All right, welcome back to the audible. One

0:02

day ahead of the draft, it was up honest,

0:04

Kim Boat, Camper, John CoA, Jenny, what's your John

0:07

might tell you. We've been talking about it, we've been looking

0:09

forward to it, and finally here

0:11

it is almost upon us. And

0:14

there's no more clarity than there was six

0:17

months ago on what was

0:19

going to happen in the draft of the viam

0:21

Dolphins, or for that case, any other

0:23

football team right now. Yeah, the

0:25

only one that might know is is maybe Jacksonville

0:28

and the and the Jets. I guess, well for

0:30

the first time out, at least for the first first

0:32

pop out right exactly because

0:35

San Francisco seems to be in a quandary

0:37

about one quarterback they actually want at number

0:39

three. So you know, the Dolphins

0:41

had moved up and down this draft board. They

0:43

started at three, uh, they moved

0:45

to twelve. There there now at six

0:48

uh and eighteen in the first

0:50

round. And I think, you know,

0:53

Bo, as you look at this, they're kind of at the

0:55

mercy right now of the Atlanta

0:57

Falcons in terms of if they're looking

0:59

at Old Pits or Jamar Chase.

1:02

You know, Atlanta and Cincinnati could play spoilers

1:05

or if San Francisco picks

1:07

the quarterback in Atlanta, feels

1:10

like they have the guy that they want

1:12

out of the two that weren't picked. I

1:14

think that bodes well for the Miami Dolphins. So

1:16

there's a lot of certainty maybe

1:18

at the first two picks, but a lot of uncertainty

1:20

after that. Yeah, they have no doubt about

1:22

They remind you. The Audible is presented by Auto

1:34

them out at one of their dealerships

1:36

somewhere around the country. Hey, John,

1:38

getting back to that, you know, you look at the draft

1:40

and I mean, I'm like you. I mean,

1:42

I've been looking at all this stuff, reading everything,

1:45

trying to get to know everybody, and

1:47

and and read numerous numerous

1:50

mock drafts, and one

1:52

thing you get when you look at it that

1:55

it looks at things all fall into place, but

1:57

there there's always you know, there's always

1:59

something in middle there. And you talked about

2:01

earlier Atlanta maybe maybe a

2:04

draft changer. They may make a pick there

2:06

that kind of changes the rest of the doubt

2:08

draft below it stay with San Francisco.

2:10

To me, those are the teams John early

2:13

on that could really disrupt the

2:16

draft this year. Yeah, and definitely

2:18

you started number three with San

2:20

Francisco. You know, do they like Mac

2:23

Jones? Do they like Justin Fields?

2:25

Is it Trey Lance? Is? Is that the guy

2:27

that they covered? And

2:30

when they do make that selection, is

2:32

Atlanta have their pomp pombs out and say,

2:34

hey, we get our guy now to be

2:36

the heir apparent, you know in Atlanta,

2:39

so to Matt Ryan and then

2:41

Bo you have Cincinnati who desperately

2:44

needs, you know, an offensive lineman, and

2:46

Seul from Oregon might be the guy.

2:49

But you may have Joe Burrow, their quarterback,

2:51

whispering in uh, somebody's

2:53

here that he used to throw. This guy from LSU,

2:55

Jamar Chase is pretty good even

2:57

though he opted out last year. This guy

3:00

has got all the tools we need

3:02

to add to our wide receiver base. So

3:04

now you know, the Dolphins are kind of in a in

3:06

a quandary if that scenario kind

3:08

of plays out, that Atlanta would

3:11

take Fits and then Cincinnati might take

3:13

Chase, or does Miami say okay,

3:16

we'll stick with the University of Alabama. Whether

3:18

we go with Davante Smith or Jalen Waddle, we're

3:20

gonna get a starter. We're gonna get a guy that's

3:22

as good, arguably than anybody

3:25

we have on our roster Day one, and

3:27

we'll roll that way. So there's a lot

3:29

of uncertainty for the Dolphins

3:31

at six, and you know, there's

3:34

a lot of players, there's three teams

3:36

ahead of them that could play a significant

3:38

role on who Miami chooses

3:41

at six. Yeah, there there's some interesting situations

3:44

at the top that could really impact

3:46

the first round. And let's not let

3:48

let's not overlook the Dolphins and making

3:51

a move with Trady Eric Flowers moving

3:53

him out and saying they were gonna get

3:55

Robert Hunt down, let him play guard, And all

3:57

of a sudden, you start looking at that tackle position

4:00

and you look at Penny Sewell out there, Who's

4:02

Who's or the kid Slater from

4:04

Rashaan Slater from Northwestern to

4:06

two top guys, and certainly Penny

4:09

Sewell is a guy that's really, uh, you

4:11

know, really really at the top of the list of

4:13

non quarterbacks, at least in my mind,

4:16

on this football team. This guy is a Maller. Uh,

4:18

he can move people. He's

4:20

a great task protectors. He sat

4:22

out last year so he didn't get get

4:24

his body worn out for another year and

4:27

he just he moves. Well, the question

4:30

is, you know, with with guys

4:32

like me and you and a lot of fans

4:35

out there are saying, hey, look, you know you got

4:37

you could you could come away with two wide

4:39

receivers and a and a running back,

4:41

or you could get the tight end pits if you

4:43

get lucky and another wide receiver and

4:45

one of those top two running backs in the first two

4:48

rounds, you know,

4:50

and and saying we're in pretty good shape

4:52

there, and then all of a sudden, you know, if

4:54

Chris Greer sends a note in that says hey,

4:56

Penny Sewell for more

4:59

you're gonna have, You're gonna have a lot

5:01

of disenchanted Dolphins

5:03

fans at that moment. But

5:05

looking forward, John Well, I

5:07

tell you this is this sets your offensive line

5:10

up to be a powerhouse

5:13

for for a decade if you make that

5:15

move. Well, both the guys you mentioned

5:18

I think are terrific players. But

5:20

if that scenario played out, I hope they have knitting

5:22

on the stage at the draft par for

5:25

for you and I, because, um,

5:27

you know it might not be a popular pick

5:29

right away. It's a solid pick, it's

5:32

a it's a it's a good pick for the football

5:34

team, and it makes you

5:36

better on paper for sure. But

5:39

it's interesting that the Dolphins would

5:41

move Eric Flowers so that

5:43

Solomon Kinley will move from probably

5:45

right guard to left guard. He played it in college.

5:48

You move Robert Hunt inside, you

5:50

have Austin Jackson, who you picked in the first

5:53

round last year at left tackle. You go out

5:55

and get Max stura Uh in free

5:57

agency from Baltimore, and now you still

5:59

have jes See Davis and d J. Fluker

6:01

that can play right tackle, and

6:04

you still have a big vacancy

6:06

out there at wide receiver and

6:08

and potentially at running back and

6:11

or tight end slash wide receiver with

6:13

Pitts. So, um,

6:16

I think you have to put a percentage

6:18

on it that the Dolphins potentially

6:20

could select an offensive lineman. But I

6:23

think it's I would think the percentage

6:25

is low only because you

6:28

have to score in the National Football League. Now.

6:30

You have to have guys that can run and catch, and

6:33

you have to have guys that can be really

6:35

effective in space and and bouncing

6:37

off a would be tackler and getting first

6:39

downs. There's those guys in the first

6:41

round. You can get him at six, you can get it at

6:43

eighteen, and you can get it at thirty six

6:46

if the Dolphins decide to hold off until

6:49

then to potentially select a running back.

6:51

So I just think there's more

6:54

explosiveness in this draft

6:56

in the skill positions. Uh

6:59

not. This coount what happens at the offensive

7:01

line and defensive line, and that's where

7:04

you know, that's where the bread is buttered. But

7:06

you have to be able to come away after

7:08

the first round knowing you've neither affected

7:11

your wide receiver spot and you're

7:13

running back spot or your edge rushing

7:15

potential. Uh if if if

7:17

I'm wearing the GM hat, well well

7:19

let me ask, let me, let me, let me have you put another

7:21

hat on, John and put a hat on is the

7:23

quarterback of this football team

7:26

And you're looking at You're saying, Jeeves, you know I can get

7:28

man, I can get those receivers. I can get pretty

7:31

much any other I can may have my pick of the receivers

7:33

at that point. You know, maybe Pitts has gone

7:36

or maybe not, but you may have the pick of whether

7:39

it's Pitts and and and Chase

7:41

and Waddle and Smith and all

7:43

those guys that are out there, or you're

7:45

Penna Sewell sitting there and you're

7:47

the quarterback. You're saying, would I rather have someone

7:50

that can test the ball or someone that keeps

7:52

me standing on my two feet? Well,

7:54

I think you know, if

7:56

you can be uh

7:58

greedy, you want both. But you

8:01

have both, and I would I would

8:03

pick the receiver only because I think this offensive

8:06

line. The Miami Dolphins

8:08

invested heavily in this offensive line,

8:11

uh, sometimes with success, sometimes

8:14

maybe not so much success. Last

8:16

year, I thought that between Jackson,

8:19

Kinley and Hunt, those rookies

8:21

played significantly well

8:23

and and played a significant amount

8:25

of snaps to get experience,

8:28

to be able to go through a season, be

8:30

able to switch positions and play multiple

8:32

positions up front. And

8:35

I think with the addition of Fluker, you

8:37

have another Alabama grad that has experienced

8:39

in the National Football League playing both

8:41

inside and outside. I think that's

8:43

your kind of security blanket over Jesse

8:46

Davis who can play multiple positions.

8:48

So if it's for me and I'm the quarterback of the Miami

8:51

Dolphins, I'd rather have Kyle Fitzer,

8:53

Davante Smith or or Jamaar Chase

8:56

or Jalen Waddle in the first

8:58

round because the

9:00

the time you signed Pits or Chase,

9:03

there's an argument that he's the best player at that

9:05

position. And

9:08

and you can only add to what Mike

9:10

Kasiki does or DeVante Parker, Preston

9:13

Williams or William Fuller. Um.

9:15

It just adds to your explosiveness

9:18

as an offense and it gets your quarterback excited

9:21

that he has another option.

9:23

The score points in the movie Teames. Okay,

9:25

I look around to John. I mean when you

9:28

look at the at this draft, in

9:30

particular offensive tackle,

9:32

it's depth. There's depth at offensive tackle.

9:35

You you may get one a little later if if

9:37

you're looking for one, there's a centers are out there.

9:39

If you're looking for that young center, that could be your

9:41

guys. So I'm with you on that. I thought, you

9:44

know, I thought with what they did last year in the offensive

9:46

line really solidified him. And

9:49

and look, you know, we know that there's you know, they've

9:51

got their center if they can you know, and if

9:53

if there's a question about offensive tackle on the right

9:55

side, they can, they can fix that. And

9:57

you they've got multiple people to do it. I

10:00

tend to leave more in your direction where let's let's

10:02

go out and and and and because

10:04

you know I'm gonna say this, John, and it may

10:07

it may sound um

10:10

stupid, but you

10:12

know, the most important pick in

10:15

this year's draft. And you look at what they have. They have

10:17

number six and eighteen in the first round as

10:19

they sit right now, They've

10:22

got thirty six and fifty in the

10:24

second round. Four picks in the top

10:26

two rounds. Then they've got eighty

10:28

one eighty one pick in the third round,

10:31

no pick in the fourth, they've got the fifth round,

10:33

they've got a number hundred, one hundred fifty six,

10:36

no pick in the six and then two picks

10:38

in the seventh round. A lot of picks

10:40

there, John, But you know what, in my

10:42

mind, the most important pick is to

10:45

a to a Tonga viola. Yeah,

10:49

to to it. Maybe the guy that makes or

10:51

breaks this draft, no matter

10:53

what the Dolphins do, because you've

10:56

got to come back, and he's got to come back and

10:58

be the two. Uh. But the Dolphins

11:01

expected when they picked him at number

11:03

five, and

11:05

and and if that doesn't happen,

11:09

everything that we're talking about, Oh, it's easy. You can

11:11

get these receivers. You could get picks. You're gonna

11:13

get Chase, you can get this guy you got you know all

11:15

that may not make a difference if

11:17

our guy that we picked in the first round with the first pick

11:20

last year doesn't play to the

11:22

expectations that the Dolphins

11:24

had when they made him their first pick last

11:26

year. I totally agree

11:29

with you Bo and the tough The

11:31

tough part about the Dolphins where they're

11:33

at right now as an organization and

11:35

as a football team is that they

11:38

went two years ago and win five games

11:40

with a with not a really good roster. Okay,

11:43

they improved that roster be

11:45

a free agency in the draft. Then they jump all

11:47

the way to ten wins there one game

11:49

out of making the playoffs. You

11:52

know better than I do, or as well

11:54

as I do, that going from

11:56

ten to twelve or ten to eleven or

11:58

tend to thirteen, that is much harder

12:00

than going from five to ten. If

12:02

you don't have excellent play

12:04

at quarterback, that's not going to happen.

12:07

I don't care who surrounds the quarterback.

12:09

If you don't have that catalyst distributing in

12:11

football and being your leader and being

12:14

one of the best players on the field each in every

12:16

Sunday, that you don't get

12:18

the double digit wins, you don't you don't exceed

12:20

what you did last year. And that's going to be

12:22

the challenge for this football team. And that's

12:25

why it's so significant that they

12:27

make the correct picks at six and eighteen, thirty,

12:30

six and fifty because those four picks

12:32

will impact the team next year. Yeah,

12:35

no, no doubt about it, John, And you

12:37

look at that and and everything,

12:40

everything that they've done, um,

12:43

go last year to get where they're at right now.

12:45

And as you said, you know, going from

12:47

five to ten, you know, I

12:50

think I think I would say this,

12:52

the Dolphins went from five to ten, not based

12:54

on talent, based on core

12:57

values of their head coach. This uh

13:00

discipline, discipline, um

13:04

you know, you know, limiting penalties,

13:07

don't hurt yourself, forced

13:09

turnovers, do all those things that

13:12

you know, you know, the turnovers and creep

13:14

into town, all that other stuff goes back to the

13:17

what was there? What was there saying? Uh uh,

13:20

he takes no talent. So he

13:22

was able to get from five wins to ten wins

13:25

with with to take no talent attitude

13:28

to get from ten wins to twelve wins, ten

13:31

wins to fourteen wins. Anybody asks

13:33

me, damn talent in your football team. You

13:35

know you have someone that could go out and

13:38

make plays and beat beat

13:40

Look at look at all those players teams you watched in the

13:42

playoffs last year. You gotta beat those teams. Others

13:45

the teams you gotta beat, and they've all got talent.

13:47

And you know, just because you're gonna you know, just because you're disciplined,

13:50

because you you don't you you you're

13:52

cut down on your penalties, and and your

13:54

team is is is solid, doesn't

13:57

mean you'ven win with that talent. So so I'm with you, John,

14:00

getting more talent, especially on the offensive

14:02

side. Um, the more

14:04

the better this year for me. Yeah,

14:06

I'm right there. Bo. I just think that

14:09

you have a chance to significantly bolster

14:13

your offense at six and

14:15

at eighteen if you choose. Now, depending

14:17

on who the Dolphins pick at six, whether

14:20

it's it's Pits or Chase, if

14:22

they're available, or if

14:24

both are gone and they decided

14:27

to try to back find a partner and go

14:29

back a couple of spots and still

14:32

have two wide receivers from Alabama

14:34

and Smith and waddle. Eighteen

14:36

might change a little bit depending on what's

14:38

there too, because you still have you

14:41

know, you have the manual, but you have Andrew Van

14:43

Ginkle Vince Beagle's coming back.

14:45

But outside of that, I

14:47

don't know if you know. You may have a linebacker

14:50

that we signed him free agency that can

14:52

roast the pastor, but you need another

14:54

guy outside. You need to have

14:56

that rotation coming in and out. And

14:59

you may be looking at an edge pass

15:01

rusher at eight team, which then

15:04

bot kicks you to the second round

15:06

in their first selection there, which is at thirty

15:08

six. I would think that Nigi

15:11

Harris is well gone. And if

15:13

you don't take him an eighteen, I

15:15

logan marked this because I hope it doesn't come

15:18

true. But if he's wearing Buffalo blue

15:20

and red, I will be sick to

15:22

my stomach at the end of

15:24

the first round because I have a pretty good indication

15:26

that that's where they may be going. But

15:29

then you have Travis at Tanna and

15:31

Javonte Williams, both talented

15:33

backs. But but the best guy

15:36

in my opinion, is Harris, and immediately

15:38

at eighteen, if you would get him

15:41

and not go pass rusher, maybe push pass

15:43

edge Rusher to thirty six, he becomes

15:45

the best player on the roster at

15:48

running back immediately.

15:50

Number one and Gasket and ocmed

15:52

are great assets to him.

15:54

They're they're great change up backs. But he

15:56

becomes the best one on the team. So for

15:58

me, I want to pick guys

16:00

that when I picked him at six and at eighteen,

16:02

they're the best players at their position, hands

16:05

down, on on on the

16:07

Miami Dolphins roster. And you would have that

16:09

if you got Pits and you got Harris.

16:12

Yeah, and then you look at you look at eighteen and

16:14

there's gonna be a lot of people there. You could you

16:16

pay Michael Parsons, a kid from Penn

16:18

State. You talked about Nachi, Harris,

16:21

Greg Russo you know, I'm a

16:23

little on Greg only

16:25

because he's lack of playing time. And from

16:28

George is there too. Yeah. So so

16:30

you've got a bunch of guys. Are I like the linebacker from Notre

16:32

Dame? Yeah, the kid that I had Candid

16:35

if you can say his name, but well,

16:37

you know, if he shows up, it's gonna be like when they picked the

16:40

last year. We're gonna be scrambled around.

16:43

Hey, where's it? Where's the pronunciation? Guy

16:45

to this guy. You know, all I know, Oh

16:48

we got the linebacker from Notre Dame. What do you think? Guys,

16:51

all I know is that guy gets like a ton of bricks.

16:53

So he's about he's about two d and twenty

16:55

pounds. So but anyway, so there, yeah,

16:57

there's a lot of a lot of different opportunities

16:59

out there. You But but I'm with you, John, I

17:01

I'm you know, I'm of the yolk that and

17:04

I understand the thing with running backs. You know,

17:06

look, they're you know, they're they're not valued in the first

17:08

round anymore because because they've

17:10

got limited playing time, and you kind of figure

17:12

the window for a running back is four to

17:14

five years of quality production if

17:17

you get that out of him. But I

17:19

could all say, but on the flip side, John, I could

17:21

also say this, where the Dolphins

17:23

are now heading into the

17:26

next season coming forward, they

17:29

got about a five year window to

17:31

try to make a Super Bowl, right and

17:34

and so okay, look, I don't care, you know, well,

17:36

I'm gonna pick a running back then because I don't care if

17:38

you play, if you only play five years,

17:41

because our window is gonna shut sometime around

17:43

then. And I'm gonna hand him the football

17:46

as many times as I can and

17:48

take the opportunity of having a

17:50

bona fide legit studs

17:53

standing in the backfield. I I

17:56

would, Man, I'm gonna be That's

17:58

probably the one thing I'll be most disapp pointed

18:00

about if at

18:02

the end of the first two

18:05

rounds the Dolphins don't come away with

18:07

one of those two running backs, whether it's Nagi, Harris

18:09

or Travis, etc. N. I.

18:12

I just think they would make such a difference for

18:15

two up for the offense and

18:17

for this football team in general, in

18:20

what you can do and who you can be, much

18:23

like Derrick Henry with with Tennessee look

18:25

at what he's done for that football team, and

18:28

and Ryan Tannehill along

18:30

the way. Yeah, and I would throw Javonte

18:32

Williams in there in the second round to any

18:34

one of those three in combination.

18:36

But I still would rank Harris one

18:40

and probably a tie for second depending

18:42

on your flavor of the month between E. T N and Williams.

18:44

But you're right. You go back to two thousand and sixteen

18:47

and Derrick Henry doesn't get picked to like forty

18:49

four or something like that. The Dolphins

18:51

pick Xavian Howard, who turned out to

18:53

be a terrific pick. But if the Dolphins

18:56

were to pick Henry instead of Howard,

18:58

I would have been a static because

19:01

around later they get Henry's backup.

19:03

Uh, you know, and and it's

19:05

just you don't know how

19:07

it's gonna shake out, But look what it's

19:10

done for the Like you said the career

19:12

Ryan Tannehill, Well look what it's done for that franchise

19:15

when you have a back that is a complete

19:17

difference maker. And in my humble

19:19

opinion, that's what Nige Harris

19:21

is. He's a difference maker. If

19:24

if you select him at eight team and he's the

19:26

best player on your roster immediately as

19:28

soon as you say his name, I'm good

19:30

with that. I can live with that no

19:32

matter where you pick him in the first round. Well,

19:35

good thing, John, is that that my

19:37

career and your career doesn't depend on who

19:40

they picked. So

19:42

so we can sit here and we can sit here

19:44

in the chief seats and poke around all we want,

19:46

but uh, it's gonna be a

19:49

that's gonna be a monumental draft for

19:51

uh, for Chris Greer, Brian Flores,

19:55

the entire Dolphin staff, and in the in the franchise

19:57

because it really is a draft that

20:00

uh it is part of a of a

20:02

three prong deal where the Dolphins started

20:05

getting rid of talent, accumulating draft

20:07

capital, free agent capital, and

20:09

then taking uh two to three

20:11

to the last three years to get

20:13

to where they are right now. This is a monumental

20:16

draft for the Miami Dolphins, and they've got

20:18

to get it right. Well, you've got to get it right

20:21

because, like we talked about earlier,

20:24

the leap from ten wins going

20:26

north of ten gets much tougher

20:28

with each one. And you just don't automatically

20:30

go five to ten and then ten to fourteen

20:33

unless you've got talent and

20:35

and things follow your way and you

20:37

win a couple of games that maybe you shouldn't

20:39

have won, But you have to have talent

20:41

to do that. You have to have talent to get to eleven, twelve,

20:44

thirteen wins in the National Football League.

20:46

And I think the Dolphins, over

20:49

the tenure of Brian Flores from

20:51

his initial roster to where they

20:53

are now have come leaps

20:55

and bounds in this draft.

20:58

The first four or five picks can only bolster

21:02

what they can do in two thousand and

21:04

twenty one. If they get efficient

21:06

quarterback play if they get they don't have

21:08

to have elite quarterback play, but it has to be

21:11

trending towards that, because that's what

21:13

it's gonna take. That's what it takes for all these playoff

21:15

teams. They have elite quarterback talent

21:18

that might not be the same level week in and

21:20

week out, but it sure is never poor.

21:22

It sure isn't a losing

21:25

effort. And I don't think to has that DNA

21:27

in his body. I think he's a winner. I think he's

21:29

a guy that is going to have a full off

21:31

season behind him to get as healthy

21:34

as he can be, as strong and as fit as

21:36

he can be. And I think he's excited for

21:38

the opportunity to prove everyone,

21:41

all the naysayers out there, that he deserved

21:43

to be drafted where he was drafted, He deserves

21:46

to be handed the reins of this franchise

21:48

and and hopefully he'll be able to lead

21:50

them to the playoffs this year. Well,

21:53

if if you've seen the videos

21:55

and the and the photos of him working out doesn't

21:58

doesn't tell you what kind of peron he

22:00

is and what kind of football player he is, then

22:02

then I think you're missing the boat out him. Too. I

22:04

agree, And I mean that guy's coming back. I

22:07

think he's coming back with a vengeance. I mean, this is

22:09

probably the first time in his life that he's heard

22:12

negative stuff about his game, his

22:15

play, and uh and and

22:17

he just just just knowing what type

22:19

of person he is. Um, he's not gonna

22:21

sit still for that. No, And

22:23

I think that started last year

22:26

when he got a chance to play, but it really

22:28

was kicked into high gear

22:31

in this offseason. He's able to get his receivers

22:33

around him, he was able to get healthy, he

22:36

was able to have time to work on his strength, and

22:38

it's it's not all physical to boat,

22:41

probably more mental than anything.

22:44

To get over the hump of not having

22:46

the complete success that you imagined,

22:49

uh, you know as a kid growing up or at

22:51

Alabama getting drafted fifth overall,

22:54

you know, not having that uh immediate

22:56

success. Maybe you know, he

22:59

he flirted with in in a lot of games.

23:01

He had a lot of quality games, but he

23:03

just wasn't up to the standard of

23:05

of the public or the public's view

23:07

or the skeptics out there or the

23:09

writers out there. And that's okay

23:11

because now he has a starting point and

23:13

he can only go north from there, and if

23:15

you surround him with the right type of players,

23:18

I think he's gonna have success, no

23:20

doubt about it. All right, So kindly, John

23:22

was kind of laid out a little our blueprints

23:24

or at least what we'd like to see early in the draft.

23:27

And as we know this, this is

23:29

not a one round or two round deal. It's

23:31

a weekend deal. And and by the time

23:33

that's Sundays over, when all the picts are

23:35

made and free agent, college

23:37

free agents, undrafted free agents are all signed

23:40

and ready to go, we'll have a pretty good snapshot

23:42

in this football team. But John, for the guys that are

23:44

making that move, whether you're getting

23:46

drafted or not, um,

23:49

you know this this and John, I think we

23:51

could both speak on this. You know, this is

23:53

a this is a life

23:55

changing event for everybody

23:58

that's in the in the raft and and

24:00

and and I say that not only because you

24:03

know you're you're waiting to find out as

24:05

I remember, I remember waiting for the draft and you

24:07

didn't know where you're going, and you're going to East you

24:10

know. And I remember getting a call the night

24:12

before the draft from someone from the Green Day

24:14

Packers and they said,

24:16

hey, you know, if you're there with our pick, our first

24:18

pick. We're gonna take you and I

24:20

and I and I remember I said to him, said, geez, that's great.

24:22

And as soon as I though, I go, oh my god. Green

24:25

Bay in California, California,

24:27

kid, you know. And

24:30

they were a bad football team at the time. I

24:32

think I think that was before Don mccowski.

24:34

I forget who the quarterback was there at the time. I

24:36

think it was I think it was Lynn Dickey was a quarterbackers

24:39

might have been. And they weren't very good.

24:41

And I'm going, oh my god, not only are I going to

24:43

a bad football team, but I'm going

24:45

to one where it's freezing

24:47

cold most of the year. And

24:50

unfortunately when I get the call he was Don Shula

24:52

that didn't and then so um

24:55

I was able to come here. And John, I know you went to

24:57

play up in Canada and

25:00

and you know, there's a lot of times sometimes i'm driving

25:02

around, I look back at where

25:04

I'm at, what I'm doing, my

25:07

family, you know, my dos and

25:11

all those things. Because being

25:13

drafted and coming to a city for me, John,

25:16

it's when I look back now I'm

25:18

sixty six years old, and I look back at what I've

25:20

been able to do what what

25:22

what? What what? Being a member of the Miami Dolphins.

25:25

What being drafted by the Miami Dolphins, The

25:27

opportunities that have presented from me

25:30

over the years to meet

25:33

my wife, have kids, raise

25:35

a family, get into business,

25:38

beat, become part of what

25:40

I would consider the fiber of South Florida,

25:43

and and and be able to have

25:45

a platform to talk about things I love to

25:47

talk about, and meet people

25:49

like like you, and and and Danny,

25:52

and and and A J and Bob and all the guys

25:54

I've been with them saying with you, it's it's

25:56

really I know you think about everyone

25:58

thinks about that night, but for

26:01

the lasting effect of what that

26:03

night means to your life,

26:05

I don't know that people can really wrap

26:08

their arms around it. I think it

26:10

takes you going through it and then looking

26:13

back after a while. Look, some guys look back

26:15

and it wasn't so good for him, right right?

26:18

Yeah, you know, so what's gonna happen.

26:20

What's gonna happen after this

26:23

weekend? For these guys, you know, it's

26:25

just it's it really is a start

26:28

to the professional career, but really

26:30

a jump start to their life. It

26:32

changes your dynamics of of

26:34

where you are in your life in

26:36

terms of uh geography,

26:39

because you know, in college, it does it to

26:41

a small extent because you know you're there for

26:43

now three years or potentially four or

26:46

five and you probably are gonna go home

26:48

or or maybe stay in that community. Uh

26:51

if you you know, if you find a job

26:53

there. But when you go to play professional

26:55

football, it really does change your life

26:57

because now you're an adult, now your

27:00

your can buy a place of your own. Uh.

27:03

You want to become a fixture in

27:05

that community. And for me it being

27:07

in Toronto. Never thought I would meet my

27:09

wife there. My daughter was born in

27:12

Canada. Um, it

27:14

does change your life quite a bit. And

27:16

these guys, you know, Uh Davonte

27:19

Smith grew up in Louisiana, goes to Alabama.

27:22

Who knows where he's gonna end up? Mand up in

27:24

Miami? Man end up a member

27:26

of the Giants may end up in Detroit. Who knows

27:28

where he's gonna go? And uh, and guys

27:31

don't really, I don't think it hits

27:33

them until their feet

27:35

get off the plane and they're really there for real,

27:38

and you know, you've got a four or five year

27:40

deal, and what do I do now, you

27:43

know, how how do I become uh

27:46

assimilated with my new surroundings?

27:48

You know, how do I become a part

27:50

of this community? And all those things kind

27:53

of hits you at once and you figure it out,

27:55

but it sure is daunting in the beginning

27:57

because that's kind of on the on the

27:59

back burner because all you're

28:01

thinking about is how you can become a better football

28:03

player and how you can make the team, how

28:05

you can start, how you can win games. But

28:08

then you go home at night and you go up, maybe I should

28:10

buy a house, maybe I should rent. You

28:12

know me, I gotta get a car. You know, do I

28:14

get a car? Deal? What do I have to do?

28:17

Well? You know what it's to come rushing to you. Yeah,

28:19

it's always funny that first I

28:21

remember my first, you know, first training camp

28:24

and then I actually I blew my knee out and was in your

28:26

reserve. But but you know, you you the

28:28

first that you know, you break training camp? Where

28:34

do I go? Yeah? Okay,

28:36

camp so over? You can go home? Where else where's

28:38

home? I think

28:41

I think thank God from that more, I think Matt had

28:43

a buddy that don't had something to do with an

28:45

apartment complex because he used to send every rookie

28:48

over there, and I think every rookie for about

28:50

five years ended up there again begin

28:52

their NFL life at the UH

28:54

at these apartments in North Miami Beach

28:56

next to that. But but eventually, you know,

28:59

then you gotta go out. Okay, now I got an apartment, where

29:01

the hell do I go buy groceries at? You know what I'm saying.

29:04

You know, for a guy that's been in college and

29:06

and you know, eating and even in

29:08

college, you know, cafeterias or whatever.

29:11

And now all of a sudden, you will you wake up and you go, what, I

29:13

gotta go shop for groceries? What's that? So

29:16

it's all, you know, it's all in the little it's even all

29:18

the little stuff that really really really

29:22

changes with it. But it's an exciting time. There's

29:24

always exciting time for me. I know, it's exciting

29:26

time for you John going to the CFL and

29:29

it just to experience all of it. And uh,

29:32

I just said, you know it kind of the nostals

29:34

you kind of keeps coming back to me every year on

29:36

drafted, just just knowing how important it is for

29:38

all these guys. You know, it's crazy but I

29:41

can still remember breaking camp and

29:43

not knowing where the hell is gonna go, trying

29:46

to figure out if I should run a hotel room.

29:48

And one of one of the veteran wide receivers

29:50

on our team, his name was Paul Pierson.

29:53

He says, John, why don't you just come live with

29:55

me for like a week and a half or two weeks. You can stay

29:57

in the basement. Um, my wife

29:59

already said it was okay, and we we can

30:01

figure out, you know, finding a running a house

30:03

or running an apartment or doing whatever, and

30:05

I'll help you out. So I, you know, hop in the

30:07

car with Paul. We go to the city. I've never been

30:10

to go to a town. I've never been

30:12

too into a house. I've never been at meet

30:14

his wife, let alone. Didn't even know Paul had

30:16

two kids. Okay, so

30:18

the kids are running around. I'm playing with him there.

30:20

I was like, Paul brought me home to entertain

30:22

the kids. You

30:24

know. So hey, John, my wife

30:26

and I are going out for dinner, why don't you take care of the kids.

30:29

Yeah, you bade me sit tonight. So it

30:33

was it's strange, but it was a lot of

30:35

fun. Yeah, it is. It.

30:37

It's a special deal, and it's

30:39

gonna be special for all those guys, and it's gonna be nice

30:41

to see the draft back Roger

30:43

Goodell greeting the guys that get picked in everything

30:46

and get a little more normalcy back to our

30:48

life and back to the NFL Draft, and that, Uh,

30:50

I'm looking forward to and looking forward to it for a lot of

30:52

reasons for that, looking forward to it to see

30:55

how our team shapes up as we go into

30:57

next year. And uh uh and

30:59

a lot high expectations. And John I I

31:01

going into this draft. I think you know, I've

31:04

full faith and confidence in Chris Flores

31:07

and our Chris Greer and Brian Flora's and I

31:09

think they're gonna make the right picks. And I think we're

31:11

all gonna be happy. Uh. Come come

31:14

Sunday, Sunday morning or late Saturday

31:16

night, whenever you want to call it. Nim Well,

31:18

we we get around and we say

31:20

we want this and that. But it's a very

31:22

difficult job because you're you're thinking

31:25

on how you're going to improve your team,

31:27

and sometimes it's not

31:29

the obvious choice. It's someone else

31:31

that you feel like it fits this team

31:34

and is gonna make more

31:36

people on the team better than than the

31:38

other player. So, um, it's

31:40

a tough job. And and Chris Greer

31:42

and Brian Floores and that whole staff

31:45

in the organization that's involved

31:47

in the in the draft room and and

31:49

trying to come up with guys that are gonna bolster

31:52

this roster and be impactful

31:54

not only for the season coming up, for

31:57

the next four or five or six years and hopefully even

31:59

longer. Some of are are

32:01

that talented to have that long of a career.

32:03

So hopefully, uh, the guys have

32:05

a great night. They picked the guys. They're gonna

32:07

make us better and and we're gonna

32:09

move forward to be a better organization for it. Hopefully

32:12

get to go. Hopefully you get a gold jacket out of the

32:15

this that would be terrific. How about that? All

32:17

right, that's gonna do it, Johnny, what's gonna let's gonna

32:19

wrap it up, and we'll all sit back and watch

32:22

this draft and and we'll be back next

32:25

week to look back to see where

32:27

we are and evaluate just

32:30

what the organization has done over this weekend

32:32

to put this team in the position to find

32:34

themselves in the playoffs and uh and

32:37

chasing the Super Bowl. How about that. That

32:39

sounds great though. You have a great weekend and
