On September 29th, 1952 John Rhodes Cobb, a three-time World Land Speed Record Holder, who’d previously driven at speeds of up to 403 miles per hour and earned the press moniker “The Fastest Man Alive,” was attempting to break the Water Speed Record at Loch Ness. While piloting his speedboat, John Cobb attained over 240 miles per hour when his boat struck a mysterious ripple. The vessel immediately took a nose dive and disintegrated, throwing Cobb 50 feet.
