeah , yeah , I went

27:26

to . You know I started the backwards

27:28

spike . I don't want to

27:31

say I started , but people

27:33

say I started the back of sight .

27:35

I might not say that .

27:37

And I was going to spike it backwards and

27:39

my left foot just kind of

27:41

slipped and I still

27:43

spiked it .

27:44

I was just , it was on my way down

27:46

, I was falling on my foot If you

27:48

want to go back on YouTube and watch the play

27:50

. The play is incredible , but please do

27:52

watch the worst touchdown dance in the history

27:54

of mankind , because that was it .

27:58

That was it for sure .

27:59

Maybe he's got a much better approach to the to

28:01

the pin when he sinks along . But for Birdie

28:04

or something we'll probably go

28:06

when we come right back with Fred Barnett

28:08

here on the approach .

28:13

Have you ever tried to buy gold and silver and felt

28:15

like you were talking to a used car salesman

28:17

? That's because the precious metals industry

28:20

is like the Wild West Salesmen can

28:22

say pretty much anything or make any promise

28:24

they want without repercussion . But

28:26

Genesis Gold Group is different . They're

28:29

a faith driven Christian precious metals

28:31

company and believe in educating their customers

28:33

, not pressuring them for a quick

28:35

sale . Genesis Gold Group

28:37

focuses on customer service , not

28:39

sleazy marketing . Genesis

28:41

Gold Group is named after the first book of the

28:44

Bible for a reason Proper stewardship

28:46

of wealth is their specialty . Find

And thanks for hanging in coming back . We are the Approach Shot Arkansas

29:24

. Fred Barnett is our guest . I'm John Ashton

29:27

.

29:27

I'm Neil Michaels and before we jump into golf

29:29

here , I want to get a little serious

29:31

for a minute . You did an interview about 10

29:33

years ago with CBS Radio in Philly

29:36

talking about headaches and how

29:38

you were living with headaches back then , and

29:40

you were talking about Junior Sayow

29:42

and some of that . How are you feeling these

29:44

days and are you still involved

29:46

with that ?

29:48

Yes , I am still involved with it and

29:50

I get an annual checkup

29:53

every year because every year is an annual . That's

29:55

why they call it that . You

29:58

know , it's something that I think all players have

30:00

to stay on top of . It's been hard

30:02

over the past , I guess . I guess

30:05

I can say , you know , since I've been retired

30:07

, I've seen so many players and

30:09

heard of so many players just doing things

30:11

uncharacteristic of who they are , and

30:14

even some players that are having ailments

30:16

you know , beyond , you know , just

30:18

a head , that are , you know , not

30:20

with us anymore . It's a scary thing

30:22

because it's like , of course , the older you get

30:24

, the more your body , you know , starts to

30:27

, you know deteriorate and you feel aches

30:29

and pains here . And I mean , even just

30:31

last week I had a buddy

30:33

that actually went to Arkansas State , michael

30:35

Adams . He got drafted by the Saints

30:37

. He just passed away at

30:40

60 , I think 61 years old , played

30:42

three years , I think , with the Saints and I

30:44

think he played a year or two with

30:46

Arizona . I did

30:48

summer camps with Kwame Lassiter

30:51

, you know , passed away on the treadmill

30:53

, kwame was like late 40s

30:55

. I think it's essential that you

30:57

know every year that we get , you know

30:59

, not only our head check , but our heart , you

31:01

know , everything that you know . That kind

31:03

of keeps us ticking , you know . But I'm

31:06

definitely involved in it and

31:09

there's a major assessment that we do

31:11

every five years and then there's an assessment

31:13

that we do every year as well . So , you

31:16

know , you just have to stay on top of it . I

31:18

have been in touch with guys who

31:20

are struggling a lot worse than I am

31:23

and you know , guys are forgetting little things

31:25

and sometimes it's interesting because

31:27

as a player you're so used to being in

31:29

control of things and you know you

31:31

got your playbook and your own time

31:33

and everything's just kind of always kind of running the

31:35

right way and you know your plays

31:38

and you know exactly what to do . And

31:40

then sometimes when you just , you know

31:42

, forget certain things , it

31:44

just kind of bothers you , it kind of irritates you , you

31:46

know , when you come out and realize

31:48

, okay , I thought I parked my car here

31:50

for the cars , you know , on the other side of the

31:53

street , you know . So that you know

31:55

, I mean there are a couple of times I had a couple of

31:57

episodes of the dizzy spells

31:59

, being conscious of it , staying

32:01

on top of it , and you

32:03

know , unfortunately there are a lot of guys who

32:05

, just , you know , don't take advantage

32:07

of what the NFL is offering us

32:09

, because you know , I feel that they've

32:12

acknowledged , now that you know the game

32:14

is a serious physical game and there

32:16

, you know , there could be some issues with players

32:19

, especially back when you

32:21

know the rules weren't as what they

32:23

are now and you know

32:25

, now guys are a little more protected .

32:27

Your generation of players 70s

32:29

, 80s and 90s . You guys hit harder

32:31

because you were allowed to . Yeah

32:33

, got hit harder and it is

32:35

better now , for sure . But the

32:37

fact that the NFL recognizes

32:40

that what you guys

32:42

went through taught them that they need to

32:44

be more aware of this and provide

32:46

more services is great

32:48

. Now what we need to do is get

32:50

players of your generation and before

32:53

to recognize that it's there and

32:55

do something about it and stop trying to be so

32:57

powerful about it and say , hey , I

32:59

might have an issue here . I should go get

33:01

it checked out .

33:03

Yeah , a lot of times too . It's just , you know , guys

33:05

just don't want to acknowledge and

33:07

accept that you know they could have an

33:09

issue and that's a lot . That's kind

33:11

of crossed the board with some people . It's like I don't want to go

33:13

to the doctor , I could find out something wrong .

33:15

Well , that's why you did that , that's why

33:17

you go , that's

33:20

why John tells me I need to go to

33:22

his buddy to get take some golf lessons

33:24

, because we know there's a problem .

33:26

We know there's a problem .

33:28

I don't think that's exclusive to NFL players , though

33:30

that's men in general . I'm

33:33

not going to go to the doctor because there may be something

33:35

wrong with me .

33:36

Yeah . So John's friend

33:39

tells me there's something wrong with my swing . He's

33:42

helped me with a couple of things , and

33:44

some I've talked to him about and some I've got

33:46

on video . How was your game these

33:48

days ?

33:49

You know , interestingly , this interview

33:51

or podcast is very timely

33:53

because I can remember my first

33:55

year when I retired . I got this

33:58

weird set of golf clubs and

34:00

I didn't want to pay anything for my golf club because I was

34:02

like whatever , and I ended up just kind

34:04

of collecting these different clubs

34:06

that I just got rid of last

34:09

year . So I found

34:11

myself when I first started

34:13

just kind of not caring and even

34:15

when I wanted to hit the ball right

34:18

and I did , and I was like , oh , what the hell . And

34:20

since I've been retired I play in , you

34:22

know , celebrity tournaments . You

34:24

know as long as , like the , you know I'm not doing anything

34:27

until you need to get it . You

34:30

know the celebrity tournaments when you know we play

34:32

captain's choice and in the course I can

34:34

get you know two or three shots where

34:36

you know , oh , we're going to play France ball , and I'm like , yes

34:38

, that's all I want . And

34:41

I've been playing you know a lot of charity

34:43

tournaments . We moved to Bermuda about four

34:45

years ago my wife does work with Bacardi

34:48

and I found myself playing a little more Just

34:51

a year ago . I decided

34:53

here's what I'm going to do . So

34:55

I ended up getting a set of pins

34:58

this year , like I think it's February and I

35:00

have played more this year

35:02

than I played in my entire

35:04

retirement . So I played

35:07

at least 30 , 40 times this

35:09

year .

35:10

Holy crap .

35:12

And I'm at a point now

35:15

to where I'm understanding I haven't had lessons yet . As

35:18

a matter of fact , I'm having lessons once

35:20

we get back get back next year . We're

35:22

going on a trip for a new year . I

35:25

live in a part in an area in the

35:27

middle called Pembroke and one of my neighbors

35:29

has been trying to get me to come out and play

35:32

. So now we play every Saturday

35:34

when the course is not raining or

35:36

when we're in town . We play at this part three

35:38

course every Saturday , so it's a kind of easy

35:41

course to just kind of work on your short game and we played

35:43

there probably 20 times . The

35:45

first time we went out he beat me by

35:47

12 strokes . Second time

35:49

we went out and all the rest

35:51

of the time I beat him every time

35:53

Really and he's . It's frustrating

35:55

to heck out of him because he's like what

35:57

are you doing ? And the one thing that I noticed

35:59

about myself . But once I find out

36:02

that I'm what I'm doing wrong

36:04

, I fix it right away . But

36:06

the problem is , and you

36:08

know and I'm totally transparent with

36:11

this because I it's getting to a point where I'm really enjoying it and

36:13

I love it because it's so challenging and

36:17

a buddy of mine asked me you know what's the most frustrating thing about it

36:19

? And I said you know what's interesting

36:21

? I said , let me be honest . And

36:23

I said it's , it's , it's not that

36:25

this is my , this is the characteristic that I have . I said , but

36:27

I'm so damn arrogant , I think

36:30

that I'm just not going to do what I supposed to do and

36:32

the ball is going to go where I want it to go . You

36:36

know , and I'm like you know , and I'm like it didn't

36:38

, and

36:41

the ball didn't decide not to go . It's

36:44

just that . You know , my swing is off . It's

36:46

actually one of the hardest

36:49

things I've ever done . Just

36:51

when you think you feel , feel it , you

36:54

don't . And just when

36:56

you think you , you just I don't feel like it today

36:58

, and all of a sudden you're like , oh my God

37:00

, just just , just , just just going exactly where

37:02

I want to go yeah . And

37:04

such a great feeling . I mean , of course , we

37:06

play . I play a lot on this part three , I

37:08

think . The two or three times , the

37:10

last two or three times , I maybe

37:12

hit the green like five

37:14

times , which is like amazing for me , just

37:17

to just , you know , take a nice smooth

37:19

swing and and it just falls right on the green

37:21

. It's amazing and it's getting to a

37:23

point of where I'll be . Why

37:25

I put it this way this year , for

37:27

the first time ever

37:29

, I've gone out by myself . You know , it's

37:32

a great game and it's something

37:34

that you know . I look forward to continuing

37:37

. You know , for the rest of my life , as long as

37:39

I'm here and once I get

37:41

those lessons , I really feel that , you know , going

37:44

to get a lot better at it . I'm not going to be

37:46

a scratch golfer but at the same time too , I

37:48

, you know I'm going to make shots that are

37:50

pleasing to me and go out and enjoy , you

37:52

know , some of the nice forces .

37:54

Well , like you say , fred , when you find out what you're

37:56

doing wrong and when you take lessons I

37:58

mean just swinging a club in front of a PGA

38:01

Pro they're going to know what you're doing wrong . You

38:03

know you will become even more addicted

38:05

than you already are . And

38:07

but let me tell you that the major frustration no

38:10

matter how good you get the major frustration

38:12

with this game is you can go out and shoot

38:14

six under par on Tuesday

38:16

and then go back on . Wednesday and be 20

38:18

over on the same course .

38:20

It was so interesting because I watched

38:23

the Bermuda , the Butterfield PGA

38:26

open and actually I was

38:28

here and I actually belonged

38:31

to Port Royal Golf Club

38:33

where they played a PGA and it

38:36

was just , it was just great , just kind of watching

38:38

, you know , the pros play the

38:40

holes that I , that I play , yeah , and

38:43

it was even more fun to see them

38:45

screw up a hole that I just totally , you know

38:47

, like hey , you could have done that . You

38:50

could have used my shadow .

38:52

Let me show you how to do that , oh yeah

38:54

, but you know , as a competitive guy , as somebody

38:56

who grew up at playing competitive sports

38:58

, the thing that John said that's so frustrating

39:01

is you're always going to compete against yourself

39:03

. There's no perfect . You're not going to go out there

39:05

and get a hole in one on 18 . You're

39:07

not going to go out there and hit every shot

39:09

right . Not every putt's going to drop , not every

39:11

drive is going to go where you want it to . And

39:14

so , even when you get better , you

39:16

will always compete with yourself . And

39:18

that makes it the reason

39:20

we all go back , because we want to go . Oh

39:23

, I could correct that shot . I could correct that

39:25

shot . Last time I played , I hit

39:27

that drive over here , and next time I know to

39:29

hit it over here , or next time I know this green

39:31

is going to break a certain way and maybe you

39:33

fix that , but something else goes wrong . So it's that's

39:36

what keeps us coming back . Speaking of coming

39:38

back , we're going to come back here in a little bit and

39:41

I've got a six pack of questions

39:43

for you , fred Barnett . We're

39:45

going to fire them off at you and

39:47

we're going to want to give you you give us the very first

39:50

thought that comes to mind . So we're going to do that

39:53

and just be ready , because it's going to come from all

39:55

over the place .

39:56

Let me get my birthday .

39:59

You may . You may need it . He's Fred

40:01

Barnett ready to approach that . We'll be right back .

41:18

I'm Neil Michaels and I have my water . We

41:21

have our guest Michael . With us is Fred .

41:22

Barnett , who looks like he's throwing around

41:25

some bourbon . Yes , Not quite like my golf swing . A

41:28

lot better than my golf swing .

41:29

Smooth already now , huh .

41:31

Oh yeah , the last one , for sure I don't give

41:33

it to you .

41:34

All right , go ahead and take a sip , because you're going to need it . Six packs

41:36

coming up . You ready ? We're going to hit six questions

41:38

. Give us the first answer that comes to mind . You

41:41

ready , I'm ready , all right . Question

41:44

one your 95-yard touchdown pass from Randall

41:46

Cunningham was one considered one of the greatest

41:48

catches in NFL history . So

41:50

what catch other than one that you

41:52

made do you consider one

41:54

of the best of all time ?

41:58

I would say the catch

42:00

Odeo Beckham Jr

42:02

made the one they had caught

42:04

in the end zone . That was unbelievable

42:07

.

42:08

You're stabbing a cowboy fan in the heart

42:10

right now .

42:10

I know that was unbelievable .

42:14

That was you're right to suffer . Baby serve you

42:16

right .

42:17

He played for the Eagles . He went right for a catcher

42:19

that stab a cowboy fan in the heart

42:22

. That was amazing . I'm surprised

42:24

you didn't say Dwight Clark . I'm just

42:26

saying I don't know . I'm going to

42:30

say it . Another one Step why

42:33

is all the great catches are against the Cowboys ? All

42:35

right . Question two who is your favorite

42:38

person to play golf with and

42:40

who do you play with ? That makes

42:42

your game better .

42:44

My favorite person to play golf with

42:46

is a guy by the name

42:48

of Ian Frith . He's

42:51

my neighbor . He's the guy who beat me the first

42:53

time I went out . I've

42:55

had his number ever since . He's

42:58

my favorite to play with because he

43:00

always fights

43:02

back when I'm up . When I'm up two or three

43:05

strokes he seems

43:07

to tie it up and he just

43:09

pushes me and

43:11

makes me concentrate a lot more . And

43:14

plus , we're neighbors . We

43:17

kind of go at each other and see

43:19

who's going to come out on top . Lately

43:21

it's been me .

43:23

The question . I think the question underneath

43:25

the question there is . Would this

43:27

be the same answer if he was still beating

43:29

you ?

43:31

Probably would . Yes , we're

43:34

good sports . We're definitely good sports

43:36

.

43:37

I've been dying , since I knew you were going to be

43:39

on this show , to ask you this ? Question . Question

43:42

three your 1992

43:45

Pro Line football card pictures

43:48

you , shirtless , with gloves

43:50

on , leaning against a chalkboard

43:52

looking like a male model . The

43:56

question is , who gives you the most

43:58

about being Arkansas , fred

44:00

the ?

44:00

model my

44:03

daughters . I can remember when they

44:05

first saw that card they were like what

44:07

are you doing ? They

44:10

were like is that your

44:12

mustache ? I had this really

44:14

thick mustache . This was years

44:16

before they were even here . One

44:19

thing about my kids although

44:21

of course I did what I did , I never

44:23

pulled out my film and

44:26

told my kids look at me , look at me . Never

44:28

did it . I can remember taking

44:30

even my boys to

44:32

the football game a couple

44:34

of weeks ago . They were like this is what you did . A

44:38

lot of their friends , even my daughters

44:40

, where my daughters are out of college now

44:42

. But I can remember first taking my daughters

44:44

to an autograph signing

44:46

and they were just like all

44:48

these people are here for you . I'm

44:51

like yes , I started

44:53

showing them some of my training

44:56

cards and they're like this is you . I just

44:58

never did . I never told them exactly . They

45:01

knew that I played football but they didn't know how

45:03

good I was . I can remember

45:05

them seeing that card . It was like cracking

45:08

up because they were

45:11

trying to look like a model and I

45:13

looked older than I look now . I

45:15

had this really thick mustache . I looked

45:17

like somebody's grandpa leaning against them . Boys

45:19

.

45:21

I think the funny thing is looking at it . It's like

45:23

okay , you first look at the

45:25

body because it's pretty rock

45:27

hard back then and you make your way

45:30

up and it's like why is he wearing a porn stash

45:32

?

45:36

You always kind of critique yourself and I

45:39

look at the card and I look , I literally look

45:41

disgusting . I look like

45:43

I just like smelled like some

45:45

poop or something .

45:49

Couldn't have gone the entire discussion with

45:51

you without bringing that one up . All

45:54

right , question four less

45:56

embarrassing what is your best golf

45:58

shot ever ?

46:00

My best golf shot that I guess

46:02

I've made , or

46:04

that I made

46:06

it had to have been . Actually

46:09

, of course

46:11

, it was on the part three course I hit the

46:13

green and I think I was . Of course I

46:15

got a birdie on that one and I think I was about

46:17

150 , 160

46:20

out and I used a seven

46:22

iron and it was the smoothest

46:24

, slowest swing . It looked like

46:26

a slow motion swing and as soon as I

46:29

hit the ball everybody was like that's

46:31

a golf shot and it felt so

46:33

good . It was like I feel like a robot

46:35

. It was like and it just you

46:37

know about three feet from the cup and

46:40

I was like , wow , it's

46:42

. And of course , the next shot , I probably hit the bunkers . Not

46:47

the next shot , but the next hole , I probably hit the bunkers

46:49

. Did you sink ?

46:49

the putt .

46:50

I did .

46:51

I did , I did .

46:53

You know , hole after hole , it's you know , within each

46:56

hole I'm making like the

46:58

perfect shot , and then I somehow

47:00

, you know , figure out how to screw it up . But

47:03

that , but that particular hole was was I

47:05

think it was actually hole number four

47:08

at a turtle hill in Southampton

47:10

, and I don't think I , I don't think

47:12

I birded a hole since , though , In

47:14

five .

47:15

You are good friends with NFL legend

47:17

Eric Dickerson . Tell us a Dickerson

47:19

story that was never supposed to leave the friend

47:22

vault .

47:22

I can't do that , god

47:27

. We've hung out a lot in Vegas and

47:29

you know what goes on in Vegas stays in

47:31

Vegas . So not too

47:33

much I can tell you about Vegas . You

47:35

know I've never actually played golf with air . We've

47:38

actually tried to do a couple of tournaments

47:40

that didn't come

47:42

through and hopefully we'll get

47:44

one this year in Bermuda

47:46

, but I would say that there's

47:49

not much . You know that

47:52

could possibly be entertaining Eric

47:54

Dickerson story . He's just a genuine

47:56

nice guy , very mature guy

47:58

, like you know . I like hanging around , hanging

48:01

around guys who matured , stay out of trouble and

48:03

you know keep your nose clean and you know

48:05

talk about positive things . To

48:07

tell you the truth , nothing really comes to mind besides

48:10

you know us just kind of hanging out and

48:12

, you know , having a sip of whiskey

48:14

and a cigar and

48:17

never actually never had a chance to play golf

48:19

with it , and I guess because I really

48:21

wasn't playing golf at that time .

48:22

There you go , All right . Question six Since

48:24

we are in the throat shot , we

48:27

ask this of everybody who comes on the show

48:29

. Mr Barnett , in your approach

48:31

to life , what one rule do you live

48:33

by ?

48:34

The rule that I live by

48:36

is honesty . Honesty has always

48:38

helped me , whether that's people being

48:41

honest with me and , more importantly , me

48:43

being honest with myself . Honesty

48:45

has kept me intact . There

48:47

are times that when I wanted to do things

48:49

and I was honest about myself honest

48:52

actually to myself about why

48:54

I wanted to do it . But being honest , in my

48:56

opinion , just kind of keeps it all , keeps

48:58

everything in perspective . There were things

49:01

that I didn't want to do . The honesty

49:03

made me do them . As I mentioned

49:05

, the most important thing about honesty

49:07

is being honest with yourself , that you're

49:09

not overlooking anything

49:11

that you need to change about

49:13

yourself . I'm 57

49:16

years old and I'm looking

49:18

for things to change . What

49:21

can I do to make myself better ? A better father

49:23

, a better husband , a better friend , a better golf player

49:25

? Even

49:27

the fact that I call myself arrogant

49:29

on my shot , on my bad shots , I'm being honest

49:31

and saying I got myself think

49:33

that the ball's just gonna go . Even

49:37

if I raise my head up , it's just gonna go where it's gonna go

49:39

, because I'm a fast

49:41

friend . It's gonna do what I want .

49:44

Honesty works here because , honestly , that was the best

49:46

answer we've ever had on that

49:48

question .

49:49

So , fred Barnett , you are on

49:51

the seed .

49:52

I am being honest because , honestly , a

49:56

lot of people will say and they're

49:58

being honest at the time treat

50:00

others as you would want to be treated

50:02

or do good , leave things

50:05

better than you found it , and

50:07

all of those answers are great . But you

50:09

said something that was introspective , you

50:11

said something where you were vulnerable

50:13

about yourself and to me

50:15

, that makes it a more honest

50:17

answer and a more well thought

50:20

out answer . So , bravo

50:22

, well done . I have one thing before we go . I

50:24

read something that I thought was one

50:27

of the most aware

50:29

moments that an athlete has ever

50:31

shared . In your fourth game

50:33

ever , the Eagles are playing the Colts and during

50:35

a TV timeout , you said that

50:38

you just sort of looked around during this TV

50:40

timeout and you said this is the fourth game of your entire

50:42

career . You looked around and you were like holy

50:46

crap , I made it , this is it . How

50:48

do you have a moment like that during the 30

50:50

second TV timeout , man , I mean .

50:52

One thing that's important and for me

50:54

to be successful was

50:57

to visualize what you want to do

50:59

. I see it as like a jigsaw puzzle

51:02

, right ? It's like when you have this

51:04

picture of what you want to do , all

51:06

these pieces that create that

51:08

picture are opportunities . So

51:11

it was the opportunity to get that one

51:13

scholarship . It was the opportunity

51:15

to just have enough passes

51:17

thrown to me or catch enough passes to

51:19

be on the radar of an NFL team

51:21

. It was the opportunity to be

51:23

ranked high enough to go to the combine

51:25

. So all those pieces just start to put

51:28

together . I put together to create

51:30

this picture that I saw in

51:32

that fourth game . I think because I

51:34

was so focused on putting

51:36

that puzzle together , even through training

51:39

camp , even through the first game , just

51:41

getting over the nerves in the first game

51:43

. And you know , I think about

51:45

my fifth game . I was starting what was the fifth

51:47

game ? I was starting , I think at that point

51:50

I just felt relaxed and confident

51:52

that

51:55

I was where I belong and

51:57

I think it was the Internapples game and I think

51:59

that's my first touchdown and they went to

52:01

a TV timeout and I just kind of relaxed

52:03

and I just kind of looked up in the crowd and it

52:05

just hit me like a ton of bricks and I just literally started

52:08

bawling on the field and I'm like I'm here

52:10

and I'm just like wiping

52:12

my tears through my head and I'm like I'm God

52:14

, I hope everybody's gonna see me cry and

52:16

I'm like I'm gonna feel . But you know you're

52:19

talking about a small town boy from Gunnison

52:21

, mississippi . You know the biggest thing that

52:23

was near me was a nail factory and

52:26

you know , a division two school

52:28

, delta State , just a desire

52:30

to play football and then , just that

52:32

one piece of the puzzle , when my

52:34

mom said , okay , go ahead . And I'm like

52:36

I have to do this . And

52:38

here I am talking about my

52:41

years in the NFL .

52:42

And he's kicking off 2024 on the

52:44

approach shot , which has got to be the epitome

52:46

of his career .

52:47

Boom , boom . There's

52:50

two regrets to successful . You know

52:52

it's the regret of not trying , you know

52:54

, and one one , of course , is regret

52:56

of not trying because you just you want you won't

52:59

succeed if you don't try . And

53:01

of course , you know you can't give up . The

53:03

kids that I grew up with . They literally laughed

53:05

at because in the 10th grade I wasn't even

53:07

playing football . I'm like I'm gonna play pro football

53:09

and they're like you don't even play football . Now , what

53:12

are you talking about ? And

53:14

you know , had no idea that you know my

53:17

last year would be , you know , the year that

53:19

that I started playing . I just had

53:21

it in my mind that it was gonna happen and as

53:23

soon as I got the opportunity to make

53:25

it happen , I had to take advantage

53:27

of every opportunity

53:30

to make sure that what

53:32

I saw would be a reality

53:34

. And now it's history

53:36

.

53:36

Well , our only regret is that we got out

53:38

of time . We love talking to you , fred , it was . I

53:40

mean , that was felt like sitting

53:43

at a bar , just having a conversation

53:45

with an old friend .

53:45

My pleasure , my pleasure . Thank you so much Thank

53:48

you so ? Appreciate it . Thanks for having me , guys .
